00:00 Reim, just 5 kilometers from the Gaza border.
00:03 Peleg Oref was working as a bartender at the festival.
00:07 "The atmosphere was great.
00:09 People were dancing and smiling, peaceful people.
00:13 And then the rockets started firing on us.
00:18 At the moment we didn't know anything."
00:20 Under the cover of the missiles, shown here recorded on a car's dash camera, Hamas gunmen
00:26 broke through the security fence, which separates the sealed off Gaza Strip from Israel, and
00:31 started shooting.
00:32 "We don't know where the terrorists are.
00:35 Some of them are here, some of them are there, some of them are here.
00:39 We didn't know what to do.
00:40 Luckily here there is a small dry river, so we just left the car and we entered the river,
00:45 entered some bushes."
00:46 Peleg survived, many others didn't.
00:50 This is what is left.
00:52 They killed about 260 people and dragged others to Gaza as hostages.
00:58 The fate of some is still unclear.
01:01 Volunteers from the Zaka Rescue Organization search for victims' mobile phones to help
01:07 identify their location.
01:09 "When we arrived here around one or two in the morning, after Shabbat, after Shematora,
01:17 we saw bodies everywhere.
01:19 Some of them burnt.
01:22 Some of them killed from gunshots or from explosions.
01:26 I've worked in this for a long time, but I've never seen anything like this before.
01:32 To see this here, it's like a holocaust."
01:38 The Israeli military are still searching for militants.
01:41 There have been more infiltrations since, and the area has not been entirely secured.
01:47 "We know that there are still terrorists in this area, so that's why we're still
01:51 clearing the entire field.
01:53 It's going to take some much more time, but we're doing it and we still find terrorists
01:59 that are running around in this area."
02:02 The unprecedented attacks have raised many questions about how this happened.
02:07 "The responsible ones for the intelligence, we're responsible for the defense.
02:12 We will question ourselves.
02:14 We will reach all and everything that we understand why it happened to us, but now
02:21 it doesn't matter.
02:23 Now what matters is that we need to fight, we need to stay focused."
02:27 For now, Israel is united in what the government calls its war against Hamas.
02:32 But anger is already replacing grief over this failure of intelligence.
