00:00 Nightly greetings one and all. William Theo here, homegrown and happy to bring you PTV News Now.
00:07 They came with their families and loved ones to see their commander-in-chief elevate them to a higher rank
00:13 and a new star across their nameplates and epaulettes.
00:17 The 40 newly minted and higher-ranked generals of the country's armed forces,
00:22 the latest twinkler to their names, the culmination of hard work,
00:26 exemplary leadership in putting the AFP moving forward among the select few
00:31 of the most professional organizations in government.
00:34 In his speech, the commander-in-chief extolled the professionalism and virtues
00:39 of his new set of higher-ranked generals and cited their new challenge as radiated from within
00:45 to threats to national from outside.
00:48 He pointed out how he, the bureaucracy and the public from here on,
00:52 will expect more from his new generals and officers in setting the lead as the guardians of a growing democracy
00:59 and flesh out the virtues of integrity, discipline, courage and patriotism.
01:05 The latest batch of newly promoted officers of the military consists of 14 brigadier and 10 major,
01:11 also from the arm from the Philippine Navy, a lieutenant, 4 major generals and 4 brigadier from the Air Force,
01:19 1 three-star general, 2 major generals and 3 brigadier generals or commodores.
01:25 He's the undisputed pioneer of low-budget independent movies
01:31 who almost always got his pictures in the can on schedule.
01:36 Roger Tormann died in his Santa Monica home over the weekend at the age of 98.
01:42 An icon of independent filmmaking who mentored and gave some of the biggest names
01:48 in Hollywood their big breaks early in their careers,
01:51 such as Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, James Cameron and Ron Howard.
01:58 Likewise, he hired actors like A-lister Jack Nicholson, Robert De Niro, Peter Fonda and Ellen Verstine
02:06 as they tried to make a name for themselves on the silver screen.
02:10 Indeed, Corman had a remarkable eye for talent in his budding stages.
02:15 As the king of cult and B-films, Corman once said he had made over 100 movies
02:20 and never lost a dime on any one of them.
02:24 Meanwhile, wanting to seize on the moment and sway Jewish voters over the issue
02:31 and conflate it with the universally despised rebel group of Hamas,
02:35 Republicans hit on US President Joe Biden's latest directive
02:39 to withhold certain offensive rail to Malacca and plan to evacuate Palestinian civilians safely.
02:50 VOA's Veronica Balderas Iglesias has more.
02:53 It was a somber Sunday in Israel as it marked Memorial Day for its fallen soldiers and victims of terror.
03:03 Across the border, displaced Palestinians heeded evacuation orders
03:09 ahead of Israel's planned expansion of its military operations against Hamas in Rafah, the southern city in Gaza.
03:17 What is happening on the other side of the world is also strongly resonating on the campaign trail in the United States.
03:25 Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump brought up the Israel-Hamas war
03:30 when addressing a crowd of almost 100,000 of his supporters Saturday in Wildwood, New Jersey.
03:37 There would have been no war in Gaza with me in the White House.
03:41 When I was president, we had peace in the Middle East like never before.
03:45 Trump and other Republicans have strongly decried the Biden administration's recent decision
03:50 to pause certain bomb shipments to Israel in the context of unfolding events in Rafah.
03:58 Republican Senator Lindsey Graham framed his criticism Sunday in the context of World War II.
04:05 When we were faced with destruction as a nation after Pearl Harbor, fighting the Germans and the Japanese,
04:11 we decided to end the war by bombing Hiroshima and Nagasaki with nuclear weapons.
04:17 That was the right decision.
04:19 Give Israel the bombs they need to end the war they can't afford to lose and work with them to minimize casualties.
04:26 But even as some weapons shipments have been paused,
04:30 a recent State Department report to Congress failed to conclude that Israel has violated U.S.
04:37 and international law when using military assistance during its war against Hamas.
04:43 Secretary of State Antony Blinken was asked on NBC whether the U.S. is avoiding holding its ally accountable.
04:52 No, we don't have double standards. We treat Israel, one of our closest allies and partners,
04:58 just as we would treat any other country.
05:00 And when we can reach definitive conclusions, we will.
05:02 But it's very difficult to do that in the midst of a war.
05:05 Progressive independent Senator Bernie Sanders,
05:08 who aligns with Democratic opposition to Israel's conduct of the war,
05:13 told NBC that in his view, Israel should not be receiving another nickel in U.S. military aid.
05:21 35,000 Palestinians dead and 77,000 wounded, two-thirds of whom are women and children.
05:28 That is not the way you conduct a war in a civilized society to the degree that war is civilized.
05:34 It is expected that Joe Biden, who has so far been able to strike a balance between his re-election bid
05:40 and his official duties as president, will face new challenges this coming week
05:46 by congressional Republicans over the pause of some military transfers to Israel.
05:52 Donald Trump, meanwhile, will return to the courtroom on Monday
05:56 and face his former fixer Michael Cohen, as Cohen testifies in Trump's New York hush money trial.
06:05 Veronica Valderas Iglesias, VOA News, Washington.
