00:00 Let's say that every 100 people have pulmonary hypertension.
00:04 This is more common among the elderly.
00:07 According to researchers,
00:09 the number of people with this type of hypertension will increase in the next decades.
00:16 That's why it's important to talk about this today
00:20 with Dr. Annie de la Cruz Cruz-Gustelo, a pulmonologist,
00:25 about the pulmonary hypertension of PH.
00:29 Good morning, doctor.
00:30 Good morning.
00:31 Good morning.
00:34 Good morning, Dr. Annie. This is Diana and Audrey.
00:37 Okay, doctor. We often hear about hypertension,
00:42 but today we will talk about pulmonary hypertension.
00:46 What is pulmonary hypertension, doc?
00:49 And what is the difference between it and the common type of hypertension?
00:55 Pulmonary hypertension is a high pressure of the blood vessels,
01:04 particularly the pulmonary artery,
01:06 which is located inside the lungs of people.
01:10 What are the symptoms of this?
01:13 Are the symptoms the same as the common type of hypertension?
01:17 Okay, so this is very much different.
01:22 Basically, the symptoms are more of exertional dyspnea.
01:27 It means that when there is physical activity or the patient is moving,
01:33 he will notice that he has difficulty breathing.
01:36 And it is progressive, meaning while the disease is mild,
01:41 he may feel a slight breathlessness when he gets up and down.
01:47 But as the disease progresses, from getting up and down to simple activities of daily living,
01:54 such as eating, bathing, he will feel the difficulty in breathing.
02:00 The second is the blue color of the lips.
02:06 This also has the side effects of dizziness or sometimes the patient loses consciousness.
02:14 And when there is a complication in the right side of the heart,
02:19 there is also a feeling of numbness, from the feet to the chest.
02:24 Okay, doctor, what are the risk factors and possible complications
02:30 that pulmonary hypertension patients may experience?
02:34 Basically, the risk factors or the possible side effects of developing this disease
02:42 is number one, if they use illegal drugs like amphetamine or methamphetamine.
02:48 It is a risk.
02:49 Also, if they use diet pills like fenfluramine or despenfluramine
02:56 or the more well-known Bangkok pills,
03:00 it is a risk that these people will have this disease.
03:05 Some would be having COPD, which is caused by smoking,
03:12 or other diseases like heart disease, like coronaries, congestive heart failure,
03:18 or heart valve problems.
03:20 And there are other diseases like liver cirrhosis, CKD, or chronic kidney disease.
03:28 There are also infections like HIV, some parasitic infections,
03:35 some would also cause connective tissue diseases like lupus,
03:40 leroderma, or rheumatoid arthritis, and HIV.
03:45 Sometimes, there is also congenital heart disease,
03:50 or when the heart is just born, there are holes or complications in the heart
03:55 that can cause risk of pulmonary hypertension.
04:00 But there is also a small percentage that even without a cause,
04:04 or what is called idiopathic, this disease can still occur.
04:10 Doc, what are the available treatments for individuals with this condition?
04:15 As of now, because there are already many studies,
04:20 there are already many new medicines available to lower the blood vessel pressure in the liver.
04:27 But if the situation is getting worse, or if there are structural abnormalities,
04:35 even if it is not reversible, there are many options of medicines
04:41 that can lower the blood vessel pressure.
04:46 But of course, it is still very important to go to your doctor
04:50 because the treatment is different depending on the cause of the increase in blood vessel pressure in your liver.
04:59 Okay, doctor. What can you advise or remind our KRS-P doc
05:05 on how to avoid pulmonary hypertension?
05:09 This is a very good opportunity.
05:13 First, do not use the medicines that I mentioned that you can avoid,
05:19 such as using illegal medicines, like amphetamines, methamphetamines, or more commonly known as shabu.
05:27 Second, avoid using medicines that you do not know what the effect will be,
05:33 such as diet pills, like paninigarilio.
05:37 Avoid using these. And if you have symptoms that I mentioned,
05:43 it is really good to go to your doctor to be examined and given an accurate diagnosis.
05:50 Those are the important tips that Dr. Annie gave.
05:53 Thank you very much, Dr. Annie de la Cruz-Gustillo, for your free telemedicine this morning.
05:57 Thank you, doc.
05:58 Thank you, doc.
