00:26 Mediterranean Sea.
00:31 And at least 20 people have died and hundreds have been injured after an escalation of hostilities
00:36 between Sudan's army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces near to the capital.
00:50 Hello from the headquarters of Telesfor English in Havana, Cuba.
00:54 This is From the South.
00:55 I'm Joren Corrêa Gladys Quesada and this is Ardenews.
00:58 On Wednesday in Brazil, delegations participated in the fourth Amazon Summit arrived to take
01:03 part in the second and final day of the event being held in Belém.
01:08 According to the schedule of the environmental summit, leaders of the eight countries that
01:12 make up the Amazonian Cooperation Treaty, with the leaders of nations that have rainforest
01:18 in other regions to begin a process of building coordinated positions that will be taken to
01:23 multilateral negotiations on environmental issues.
01:27 On Tuesday, the Amazonian countries agreed in the so-called Belém Declaration to establish
01:32 an alliance to combat deforestation among states and strengthen cooperation.
01:37 Such a coalition seeks to promote regional cooperation in combating deforestation and
01:42 prevent the Amazon from reaching the point of no return, recognizing and promoting the
01:47 fulfillment of national goals, including zero deforestation.
01:56 Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira highlighted in his speech during the second day of the
02:01 summit the importance of the participation of indigenous communities in the country's
02:05 efforts to protect the Amazon.
02:07 The indigenous people represent about 5% of the population in the area, and they deserve
02:20 a bigger participation to be included in this kind of summit and to be taken into account
02:28 when taking decisions.
02:30 And the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Felix Shikeri, warned that he
02:35 needs to reduce the toxic gases that go to the atmosphere.
02:40 Different strategies of reduction of toxic gases.
02:45 We need to stop the emission of toxic gases to the atmosphere, or at least reduce it.
02:54 We need as well to establish alliances between the countries, which is paramount in the fight
03:10 against climate change.
03:13 On Tuesday, in parallel to the meeting of the leaders of the Amazon Summit in Brazil,
03:17 there was a mobilization of the peoples of the Earth who presented their demands to be
03:21 included in the BLM declaration.
03:24 President Lula da Silva asked that the Amazon Summit be developed in two days, one of governmental
03:29 with the leaders of the region, and the other with the Amazon Dialogues, where the communities
03:34 can present their demands.
03:37 Among the requests of the social movements and indigenous peoples are the protection
03:40 of territories, confronting slave labor, food security and energy, and the economic transition
03:46 towards a bio-socio-economy, strengthened by science and technology.
03:51 They also seek a project of inclusion for indigenous peoples and support for traditional
03:55 and black communities, as well as measures against environmental racism.
04:04 On Tuesday in Argentina, members of indigenous communities changed themselves to the building
04:09 of the Supreme Court of Justice and began a hunger strike to demand the repeal of the
04:13 reform to the constitution of the province of Jujuy.
04:17 The native communities, members of the so-called Tercer Malon de la Paz, have spent a week
04:22 camping in the front of the judicial power building located in the city of Buenos Aires.
04:28 Faced with the refusal of the judges to receive them, three people changed themselves to the
04:32 steps of the building and started a hunger strike, both of food and drink.
04:37 The communities demand federal intervention in Jujuy and denounce that the reform imposed
04:42 by the governor, Gerardo Morales, violates ancestral rights over lands that the state
04:48 intends to use for lithium mining.
04:50 We have made this decision and we are going to stick to it.
04:57 Let them kill us if they want to, or our dead bodies.
05:00 They are going to send us back to Jujuy.
05:02 We will not return to Jujuy until the judge comes.
05:06 In this context, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel denounced the abuses
05:11 and indifference suffered by the indigenous communities of Jujuy.
05:17 It seems we are back in the dictatorship era, when indigenous people were persecuted for
05:22 the sake of the business.
05:24 They want a meeting with the Supreme Court, but the Supreme Court refuses to meet with
05:28 community representatives.
05:29 So we are mediating so that they can be heard.
05:32 It is their right, otherwise this would be a democracy for some and not for all.
05:39 We believe that lithium mining comes to finish the job of extermination of remaining indigenous
05:44 communities in all of the Northwest region, because lithium ores will be the excuse to
05:50 force our people out of their ancestral territories.
05:55 Thus the relationship of lithium with our native communities and the genocidal policy
06:00 we indigenous communities are facing.
06:04 In Chile on Tuesday, the Senate approved another extension of the state of exception in the
06:09 southern macro zone, which includes the Araucanía and Biabia regions.
06:13 The extension, previously passed at the Chamber of Deputies, provides for the deployment of
06:17 military and police forces in these regions with the alleged purpose of stopping violence.
06:23 The region is involved in a historical conflict between the Chilean state and the Mapuche
06:27 people ever since ancestral lands were taken away from the native communities and handed
06:33 over to forestry and logging companies.
06:35 Although Chilean President Gabriel Boric promised to end the state of exception, this is the
06:40 29th time such an extension has been granted.
06:43 Thank you.
07:00 Now we move on to other topics.
07:01 On Tuesday, the provincial candidates to the National Assembly of Ecuador begin the electoral
07:05 campaign for the general elections on August 20th.
07:08 The provincial candidates for deputies started their campaign activities after the situation
07:13 with the legal appeals of their candidacies, before the electoral court was resolved.
07:18 In this way, the campaign is formalized, which coincides with that of the presidential candidates,
07:23 besides the national candidates.
07:25 The National Electoral Council certified that there are no pending appeals and that the
07:29 lists of provincial assembly members are firm.

08:27 green light to allow and support the training to go ahead.
08:31 The announcement paves the way for the coalition of 11 Western countries participating in the
08:36 training program led by the Netherlands and Denmark to begin training Ukrainian pilots.
08:41 On the other hand, it must be emphasized that about material supplies and training personnel,
08:46 the Russian president has warned that Western weapons supplied to Kiev will only prolong
08:51 the war and will not change its outcome.
08:58 In the US, thousands of public workers in Los Angeles on Wednesday staged a 24-hour
09:03 strike and a massive mobilization to demand better working conditions.

09:13 among others, staged the protest, which is considered the most important one in the last
09:19 50 years for the locality.
09:21 The demonstration denounced and rejected unfair labor practices and the local government's
09:25 unwillingness to negotiate.
09:27 The strike comes in the midst of what California labor leaders have called a "hot summer of
09:32 labor," during which a wave of work stoppages has been fueled by the loss of value of wages
09:38 in the face of the pace of inflation and rising costs of living in the city of Los Angeles.
09:48 At least 41 people have died in a new shipwreck off the Italian island of Lampedusa in the
09:53 Mediterranean Sea.
09:54 Four survivors rescued by the Italian Coast Guard explained to the authorities that the
09:58 boat had left the Tunisian city of Sfax and that after about six hours of sailing the
10:03 ship capsized due to a large wave and 41 migrants, including three children, fell into the sea.
10:10 Last Saturday, two other shipwrecks off Lampedusa were reported, in which 34 people died.
10:16 The disembarkations continue on the Italian island, in whose reception center, with a
10:21 capacity for 300 people, nearly 2,500 people were crowded two days ago.

11:30 territory of the Sagorsk factory in the town of Sergeyev Posad near Moscow, local authorities
11:36 said.
11:37 Pyrotechnical products are manufactured at the Sergeyev Posad plant and the explosion
11:42 occurred in the assembly sector.
11:44 According to preliminary information, the explosion was caused by non-compliance with
11:48 the rules of the technological process.
11:50 The blast wave caused glass breakage in factory buildings and residential venues nearby.
11:57 The Russian investigative committee opened a criminal case for violation of the rules
12:01 of industrial safety of hazardous production facilities, which led to a fire.
12:06 No fatalities among the factory employees were reported.
12:09 Now we move on to other topics.
12:29 In the Primorye region, southeastern Russia, floods isolated at least nine localities.
12:35 Since early August, the local meteorological authorities have issued several warnings due
12:39 to heavy rains in different areas.
12:42 According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, this could worsen with the passage of tropical
12:47 cyclone Kanun, which, as according to forecasts, could bring torrential rains and strong winds
12:52 on August 10th-11th.
12:54 Located in the southern corner of Russia, the Primorye region borders China, North Korea
12:59 and the Sea of Japan.
13:01 According to the information provided by the institutions, the localities of Berezkovo,
13:05 Porkrovka, Sarovka, Meteorin Chinje, East Malaysia, Limoniki, Dalnikud, Dersu and Krasnoyarkovna
13:14 are the ones that are without communication access.
13:22 Thousands of flights and ferry services were suspended in South Korea on Wednesday as tropical
13:27 storm Kanun moves into the country's southern and eastern regions.
13:32 According to the South Korea Weather Agency, heavy rain and winds have expected to hit
13:36 the island of Jeju and then reach the mainland port of Dongyeon on Thursday.
13:41 Forecasters said tropical storm Kanun could have a devastating impact as it is expected
13:46 to lash the nation with winds of 90 to 154 kilometers per hour.
13:52 The storm comes weeks after the central and southern regions of the country were battered
13:56 by torrential rains that killed at least 41 people.
14:04 And China is facing off the worst floods ever recorded in the country.
14:09 On Wednesday, Chinese authorities reported that floods in Beijing last week alone killed
14:13 33 people and 18 others went missing.
14:16 The Mentaogu district is by far the most affected by the rains in the overflowing rivers.
14:22 There, at least 300,000 residents have been affected and the city is reporting almost
14:28 35,000 homes.
14:29 Government agencies said that Beijing reported the heaviest rainfall over the last 140 years,
14:35 for it got as much rain as it would get in a year.

15:59 On Wednesday, at least 20 people died and hundreds have been injured after intensifying
16:04 the combats between Sudan's army and the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces in many cities
16:10 near to the capital.
16:11 According to the Khartoum spokesperson for the Sudanese Red Crescent, Mohamed Abou Bakr,
16:17 14 people died in the town of Umm Dorman, a lawn neighboring Khartoum, because of the
16:21 constant bombardments between the parties to the conflict since April 15.
16:26 Also, six others were killed in Khartoum North, East Nile and South Khartoum by shells, missiles
16:32 and air raids, Abou Bakr said.
16:38 The military junta of Niger rejected the ECOWAS proposal to establish an advanced dialogue
16:45 following threats of foreign intervention in the country.
16:49 Military leaders assured that the request of the regional body is irritated after the
16:53 sanctions imposed which do not allow to receive this delegation in conditions of serenity
16:58 and security.
16:59 ECOWAS tried to send a delegation to Niamey City on Tuesday prior to the meeting to be
17:04 held by some countries of the bloc in Nigeria, where they will address the crisis facing
17:10 Niger.
17:11 The rebel military showed their unwillingness to engage in dialogue with the agency, as
17:15 well as with the US envoys seeking military intervention to put ousted President Mohamed
17:20 Bassem back in power.
17:26 Kenya's government and the opposition began new talks on Thursday to resolve a political
17:31 dispute following a series of violent protests.
17:34 Over the high cost of living and demands for electoral reforms.
17:38 The coalition representing opposition leader Raila Odinga said it wants to discuss the
17:42 rising cost of living, as well as electoral reforms after Odinga lost his fifth presidential
17:48 bid to William Ruto, claiming he had been cheated.
17:51 Ruto's opponent called off demonstrations in April and May after agreeing to dialogue,
17:56 but those talks broke down and the protesters took to the streets again.
18:01 Demands hope that these dialogues can address the issue of the economic crisis, taxes and
18:05 increasing prices of basic commodities such as fuel and food.
18:09 In other hand, President Ruto declared that he will not entertain talk on a power sharing
18:15 agreement.
18:16 Peace, stability and prosperity in whose name we gather here are not party issues.
18:29 These are Kenyan issues.
18:31 These are aspirations as the people of Kenya.
18:36 These issues should unite and never divide us.
18:40 Because we know that our country is more important than any one of us.
18:47 And we've been sent here by the president of the Republic of Kenya, Dr. William Samoei
18:53 Ruto, to come and sit with our brothers to find a solution to the issues that are being
19:02 brought on the table.
19:05 On Wednesday, the Japanese city of Nagasaki commemorates the 78th anniversary of the atomic
19:11 bomb being perpetrated by the United States.
19:13 The main activity was at the peace remedy in memory of the victims of the atomic bomb.
19:18 During the day, a wreath and a water offering were made remembering the dead victims and
19:23 the people who suffered internal and external burns during the explosion and who were desperately
19:29 asking the other survivors for water to quench their thirst.
19:33 In addition, as usual, a minute of silence was held at the exact time the bomb exploded,
19:38 11.02 am.
19:39 Also, a tribute was paid to the "Kibab Ushkash", a term used for the survivors of the atomic
19:46 bomb, the ravages of war and the consequences of radiation.
19:51 I appeal to the leaders of the nuclear weapons states and countries under the nuclear umbrella.
20:01 Now is the time to show courage and make the decision to free yourself from dependence
20:08 on nuclear deterrence.
20:10 And I call on them to move steadily forward on the path toward the abolition of nuclear
20:15 weapons through dialogue, not confrontation, on the basis of a security concept centered
20:21 on humanity.
