00:00 Hi Peter, how you doing? I'm Jodie, nice to meet you.
00:03 Nice to meet you.
00:04 I have to say I love these earrings by the way.
00:05 My daughters gave them to me.
00:06 Did they?
00:07 Yeah, I think that they thought they were bees, you know, because I'm a beekeeper.
00:12 But I actually think that they're deer flies.
00:14 Right.
00:15 Which bite people.
00:16 That's very specific that you know that, interesting.
00:19 Well, I know deer flies and I know bees and these look more like deer flies to me.
00:23 Well they're absolutely fantastic, I love them.
00:25 Listen, congratulations on this, I mean all the success so far.
00:28 Tell me, what is it like getting a standing ovation at Venice for eight minutes?
00:33 I mean, it's difficult to take in, you know, I think it would be difficult to take in even
00:42 for the world's biggest narcissist.
00:45 So at one point I turned to Jessica and I said, I think it's gone on long enough, should
00:50 we just leave?
00:51 And we actually started, I started to sort of inch out and she said, no, I think they
00:55 want to keep clapping.
00:57 So you know, you feel like you have to perform if you're an actor.
01:04 The trick I think in receiving that, and I've done theatre and stuff where I every night
01:11 got it, not like that, but it's to really just stand there and receive it.
01:16 That's your only job.
01:17 It's difficult for an actor to know that, but that's all we have to do.
01:20 Eight minutes is quite long, was there part of you that was like, okay guys, we know you
01:23 love it, but can we just sit down?
01:26 No.
01:27 No, I felt like in the end we actually did kind of cut it off by leaving.
01:33 And I thought, I've thought since when people ask me this question, we should have just
01:38 stood there and just seen if we could break a record.
01:41 I love that.
01:42 And listen, it was quite emotional seeing you pick up Best Actor, so well deserved,
01:46 but that award is massive.
01:47 What have you done with it?
01:48 How did you get it through customs on the way home?
01:51 Well, it's not only massive, but it makes a lot of noise.
01:53 It has these little metal pieces on the side that clank, so it's loud and big.
02:00 Weirdly, when I walked through the Venice airport, I think it seemed like people thought
02:04 I'd won it at a golf tournament or something like that.
02:07 I don't think anybody, a lot of the locals there didn't seem to know that it had happened.
02:15 And to me it is a huge honor because it's a jury of people whose job it was to do this.
02:22 I'm a member of various other voting committees and it's not your job to do that.
02:32 And I felt really honored because I respect every member of that jury.
02:36 And was it nice that Maggie was there as well, to share that moment in person?
02:40 Yeah, that was just a chance, that was luck.
02:44 Because I wasn't there when she won Venice two years before for Lost Daughter, for screenwriting.
02:51 Yeah, you're never going to let that down then are you?
02:53 [laughter]
