00:00 lot to digest Gabriel, what can you tell us that matters to our county?
00:03 I'll be honest, you say a lot to digest today and it's been quite the extraordinary day.
00:10 It all started when David Cameron walked up Downing Street earlier this morning and he
00:16 was appointed as Foreign Secretary by Rishi Sunak. That move has been criticised by many
00:23 politicians including from Conservative benches. Many say well actually he's not an MP, he
00:29 won't have a voice in the Commons and that has been criticised by many. There have been
00:34 a number of other changes as well in today's government reshuffle. We understand that Tom
00:40 Tugendhat's position as Security Minister is safe and we've also seen Laura Trott be
00:45 promoted. She's the Sevenoaks MP. She used to be the Pensions Minister. She's now been
00:51 promoted to the Chief Secretary to the Treasury. She'll have the second highest position there
00:57 just below Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor. So that's quite a move for her. One of the biggest
01:06 changes to today has been the new appointment of the Home Secretary. James Cleverley has
01:11 taken over that and he'll have a big entree to fill, particularly with small boat crossings.
01:16 It's one of Rishi Sunak's five pledges to stop the boats. They haven't stopped, they
01:21 have decreased this year but he'll also have the Rwanda policy to deal with. We're set
01:27 to hear from the Supreme Court a little bit more on that this week, whether or not it
01:30 will be lawful or not, because remember earlier this year the Court of Appeals ruled it unlawful.
01:37 Well we spoke to a refugee charity based in Dover earlier today to find out what they
01:42 would like to see from the new Home Secretary. Yeah, absolutely. She's done nothing but damage
01:49 to an already fractured immigration system. Her constant inflammatory rhetoric has caused
01:56 almost irreparable damage to the public opinion on migration and we're going to see the ripples
02:01 from that going forward for a really long time. It absolutely damages it. Even the transition
02:06 between Patel and Sumanna Brabhaman, it just throws everything up in the air, doesn't it?
02:10 We have to almost start again and obviously we hope for the best. We hope that somebody
02:14 will come in with some new compassionate resolutions.
02:22 Another issue the Home Secretary will face is policing and we know Van Kent Police have
02:27 long been calling for more police officers to join their ranks. We've been speaking to
02:32 Matthew Scott, he's our Police and Crime Commissioner for the region, to find out what he would
02:36 like to see from the new Home Secretary.
02:39 I think there are some things that James can work with us on, including completing the
02:43 review of the funding formula which the Home Office has been supporting and also delivering
02:48 things like the action plan on anti-social behaviour and the drug strategy as well. So
02:53 I think he will be proactive, I think he'll be really beneficial. Laura Trott will be
02:57 excellent at the Treasury. She's been really effective as the Pensions Minister and as
03:01 the Sevenoaks MP. When you look at the things that she's achieved in Sevenoaks, such as
03:06 the funding that she's secured for the railway station, for the new school, for saving the
03:11 ticketing offices, as well as the travel card for Slonney residents, she's been really effective
03:17 in a very short time as a Member of Parliament, so I'm sure she'll take that energy to the
03:20 Treasury.
03:21 Well, Avi, as I said earlier, it's been quite the extraordinary day and I don't think it's
03:26 quite over yet. In the past hour we've seen Esther McVey, she used to be a Minister, enter
03:31 number 10.
