00:00 The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of
00:14 Russia, Sergey Lavrov.
00:18 The cycle of hearings at the International Court of Justice over the legal consequences
00:22 of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and Jerusalem continues.
00:27 Colombia and Cuba are among Wednesday's speakers.
00:33 And meanwhile, in Palestine, an Israeli airstrike on the residential building in Deir al-Bala
00:37 killed at least 25 people in the central Gaza Strip.
00:44 Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:46 My name is Belén de los Santos and from the Tesser studios in Havana, Cuba, we begin with
00:50 the news.
00:51 The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of
00:55 Russia, Sergey Lavrov, in the framework of the strengthening of the ties of friendship
01:00 and bilateral cooperation between Caracas and Moscow.
01:04 Russia's highest diplomatic authority arrived at the Medeflores Presidential Palace, where
01:08 he met with the Venezuelan President.
01:11 The senior officials reaffirmed their willingness to strengthen the strategic and bilateral
01:15 partnership of the two countries, and stressed that both countries share a solid relationship
01:21 based on friendship and solidarity.
01:23 Lavrov and Maduro also discussed issues such as interaction in the international arena,
01:29 including the regional and global situation, advocating the establishment of a multipolar
01:34 world order, and upholding the principles of respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity,
01:40 and equality among states.
01:44 In this context, at a joint press conference between the foreign ministers of Venezuela
01:49 and Russia, the head of Russian diplomacy stressed the stable level of strategic partnership
01:54 with Venezuela, referring that it has become a truly friendship for more than 150 years.
02:02 Lavrov indicated that both Moscow and Caracas coincide in a determination to achieve greater
02:08 democracy in the international arena, while rejecting the blackmail and illegal sanctions
02:13 of the United States and its allies.
02:16 The Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil assured that this meeting would strengthen the friendship,
02:21 solidarity and cooperation between the nations that have a history of alliance and brotherhood
02:27 in the face of adversity.
02:34 Venezuela is one of our closest and most trusted friends in Latin America and in the world
02:38 in general.
02:41 We are united by close strategic partnership relations that have a value in themselves
02:46 and that those suffering the face of the international situation.
02:51 We agree on important aspects of the international agenda based on the bonds of friendship between
02:55 our peoples.
02:57 The Russian Foreign Minister said that the cooperation between Moscow and Caracas upholds
03:02 the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.
03:08 We talked in detail about cooperation in the international arena.
03:11 We agreed on the need to strive for justice and democratization of international relations,
03:20 the strict compliance with all the principles of the UN Charter in its entirety.
03:24 We jointly expressed the principle of respect for the unity of sovereign states without
03:32 blackmail, without unilateral coercive measures by Washington and its satellites, and we considered
03:41 that our cooperation on different international platforms is an important joint contribution
03:46 for the creation of a more just and multipolar world.
03:50 For his part, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ivan Gil reiterated that the relationship between
03:55 Moscow and Caracas is of a strategic nature at all levels.
04:03 Venezuela and Russia have built a very important strategic relationship based not only on cooperation
04:14 in the bilateral aspects mentioned by the Foreign Minister, which have to do with the
04:19 energy, economic and financial sectors, with sports, culture, tourism, industry and agriculture,
04:30 but also based on the fact that Russia and Venezuela also share principles in the international
04:36 field.
04:38 Foreign Minister Ivan Gil also pointed out that Venezuela has received support from Russia
04:43 to move forward in spite of the sanctions applied by the United States.
04:49 Venezuela with its moral, with its capacity, with the instructions of President Nicolás
04:54 Maduro, we have found a way to move forward despite the sanctions.
04:59 We have also seen how other countries, such as the Russian Federation, have also found
05:04 that way.
05:06 Those attacks have made us stronger.
05:08 They are illegal.
05:09 They are illegitimate.
05:11 They must be lifted.
05:12 They hurt us, but Venezuela has found a way to move forward, with or without them.
05:18 We stay in Venezuela, where the President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez,
05:23 denied the statements made by the opposition representative, Gerardo Blair, who claimed
05:27 to avoid establishing meetings to prevent the media pressure.
05:31 The head of the National Assembly reaffirmed that in addition to the meetings, several
05:35 agreements have been signed in several cities of the national territory.
05:39 Also Rodríguez affirmed that members of the Venezuelan opposition have not stopped being
05:44 afraid of the media, asserting that from now on the meetings will be held in Caracas, in
05:49 front of the different national and international media.
05:52 Likewise, Jorge Rodríguez indicated that while the members of the United Platform attended
05:57 the meetings convened, they were planning destabilizing acts against the country and
06:02 were seeking to make an attempt against the life of President Nicolás Maduro and other
06:07 high officials.
06:15 And yesterday Blair said, I call him with name and surname because he lied, that he
06:19 preferred to meet abroad at other meetings to avoid media pressure.
06:23 That is a lie.
06:33 During eight months we have met at least 14 times in the city of Caracas, the representatives
06:37 of the Unitary Platform and the representatives of the Bolivarian government.
06:50 Denied Mr. Gerardo Blair.
06:51 It is false, without considering the countless times that I have met with all of them here
06:56 in the city of Caracas.
07:05 We have gone to other cities to sign agreements.
07:08 They have acted as a kind of notaries or registrars in those cities at their request.
07:12 We have had no problems in that sense.
07:22 But to say that they cannot meet in the city of Caracas because journalists make them very
07:26 nervous is not only a lie, it is blatant nonsense.
07:33 In this context, Rodríguez also summoned all the sectors of the country next Monday
07:37 to sign the document of the proposed electoral calendar that will be delivered to the National
07:42 Electoral Council.
07:48 We want to make a formal call to all the sectors of the political, economic and social life
07:52 of Venezuela, political, social, economic, cultural, religious and academic, so that
08:05 this document that the drafting commission has been working on in such a thorough and
08:10 conciatious manner, we are already working on the fourth draft with all the ideas that
08:15 have been expressed, with all the calendar proposals, with all the proposals for electoral
08:27 guarantees, with all the proposals of electoral principles, and we have already made the decision
08:32 to organize a broad discussion table for other topics beyond the specifically presidential
08:37 electoral issue.

09:03 Welcome back to From the South.
09:31 In the Netherlands, progresses are made in the cycle of hearings at the International
09:35 Court of Justice on the legal consequences of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank,
09:40 Gaza and East Jerusalem.
09:42 The judges of the organization continue to listen to arguments presented by the representatives
09:47 of different countries.
09:49 After two previous days where South Africa, Palestine, Bolivia and other states presented
09:54 their arguments against Tel Aviv's actions, this Wednesday is the turn of the ambassadors
09:59 of Colombia and Cuba, among others.
10:02 So far, the speakers have denounced the multiple and widely documented crimes of the Zionist
10:07 government against the Palestinian civilian population, both in Gaza and the West Bank,
10:13 since 1967.
10:14 The 15-judge panel is asked to review Israel's occupation, settlement and annexation, as
10:20 well as policies aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the holy
10:26 city of Jerusalem.
10:31 Meanwhile in Palestine, on Wednesday, an Israeli airstrike on the residential building in Deir
10:35 al-Bala killed at least 25 people in the central Gaza Strip.
10:40 According to local media, among the victims of the bombings were four women and four children,
10:45 and so far the number of wounded is unknown.
10:48 It should be noted that also on Tuesday, six people were killed after an attack on a vehicle
10:52 in the same locality.
10:54 On the other hand, the health authorities denounced that in the last 24 hours, Israel
10:58 committed 11 massacres, killing 118 civilians and wounding more than 163 locals.
11:06 In this regard, Gazans warned that meanwhile hundreds of corpses remain in the streets,
11:11 and under the rubble, the Israeli army prevents rescue teams and residents from reaching them,
11:17 while the latest overall death toll stands at 29,708 since October 7.
11:27 In Palestine, dozens of civilians were killed and others were injured in this evening in
11:32 Israeli strikes targeting several civilian homes in the Seytoun, southeast of Gaza City.
11:38 According to local news media, the Israeli bombing targeted houses belonging to the families
11:43 of Naim, Khalifa, Shonoda and Yassin, which resulted in the killing and injury of scores
11:49 of civilians.
11:50 The majority of casualties are still trapped under the rubble of the houses and cannot
11:54 be reached by civil defense vehicles and ambulances due to the intensity of fire by the occupations,
12:01 warplanes, tanks and drones.
12:03 Israel continues its artillery bombardment against neighborhoods in the outskirts of
12:08 Juhaiya in Gaza, which resulted in the injury of several civilians.
12:18 In Gaza Strip, the World Health Organization, controlled by the Israeli army, is no longer
12:22 functioning after weeks of a long siege, but in the facility still remains a number of
12:27 patients in critical conditions.
12:29 Our correspondent in the area, Nur Harassin, brings us all the details.
12:34 The World Health Organization managed to evacuate 18 patients from the Al-Nasr Hospital and
12:39 hospitalized them and transferred them to the Shahada Al-Aqsa Hospital, which is located
12:46 in Dar al-Balah.
12:47 They managed to do the same thing two days ago, evacuating 14 patients.
12:52 And this brings the total of patients that were evacuated from the Al-Nasr Hospital up
12:58 to 32 patients.
13:00 Some of them are with critical injuries, some of them with kidney failure, but still we
13:06 are talking about more than 100 people who are still inside the hospital.
13:12 Dr. Ashraf al-Qadra, who is the spokesperson of the Palestinian Health Ministry, said that
13:18 these people are in critical condition.
13:21 They need to be transferred.
13:23 The World Health Organization should be pressuring Israel into allowing these people outside of
13:30 the hospital and allow the World Health Organization to evacuate the patients from the hospital.
13:38 And this comes as the hospitals in Gaza are already suffering with the lack of medicine
13:43 and medical supplies.
13:44 So even the patients who were transferred outside of the Al-Nasr Hospital, their lives
13:50 are in danger because of the lack of medicine and because also to the continuous Israeli
13:55 attacks around hospitals.
13:59 And now we are talking about more than 15 main hospitals that shut down here in Gaza
14:05 since the 7th of October.
14:06 And we're talking about dozens of clinics and health care clinics that shut down due
14:12 to the Israeli continuous attacks on the hospitals and the lack of medicine and medical supplies.
14:19 And in the latest statement by the Palestinian Health Ministry, they said that the death
14:24 toll in Gaza has reached 29,120 people, 70 percent of them are women and children.
14:34 Nurhar Rezin, Telesur, Gaza.
14:37 In this context, the United States on Tuesday vetoed an Arab-backed UN resolution calling
14:42 for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas in the
14:47 besieged Gaza Strip.
14:48 The proposal, which received 13 votes in favor with the United Kingdom abstaining, also rejected
14:54 the forcibly displacement of the Palestinian civilian population in violation of international
14:59 law and demanded the immediate cessation of such violations and the immediate and unconditional
15:05 release of all hostages.
15:07 It also called for unrestricted humanitarian access to and throughout the Gaza Strip.
15:12 U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield insisted that approval of the Algerian proposal would
15:18 jeopardize ongoing negotiations.
15:21 This is the third time that the Security Council, whose resolutions are binding, has failed
15:26 to reach a joint statement calling for a ceasefire in Gaza because of the U.S. veto.
15:36 In other news, on Wednesday in Syria, at least two civilians were killed after a new attack
15:40 by Israeli forces in a residential area of Damascus.
15:44 In this regard, Syrian authorities reported that approximately at 9.40 a.m. local time,
15:50 Israel launched an airstrike with several missiles from the direction of the occupied
15:54 Syrian Gawan and targeted a residential building in the Kafr Sosa neighborhood in Damascus.
16:01 In this sense, the bombing caused the killing of two civilians in addition to material damage
16:06 to the targeted building and some nearby buildings.
16:09 On the other hand, Syrian authorities condemned that Israel systematically attacks Syrian
16:14 territory in spite of numerous denunciations by Damascus before the UN Security Council,
16:20 in which it points out that these actions infringe its sovereignty and threaten regional
16:25 stability.

17:10 Welcome back to From the South.
17:12 On Wednesday in Pakistan, the Pakistan Muslim League and the Pakistan People's Party confirmed
17:17 the agreement to form a new coalition government in the country.
17:20 Precisely, the agreement establishes the end of the political impasse in Pakistan, where
17:25 the authorities will have until next February 29th to convene the first preliminary session
17:30 that will decide the new government.
17:33 On the other hand, while these alliances are being forged, the movement for the Justice
17:38 Party of Pakistan continues with its campaign to recover the seats this party alleged belonged
17:43 to them after allegedly having manipulated the results of the elections in some regions
17:49 of the country.
17:50 In this way, allegations of electoral fraud were compounded when a senior official resigned
17:55 from his post on Saturday after taking responsibility for the manipulation of election results in
18:01 at least five districts in the province of Punjab.
18:07 On Wednesday in India, police officers repressed with tear gas farmers marching to demand legal
18:12 guarantees for their production.
18:14 The farmers resumed the march after failing to achieve results they considered acceptable
18:19 in the negotiations with the government.
18:22 The sector is demanding an agreement that establishes favorable crop prices for products
18:27 such as legumes, corn and cotton for the next five years.
18:31 Farmers trying to make their way to the Indian capital from the neighboring states of Punjab
18:36 and Haryana have been pressing on the outskirts of the Indian capital for a week.
18:41 However, police forces fired tear gas shells at the protesters as they tried to approach
18:47 New Delhi.
18:52 Thousands of Greek farmers also protested in Athens on Tuesday to demand financial aid,
18:57 escalating a four-week showdown with a government that says it has no more funds to help.
19:02 According to local police, some 8,000 farmers took part in the protests, honking horns and
19:08 waving Greek flags on dozens of tractors driven to the capital from across the country.
19:14 The farmers began protesting last month, joining a wider movement that has seen roads blocked
19:20 in France, Germany, Italy, Poland and Spain, among other countries.
19:25 Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, on the other hand, said the demonstrations would
19:30 be useful to persuade the European Union to change its agricultural policies.
19:36 Greek discontent is partially fueled by anger at the slow pace of reconstruction after devastating
19:41 floods in September in Thessaly, the center of Greek agricultural production.
19:47 Farmers want import controls, lower fuel taxes, better prices for products and an easing of
19:53 European Union environmental regulations.
19:59 In Spain, the 31st Criminal Court of Madrid decreed the acquittal of José Manzaneda,
20:04 coordinator of the digital media Cuba Información, and of Euskadi Cuba.
20:09 The sentence comes four days after a public hearing in Madrid in which Manzaneda and Euskadi
20:15 Cuba were accused by the president of the association Prisoners Defenders, Javier Larondo,
20:21 considered a detractor of the Cuban government.
20:24 The court in Madrid also ordered the head of the Prisoners Defenders to pay part of
20:29 the cost for his recklessness and bad faith, by maintaining that the accusation lacked
20:34 grounds.
20:36 In a settlement, the defense attorney recalled that the private prosecution was asking for
20:40 six years in prison and a fine of 8,400 euros for the journalist.
20:47 The criticisms of the so-called "anti-Castro" focused on the medical collaboration that
20:53 the Cuban government carries out in several countries of the world.
21:00 In Albania, opposition demonstrators protested violently outside the government building
21:05 to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
21:09 Several protesters were arrested after some threw incendiary devices at a police cordon.
21:15 The protest and tyranny was organized by the Democratic Party of former Prime Minister
21:20 Salih Berisha, who is currently serving a sentence of house arrest for corruption offenses.
21:26 The protest was called on an anniversary of the fall of the communist government of M.
21:31 Berhoca on February 20, 1991.
21:39 And the European Union extended for another year the unilateral sanctions applied by the
21:44 bloc against Russia.
21:46 Brussels renewed the 12 rounds of sanctions against Russia, which have been in place since
21:52 February 2022, after the start of the special military operation.
21:57 It also confirmed that it is studying the possibility of applying new sanctions against
22:02 Moscow.
22:03 The unilateral measures affect a range of sectors of the Russian economy and include
22:07 trade embargoes, trouble bans and sanctions against Russian businessmen and officials.
22:13 Despite the sanctions, in early February, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced
22:17 that the country's economy would grow by up to 3.6%.
22:26 And like this we have come to the end of this news brief.
