00:00 An escalator at Langham Place Mall in Hong Kong malfunctioned, sending shoppers
00:03 flying. And when two engineers were called in to take a look at the problem,
00:07 they were later arrested for tampering with evidence. This happened at one of
00:10 Hong Kong's longest escalators, which started moving in the opposite direction,
00:13 injuring 18 people. Videos shot by mall security and witnesses show footage of
00:18 surprised riders caught in a dangerous pileup after having lost their balance
00:22 and tumbling downwards. It is one of those nightmare scenarios. Cops arrested
00:27 two engineers from Otis Elevator who were originally called to assess what
00:30 had happened, but later were accused of tampering with evidence after allegedly
00:33 having adjusted the escalators brake system after being told that no one was
00:37 allowed to change anything. One woman who suffered from an injured leg told the
00:40 South China Morning Post, "I was going up the escalator and it was two times
00:44 faster than normal." One commenter says, "No man, that's crazy. I thought it would
00:47 just freeze up and stop. Nope." Yep, while technology can be a blessing, it can also
00:51 be a dangerous curse. On Watch Trending back in 2015, we reported on an incident
00:56 in which a woman in China died saving her child from an escalator in the ailing
01:00 department store. She managed to push her son to safety before falling into a
01:03 loose floor panel and being dragged into the actual escalator mechanism itself
01:07 where she was killed. And more recently, a substitute teacher from New Jersey fell
01:11 to her death in the World Trade Center's Oculus Transit hub, toppling off of a
01:15 high escalator while reaching for a hat drop by her twin sister. So do these
01:19 tragic incidents make you think twice before riding an escalator? Let us know
01:22 in the comments below. For more stories go to whatstrending.com.
