00:00 In Ecuador, early presidential legislative elections are advancing in different polling
00:12 stations.
00:13 No major incidents in national charities so far, although some Ecuadorian citizens abroad
00:16 have reported online difficulties to vote.
00:22 Guatemalan citizens continue going to polling stations on Sunday to democratically decide
00:26 who their next president will be.
00:28 Former First Lady Sandra Torres Casanova or academic Bernardo Arrevalo de Leon.
00:36 And in Niger, the military chief of the National Homeland Defense Council, General Abdurrahman
00:40 Chiani, warned Ecuador of his country's military response capacity.
00:48 Hello welcome to From the South, I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Televisual Studios in Havana,
00:52 Cuba.
00:53 Let's begin with the news.
01:05 In Ecuador, early presidential legislative elections are advancing in different polling
01:09 stations.
01:10 The National Electoral Council deployed a security team made up of the national police
01:15 and the armed forces.
01:16 The entity also signed an agreement with the Association of Ecuadorian Municipalities so
01:19 that the security of voters and candidates is guaranteed in all municipalities of the
01:24 country.
01:25 So far, the process develops without problems, although some situations have been reported
01:30 with Ecuadorian citizens abroad who have not been able to vote due to some online difficulties.
01:36 In a framework of the presidential elections and in the midst of a security operation,
01:42 candidates for the presidency of Ecuador take their participation to the polls.
01:47 They are accompanied by political forces.
01:52 In spite of the fact that Ecuadorians have been in a dilemma since August 9th in terms
01:56 of insecurity and increasing violence, eight of the candidates for the presidency are exercising
02:01 their right to vote.
02:02 The presidential candidate, Cristian Zurita, who replaced the assassinated candidate Fernando
02:08 Villavicencio, is not the exception.
02:12 In the middle of the voting, he declared to the press that Ecuador should take the country
02:16 forward with security and determination.
02:19 On the other hand, candidate Otto Sonnenholzner on his social media let citizens know that
02:29 they were on the way to change.
02:31 Sonnenholzner was guarded all the time while casting his ballot.
02:39 At least 13.4 million Ecuadorians must exercise their mandatory vote and are under alert due
02:44 to insecurity in the country.
02:47 I am happy for a healthy campaign, for a clean, sincere, honest campaign that is going to
02:56 give results today, that is going to allow us to change the country, to change things
03:02 for our people.
03:03 Yesterday, I had an unfortunate incident.
03:06 Unfortunately, there are more and more Ecuadorians who live in situations like this.
03:11 Thank God the police acted and the criminals are in custody.
03:17 The candidate of the Citizens' Revolution, led by former President Rafael Correa, Luisa
03:22 González, exercised her right to vote on Election Day on Sunday.
03:25 The presidential candidate went to the fourth polling station in the Canuto community, in
03:30 the city of Chone, to vote around 8 o'clock in the morning, local time.
03:34 The presidential candidate arrived at the site amidst a large police and military contingent
03:39 due to the wave of violence that the country is experiencing, and she was accompanied by
03:43 her partner Andres Arauz.
03:44 Luisa González is the only woman among the candidates for the presidency of Ecuador and
03:48 is leading the polls to succeed the current president, Guillermo Lazo.
03:52 Before casting her vote, González made statements to the press, in which she called on the National
03:56 Electoral Council to correct errors so that migrants abroad could exercise their right
04:01 to vote.
04:05 While exercising their right to vote, the Citizens' Revolution campaign partners offered
04:09 declarations.
04:10 We are in charge and the people will pronounce themselves with fortfulness for peace, for
04:16 democracy, for the hope of our people, for the resurgence of the homeland.
04:20 That is now in the hands of the Ecuadorian people.
04:23 Most probably it will be a single round.
04:27 In Ecuador, elections continue to develop normally with police and military presence
04:30 at the voting stations to guarantee security after recent events.
04:34 Polls in northern Quito mostly went to the polls early in the morning due to recent violent
04:38 incidents associated with the electoral environment.
04:40 Our correspondent Stefania Bravo gives us more details.
04:45 Hi there again, Stefania Bravo reporting from Quito, and right now I'm in the south of Quito
04:51 in one of the biggest polling stations in the province of Pichincha.
04:55 It's called Montufar, it's a school here in the south of Quito, and as you can see people
05:00 are still coming in to vote.
05:02 We have about two hours left before polling stations are closed and before no one else
05:07 can vote, so people are still coming in, they're coming in to vote.
05:11 We see less people here than we saw before in the north.
05:16 Usually what happens is that Ecuadorians go in the morning and vote earlier than later,
05:21 but people are still coming in.
05:22 People here in the south, as mentioned this is the biggest polling station here in the
05:27 south of Pichincha province, the province of Pichincha, where about close to 25,000
05:33 people come here to cast their ballots.
05:37 We have only a couple of hours left before polling stations are closed.
05:40 The CNE has said that they will start announcing official results at about 7.30 p.m. local
05:48 time.
05:49 We're still here, we're wanting to see what else is going to happen.
05:53 I do see here a couple of policemen, not as many policemen and military presence as I
06:00 saw before, but nevertheless everything is going smoothly thus far.
06:06 People are coming in with their children, with their families, grandparents.
06:10 So that's what we have for you thus far.
06:12 We'll bring you more news in a couple of hours.
06:17 Guatemala is also experiencing an election day on Sunday, the second round of its electoral
06:21 process to decide who will be its next president.
06:24 In this electoral election, citizens are called to choose between the former First Lady, Sandra
06:28 Torres Casanova, or the academic Bernardo Arevalo de Leon.
06:32 Arevalo, candidate of the Zemilla movement, is currently the favorite to win the run of
06:37 election if the polls come true, which predicts him as the next president of the Central American
06:41 country with 60 or 65 percent of the total votes.
06:45 Torres Casanova, on the other hand, won the first electoral round on June 20th with almost
06:49 900,000 votes, but polls indicate that she will fall short again in her intentions to
06:53 become president.
06:54 Guatemalans go to the polls in an atmosphere of maximum tension, as Guatemala's public
06:58 ministry, whose leadership is sanctioned by U.S. authorities for corruption, has become
07:03 the main protagonist of the elections.
07:10 And Guatemalan presidential candidates vote in the second round of the Central American
07:14 nation's general elections.
07:15 The presidential candidate for the Zemilla movement, Bernardo Arevalo, arrived to vote
07:20 at the La Patria School, located in a part of the capital.
07:24 The presidential hopeful called on Guatemalans to go to the polls with joy, tranquility and
07:28 peace.
07:29 The candidate of the National Unity of Hope Party, Sandra Torres, also cast her vote in
07:34 the capital city.
07:35 The country's president promised to hand over power on January 14th, 2024, to the winner
07:40 of this second round.

08:05 In Russia, the anti-aircraft defense managed to neutralize a new Kremlin kamikaze drone
08:09 attack on a military unit near the settlement of Novosyakhstyn.
08:13 The territory's governor, Vasily Golubev, reported that the radio-electronic warfare
08:17 systems were effectively managed to shoot down the three unmanned aerial vehicles launched
08:21 from Ukrainian-controlled territory.
08:23 He also noted that two of the drones were shot down in a military unit in the city of
08:27 Kamensk, and the third was found about a kilometer from the town of Novosyakhstyn.
08:32 The official added that the incident caused no structural damage and no casualties or
08:36 injuries were reported.
08:37 The U.S. Navy has sent warships to support the safe evacuation of ships in San Diego
08:59 Bay due to Hurricane Hillary.
09:01 In a statement, U.S. 3rd Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Michael Boyle informed that the mission
09:07 is to guarantee the safety of the sailors and ships in the bay.
09:11 He said that all necessary measures have been taken to avoid serious damage to the infrastructure
09:16 and the ships of the 3rd Fleet.
09:17 The commander explained that one aircraft carrier and two ships are already out of the
09:21 bay.
09:26 Hurricane Hillary brought heavy rains on Saturday through parts of Mexico's Baja California
09:30 Peninsula and the southwestern United States.
09:33 Officials warned that the powerful hurricane could cause catastrophic and potentially deadly
09:37 flooding.
09:38 The storm weakened on Saturday and dropped from category 4 to category 2 on the Cypress
09:43 Simpson scale, but was still capable of causing major damage.
09:46 Hurricane conditions are expected to continue along the Baja California coast on Sunday.
09:49 The storm is expected to weaken to a tropical storm before reaching southern California
09:54 and southern Nevada, with heavy rain and flooding still possible.
10:01 In the Spanish island of Tenerife, images of firefighters and police officers helping
10:05 with nighttime evacuations are emerging as firefighters make progress in their battle
10:09 against vast blazes.
10:11 The huge fire on the touristic island broke out late Tuesday in a mountainous area in
10:15 the northeast and quickly became the largest in the history of the Canary Islands.
10:20 So far, the fire, which has a perimeter of 70 kilometers, has raised 8,400 hectares,
10:25 just over 4 percent of the total area of Tenerife, and has forced more than 12,000 people to
10:30 leave their homes.

11:39 Welcome back from the south.
11:41 Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel arrived on Sunday in Angola to complete an official
11:45 visit to the African country.
11:47 At the 4th of February International Airport, the President was received by the Angolan
11:51 Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tete Antonio, and the island's ambassador to this African
11:56 nation, Esther Armenteros.
11:58 Local media have echoed the visit of the Cuban head of state, which the press has described
12:03 as a "photo-stepping strengthening bilateral cooperation."
12:06 Going to the Angolan press agency during his stay in Luanda, the President will hold talks
12:10 with his counterpart, Joao Lorenzo, and will address the National Assembly, and is expected
12:13 to sign several agreements.
12:15 Cuba and Angola maintain historical ties of friendship and solidarity.
12:20 The military chief of the Nigerian National Homeland Defense Council, General Abdur Rahman
12:27 Chiani, warned the economic community of West African states of his country's military
12:32 response capabilities.
12:33 The junta's leader addressed the country after holding a meeting with ECOWAS Commissioner
12:39 for Political Affairs and Peace, Abdel Fattah Oumoussa.
12:42 Although he ratified that the intention is not to seize power and that there will be
12:46 a transition that will not last more than three years, he assured that attacking Niger
12:50 militarily will not be a walk in the park.
12:53 In his televised speech, he accused the community organization of serving as a platform to attack
12:57 his country in collaboration with a foreign army.
13:04 And several thousand people rallied in Yanmey, Niger, in support of the military junta, which
13:08 announced it is considering a transition of no more than three years as the threat of
13:12 a West African military intervention still looms over Niger.
13:16 Niger's new military ruler said on Saturday that the transition of power would not be
13:20 beyond three years, and warned that any attack of the country would not be easy for those
13:24 involved.
13:25 Chiani's warning came after an ECOWAS delegation arrived in the country for a final diplomatic
13:30 push before deciding where to take military action against the country's new rulers.
13:34 In his 12-minute speech, Chiani denounced what he called the illegal and inhuman sanctions
13:38 imposed by ECOWAS against Niger.
13:41 He also announced 30 days of national dialogue to draw up concrete proposals to lay the foundations
13:46 of a new constitutional life.
13:50 On Saturday, a team from the European Union that is observing the upcoming elections in
13:54 Zimbabwe denied a report published by a state-run newspaper, accusing them of being involved
13:59 in a bribery scandal.
14:01 Voters in the South African country, who since independence in 1980 by the ruling ZANU-PF
14:06 party, will vote on August 23 to elect a president, legislators and local government councillors.
14:13 In anonymous sources, the Herald newspaper reported on Friday that an EU media team had
14:18 met with 18 journalists and handed out whiskey and shopping vouchers to influence the journalists
14:23 to make outlandish claims, intended to tarnish the entire electoral process.
14:28 The EU election observation mission stated that these accusations were based on fabricated
14:33 rumours.
14:34 It also described previous attempts to discredit its mission and conclude that such stories
14:37 were "blatant misinformation of the Zimbabwean population".
14:45 Dozens of mass graves have been discovered in Darfur, western Sudan.
14:49 Humanitarian organisations claim they contain more than a thousand corpses.
14:52 The announcement was made by Marceline Rijka, regional emergency director of the International
14:57 Rescue Committee.
14:58 She affirms that this is one of the bloodiest episodes of violence in the history of the
15:02 region.
15:03 Darfur has been for decades the scene of heavy ethnic clashes, now aggravated by the
15:10 conflict that broke out in April between the army and parliamentary groups.
15:14 Last July, the same organisation and other agencies allied with the United Nations confirmed
15:19 the discovery of 87 corpses in the same area.
