00:02 - Historic day, landmark day in Kentucky, isn't it?
00:06 - Yeah, so like you said, sports betting is live
00:11 and legal in the state of Kentucky.
00:14 Starting with in-person betting this morning,
00:17 the governor there kicked things off
00:19 right around 10 o'clock at the Churchill Downs
00:23 Race and Sports Book there at the home
00:25 of the Kentucky Derby.
00:26 So certainly some exciting hours and days ahead
00:31 for residents and sports bettors in Kentucky.
00:36 And just kind of how we got to this point,
00:40 the governor signed this legislation back in March
00:45 and now it is live as of this morning.
00:48 And that would be one of the fastest states
00:51 to go from the governor signing legislation
00:54 to a regulated sports book accepting its first wager.
00:59 And the plan had always been, the goal had always been
01:06 to get sports betting up and running in time
01:11 for the NFL betting season, which of course,
01:14 as we all know and are eagerly anticipating
01:18 kickoff tonight.
01:19 So like I said, starts in-person this morning
01:24 already underway and there are right now
01:28 eight locations around the state accepting bets
01:31 and a few more to be coming in the next couple of weeks
01:36 and months as additional things get situated.
01:41 Pat Evans, my colleague over at Legal Sports Report
01:44 has been covering this market extensively
01:47 over the last couple of months and years really.
01:50 And he has a live blog going at legalsportsreport.com
01:55 just kind of tracking the day's events.
01:58 So I suggest everybody check that out
02:01 for up to the minute action that's going on there.
02:06 Now, a couple of unique aspects
02:10 to the Kentucky sports betting market.
02:12 Like I said, in-person wagering live now,
02:15 online betting will start in a couple of weeks
02:18 on September 28th.
02:20 These in-person sports books are strictly at racetracks.
02:25 We do see some sports books at racetracks
02:28 and other markets across the country.
02:30 Kentucky is one of, if not the only one
02:33 to host those in-person retail sports books
02:37 strictly at the state's racetracks.
02:41 And one other interesting thing is it's 18 and over
02:47 to place a bet at a Kentucky sports book in-person.
02:52 Some of the apps too, when they come online
02:56 in the next couple of weeks will follow state law,
02:59 which is that 18 and over.
03:01 Though there will be a few outliers, if you will,
03:04 that will require you to be 21 plus
03:08 like it is most everywhere else.
03:10 So again, there's a full list of locations
03:13 where you can bet now in Kentucky
03:16 and whether that age limit will be 18 or 21.
03:19 It's all online at legalsportsreport.com.
03:23 Like I said, Pat is covering this extensively
03:26 throughout the day.
03:26 So yeah, plenty of action happening in Kentucky
03:31 this morning and in the days and weeks ahead.
