00:00 Human Rights Watch reports apparent war crimes in the siege of Mariupol, according to new
00:05 report and asks for justice.
00:08 The document denounces that the Russian assault on Mariupol between February and March 2022
00:14 left thousands of civilians dead and injured, including many in apparently unlawful attacks
00:19 and trapped hundreds of thousands for weeks without basic services.
00:23 "The worst thing was not the food, but the heat, and the medicine.
00:30 People were dying because it was not there.
00:33 Most of the people were injured, both old and children."
00:37 Gainyshev Stov, former Mariupol resident, walks through the streets of an isolated city
00:43 where basic services lack.
00:45 "So we are left without gas, without water, without power.
00:49 We are absolutely isolated from civilization.
00:53 No internet, no update, nothing."
00:56 Human Rights Watch and Ukrainian NGO Truthhounds documented in detail 14 attacks that damaged
01:01 or destroyed 18 buildings, killing and injuring civilians.
01:05 They include attacks that struck two hospitals, the city's drama theater sheltering civilians,
01:10 a food storage facility, an aid distribution site and a supermarket.
01:15 "Our analysis has led us to conclude that international bodies and governments committed
01:20 to justice should investigate and appropriately prosecute 10 individuals who we name, including
01:25 President Putin and potentially other commanders who appear linked to overseeing war crimes
01:31 in Mariupol."
01:32 The report is based on 240 interviews with mostly displaced Mariupol residents by Human
01:38 Rights Watch and Truthhounds and an analysis of over 850 photos and videos, documents and
01:44 dozens of satellite images.
