00:00:00Look up! See your ceiling fan? Okay, if you don't have a ceiling fan, just go with it
00:00:05and imagine you do. Well, it has a hidden feature that you probably don't know. It
00:00:11might be a switch on the fan itself or a button on the remote, but most fans have the ability
00:00:17to change directions. And there's a reason you really want it to. In winter, you want
00:00:22it to spin clockwise, which pushes all the hot air from the ceiling down. In the summer,
00:00:29you want to spin it counter-clockwise to pull the cool air that pulls around the floor
00:00:33up to circulate around the room.
00:00:36This next one's a huge deal. Your microwave probably has a silent mode. Yeah, that's
00:00:42right, all your 3 a.m. burritos that you heated up with your finger hovering over the stop
00:00:47button to hit it one second before the timer went off could have actually been a lot less
00:00:52stressful. It depends on the mode, but by either pressing or holding the 0 or 1 button,
00:00:58you should be able to activate the silent mode. Now, you can microwave to your heart's
00:01:03content anytime.
00:01:06Those springy doorstops at your baseboards that make the boing sound aren't just doorstops.
00:01:11They're also door holders. By holding them down and opening the door over them, the spring
00:01:17latches onto the bottom of the door and locks it open. Yeah, we all missed that one!
00:01:23Did you know you've probably been putting on your running shoes wrong? See, there's
00:01:28a small hole at the top where the laces end that's called a heel lock. Can you guess
00:01:33what it does? Yeah, it locks your heels! That way, they don't slip around and give you
00:01:38a blister or slide your sock down. Which is just the worst feeling, isn't it? So what
00:01:44you're supposed to do is loop each lace into its heel lock hole, which creates a small
00:01:49loop. The opposite lace then goes through that loop. Tie your laces tight, just like
00:01:54you normally would, and whoa, your heels are secure!
00:01:59Speaking of shoelaces, if you accidentally knot them so well that even you, with your
00:02:04incredible muscles, can't undo them, there's a common baking ingredient that has a hidden
00:02:09feature that can help. Yep, you heard me right, a baking ingredient!
00:02:15Cornstarch can make your gravy thicker, or it can untie stuck knots. It's so talented!
00:02:21Just sprinkle it on any knot, coating it completely, and it will slide free easily. It works on
00:02:27necklaces, ropes, yarn, etc. It doesn't work on knots in your muscles, though, unfortunately.
00:02:33But hey, you can always give it a try!
00:02:36Uh-oh, did you put on your friend's ring without thinking how much smaller their hands
00:02:41are than yours? And now it's stuck! Just grab a bottle of Windex, my friend! Yep, Windex
00:02:48cleans your windows, of course, but it also has a neat little secret talent at removing
00:02:53stuck rings. A little spritz, and that bling will slide right off. Cool, huh? Why has no
00:02:59one ever taught us that?
00:03:01Let's say you're writing something in pencil, like an exam, but whoops, you forgot your
00:03:07Strangely, you didn't forget to bring your bread to the test. So you've got that, which
00:03:13is all you need to clear up that mistaken answer you just wrote down. Roll the bread
00:03:18up tightly until it has a texture best described as, well, eraser-like. Then go at it, erasing
00:03:25like you normally would. Why have the bread makers been hiding this from us? This could've
00:03:30been useful in so many situations when I brought bread to my school exams.
00:03:36If you wear leather jackets, first off, you're cool. Second off, you're probably missing
00:03:41out on a hidden feature that's not so hidden and is actually in plain sight. The straps
00:03:47on the top of the shoulders of your jacket aren't just for decoration. If you unbutton
00:03:52them while you slide on the straps of your bag, you can clip them shut again over your
00:03:57bag straps, locking them in place. No matter how many jumping jacks or cartwheels or break-dancing
00:04:03headspins you do, your bag is not going anywhere.
00:04:08When you need to wrap up some leftovers, tin foil is your friend. But it also has a place
00:04:13in the laundry room because of this secret use. Imagine you run out of dryer sheets.
00:04:19Your clothes come out of the dryer full of so much static that they make your hair stand
00:04:23up straight like a cartoon evil scientist's. Here's what you need to do. Crush up 2 sheets
00:04:29of tin foil into tight balls. Throw those clothes back in the dryer with the balls and
00:04:35give them another round. They'll come out static-free.
00:04:39After you make hard-boiled eggs, they're in hot water. Some would say boiling hot.
00:04:44So how do you get them out easily without reaching in? A whisk! Push it over the egg
00:04:51and it will pop into the wire cradle. Now you can pull it right out with ease and comfort.
00:04:58The colors of the clips on bread bags actually convey a secret meaning. They're showing
00:05:03you the day of the week that the loaf was packaged. Blue means Monday, brown means Tuesday,
00:05:08and white means Friday. Yeah, it's not just random colors. And most bread brands follow
00:05:14the same system because there's one company that supplies a lot of these clips. So when
00:05:20picking out the perfect loaf, you can gauge the freshness by the color.
00:05:26There's nothing better than a nice piece of buttered toast for breakfast, if we're
00:05:30not counting hot fudge sundaes. But if you find it harder to spread out cold butter over
00:05:35your toast, here's an idea. Use a cheese grater. Figure out the amount you need and
00:05:41grate the product. The process will also soften the butter, making it easier to spread, and
00:05:46you won't have to melt a too large amount of it in the process. But still, that hot
00:05:51fudge…
00:05:53Bread pasta comes in all sorts of different shapes and sizes for a reason. That's because
00:05:58each type of pasta goes best with a particular sauce. Pasta shells, for example, are perfect
00:06:04with denser and chunkier sauces. Why? Because the sauce gets inside the shells, making it
00:06:10easier to serve and eat the dish. The ribbed outer surface also helps with covering the
00:06:15shells in the sauce.
00:06:18If you ever end up burning your cookies, you can save them with your trusty grater too.
00:06:24Just grate off the blackened parts after carefully taking the cookies from the baking tray. But
00:06:29be careful and wait until the cookies have cooled down. Also, if you ruin their shape
00:06:34a bit, you can always dip them in some melted chocolate. After the chocolate cools down,
00:06:40you'll have perfectly shaped cookies. Although, after it gets past your lips and beyond, does
00:06:46the shape of the cookie actually matter? Just sayin'.
00:06:51If you like adding a lot of ingredients to your sandwiches but don't really appreciate
00:06:55it when the bread gets soggy, there is a way to reduce the amount of moisture. Pick your
00:07:00sliced tomatoes or cucumbers and place them between two paper towels for up to 5 minutes.
00:07:06After that, you can use them. Also, make sure to spread butter, cheese, or sauces like mayo
00:07:12or ketchup onto the bread first. This will help you seal the bread and keep moisture
00:07:17at bay.
00:07:20Some people think that the little white string that you find near an egg yolk needs to be
00:07:24removed before you cook the egg. Well, I'm here to tell you that these strands are called
00:07:29chalaza and you don't actually need to get rid of them. They help keep the yolk in place
00:07:33at the egg's center. A chalaza is not going to mess up the consistency or the taste of
00:07:38your food, so removing it is completely up to you.
00:07:43Ever notice that most juice boxes come with two flaps, one on each side? Those are actually
00:07:49handles. Manufacturers design the boxes this way to make it easier for us to hold them.
00:07:54This way, we don't end up squeezing the box, making the juice spill out.
00:08:00Now you don't need to be a baking pro to know that you can use both white and brown
00:08:05sugar in your recipes. But have you ever wondered what the difference between these
00:08:09two is? It turns out that the only thing that sets them apart is that, during production,
00:08:15a small amount of molasses is added to the brown sugar.
00:08:20Molasses is basically a sort of syrup you get when processing sugarcane. It's usually
00:08:24removed during the refining process. That's how white sugar is produced. But if some amount
00:08:30of molasses remains in the final product, we end up with brown sugar, with its specific
00:08:35taste and darker hue. It's a good thing.
00:08:40There are a lot of things you can put in your dishwasher, apart from your dishes. For example,
00:08:45you can clean such things as your silicone oven mitts or the knobs of some kitchen appliances
00:08:51like your oven or stove. Some kitchen sponges and reusable towels may be safe to clean in
00:08:57the dishwasher as well.
00:08:59Speaking of kitchen cleaning products, there are a lot of things you can do with dish soap.
00:09:04Like de-griming your patio furniture. Just add a bit of dish detergent to some warm water
00:09:09and use the solution to wipe down your outdoor furniture with a piece of cloth. Finally,
00:09:15rinse it clean using your garden hose.
00:09:18You can also use dish soap to get rid of greasy stains on your clothes. Be it pasta sauce
00:09:23or salad dressings. Hey, sometimes we miss our mouths! So, just apply a little dish detergent
00:09:29to the stain and then rinse with water. Use non-colored soap for lighter clothes. For
00:09:34more difficult stains, let the dish soap sink in for a bit, then throw the piece of clothing
00:09:39in the washer as usual. And think about maybe getting a bib.
00:09:44If none of the methods have helped you organize your closet, and you're still overwhelmed
00:09:48with large piles of clothes, there's a simple way that might be effective. It's called
00:09:53the one-in-one-out rule. That means, for every new piece of clothing you buy, you need to
00:09:59get rid of one you already have. That means you'll always be decluttering your space.
00:10:05To make it easier to find something in your closet, good luck! Keep your most-used items
00:10:10at eye level. This way, they'll be easier to find and pull out when you're in a hurry.
00:10:16Those items that you tend to use less often, like your evening clothes, for example, can
00:10:20stay on the shelves above or below your eye level.
00:10:25You can make good use of old spice tins. If you glue some powerful magnets to the inside
00:10:29of the tins, they can double as magnetic shelves. You can use them for all sorts of everyday
00:10:35items like kitchen pliers, ice cream scoops, or even cutlery. You can also place them on
00:10:41any metallic surface, like your refrigerator door. They'll blend in nicely with your kitchen
00:10:47magnets.
00:10:48Hidden in your laundry room, there's a great tool for picking up pet hair. It sometimes
00:10:53works better than lint rollers. Take a dryer sheet and, using some elbow grease, you'll
00:10:59get rid of that dog or cat hair in no time. It works on all sorts of surfaces, but it's
00:11:04especially effective for upholstered furniture.
00:11:08If you don't like it when a door starts squeaking whenever you enter a room, get a
00:11:13bar of soap and rub it straight on the hinges. This will only help for a while, though, but
00:11:18it'll do the trick until you manage to get to a hardware store. And, you know, buy some
00:11:23oil.
00:11:25Have you ever noticed that in some elevators, there's a star next to the number of a specific
00:11:30floor? No, it's not to indicate where my office is. It's there to point out where
00:11:35the nearest exit is. And it's not always on the first floor. It's most likely located
00:11:40on the floor closest to the street.
00:11:44Have you ever wondered why stop signs are red? Well, back in the day, they didn't actually
00:11:49have any particular color at all. Before the 1920s, they didn't even have a standardized
00:11:55shade. In 1922, though, someone came up with the octagon. But initially, it was painted
00:12:01yellow. All because the red coloring tended to fade out too quickly because of sun exposure.
00:12:07So yellow turned out to be the best option.
00:12:10It took another 30 years for fade-resistant enamel paint to be invented. We ended up changing
00:12:16the color of the stop sign back to red. After all, it's still the best color if you want
00:12:21something to be easily noticeable.
00:12:24Do you know there's a type of rose that can grow taller than people? According to the
00:12:29Guinness Book of World Records, the tallest rose bush ever found grew in Vienna, Austria.
00:12:35It was a staggering 28 and a half feet tall. Yes, it arose to a great height.
00:12:42In the same way we all have unique patterns on our fingerprints, no two tigers have the
00:12:46same set of stripes. It makes it easier for people working with this feline species to
00:12:51distinguish one tiger from another.
00:12:54I'll bet you didn't know the White House has its own flower shop hidden in the basement
00:12:59of the building. It's supposed to provide flower arrangements for all sorts of events
00:13:03that take place there.
00:13:06It's probably no surprise that pizza has become an American staple dish despite its
00:13:11Italian origin. People in the US love it so much that they buy 350 slices of pizza every
00:13:18second in the States. Man, I'm not getting my fair share.
00:13:23To manage the huge demand for this delicious dish, around 17% of all restaurants in the
00:13:28US are pizzerias.
00:13:30Finally, there's a way to make lemon juice without the seeds getting into your beverage.
00:13:36Try cutting the fruit in two and squeezing it with a pair of kitchen tongs. The pointed
00:13:41end of the lemon should be facing down. The juice will flow down, but the seeds will remain
00:13:47inside the lemon. Ooh, lemony! It goes well with pizza.
00:13:54Next time you're getting ready for work, take a closer look at your go-to shirt. Every
00:13:59buttonhole is stitched vertically, but check out the very last hole – it's stitched
00:14:04horizontally, right? This is because the bottom part of your shirt endures the most stress
00:14:08from pulling, as it's where your hips are. So that horizontal buttonhole isn't a mistake
00:14:14– it's put there to stop your shirt ripping as your hips move.
00:14:18That layer of bubbles that forms when you add bubble bath to your tub isn't just for
00:14:22fun. The bubbly layer also acts as insulation and keeps your bath warmer for longer.
00:14:28The pom-pom on top of your beanie wasn't put there as a fashion accessory. The pom-pom
00:14:33was originally added to the hat to prevent sailors banging their heads on the ceilings
00:14:38of the ships that were too low. Crackers have holes in them to stop them cracking and breaking
00:14:43during baking. If the holes weren't there, steam would build up inside the cracker and
00:14:48make it collapse.
00:14:50Those numbers on stickers they put on oranges aren't random. If there are 4 digits, and
00:14:55the first is 3 or 4, this means the fruit has been made with conventional farming techniques.
00:15:015 numbers beginning with an 8 means the fruit has been genetically modified. 5 numbers beginning
00:15:07with a 9 means the fruit is organic.
00:15:11Margins on paper aren't for writing in dates and numbering lists. They were originally
00:15:15added to serve a protective function. Back in the day, rats used to be a pesky problem
00:15:20in people's homes, and paper was one of their favorite snacks. Margins were added
00:15:25as a safeguard so that the rats would nibble on blank paper rather than taking a bite out
00:15:30of your important work.
00:15:32If you put your Chinese takeout on a plate when it arrives, you're doing more work
00:15:36than you should. Much like the paper condiment pots in fast food restaurants, your cardboard
00:15:42Chinese takeout box can be unfolded to create the perfect size plate for your food.
00:15:48The long neck on your soda bottle is designed like that to encourage you to hold it there.
00:15:53That way, the heat from your hand will only warm that top bit of the bottle instead of
00:15:57heating up your whole drink.
00:16:01Why does a lapel have a buttonhole with no matching button? Originally, coats and jackets
00:16:06did have a corresponding button so that the wearer could turn up the collar and fasten
00:16:10it around the neck to keep warm. Over time, people stopped doing this, and the button
00:16:15was removed, but many suitmakers still keep the non-functioning traditional buttonhole.
00:16:20It's always hard to see your food in the microwave because of that pesky black grate
00:16:25on the window, but it's there to stop harmful microwaves escaping. Called the Faraday shield,
00:16:31it protects you as well as ensures that your food cooks properly.
00:16:36That random diamond on your backpack is called a lash tab or pig snout. It's there so
00:16:41you can thread cords through the holes to carry extra gear – perfect for camping or
00:16:46long hikes.
00:16:48Golf balls are covered in dimples, rather than being perfectly round, so that the ball
00:16:52can fly through the air more smoothly, decreasing the drag and allowing it to travel further
00:16:57and faster.
00:16:59Your makeup pads have two different sides for a reason. The bumpy side is used for applying
00:17:03makeup, while the flat side is for removing it.
00:17:08Donuts have holes so that the inside and outside cook evenly. Before the holes were added,
00:17:13the inside would often be greasy and doughy, while the outside was crisp.
00:17:18Your Apple laptop charger has tiny legs that can be folded out, and they're not there
00:17:23so your charger can stand up. These legs, when unfolded, allow you to wrap the cable
00:17:28around and then clamp it into place, securing it and preventing the cable getting tangled
00:17:33or damaged.
00:17:35Take a look at a soda bottle, and you'll notice a disc inside the bottle cap. This
00:17:39helps seal in the liquid and the drink's fizz, stopping it from going flat.
00:17:45That hole in your hollow lollipop stick isn't to prevent choking, should it ever be swallowed.
00:17:50It's actually there to keep the candy in place. Excess candy flows into the hollow
00:17:55tube, and the hole, which, when it hardens, keeps the pop in place. If it was a smooth
00:18:00stick, the candy would slide off easily.
00:18:04The zipper on leather biker jackets is often sewn diagonally. It's not just a fashion
00:18:09statement. Zips that are stitched vertically can bunch up if the wearer leans forward,
00:18:14but a diagonal zipper won't. That little triangle on your gas gauge is there to let
00:18:19you know which side of the car your gas cap is on. Now you'll never pull up to the wrong
00:18:24side of the pump in a rental car again!
00:18:28Vacuums come with so many attachments, but do any of us really know what that one with
00:18:33long bristles is for? It's for dusting, and it's perfect for cleaning framed art,
00:18:38blinds, and lampshades. Those tiny holes in the chocolate box tray actually serve a function.
00:18:45Push the hole near the candy, and it'll pop straight out with you having to get your
00:18:48hands dirty. How thoughtful!
00:18:51Some skyscrapers have hollow floors that can contain nothing but an elevator. It's actually
00:18:56a way to get around height limits. Some skyscrapers are given a limit to the number of floors
00:19:01they can have. Because the hollow floors are empty, they add to the height of the building
00:19:06and make it look more impressive without increasing the number of floors and breaking the building
00:19:10contract. These hollow floors also help to prevent the spread of fires.
00:19:16Women's shirt buttons are traditionally on the left for a reason. Back in the day,
00:19:21it was a sign of wealth, as it signified that a chambermaid had dressed you, as having the
00:19:26buttons on the left made it easier for them to do up the shirt.
00:19:31Their cuticles serve a purpose, so think before you get rid of them. The small area
00:19:35of skin is there to protect your nails from infection. Without it, bacteria and fungi
00:19:40can get in.
00:19:41What's the difference between a wooden hanger and a plastic one? Aside from helping keep
00:19:47your clothes in shape, cedar wood hangers also repel moths and bugs.
00:19:53If you look closely at an elevator door, you'll notice a tiny hole. This is actually a key
00:19:58hole used for emergencies or for routine maintenance checks. Those random buttons dotted across
00:20:05your jeans are called rivets and are placed in the weakest spots of the jeans to protect
00:20:09them from ripping due to strain or movement.
00:20:13The Statue of Liberty's crown has seven points for a reason. They represent the seven
00:20:18seas and seven continents and were added so that she could extend her freedom to everyone
00:20:23on Earth.
00:20:26Hangers often come with two zippers so that you can connect them with a padlock to prevent
00:20:30theft.
00:20:31Salt isn't just used for cooking. It can get rid of tough smells. Rubbing salt on your
00:20:36fingertips after chopping garlic should remove the smell. It also works on shoes.
00:20:42If you're in a hurry to get somewhere, but your phone is low on charge, switch it to
00:20:46airplane mode while it's plugged in. It'll charge much faster.
00:20:52Women's shirts have a loop on the back so that they can be hung on a hook in a dressing
00:20:55room or a locker room without creasing.
00:20:59Vaseline has a hidden purpose. It's great for removing scuffs from patent leather shoes.
00:21:04It'll also shine them.
00:21:06Trunks have an emergency latch if you ever accidentally lock yourself in, like I do.
00:21:11Don't ask me why. If you fumble around to locate it, all you have to do is pull on it
00:21:16and the trunk should open.
00:21:19Coasters have a secret slide in the bottom that can be removed so you can clean out all
00:21:24those annoying breadcrumbs.
00:21:26Take a look at your laptop keyboard. There are bumps on the F and J keys, but nowhere
00:21:31else. When your fingers are in the optimal typing position, your index fingers should
00:21:36rest on these two keys. The bumps have been added so that you can correctly position your
00:21:40hands for typing without looking at your keyboard.
00:21:44If you happen to be missing your index fingers, perhaps from feeding sharks a little too closely,
00:21:49then you're out of luck.
00:21:53Have you ever wondered what these extra holes at the top of your running shoes are for?
00:21:58They're designed so that you can tie the shoes in multiple different ways. That's useful
00:22:03when you want to compensate for things such as a bad stride or even a damaged toe.
00:22:08Plus, you can change the look of your shoes the way you prefer.
00:22:15Many people use a dust jacket of their book as a bookmarker. No problem with that, it
00:22:20will save your book from bent page corners. But the primary purpose of a dust cover is
00:22:25to keep the book safe from distortions. For instance, if you spill juice or drop some
00:22:30of the food on your book while reading it.
00:22:34The Tic Tac dispenser has this little groove on its top, so you can dispense only one Tic
00:22:39Tac at a time. Even though, let's be honest here, nobody does that. Most of us just fill
00:22:44a whole bunch at once and then we wiggle all those extra Tic Tacs back in.
00:22:51Those rubber bumps you see between the tire treads are there for your safety. The raised
00:22:55edges tell you what the minimum height of your tread is. If the bump and the edges are
00:23:00even, it's time for you to visit the tire shop as soon as possible. But if the bumps
00:23:06are well beneath the level of the edges, you're good to go.
00:23:11What about that black grating on the microwave window? It's something called a Faraday shield.
00:23:17And it's there to prevent microwaves from getting away and turning the entire room into
00:23:21a Faraday cage. If the microwaves escape, your meal won't cook properly either. So
00:23:26yep, the cage is not there to make it difficult for you to see your meal while it's cooking.
00:23:31It's keeping the electromagnetic energy inside.
00:23:36How about a wrench compatible screwdriver? Cover your screwdriver with the end of your
00:23:41wrench and you can increase its torque. That's why the head of your screwdriver is designed
00:23:45the way it is. When you have odd angles, you can use this strategy.
00:23:52You've probably heard those myths, the blue side of the eraser can erase the pen. False.
00:23:57Its purpose is to erase a pencil. But in case you're writing something on heavier paper.
00:24:03The blue side can remove smudges you see after using the pink eraser too.
00:24:09Have you ever wondered why oranges in supermarkets mostly come in the red mesh bag? It's a trick
00:24:15to make this food look more orange and encourage you to make a purchase. An extra tip, don't
00:24:20throw away the mesh bag. Tie it up so you can have a small pot scrubber to clean your
00:24:25sink, kitchen, appliances and dishes.
00:24:31You can see golf balls don't have a perfectly round shape. Their surface is covered with
00:24:35many little dimples, something golf balls didn't always have. At one point, experienced
00:24:40golfers started noticing how through time, older balls with imperfections, such as nicks
00:24:46and bumps, could travel further. Such things create turbulence in the air around the golf
00:24:53ball, which eventually reduces drag. So, manufacturers started producing balls with dimples so they
00:25:00could go farther and faster.
00:25:04You might have noticed that sometimes there are ridges in toothpick tops. It's more hygienic
00:25:08because when you break that off, you can prop the toothpick up on it, and it won't touch
00:25:13anything.
00:25:16Another safety feature you'll find, this time in your car, is a tab on your rear-view mirror.
00:25:22With it, you can change the position of the mirror so you don't get blinded if there's
00:25:26a car behind you with its high beams on. So this little tab helps you control the glare
00:25:31of lights coming from behind. This feature showed up in the 1930s, but in the early 1970s,
00:25:38it became a part of standard equipment in most trucks and cars.
00:25:43Do you see that tiny hole on your iPhone right next to the rear-facing camera? It's a microphone,
00:25:49and it's there so your phone can record sound as you turn your camera around.
00:25:56Some cables have a thick cylinder towards the end of the cord. It's called a ferrite
00:26:00core, or a choke. It's a magnetic iron oxide that stops high-frequency electromagnetic
00:26:06interference. For example, you know that annoying static noise you get if you bring your phone
00:26:12too close to a speaker? This interrupts your call, which is why cable cords with big cylinders
00:26:18are pretty useful, because they prevent these things.
00:26:23Do you know why nearly all luggage bags and backpacks have two zippers? It's way more
00:26:28convenient and easier to open in that way. But not just that, you can also lock these
00:26:33two zippers together to keep the stuff inside your bags safer.
00:26:39You know how toilets at public spots like malls have those big gaps at the bottom? It's
00:26:44primarily for better circulation of air. This type of door also makes it easier to clean
00:26:49the toilet or check if it's occupied if you're standing in line. Other than that, if you
00:26:55get stuck there and the lock gets broken, you still have a way to escape. You can just
00:27:00crawl out.
00:27:03Ever notice those plastic end caps on utility knives? And they also have scales on them,
00:27:09which indicates you may use them multiple times but with sharp edges. You can separate
00:27:15the blades through these plastic end caps. Then you can move the slider and bring the
00:27:20sharp blade to the front.
00:27:23If you've ever taken a moment to examine a regular grocery cart, especially their fold-out
00:27:28section, you probably noticed those metal loops jutting out. They're designed to protect
00:27:33the items you carry in your cart. You can use them to hang bags with soft items. You
00:27:40don't want to accidentally squish with heavier products, like bread, or easily breakable
00:27:44things like eggs.
00:27:48Many coffee mugs come with curved notches on their bottom. When you're washing your
00:27:52mugs, put them against the rack at an angle in your dishwasher. This way, the water won't
00:27:57pool in there, so your favorite cup will be completely dry by the time you take it out
00:28:01of the dishwasher.
00:28:04If you're a McFlurry fan, you've probably noticed there's a square hole in the handle
00:28:09of the spoon. It's there so you can attach it to the special machine that mixes the ice
00:28:13cream and your favorite toppings together. The machine has a bar that slips into this
00:28:19square-shaped spoon and then thoroughly stirs it. And you get the spoon so they can minimize
00:28:24the mess during the process. Quite neat, wouldn't you say?
00:28:30A regular milk jug has a dent on one side. Some might see it as a random design decision,
00:28:36but a dent has several purposes. One of them is to get bigger if there's a gas buildup.
00:28:42This happens when your milk is spoiled, so you don't even have to try to check this out.
00:28:48Also, the dent is there so the jug doesn't burst if you accidentally drop it. The dent
00:28:53allows the expansion space that deals with the sudden pressure that happens when you
00:28:57drop the jug.
00:29:00Dental floss. Sure, it's important for your dental health, and it's easy to assume what
00:29:05you do with it. But dental floss is great in the kitchen as well, because it's a very
00:29:10precise cake slicer, way better than a regular knife.
00:29:17Most kitchen shears have a serrated opening right there at the center where the blades
00:29:21and handles meet. It's something you can use to trim difficult herbs such as rosemary,
00:29:26thyme, or chives. Because of this opening, you don't need to pick the leaves off by hand,
00:29:32but de-stem them in one motion.
00:29:36The majority of gelatin containers or single-serving yogurts come with a tinfoil lid, and in most
00:29:42cases you can use this covering as a disposable spoon. Just peel away the covering and after
00:29:48a couple of simple folds, you'll have a perfect little spoon for your midday snack.
00:29:54If you look at it on the street, you'll think a fire hydrant is about three feet in height.
00:29:59But the actual size of the device used to provide water supply to firefighters all over
00:30:03the world is twice as large. That is, if you count the rest of the hydrant, which is
00:30:07hiding underground. They're mostly red, and it's not just a matter of urban design. First
00:30:12of all, they need to be of bright, easily noticeable colors so firefighters can spot
00:30:17them fast when they need to. The choice of color depends on how much water the hydrant
00:30:21can hold. It can sometimes vary depending on the location, but here's the breakdown.
00:30:26A red fire hydrant can splash 500 gallons of water per minute, while an orange one at
00:30:32least 1,000 gallons. Green ones mostly process 1,500 gallons of water per minute, and the
00:30:39most plentiful ones colored blue can generally contain over 1,500 gallons.
00:30:45Hey bowling fans, isn't it super annoying when your bowling ball gets cracked? Turns
00:30:49out that most of them get damaged because of incorrect storage or spikes in temperature.
00:30:56Now come on and face it, since it's already cracked a bit, aren't you curious what's
00:30:59actually inside the bowling ball? Cause I sure am. Let's have a look. They mostly make
00:31:04the inner core of the ball of powdered metal oxides, like calcium or iron oxide, then mix
00:31:10them with some resin and catalyst to harden the whole mixture. So that light bulb shape
00:31:14you now see inside of the ball is actually its heaviest part. It also influences how
00:31:19your bowling ball rotates when going down the lane. The same goes with spray paint cans.
00:31:25When you shake it, it makes a weird noise, but what is that thing in there? It's called
00:31:30a pea, and it's meant to hold the paint mixture in place and maintain its shape. They generally
00:31:35make it out of plastic, metal, or ceramic. It basically acts as a whisk to make sure
00:31:40your paint is well mixed together before you apply it to your surface of choice. Ever wondered
00:31:45how soda bottles keep that refreshing fizz for that long? Well, they have a little plastic
00:31:51ring fastened to the lid. They place it there to keep the gas from escaping and making the
00:31:55soda go flat, even if you shake it around in your bag the whole day. Speaking of things
00:32:02we use on a hot summer's day, wait, wait, don't put your baseball cap on just yet. Take
00:32:07a look at it for a minute and you'll notice there's a small button on the very top. Is
00:32:11it functional or is it just there for the sake of design? Way back when people started
00:32:15using fabrics to cover their heads, some say the button was actually functional. Since
00:32:20it's on top of the cap where the fabric panels come together, the top button helps keep the
00:32:25cap crown in one single piece. Now, with recent advances in fabric and pattern design,
00:32:31the button is more of an aesthetic feature. It's used to cover up the joint point of the
00:32:35fabric panels. Your cap might not have a button at all, but don't you think a cap actually
00:32:39looks better with one? Cotton pads have two sides, and if you take the time to look at
00:32:45them carefully, they're actually different in texture. Just in case you've ever wondered
00:32:49why, the textured side is for applying makeup and the even side is for removing it. Bookworms,
00:32:57this one is for you. Dust jackets that come with a lot of hardcover books are not just
00:33:01meant to make your book look pretty. They also double as a bookmark. Just fold the pages
00:33:06you've already read underneath the inside of the jacket, and voila! Next time you reach
00:33:11out for your favorite shirt, take a look at the top buttonhole. It should be stitched
00:33:15horizontally, and all the other ones are vertical. Turns out that the dress shirt was
00:33:20designed this way since the first and the last buttons were the first ones to unbutton
00:33:25throughout the day. They then changed the direction of the buttonhole to ensure the
00:33:29shirt would stay nice and fitted before you're ready to take it off. These days, we have
00:33:35so many variations of this awesome dessert that it's hard to imagine we've ever lived
00:33:39without it. You can find different types of cookie dough ice cream or even chocolate chip
00:33:43cookie cake basically everywhere, but the famous cookie wasn't actually invented until
00:33:481930. The story goes that a woman named Ruth Graves Wakefield was preparing some chocolate
00:33:54cookies as she was waiting for some guests to arrive. She soon figured out she was out
00:33:58of baker's chocolate, a crucial ingredient for the classic cookies. To fix things up,
00:34:03she chopped up a block of semi-sweet chocolate, thinking it would eventually spread out evenly
00:34:08throughout the batter given the heat of the oven. Things didn't necessarily go as planned,
00:34:12but hey, it's great they didn't because this is how she invented this modern dessert we
00:34:16now can't get enough of. And speaking of popular snacks, the potato chip is even younger than
00:34:23the chocolate chip cookie. Well, at least historically. There are many stories trying
00:34:28to explain how it was invented. One of them goes like this. A chef named George Crum,
00:34:34based in New York, put the chips together in 1953. He decided to try a different cooking
00:34:39solution when one of his customers didn't have nice things to say about his french fries.
00:34:45He said they were too thick and kind of mushy. Then, Crum came up with potatoes that were
00:34:50thinly sliced and fried until brown. People absolutely loved the dish, and they welcomed
00:34:56the first ever batch of chips with open arms. Ice cream anyone? If the story is true, back
00:35:03in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair, one ice cream shop owner ran out of cups to serve
00:35:08his dish. So, he fashioned a waffle into the shape of a cone, and the rest was history.
00:35:13Okay, I'll admit it, chewing gum-like treats have been around since the ancient Greeks. So,
00:35:19this one isn't particularly a revolutionary discovery, but the actual gum we buy today
00:35:24wasn't there until the late 1800s. An American inventor named Thomas Adams wanted to mix
00:35:31together different chemicals to create rubber. He tried and failed for that matter to play with
00:35:36chicle for his experiment, but ended up fashioning this neat treat. They still use chicle to this day
00:35:41to produce most chewing gums. Back in the 1800s, there lived a man named Jean-Baptiste Jolly who
00:35:48worked in the fabric industry as a textile maker. How he came up with this next invention that we
00:35:53use a lot these days has less to do with him and more to do with his maid. The story goes that the
00:35:59woman accidentally knocked a kerosene lamp over onto a tablecloth instead of getting upset over
00:36:05the damaged fabric. Jolly noticed that the substance actually made the material cleaner.
00:36:10Figured it out yet? Yep, that's how the idea for the very first dry cleaner popped up. A very neat
00:36:16accident, if I do say so myself. Now this one I loved. Did you know matchsticks were initially
00:36:23called friction lights? Or at least that's how their inventor, a chemist named John Walker,
00:36:28called them back in 1826. He scraped a stick coated in chemicals across his hearth totally
00:36:35by accident one day and realized that they ignited and created a spark. Initially made
00:36:41out of cardboard, they were then made using wooden splints and sandpaper. Back in the 1940s,
00:36:48a man named Harry Coover stumbled upon a chemical formulation that seemed to stick to everything it
00:36:53touched. The scientific community at the time didn't look much into it as the formula didn't
00:36:58seem to have many applications back then. It wasn't until 1951 that he looked a bit more into
00:37:05the formula and decided to repurpose it. Along with a fellow Eastman Kodak researcher named Fred
00:37:10Joyner, they gave it a proper full name. But you must know it by the shorter version, superglue.
00:37:17It also has many uses in security these days that it's hard to believe that we didn't come
00:37:23up with this one on purpose. Back in 1903, a scientist named Edward Benedictus knocked over
00:37:30a flask by accident. He looked down and was amazed to see that the glassware had just slightly
00:37:35cracked but maintained its shape. He was expecting it to break into a million tiny pieces. Curious
00:37:41about this hidden feature, he looked into it and figured out what was keeping the glass together
00:37:46was a substance coating the inside of the glass. Ta-da! That's how humanity came up with safety
00:37:52glass. I bet that's not what you imagine when you think of cashews. But a Redditor found them
00:37:59like this in a store in Brazil. It turns out they're not true nuts. Cashews emerge at the tip
00:38:05of a cashew apple. There's a special word for a fruit with a seed inside, a droop. So cashews are
00:38:11droops, just like almonds and pistachios. Brazil is the homeland of cashews. The tree was brought
00:38:18to India by the Portuguese in the middle of the 16th century. And from there, it spread further
00:38:23to Asia and then to West Africa. Today, these regions are the largest producers of cashews. The
00:38:30biggest consumer is the USA. They get 90% of the world's harvest. Since we're talking about foods,
00:38:37I'll show you a couple more. This, for example, is how pineapples grow. Also, pineapples aren't one
00:38:44of those fruits that grow fast. They take from 16 up to 24 months to grow until they can be
00:38:49harvested. Also, one plant can only produce a maximum of three pineapples during its lifetime.
00:38:55Fun facts. Every segment of a pineapple used to be a flower. Have you ever wondered why eggplants
00:39:02are called eggplants? Well, you've probably never seen an eggplant growing. So here's a picture. Now
00:39:08it makes sense. They literally look like growing eggs. Also, eggplants aren't vegetables. Botanically,
00:39:14they're berries, just like watermelons. Also, eggplants aren't only purple. They can also be
00:39:20white, green, and even purple with white stripes. You'll never guess what it is. It looks like a
00:39:27flower bouquet. But it's broccoli that hasn't been harvested. Those flowers are actually edible.
00:39:33Broccoli has been known for at least 2,000 years. It was the favorite food of the ancient Romans.
00:39:38But it appeared in North America only in the 1920s. Italian immigrants were the ones to bring
00:39:45it to California and start selling it. Now, the USA is the third largest producer of broccoli,
00:39:51after China and India. And this is what an artichoke turns into if you let it bloom. So,
00:39:57an artichoke is actually an unbloomed flower. It's also one of the oldest foods humans know.
00:40:03Remember that a pineapple takes around two years to produce a fruit. And a plant can only carry
00:40:09three pineapples during its life, if you're lucky. An artichoke plant grows 20 artichokes per year.
00:40:15The artichoke is one of the healthiest vegetables when it comes to antioxidants. Here's a photo of
00:40:21a sleeping turtle. Many of them sleep inside their shells. It's an instinct to protect themselves
00:40:27from predators. Still, some turtles can't retract to their shells. So, they sleep in positions
00:40:32similar to this one. These animals are active during the day and sleep at night. The amount
00:40:38of sleep a turtle needs depends on the species. It can be from 10 hours to just one. On average,
00:40:43a turtle takes a four to six-hour-long nap. The most important factor for a turtle when it goes
00:40:48to sleep is to find a safe place. They can hide under leaves or in holes in the ground. Have you
00:40:55ever seen a chameleon's feet? You're welcome. So, those guys have two toes on the inner side of the
00:41:01foot and three on the outer side when we talk about front feet. And it's the opposite for the
00:41:06back feet. Chameleons live on trees, and their feet help them climb better. We all know about
00:41:12chameleons' unique ability to change colors. But they don't change them to camouflage. In reality,
00:41:18the color depends on the chameleon's mood, temperature, humidity, and light. Also, do you
00:41:24know that some of them have tongues that are twice as long as their body? Ever seen a goose
00:41:30mouth from up close? They have teeth. Only they're called beaks. Goose are very loyal creatures. It's
00:41:37not a myth that a duckling bonds with the first moving stimulus they see after hatching. No matter
00:41:42if it's a goose, a person, or even just an object, they will stay dedicated to that lucky creature
00:41:48or thing throughout their lives. Geese also mate for life, and they're very protective of their
00:41:53offspring. If they lose a loved one, they mourn them. Also, if a goose in a group gets sick or
00:41:58wounded, a couple of other geese will stay with it to protect and take care of it. This cute little
00:42:05buddy is a newborn alligator. But don't be tricked by its cute appearance. This little dude has
00:42:10around 60 teeth already. Also, it's not the DNA that determines the gender of an alligator. It's
00:42:16the temperature. If eggs were laid when it was hot, male alligators will hatch. If they stayed
00:42:22in colder temperatures, then there will be a bunch of females. After hatching, it takes an
00:42:27alligator 10 years to mature. Overall, alligators live around 35 years in the wild. Also, alligators
00:42:34can't live in salt water. Unlike crocodiles, they don't have special glands to excrete salt from
00:42:40their bodies. And this one is a newborn pigeon. I bet you've seen thousands of pigeons in your life,
00:42:47but probably never a newborn one. That's because newborn pigeons stay in the nest for around six
00:42:52weeks, which is longer than any other bird. By the time they're out, they almost look like grown-up
00:42:57pigeons, so no wonder you've never noticed the difference. Also, these guys are possibly the
00:43:03first birds domesticated by people. They are also experts in navigation. They can find their way
00:43:08back home from 1,300 miles afar. It's more than the distance between New York and Florida. It's
00:43:15believed that pigeons have an innate sense of direction. Back in ancient times, pigeons
00:43:20actually delivered mail. This is a cow's mouth. Those brushes are called conical papillae.
00:43:26They help a cow move food around in the mouth. Also, cows have a field of vision of 330 degrees,
00:43:32so there's little that can skip their attention. Remember that some turtles only need one hour of
00:43:37sleep a day? Cows sleep even less, around 30 minutes a day. And this time is divided into
00:43:43six to 10 short periods of deep sleep. These animals lie down for around 10 hours a day,
00:43:49but the rest of the time, they move around, covering quite long distances.
00:43:53And yeah, they also drink around 26 gallons of water a day.
00:43:58Can you guess what this is? It's sand, under 300 times magnification. Sand is rock broken
00:44:04into microbe pieces after eroding, after millions of years. Also, communities of microbes live on
00:44:10a single grain of sand. Things can get really small in this world. Even though there's a lot
00:44:15of it, sand is still a valuable material. Concrete is made out of it. And also, some countries,
00:44:21like the United Arab Emirates in Singapore, have shipped tons of sand to extend their territory
00:44:27by creating additional islands. Apparently, this is what sinuses look like. They're hollow spaces
00:44:34in your facial bones, behind the forehead, nose, cheekbones, and between the eyes. Those are very
00:44:40important since they produce mucus, which is a fluid in your nose that filtrates, warms,
00:44:45and moisturizes the air you breathe in. Sinuses also help you detect tastes. Without this ability,
00:44:51the food would be way less delicious. This is the inside of a bowling ball. You may notice
00:44:57that it isn't symmetrical inside, so the weight isn't distributed evenly. This allows the ball
00:45:02to make curves. By the way, do you know that bowling appeared 5,000 years ago in ancient Egypt?
00:45:08Yep, it's not a new sport, and it was popular all over the world. The rules and equipment were
00:45:14different everywhere, though. The first bowling lane was constructed only in the 19th century,
00:45:18in New York. This right here is a forgotten pack of cotton candy. Bottom line, don't forget about
00:45:25it. Otherwise, it'll shrink as if it never existed. Cotton candy is only made of two ingredients,
00:45:31colored sugar and air. So now we know that the only ingredient in the world that is, so far,
00:45:36free air. Also, a thread of cotton candy is actually thinner than a hair. By the way,
00:45:43December 7th is National Cotton Candy Day. Hope you celebrated. If not, mark this day in your
00:45:49calendars for the next year. With only two ingredients, this stuff has zero fat. Also,
00:45:54it was created by a candy maker and a dentist.
00:46:00Various types of cheese have holes for a reason. For example, Swiss cheese is made with special
00:46:06bacteria that produce carbon dioxide. As the CO2 is emitted, it blows like bubblegum,
00:46:13leaving tiny craters, also known as cheese eyes. Then the cheese is cooled down, but the holes stay
00:46:19in place. Over 40 billion Oreos are made every single year. It's the world's most popular
00:46:28manufactured cookie. The geometric design stamped onto these cookies has the Nabisco logo, the symbol
00:46:34of European quality, surrounding the word Oreo. William Tournier created the chocolate cookie
00:46:41design we see today back in 1952. If you use reusable bottles, you probably know that sometimes
00:46:50they smell. Even if you only use it for regular water, it still smells. But it's not the water
00:46:57that smells, it's the microorganisms in it. If you drink water from a bottle, the particles of
00:47:02your saliva and sweat stay in there. Those bacteria start to build up in the bottle,
00:47:07causing the smell. So, if you choose reusable bottles, make sure to wash them every day to
00:47:14prevent those bacteria from building up. After washing, let it dry completely before using it
00:47:19again. Not only are the jeans blue, but the police officers' uniforms as well. The first
00:47:28official police officers appeared in the 19th century in London. They were given a blue uniform
00:47:33to contrast with the red and white uniform that military workers had already been wearing. Two
00:47:39decades afterward, the police force was adopted in the USA, and they followed the patterns.
00:47:44The uniform is still blue nowadays because it proved to be a good color. It's not that visible
00:47:49in dark hours, and police officers can observe things and people staying unnoticed. Also,
00:47:56stains aren't that visible on dark material. And, well, everyone knows that police officers
00:48:01wear blue, and they're recognized it. So, why change that?
00:48:08Baby carrots are tiny, and unlike regular carrots, wet. Not unlike baby humans. Baby
00:48:14carrots aren't some special sort of carrot. They're actually made of regular carrots by
00:48:19cutting off the skin and outer layers and then polishing them to look that pretty. The problem
00:48:24is they can't retain moisture. A regular carrot retains some water inside because of the layers
00:48:30that lock it in. Once they're chopped out, baby carrots can dry out easily. So, they
00:48:35usually sell them in bags with some water inside. Jeans have metal rivets, and they're there from
00:48:44the very beginning. Jacob Davis, the man who made the first pair of jeans, added copper rivets to
00:48:49spots where pants are more likely to rip – flies and pockets – to make them stronger. Today,
00:48:55they have more of a decorative purpose, since they are distinctive and traditional for jeans.
00:49:01Another special thing about jeans is those tiny pockets they have that seemingly serve no purpose.
00:49:07Well, maybe it's true now. But years ago, when many cowboys were wearing jeans,
00:49:12the pocket was made specifically to keep a pocket watch there. Also, back then, a pair of jeans had
00:49:18just four pockets. That tiny pocket, the watch pocket, two big pockets in front, and just one
00:49:25pocket in the back. Car headrests are all about comfort, and detachable headrests are all about
00:49:32safety. If you pull the headrest out, you'll see two sturdy metal bars. If you ever get locked or
00:49:38trapped in a car, you can use the bars to smash the window and get out. Those little red spots
00:49:47after you crack an egg are nothing to be worried about. Tiny blood spots can be caused by a small
00:49:53rupture in a blood vessel of a hen as it was laying the egg. Eggs with these blood spots are
00:49:58safe to eat, but that spot can be removed if you want. It won't affect the taste of the egg.
00:50:07Hidden within the Toblerone logo of the mountain is the image of a bear standing on its hind legs,
00:50:13about to eat that yodeler over there. No, not really. This is because bears are a big
00:50:18part of Bern, one of the biggest cities in Switzerland, where the founder created the
00:50:22triangular chocolate tree. Toblerone is also a play on the founder's family name, Tobler,
00:50:28and the Italian word Torrone for honey and almond nougat.
00:50:35The space below a cup of noodles is there to protect the noodles during transport.
00:50:39This technique is called a middle suspension. Not only are they protected better in their
00:50:44styrofoam cup, but it also helps those noodles soften more evenly and quickly.
00:50:50Even though you might have noticed that the hole on the barrel of ballpoint pens
00:50:54has no purpose, it does. It's called a venting system, which helps the ink flow more smoothly.
00:51:00This way, an even amount of air pressure is created inside and outside the pen,
00:51:05allowing the ink to flow into the point easily.
00:51:09It's not an accident that soy sauce bottles have two spouts.
00:51:13The sauce is liquid, and it flows out of the bottle pretty quickly once you turn it over.
00:51:17Most Asian food lovers will admit they've spilled it at least once in a lifetime.
00:51:22That's why, nowadays, restaurants prefer serving soy sauce in special bottles that have two spouts.
00:51:29This design allows you to control when and how much sauce will come out.
00:51:33Just put your finger on one spout while you pour the sauce through another.
00:51:37If you press your finger tightly to the spout, the sauce will stop flowing,
00:51:41and if you remove your finger, it will flow again.
00:51:44And please do not remove your finger in a restaurant. It will freak everybody out.
00:51:50You've probably noticed that train and bus seats are covered in fabrics with weird patterns.
00:51:56Any idea why? They use these patterns to cover any germs and stains on the seat.
00:52:02The brighter the color and the more patterned it is,
00:52:05the harder it will be for a passenger to notice any stains and get grossed out.
00:52:09Also, the patterns are usually so ugly that no one even wants to look at them for long
00:52:14enough to spot any stains. So yeah, the pattern is there to make you look away,
00:52:19and if you look, to make it less noticeable. No bus will ever have plain white seats,
00:52:25that's a guarantee. The middle tab on soda cans can be flipped around.
00:52:31You can slip a straw in place so you don't have to hold it up your mouth.
00:52:35This stay-on tab replaced the pouring tab created in the early 60s. You remember those, don't you?
00:52:41Those could be quite sharp and easily discarded where they could be a menace for others.
00:52:46Now you can pop your straw straight into one.
00:52:48Also means you can produce some bubbles and make a mess like a 3-year-old.
00:52:54Sometimes when you purchase an article of clothing, you receive a plastic baggie
00:52:58with an extra button and a swatch of fabric. While the fabric is clearly used to patch holes,
00:53:04it can also be used to test the effects of various cleaners on certain surfaces.
00:53:09It's handy, too, to test wash cycles before using them to wash the whole garment.
00:53:16Escalators have those fluffy black brushes for a similar reason that some have yellow
00:53:21lines on their steps – to try and deter people from getting too close to dangerous places.
00:53:27People don't always take notice, and sometimes clothing can drape close to the point where the
00:53:32step meets the edge or skirt. The brush is a little barrier to help prevent this from happening.
00:53:38They can also catch bits of fluff and prevent other small things from falling down into the gaps.
00:53:45Those takeaway containers most associated with Chinese restaurants
00:53:49are designed to not only carry your food home, but to store it in the fridge.
00:53:53They double as a plate, as you can eat straight out of them and don't have to worry about dirty
00:53:58dishes. They were actually patented way back in 1894 to transport freshly-shucked oysters
00:54:05and were known as oyster pails. They were later adapted to use as leak-proof containers for food.
00:54:13Ever wondered why coins have those little ridges along the edge? It's a leftover from earlier times
00:54:18when they were worth more. Counterfeiters could easily file the edges off to sell as gold or
00:54:24silver coins to make some profit. The ridges were created so it was much easier to tell
00:54:29which of the coins had been altered. It's not needed today, but the coins still have that altered style.
00:54:37All crackers and some cookies have holes to make sure the final product has the right texture.
00:54:43These teeny tiny holes allow steam to escape, so your crackers and cookies won't snap. If it
00:54:49weren't for these holes, also known as dockers, steam would build up inside the treat, and the
00:54:54final result might have been scrumptious, but it would've been rather oddly shaped.
00:55:00Dogs like to walk in circles before snoozing because they inherited this behavior pattern
00:55:05from their ancestors. There were no special doggy beds back then, so most pooches would
00:55:10have to push down tall grass to make a sort of snoozing spot. Plus, as a bonus,
00:55:16those movements scared off all the critters lurking in the vegetation.
00:55:21Donuts are ring-shaped for a similar reason. If they hadn't had holes right in the center,
00:55:26the dough there would've always been undercooked. By the way, they're often associated with the
00:55:31police because, back in the 1950s, donut shops were among the only places open late. They were
00:55:38a perfect place for police officers to grab something to eat, and even deal with some
00:55:42paperwork during the night shift. Your jeans are blue on the outside and white on the inside
00:55:49because of a smart way to weave the fabric. The warp thread is dyed, while the weft thread has
00:55:55no color – it's just white. This way, manufacturers reduce the amount of dye
00:56:00needed for each piece of clothing, and they're still dying to make the jeans.
00:56:08Road and construction workers are usually dressed in orange because the bright orange hue is visible
00:56:14even in bad weather. It's the most effective color to attract attention and alert people.
00:56:19No wonder lots of safety jackets and traffic cones are orange as well. The stop sign has an
00:56:24eight-sided shape to help drivers recognize it easily, even if they see it from the back. And
00:56:29when the signs weren't reflective yet, the octagon shape prevented drivers from confusing the stop
00:56:34sign with any other at night. The rumble strips on the side of the road are placed there to alert
00:56:40drivers who doze off behind the wheel. When their tires move over these strips, the noise and
00:56:45vibration work like an alarm clock. There are magnetic locks on fuel hoses at gas stations.
00:56:52They come in handy if someone drives away with the gas nozzle still attached to their car.
00:56:56In this case, the lock detaches the hose automatically. Oh, that's embarrassing.
00:57:01Gasoline looks like a rainbow in a puddle because it can't mix with water.
00:57:05It forms a thin membrane over it. When light reflects from it and the water at the same time,
00:57:11you've got a rainbow. A triple handle on a jerry can is there to make it easier for two people to
00:57:17carry it and distribute fuel evenly. Gas cans often have a second hole that actually needs to
00:57:23be uncapped too before you pour the gas. The air passage will prevent it from pouring out,
00:57:28so no more fuel waste. Most gas cans have two holes with caps, a bigger and a smaller one.
00:57:36You're supposed to uncap the smaller hole before pouring gas inside the bigger one.
00:57:40It'll prevent the liquid from glugging and spilling all over your clothes and the ground.
00:57:45Another little thingy we often neglect is a point on an ointment cap.
00:57:49Most tubes are usually sealed with a plastic film or a foil, and opening it with your fingernails
00:57:54isn't the best idea. A point easily opens even the most safely sealed tube.
00:58:01You can use most screwdrivers together with a wrench to create more torque. Just place the
00:58:06wrench over the handle of the screwdriver. This way, you'll need to apply a lot less force than
00:58:11before. You'll also be able to get to hard-to-reach areas more easily. They install cameras in shops
00:58:19and hospitals to monitor everything. If something happens, you can call the police or rescuers.
00:58:25The camera really helps to solve a lot of problems. Why are there no cameras on planes?
00:58:31The crew keep order on the plane, but they won't be able to do anything if something serious
00:58:36happens. Besides, there's nowhere to run on the plane. During the flight, the cameras are useless,
00:58:42and after the flight, the words of the passengers work ideally instead of cameras.
00:58:47So, if cameras do no good, then why spend money on them?
00:58:51Water is great at cleaning stuff because it has triangular molecules.
00:58:55They're made of one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms. Um, H2O? Such molecules have slightly
00:59:02different charges on their opposite sides, pretty much like magnets. That's why water
00:59:06easily sticks to other molecules, including those that make up dirt. Lots of private houses have
00:59:12triangular-shaped roofs because this allows rain, snow, and fallen leaves to slide off the slope.
00:59:18If all this stuff piled up on top of your house, one day your roof would collapse.
00:59:24When a storm is coming, clouds seem to turn dark, but it's just an illusion. Thin clouds on a sunny
00:59:29day let the light through easily. They also scatter all the colors of the light spectrum.
00:59:35This makes us perceive the clouds as white, but the thicker the clouds are and the more
00:59:39water droplets they contain, the less light they let through and the darker they look.
00:59:45A good doorknob is the one made of brass, bronze, or some copper alloys. These metals have an
00:59:51anti-germ effect. Bacteria spread way slower on them. They also get rid of germs pretty fast,
00:59:58within a couple of hours. Nope, it doesn't mean you don't have to wash your hands.
01:00:03Diamonds have such symmetrical shape to show you their brilliance.
01:00:07Initially, the gems aren't so beautiful. They go through several stages of cutting
01:00:12and then become pieces of elegance. Most of these stones have a round shape with
01:00:16slightly pointed corners. Diamonds shine the brightest in this shape.
01:00:22Why are there two holes in the socket? The left hole is neutral, the right hole is not,
01:00:28and the gap underneath is ground. Electricity needs to flow through the chain. The current
01:00:34flows from the hot slot, passes through your phone charger, for example, and then goes through
01:00:39the neutral hole. Ever wondered what that small pocket on your jeans is for? People used to wear
01:00:44watches on chains. That small pocket was meant for it. Now, almost no one wears such a watch,
01:00:51but the pocket remains. You can still keep something small in there, like a ring.
01:00:56In London, there are some poles that look like street lamps, but there are no bulbs.
01:01:01Well, their official name is stink pipes, and they're a thing of the past now,
01:01:05but they used to come in handy back in the 19th century. These hollow poles would vent away the
01:01:11air and explosive gases with bad smells to prevent, shall we say, unwanted consequences.
01:01:18Most kitchen shears have metal plier-like teeth in the middle. Between the handle grips,
01:01:22they can help you crack nuts, crab shells, and other tough products. You can also open jars
01:01:28and bottles or remove herb stems with their help. Leather often looks dull to the eye
01:01:34because it's covered with itsy-bitsy scratches and scrapes. They scatter the light that hits
01:01:39the material. When you coat your shoes in a layer of wax, you fill these tiny crevices.
01:01:45The surface becomes smoother, and the rays of light bounce off it more evenly.
01:01:49That's why the leather looks shiny. Highlighters are filled with a special
01:01:54semi-transparent fluorescent ink that can glow in dim light. Yellow and light green
01:01:59hues are the most popular because they don't prevent you from seeing the text after black
01:02:04and white photocopying. Photocopiers perceive yellow and light green marks as very pale and
01:02:10don't print them. They make magnets shaped as a horseshoe because this increases the magnetic
01:02:15force. Colors matter, too. The blue part indicates the south pole, the red part the north pole.
01:02:22The two poles work simultaneously and increase the attraction force.
01:02:27The dime-sized holes in elevator doors is actually a keyhole. If the doors get stuck,
01:02:33an operator can open them manually thanks to this hole. They'll just insert a special key.
01:02:39The tiny hole in the airplane window is there to balance air pressure.
01:02:44The window has three layers. The outer pane is extremely sturdy. It can withstand air pressure
01:02:50differences during takeoff and landing. The inner pane, which is the closest to you,
01:02:55is made of cheaper materials. It prevents potential damage to the window. The hole itself
01:03:00is in the middle pane. It not only balances the pressure but also prevents the window from fogging.
01:03:07Escalator brushes are there for your safety. They don't allow you to come too close to the
01:03:11edge of the escalator. This way, your clothes won't end up between the steps.
01:03:17You see the sun as yellow or orange. Because the atmosphere of our planet scatters such colors as
01:03:22blue, green, and violet, this is also why the sun looks warmer at sunrise and sunset.
01:03:29Go shopping for some oranges, and I'm sure you'll get them in a red mesh bag.
01:03:34You'll rarely see them lying around without one of those. It's pure marketing, and that
01:03:38color isn't a random choice. When packed in a red mesh bag, oranges appear more orange,
01:03:44fresher, and more appealing to you. So, you're more likely to buy them, right?
01:03:49Lemons are usually sold in green mesh bags for a similar reason. If you pack them in red,
01:03:54they'll appear more orange. Green goes better with yellow and makes those lemons stand out.
01:04:00Mattress manufacturers make a limited number of different mattresses,
01:04:04and the only way to make them look different is to come up with a fancy stitching pattern.
01:04:09Two mattresses of two different companies might be the exact same quality, but cost differently.
01:04:15Most people will never know it and will decide that different patterns
01:04:18mean something in terms of quality. So, when shopping, don't mind the pattern at all.
01:04:24Almost all hotels have white bedsheets. They choose this color specifically to show how high
01:04:29their standards of cleanliness are. The whiter and brighter the sheets are, the more luxurious
01:04:34the hotel seems. It's much easier to see dirt and stains on white linen. It's like proof that
01:04:40you've checked into a clean room. Okay, I know it's kind of cold to the touch, especially on a
01:04:45freezing winter's day. But did you know that brass doorknobs actually serve a purpose apart from
01:04:50looking classy and shiny? Since it's a copper alloy, brass has antimicrobial properties.
01:04:55That means it can help get rid of harmful germs and bacteria, sometimes in up to two hours.
01:05:01In high-traffic areas, that's all the more useful. But since brass is much costlier than other metals
01:05:06like nickel and steel, you barely see these types of doorknobs anymore nowadays. Speaking of lovely
01:05:12multi-purpose items, most screwdrivers have a tiny little secret of their own. They can sometimes be
01:05:18slid through a wrench so that they can be used to create more torque when twisting, not to mention
01:05:23the uses when it comes to bolts in hard-to-reach places. There's a reason why buttons on women's
01:05:29shirts are for the left-handed, and it has nothing to do with fashion. This practice dates back to
01:05:34the times when chambermaids were helping ladies dress themselves, and it was easier for them to
01:05:39perform their job with this orientation. Having the buttons placed as such indicated a sign of wealth,
01:05:46so it's easy to imagine why the practice carried on, even though most people dress themselves
01:05:51nowadays. Next time you receive a package in your mail, take a look at your box cutter.
01:05:57If it features some diagonal lines on the blade, you're in for a little design perk.
01:06:01Turns out that these are blades that snap off. Continuously cutting cardboard can dull the sharp
01:06:06edge of the blade. To help prevent the need to buy a brand new box cutter, the top segment along the
01:06:12next line can be broken off to reach a new sharp edge. To do this, check out the small hole at the
01:06:18base of the tool, sometimes called the blade snapper. The people that first came up with this
01:06:23brilliant invention were engineers inspired by the way chocolate bars are segmented. Hold on a
01:06:29minute, don't throw away the cardboard package just yet. Most likely, you'll have some silica gel
01:06:33packets somewhere at the bottom of the box. Since this gel is basically a drawing tool, it gathers
01:06:39up the moisture out of its environment, so you can store these packets for further occasions.
01:06:44Whether you'll need to dry out your phone or some other electrical object, you can place them in a
01:06:48container next to the silica gel to reduce the damage. You don't have to be a mechanic to know
01:06:54when a standard car tire needs replacing, since they come equipped with a neat indicator. Take a
01:06:59closer look and you'll see that treads within the tire are a bunch of rubber notches. When the treads
01:07:05are evened out with the perpendicular bars, it's a sign you need to book an appointment with your
01:07:10local car service, since most likely the tires have lost most of their traction and may not be safe
01:07:16for driving any longer. The upper corners of a car windshield feature textured black dots melted
01:07:22into the glass edges. This neat add-on isn't there for design purposes. It's called Frit Glazing,
01:07:29which means that a special type of ceramic paint is added to the window for protecting its sealant
01:07:35from UV rays. It also conceals and creates a coarser surface for the adhesive used to set
01:07:41the window in place. Whenever you're up for a drive, check out if there's a small tab under
01:07:47your car's rear view mirror. Bet you didn't know it's there to help switch the mirror from daytime
01:07:53to nighttime views. It uses a prismatic glass technology to blur the reflection and reduce the
01:07:59glare of headlights behind you in traffic. People came up with these manually tilted mirrors in the
01:08:051930s, but they became standard somewhere in the 1970s. While you're in the car, check out the
01:08:12headrests, as you most likely don't know that they carry a little disguised purpose. Of course,
01:08:17they're adjustable to accommodate passengers of any height so that they get the proper support for
01:08:22their heads and necks. The hidden feature is that they are detachable and come with two very solid
01:08:27metal bars. Should you ever find yourself stuck in a car and need to make a fast getaway, these bars
01:08:34come in handy to crack out the car windows. So you're out for a drive and you're suddenly out of
01:08:40gas. What I'm about to describe sounds more like a meme than an actual situation bound to happen.
01:08:45But what if you're in such a hurry that you accidentally drive off with the gas nozzle still
01:08:50in the tank? Well, the nozzles have been designed to prevent any hazards from happening, rest assured.
01:08:57They feature a breakaway device that will allow the hose to separate when taken out with enough
01:09:02force. Initially designed in the early 20th century to be worn exclusively by basketball
01:09:07players, sneakers soon became one of those fashion fundamentals similar to jeans and leather jackets.
01:09:14If you take a closer look at them, you'll see they have two extra holes on the side,
01:09:18similar to the shoelace holes. They're manufactured as such not only to provide
01:09:22extra ventilation but to allow people to get extra creative with their laces when wearing the shoes.
01:09:28Admit it, you've always thought that chopsticks are merged at the end for the sole purpose of
01:09:32keeping them together until you're ready to dig into your meal. That may or may not be the whole
01:09:37truth. Under a more detailed inspection, the wooden tools feature a square-shaped end. Chopsticks
01:09:44manufactured like this date back to an old Japanese traditional design, which can help
01:09:49with breaking the ends easily. The separated end can then be used as a resting block for the
01:09:54chopsticks to keep it more sanitized in hopes it can be used again, since they won't be touching
01:10:00the table or any other surface. Women's bikes have a special design which, surprisingly,
01:10:06has a historical and fashionable purpose. The lower frame is for the most part meant to make
01:10:11up for the generally shorter height of ladies compared to that of the average gentleman.
01:10:16While that is the case for handlebars and saddles, the overall frame is lower for an
01:10:21additional purpose. Way back when women wore long skirts and dresses all day, every day they needed
01:10:26to make sure their outfits wouldn't get caught in the frame. That's how we came up with a lower-framed
01:10:32bicycle, perfectly made for women and their needs at the time. The fact that toothpastes are
01:10:38multi-colored is not just a nice perk to make dental hygiene more fun. There's a secret meaning
01:10:44related to each of the colors, which dates back to the 1970s. In those days, people grew more and
01:10:50more interested in their oral health care, and as such, they were looking for products which could
01:10:55do more than merely clean their teeth. One company was the pioneer in that regard, adding mouthwash to
01:11:02its toothpaste, meaning the blue strip. They later added on the red strip, meant to feature ingredients
01:11:08which helped with gum care. Speaking of toothpaste, check the cap next time you open a new tube.
01:11:14You may be in for a little surprise. There's a pointed cone shape inside the cap, so you can
01:11:19puncture the seal of the toothpaste without cutting yourself or ruining your manicure. Not to mention,
01:11:24it's more hygienic since you won't be able to transfer germs or other bacteria into the product
01:11:30itself. On the subject of bathroom countertop items, toothbrushes come with a neat add-on hidden
01:11:36in the bristle patterns. Apart from making the toothbrush look cooler, they also do come with
01:11:41a practical purpose. Most toothbrushes come with a pattern of blue bristles intertwined with white
01:11:47ones. The blue dye is meant to fade out, signaling the time when you need to replace your toothbrush.
01:11:54Dentists say that toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months, but it does serve as a
01:11:59great reminder in case you forget. Still love playing with Lego? Don't judge. Hey, it's a great
01:12:05hobby for all ages. Notice there's a hole on top of the Lego heads? Behold, you're looking at a safety
01:12:11feature that the people at Lego designed to prevent choking hazards. The most dangerous issue should
01:12:17a person swallow any of these pieces is the blocking of the airways. Designing a hole inside
01:12:23the Lego head helps the air to flow freely through the piece until it can be removed safely.
01:12:29We're now used to all sorts of modern light bulbs, some tubular, some shaped like diamonds, and some
01:12:34even twisted all together. Historically, light bulbs were round and the initial shape served
01:12:40a purpose in itself. It was mainly connected to the fact that glass bulbs were hand-blown,
01:12:46which gave them the round shape to begin with. The hidden practical reason was that
01:12:50the light bulb filament needed to be at the same distance from every surface of the glass sphere.
01:12:55The easiest way to achieve this was to make the glass in the shape of a globe.
01:13:02If you ever find yourself stuck in the trunk of your car, stay calm. All cars are supposed
01:13:07to be equipped with an emergency latch to help open the trunk from the inside in the unlikely
01:13:12case it happens. These latches are so well thought out that they can be opened by people
01:13:17of all ages. More so, handles are designed to glow in the dark too. You can even pull them with the
01:13:24mouth if there's not enough wiggle room to use your hands. Never mind how you ended up in the
01:13:28trunk in the first place. Moving on… If you're ever working with needle and thread, remember,
01:13:34you don't need to stick the needle directly into the spool. You may end up losing the needle
01:13:39altogether. Not to mention, you can easily hurt your fingers! A lot of modern sewing kits these
01:13:45days come with a designated place for safeguarding the needles. It's located at the bottom part of
01:13:50the thread spool. You'll just need to pull it out. It's even made to hold multiple sewing needles
01:13:56at a time. Disposable ballpoint pens come with a little secret of their own. Did you ever notice
01:14:02that in some of them, there's a small hole in the plastic part? It's actually a rudimentary
01:14:08ventilation system. It's supposed to let the ink easily make it to the tip of the pen.
01:14:14Okay, I know it's in the name, but you really don't need to shake the seasoning shaker to get
01:14:19any product out. Don't believe me? You're not the only one. Go grab your favorite seasoning
01:14:25bottle out of your pantry. If it has one of those removable plastic caps, it's perfect for the
01:14:30experiment. Instead of shaking the bottle, try holding it from the plastic cap while it's upside
01:14:36down. Now gently twist the bottle from side to side and, before you know it, you get some
01:14:42gorgeously flowing seasoning without having to wiggle the shaker and make a mess all over the
01:14:48stove. On the same note, most salt and pepper shakers should have ridges on the bottom of the
01:14:54glass portion. In case you get any seasoning stuck in there, place the bottom of the salt shaker
01:14:59against the bottom of the pepper shaker and wiggle it around so the ridges click with each other.
01:15:05The seasoning should easily pour out now without you having to open the bottle.
01:15:10In colder weather, you often have so many clothing layers on you that you can hardly feel the purse
01:15:16or back straps on your shoulder anymore. Not to mention how fast they can slide off. Some jackets
01:15:22come with a built-in solution for that, in the form of a small tab on the shoulder with either
01:15:27a hook or a button. It's meant to be opened and closed comfortably so you can keep your purse
01:15:32in place at any time. You're most likely using it merely to peel the skin of potatoes, carrots,
01:15:39or cucumbers. But you can use your vegetable peeler for chopping fine strips of onion as well.
01:15:46Just cut the onion into quarters vertically and then start slicing. This might also help out with
01:15:52those embarrassing onion tears. Most people miss this one, but should you ever have a closer look
01:15:58at your toothpaste tube, you will surely see some sort of coloring there, either a dot or a block.
01:16:05Colors can vary. They can be black, green, red, or even blue. These color spots are actually meant
01:16:11to help the assembly machines back at the toothpaste factory. They recognize when and
01:16:16where these machines need to cut the toothpaste tubes and proceed to fold them for packaging.
01:16:22For most types of footwear, if there's anything that seems a bit out of place,
01:16:26always know that it's there for a reason. Most manufacturers don't put extra items on shoes
01:16:31just for fun. It would definitely be a waste of time and resources. For footwear like boots,
01:16:37for example, there's often a small loop at the top back of the shoe. It's there to help you
01:16:43when you need to put the shoe on since you can quickly pull on it. Plus, you can also hang the
01:16:48shoes somewhere, most likely to dry, since most boots are meant to be worn in the colder weather.
01:16:54Now, I've been guilty at least once of overdressing with a bunch of layers
01:16:58just so I won't need to jam everything in my check-in bag. But does it become a problem
01:17:04when you actually have to get seated? What do you do with your coat or your jacket? Well,
01:17:09have a closer look next time you board a plane on the seat in front of you. The hook that keeps the
01:17:14tray table upright can double as a jacket hook. As long as you don't need to have any meals while
01:17:20in the air, you're good to go. Most mascaras expire within 3-6 months, I'm told, depending
01:17:28on the manufacturer. But you can help speed up that process if you're not careful enough.
01:17:33Continuously pumping the mascara wand, trying to mix in the product actually pushes more air into
01:17:39the tube. This can make it dry much faster, and you evidently won't get the desired results with
01:17:44it anymore. There's an easy way to check if your mascara is still good enough to use.
01:17:50If you don't hear a popping noise when you take the brush out, you may very well need to go get
01:17:55yourself a new mascara tube. Now I know we're living in the era of Bluetooth-connected devices,
01:18:02but for better quality sound, they still recommend using headphones that connect via audio jacks.
01:18:09Remember seeing black ridges on those jacks? They aren't there just to make them fit when
01:18:13you plug them into your phone or laptop. Made out of a special insulating material,
01:18:19these bands are meant to guard the wires when sound is being transmitted. Based on the number
01:18:24of bands, you can figure out which end goes where. Some empty space under noodles in a cup
01:18:30doesn't mean the company producing them wants to cheat you out of a full portion. No, no! It's a
01:18:35manner of keeping the noodles intact during their transportation. It also helps with the circulation
01:18:41of hot water that is poured over the products before you can enjoy them. The V-shaped neckline
01:18:47was initially designed to serve a bunch of objectives. First, as a way of prolonging the
01:18:52life of the garment that would maintain its shape over the years. It's also there to fit your head
01:18:57through the shirt in case it needs some stretching. This way, it ensures a snugger grip around the
01:19:02neck. Lastly, it helps absorb sweat in case you're wearing the shirt while exercising.
01:19:08Now it's not necessarily a custom anymore, but you may have stumbled upon a dinner jacket
01:19:14with an additional mysterious pocket on the right side. Turns out, this pocket was used by
01:19:19men to easily reach their train tickets, since most of them had to travel to work every day.
01:19:25It helped them keep their jacket buttoned up, but also benefited from the use of a pocket.
01:19:30Now it's only added as a decoration, and it doesn't serve an actual purpose anymore.
01:19:36Speaking of things we don't use these days, or at least for their initial purpose,
01:19:41did you know Play-Doh was originally a cleaning product? In the 1920s, the market was in need of
01:19:47a product that could help them wipe the wallpapered areas around coal-burning furnaces.
01:19:52The recipe for what we now know as Play-Doh was thus invented. It was manufactured in white only,
01:19:59and was supposed to clean wallpaper by being rolled back and forth over the dirt. It was
01:20:04only later, in the 1940s, that new products for cleaning wallpaper were brought up,
01:20:10and Play-Doh was redirected toward another area of the market.
01:20:14Now while I enjoy a nice piece of toast for breakfast, isn't it pesky to have to clean out
01:20:20the toaster? Well, not anymore, since I recently found out that toasters have a slide or a panel
01:20:26at the bottom that helps get rid of all those annoying breadcrumbs easily.
01:20:34Now there used to be a time when you could only have access to video games
01:20:38by inserting cartridges in your console of choice. These tiny objects gave many doctors
01:20:43a lot of headaches. People soon started popping up in hospitals after swallowing small game
01:20:49cartridges, especially the younger generation. Nintendo, the company that manufactures the
01:20:55majority of these devices, had to come up with a creative solution to prevent these accidents.
01:21:00So these days, Nintendo Switch cartridges are purposely coated with specific chemicals
01:21:06that can leave a really bad, bitter taste in the mouth. Not that I'd, you know,
01:21:10recommend you ever try and taste for yourself. The cylinder on the end of a cable is sitting there,
01:21:18useless as it might seem. In fact, this is a ferrite bead that assists with many electrical
01:21:25wires to reduce electromagnetic interference. Electrical wires act like unintentional antennas,
01:21:31broadcasting the EMI. There's a reason why the spinning wheel inside the microwave is circular.
01:21:39A circular object will evenly distribute the heat as opposed to a rectangular and square one.
01:21:46When you place containers of these shapes inside, the energy is focused on the corners
01:21:51rather than spread evenly like in a round container. The temperature gauge on a toaster
01:21:58is commonly used to determine how crisp you like your toast, but the other, more specific use for
01:22:03the gauge was for the different types of bread. White and sweet types of bread heat up much faster
01:22:10as opposed to heavier brown and rye ones. The older bread is, the more time it will need in
01:22:16a toaster to ensure the golden brown results you're looking for. Most ovens give you the
01:22:23option of leaving the door ajar when broiling a dish inside. You probably think the goal here is
01:22:29to help cool down the oven after use. In reality, its purpose is to focus on cooking the top of the
01:22:36dish and to ensure a crusty layer. Controlling the buildup of heat and steam by releasing it through
01:22:42the slightly ajar door gives you the desired result without cooking the entire dish to a crispy end.
01:22:50You probably noticed that your dishwasher has specific areas for different types of cutleries
01:22:55and dishware, but all the dishware pieces should be facing towards the center and not all in one
01:23:02direction. What types of foods were on the plates will also determine where they should be located
01:23:08in the racks. As the middle of the machine gets the strongest spray, carb-based stains from tomatoes
01:23:15and potatoes should be placed there. The detergent is more focused on the outside during the clean,
01:23:21creating a waterfall-like cleanse. That's why protein-based stains, like from eggs for example,
01:23:28should be stacked there. Ceiling fans push cool air down on a hot day, circulating the room,
01:23:36but they can serve you during the winter just as effectively if you flick that switch on the side
01:23:41or use the pulley. So if you want to save some money on heating and try to quickly warm up your
01:23:47room on a cold day, turn the fan on. It will push the air up and spread the warm air around,
01:23:52more effectively warming the room up. Do you still use sticky notes instead of those fancy new apps
01:24:00on all possible gadgets? Welcome to the club. Regardless of what you use them for, they can
01:24:06annoyingly curl up. If you've had this issue, it's because you've peeled them from the bottom upwards.
01:24:12Doing it this way causes the curling. Peeling them from the side will ensure they remain flat,
01:24:17ready to remind you of your daily tasks. Did you know that can openers weren't invented until 50
01:24:25years after preservation cans had been readily available? So how would it be possible to open a
01:24:30can? There are a couple of alternative methods just in case you've misplaced your trusty opener.
01:24:37All you need is a metal spoon. Set the can down on the counter, hold onto it firmly, and grasp the
01:24:43head of the spoon tightly. Apply pressure and vigorously rub the edge of the can's top over a
01:24:50small area. It takes time, but as you continuously rub, a small indentation soon opens a hole.
01:24:57Once the hole is wide enough for the spoon's tip, pry the lid upwards and keep going along the edges
01:25:03until you can finally access the hard-earned meal within. Most toilets rely on water pressure and
01:25:10gravity to function, so a power outage will not affect them. But if yours does need electricity
01:25:16to function, you must be worried about using it when the power is out. The good news is the power
01:25:22is only used to fill the toilet and not to flush it. As the flushing mechanism will still work,
01:25:27open the toilet tank and pour in a couple of gallons, and you're free to flush away whatever
01:25:32you need to. Blockages in shower drains occur over a long period of time. It's inevitable. We lose 50
01:25:40to 100 hairs a day, and many of them will endeavor to reside within our shower drains. Hair only forms
01:25:47the foundations of the blockage, and this attracts the buildup of various other things. A great life
01:25:53hack is to use your vacuum cleaner and put the nozzle in the hole once removing the plug. Apply
01:25:58a wet cloth around the nozzle, ensuring air cannot escape. The vacuum will suck up the blockages a lot
01:26:05easy. This will help avoid any extra costs from plumbers, as they themselves use this technique.
01:26:12To make your candles last longer, trim their wicks multiple times and keep them as far away from water
01:26:17and moist as possible. It will guarantee that your candle's wax stays firm and steady and continues
01:26:24to burn slower for a longer period of time. The empty space between the panes of the oven door
01:26:31is there for a reason. You can stick a brush in there to clean the oven door glass. It's easy to
01:26:38access this space through the bottom of the door, open the lower shelf, then push the brush through
01:26:43the hole. While you're parking in a garage, you might find it difficult to determine how close
01:26:50to it you need to be. Not all cars have sensors ensuring you keep the right distance before the
01:26:55bumper makes an indentation on the wall. Applying a rope with a tennis ball from the ceiling at the
01:27:01right distance will help you learn the best distance to park from the wall. We've all been
01:27:07told to loosen a lock with WD-40 or lubricant. Yes, we all know we should have these around the house,
01:27:13but in case you don't, a great alternative is drawing with a gray lead pencil along the edges
01:27:19of the key and then putting it into the lock. Continue doing this until the keyhole has been
01:27:25adequately lubricated and the key functions smoothly. Pliers are prone to damage when you
01:27:31use them to adjust faucets and shower heads and are also difficult to grip. Take a couple of pieces
01:27:37from the end of an old garden hose and attach them to the jaws of the pliers. You'll find a
01:27:43huge improvement with grip and will avoid wear and tear. You can find a good use for discarded rubber
01:27:50for different things around the house. When fed up with tightening or loosening with a screwdriver,
01:27:56try using a simple rubber band. Place part of it into the screw grip and the screwdriver will
01:28:02have far greater traction. Moving cement blocks isn't safe for your lower back. Even with a
01:28:09wheelbarrow, it can be a risky process to place the cement onto the ground without causing damage.
01:28:15Three simple cylinder pipes can make a world of difference, regardless of the size of the block.
01:28:20Try lifting the edge onto the first pipe with a pry bar, then pushing and maneuvering as you
01:28:26gradually direct the three pipes towards the desired location. Just make sure you're not doing
01:28:32this on a slope. That first strike on a nail can be a great success or will result in a throbbing
01:28:39thumb. A bobby pin is perfectly shaped to hold a nail in place, allowing for your hand to be clear
01:28:46out of harm's way and for you to strike the nail without fear. Use a crayon instead of a pen or
01:28:53pencil while working with a wet saw to ensure the markings are not removed. They will also be easier
01:28:59to see under the murky water. Checking the drains on the roof and determining when they need to be
01:29:06cleaned can take a lot of time. Using duct tape, attach a mirror on the end of a long broom and
01:29:13review whether the drains need to be cleaned. To further assist with your balance as you check on
01:29:19the gutters, attach a pair of old trainers to the end of the ladder. The spread of the shoe and its
01:29:25grip will ensure a further level of safety. Liquid caulk normally comes in huge tubes, so you can
01:29:32never use it all at once. The hardened tips of liquid caulk create blockages. Grab a used cork
01:29:39and drill through it to make a perfect lid, concealing the liquid caulk. Now it's ready to be
01:29:44used again with no blockages. Seat belt on the passenger seats has a fabric loop. When put under
01:29:51a great amount of pressure, the stitches on the loop rip apart, so the excess fabric can assist
01:29:57in cushioning the passengers. The extra few inches can make a great difference within a dire circumstance.
01:30:03However, there isn't one on the driver's side. As the driver is so close to the steering wheel,
01:30:09it's safer for them not to have one. Seat belts were originally invented in the mid-19th century,
01:30:15though this technology wasn't brought into common practice until the 1960s. Pre-collision sensory
01:30:22technology has assisted with developing the safety of seat belts and other features to the next level.
01:30:28Effectively predicting a car's collision, the technology directs the seat belts to automatically
01:30:33tighten, aligning the airbags and ensuring the brakes will be pre-loaded to reduce shock.
01:30:39Every year, 6 million car accidents occur, which explains why all cars still must continue to
01:30:46develop safety features, not only to alleviate accidents, but to protect people more effectively
01:30:51within their cars. The materials that make up the body of cars only started getting replaced
01:30:58within the last 25 years, ranging from aluminum and magnesium alloys to carbon fiber composites.
01:31:04These lighter materials not only enable a more fuel-efficient journey, but they also ensure
01:31:09that when a car is in an accident, its build provides a crumple zone. As a car hits another
01:31:15object, the crumple zone absorbs energy from the collision. Although this would appear to cause
01:31:21more damage to the car, it helps prevent impact on the passengers. Front and rear bumpers are very
01:31:27underrated, and due to their long history of being used in cars, you can't imagine a time we didn't
01:31:33use them. They were invented in the late 1800s. The bumpers evolved over the years to the point
01:31:39we don't even realize we have them, but they're there, quietly waiting under the outer covers,
01:31:45consisting of compressible foam or plastic around a rigid reinforced bar.
01:31:49All the windows of your car are made of glass, but the windshield is made of a shatterproof version.
01:31:56It's laminated, so whatever might hit it, you can be sure there won't be any shards of glass
01:32:01falling into the front seats. Normal glass was used up until the 1950s. As vehicles became
01:32:07more prominent, they made modifications to ensure safety. Airbags seem like another common feature
01:32:15that has always been there. In fact, they were originally invented in 1968 and were ahead of
01:32:21their time. They slowly gained popularity, and through safety precautions for cars,
01:32:27they eventually became mandatory for all cars to have, only in 1998. They have since developed from
01:32:34just being an airbag within the steering wheel. Today, depending on the vehicle, they can be
01:32:39located throughout the car, ensuring all potential passengers will be protected.
01:32:44Crash sensors connected to an onboard computer detect when a collision occurs and trigger the
01:32:49bags, inflating within milliseconds and providing a cushioned safety within a blink of an eye.
01:32:56It can be difficult to predict the weather, and even more so to determine traction on the road.
01:33:01In the late 1960s, anti-lock braking systems, ABS, were implemented in vehicles. Before that,
01:33:09they had been used in many aircraft, with designs going as far back as 1908.
01:33:14They soon became a necessity for all vehicles, ensuring traction is maintained on slippery
01:33:19surfaces and that there is complete control when braking. Today, ABS has advanced so much
01:33:26that the latest variations ensure further detection when there are strong crosswinds.
01:33:32Cruise control, initially invented in 1948, has been in constant development over many decades.
01:33:38Today, adaptive cruise control ensures that when the car is cruising at a constant speed
01:33:44and detects a slower car ahead, it will then adjust the speed to match the car in front.
01:33:49Other advanced variants may also ensure the car will make a complete stop
01:33:54once identifying that the car in front has done the same.
01:33:58It's easy to forget to have your high beams on when driving on the long and lonesome road
01:34:02for many hours. Automatic high beams are quickly becoming more common.
01:34:07High-tech camera modules can easily determine what type of light is passing through and help
01:34:13ensure when the high beam will be necessary. Although versions of automatic high beams have
01:34:18been around since the 1950s, they counted on light-sensitive sensors and were very unreliable.
01:34:24The new varieties can identify the sources of light, whether it's from the sun, directly from
01:34:29a car's light, or even from the reflection on a sign, ensuring you won't cause issues with other
01:34:35drivers. It's a pain in the neck to have to ensure there isn't anyone creeping into that
01:34:41semi-visible corner, the blind spot, which causes around 400,000 accidents per year.
01:34:47Solar sensors within rear bumpers of vehicles and blind spot monitoring systems watch and
01:34:53identify adjacent lanes. They alert the driver that a vehicle may be in the lane beside them,
01:34:58whether by flashing lights on the dash or from beeping sounds. This way, they help to alleviate
01:35:04the many concerns the blind spot causes. 1.6 million road accidents are caused by texting
01:35:11and driving, and fatigue normally causes up to 10% of all car accidents per year.
01:35:17The driver attention monitor helps to alleviate both statistics. It works through sensors that
01:35:23monitor the car's movements and the amount of steering corrections to ensure the driver is
01:35:28paying attention to the road. When the system identifies that the driver isn't completely awake
01:35:33or is slightly distracted with their phone, it will prompt signals to suggest it's time for a
01:35:38break. Tires are among the most critical components for your car, with a close relationship with
01:35:44whatever path you take. Many safety features rely on the tires themselves for their own
01:35:49independent purposes. That's why it's super important to ensure the tires are always in
01:35:54top condition. Tire pressure monitoring systems check the air pressure of all four tires,
01:36:00ensuring you're aware when they need their pressure increased to avoid the risk of a blowout.
01:36:05The constant evolution in technologies continues to ensure you stay safe on longer stretches of
01:36:11the road. Lane departure warnings focus on the lines on the road, ensuring the car stays within.
01:36:17Whenever a car starts drifting over a line in the road without signaling to do so,
01:36:22the camera-based feature identifies and signals to the driver. The lane-keeping assist feature
01:36:28follows the same method of identifying when the car is intruding the bordering lane.
01:36:32When it gets too close, it will readjust the steering and center the car within its appropriate
01:36:37lane. Other features in more advanced cars have autonomous driving capabilities. The autopilot
01:36:45systems have taken cruise control to the next level. Not only does it allow the vehicle to
01:36:50steer itself in the intended lane while maintaining a set speed, but it also changes lanes when
01:36:55required, making the ride more and more efficient. Some safety features are only just making a trend
01:37:01in car models worldwide. For example, night vision, using thermographic cameras to look out
01:37:07for pedestrians and animals nearby. It goes within the infotainment screen, facing frontwards and
01:37:14identifying objects from their heat signatures. It's estimated that there are over 1.4 billion
01:37:20cars in use worldwide, and as the world's population increases, it's expected that the
01:37:25number of cars will follow suit. Safety features will continue to adapt further beyond what we know
01:37:31of today. Infrared headlights will be further adapted to be used in conditions with poor visibility
01:37:37like storms, snow, and fog. They'll be capable of enhancing the visibility of the driver in all
01:37:44conditions without affecting the sight of passing drivers. Driver override systems will soon be able
01:37:50to monitor and identify human behavior. Whether due to reckless conduct on the road or for other
01:37:55safety precautions, cars will soon have the functionality to take complete control of
01:38:00themselves, ensuring both the passenger's and the driver's safety. Augmented reality windshields are
01:38:06in early development already, providing some indicator reflections from the dash onto the
01:38:11windshield. So it's quite possible that soon all necessary directions for maps and alerts will
01:38:17appear right in front of the driver to ensure they never take their eyes off the road. Airbags
01:38:23will soon not only just be used within a car to ensure the passenger's safety, they will also
01:38:28activate from the outside of the car once they identify a definitive collision. The airbags will
01:38:34inflate outwards, covering the entire outside of the car and drastically reducing its impact. It
01:38:40may be so advanced that the bodywork of the car won't even need to be buffed out. The future
01:38:46technology of cars is expected to be so progressive that the cars themselves will have their own form
01:38:52of communication, not with human drivers, but with other cars. Just imagine, cars communicating and
01:38:58sharing information as they identify roadblocks, issues on the road, or disruptive weather patterns.
01:39:04It will all ensure the most efficient and safest route possible.
01:39:08It's your birthday party! You made a wish and blew out the candles. It's time to cut this delicious
01:39:15round cake. Your guests can't wait to taste it! Wait a minute, are you sure you actually know
01:39:21how to cut it? Normally, people prefer making V-shaped slices by default. Although this method
01:39:28is very popular, it's far from perfect. Some guests won't get enough frosting, so they'll
01:39:34get too much. And besides, cakes are pretty fragile, so crumbs can fall all over the place.
01:39:45This alternative method went viral because of its incredible practicality. All you need to do
01:39:52is press a large cutting board against the cake very gently. Then slice the cake across horizontally
01:39:59and move the long piece onto the cutting board. Now you can cut one big slice into several smaller
01:40:05slices for the guests. This will give them a chance to order exactly as much or as little
01:40:11dessert as they really want. Wait, who wants just a little dessert? You will also prevent the
01:40:17leftover cake from drying out too soon. And if someone asks for more, just keep repeating the
01:40:23cutting board trick as many times as you need to. If the number of guests at your party doesn't
01:40:29match the small size of your cake, there's an easy tip to make sure everyone's served. Cut the
01:40:34cake into small cubes, put them into paper baking cups, and pierce the slices with a toothpick to
01:40:40make sure the layers don't fall apart. You can serve this cake canapé on a tray.
01:40:47When you don't have a knife at hand to cut a cake, dental floss will help you out. If you
01:40:52manage to do the work gently, the floss will glide through your cake with ease and keep the icing
01:40:58decoration in perfect order. This method is also very handy when you want to cut pie or cake layers
01:41:04horizontally. Of course, it's better to use dental floss with a neutral flavor if you don't want to
01:41:10feel the minty frost in your dessert. You're hanging some pictures or framed diplomas on a
01:41:16wall – I have several – but they refuse to hang straight. If you're using a wire and only one nail,
01:41:23it's very likely that the picture will get crooked. So the better solution is to use two
01:41:28nails – they will help the artwork stay there straight. Also, make sure that the wire is only
01:41:33as long as it needs to be. Otherwise, the excess slack will make the pictures stagger on the wall.
01:41:40And finally, you can use these small clear sticky tabs. Stick them on the bottom corner
01:41:45of either side of your framed pictures and prevent them from slipping.
01:41:50Now, even the highest-quality markers stop working sooner or later. But that's not a reason to say
01:41:56goodbye to them. Glue the markers around the outer edge of a regular flower pot. Then spray this
01:42:02construction with gold paint. You'll get a glamorous vase that will spice up your interior.
01:42:08To complete this project, you can use not only a pot but any other cylindrical vase or tin cans
01:42:15that match the size of your markers. Have you ever spilled your hot drink down
01:42:20on your clothes as you were walking from the cafeteria to your desk? Probably yes. Most people
01:42:26wrap their hands around the mug or use a handle. But none of these methods is perfect because they
01:42:32leave room for burns. Recent studies have revealed the best way to hold a coffee mug to prevent any
01:42:38spillage. And I bet you don't use it on a daily basis. Put your hands in a claw-like shape,
01:42:45and grip your mug from above with your fingers. This will protect you from burning your palm
01:42:50and keeping your outfit tidy. And besides, it looks kind of elegant.
01:42:55Now in case you didn't know, there are little tabs on the sides of your foil container.
01:43:00You're supposed to push those in. Now when you pull the foil out, it's going to glide effortlessly.
01:43:07And the foil tube will be fixed in the container.
01:43:102. Shoe stores usually sell their items with small plastic hangers. Don't rush to throw away
01:43:16this accessory – it's not so worthless. If your shoes ever get wet, you can use it to hang them on
01:43:22a radiator so they dry quickly and evenly. This trick is especially handy when you get your feet
01:43:29wet on the way to work. 3. If you like to wash and dry your shoes in a washing machine to keep
01:43:35them fresh and tidy, you know that it can get really noisy. To avoid the sound of rocks rolling
01:43:42around the drum, put your shoes and your laces inside a mesh laundry bag. If you don't have a
01:43:48laundry bag, try using an empty pillowcase. You can also put a large old towel in the washing
01:43:54machine together with your shoes. It'll rub against the shoes and provide additional cleaning.
01:43:59Just make sure you don't wipe your face with this towel afterward.
01:44:034. Glass cleaning spray is a great emergency tool to restore your patent leather shoes.
01:44:09Just spray it on your shoes and wipe them using a soft dry cloth. Voila! Shining bright like a
01:44:16diamond! 5. Got some creases on your shoes? No panic! Stuff your shoes tightly with some
01:44:22fabric to bring them back to their original shape. Then put a damp towel over the crease.
01:44:28Gently steam the crease with an iron. It'll get softer or disappear completely.
01:44:35Here's a genius tip for storing and serving fresh herbs. Cut and mix different herbs,
01:44:41then put them in a plastic bottle. Screw the cap, and keep it in your fridge.
01:44:46Now you don't have to chop your herbs every time you're cooking something.
01:44:50You can also make an exclusive salad dressing. Just add some oil, spices, and sauce into this
01:44:56bottle and shake it to mix all the ingredients. 6. When you're reheating your food in a microwave,
01:45:03some part of the meal gets too hot while the rest of it stays frosty. So, in case you've
01:45:08been looking for different tips to deal with this issue, here's the classic one.
01:45:13Put your food on a plate and make a hole in the center so that your meal is donut-shaped.
01:45:18This way, the microwave will heat it more evenly. But don't put the dish in the center of the
01:45:24turntable. To heat it evenly, it's best to keep it on the outer edge. If you need to heat up two
01:45:30meals at the same time, put a clean upside-down cup inside the microwave. Then put your second
01:45:37plate on top of that cup. There you go! It's easy and time-saving. 7. You can squeeze lemon juice
01:45:44out using ordinary kitchen tongs. Cut the lemon in half and put one half into the tongs. Now press
01:45:51them under a bowl to collect the juice. Add some water, sugar, and ice, and enjoy your lemonade!
01:45:588. You're cooking popcorn in a microwave and can't wait to start watching the new episode
01:46:04of your favorite show. After one or two minutes of microwaving, little hard kernels still stay
01:46:10on the bottom of the popcorn bag. People tend to grab them by mistake. Biting these little
01:46:15betrayers can be fatal for your teeth. But luckily, there's a little slit in the bottom of
01:46:21the bag. Here's what you're supposed to do. When your popcorn is ready, don't rush to open the bag.
01:46:27Turn the bag upside down and shake it vigorously under a bowl. All the unpopped kernels will come
01:46:33out. Now you can enjoy your snack safely! 9. If you have accidentally burnt the food on
01:46:40your stove and want to avoid dealing with fire detectors, here's a simple trick. One of the
01:46:46best ways to remove smoke quickly is to use a half-wet towel. Hold onto the dry side of the
01:46:52towel and keep flinging it around over your head. The damp part of the towel will absorb the solid
01:46:58particles in the smoke very quickly. And there's no need to use a knife to peel kiwi. Just cut off
01:47:05the top and the bottom of the kiwi. Then gently insert a tablespoon inside of the kiwi and twist
01:47:11it to separate the skin from the fruit. Wow, your kiwi is now peeled! However, some people prefer
01:47:19eating kiwi with skin. It's perfectly edible and provides lots of fiber, folate, and antioxidants.
01:47:26So, if you don't mind this fluffy texture, go ahead. But don't forget to wash it first!
01:47:33Crackers have holes in them to stop them cracking and breaking during baking.
01:47:37If the holes weren't there, steam would build up inside the cracker and make it collapse.
01:47:43Take a look at a soda bottle and you'll notice a disc inside the bottle cap.
01:47:48This helps seal in the liquid and the drink's fizz, stopping it from going flat. The long neck
01:47:54on your soda bottle is designed like that to encourage you to hold it there. That way, the heat
01:47:59from your hand will only warm that top bit of the bottle instead of heating up your whole drink.
01:48:05It's always hard to see your food in the microwave because of that pesky black grate on the window.
01:48:11But it's there to stop harmful microwaves from escaping. Called the Faraday shield, it protects
01:48:17you as well as ensures that your food cooks properly. Food items like chips come with about
01:48:2343% nitrogen inside their package. It might seem like they sell you half a bag of air, but it's
01:48:30exactly the opposite. Oxygen, the gas we breathe, would react with the chips inside the bag and
01:48:36make them go rancid quickly. It's called oxidizing for a reason. Nitrogen, on the other hand, is an
01:48:42inert gas that helps keep the foodstuffs fresh and also protects them from breaking during
01:48:48transportation. A bag of chips that has this gas cushion lets you enjoy your crunchies without them
01:48:54turning to potato crumbs. Donuts have holes in them so that the inside and outside cook evenly.
01:49:01Before the holes were added, the inside would often be greasy and doughy while the outside
01:49:06was crisp. Margins on paper aren't for writing in dates and numbering lists. They were originally
01:49:13added to serve a protective function. Back in the day, rats used to be a pesky problem in people's
01:49:19homes and paper was one of their favorite snacks. Margins were added as a safeguard so that the
01:49:26rats would nibble on blank paper rather than taking a bite out of your important work.
01:49:32That hole in your hollow lollipop stick isn't to prevent choking should it ever be swallowed.
01:49:37It's actually there to keep the candy in place. Excess candy flows into the hollow tube and the
01:49:43hole, which when it hardens, keeps the pop in place. If it was a smooth stick, the candy would
01:49:50slide off easily. Vacuums come with so many attachments but do any of us really know what
01:49:56that one with long bristles is for? It's for dusting and is perfect for cleaning framed art,
01:50:01blinds, and lampshades. What's the difference between a wooden hanger and a plastic one? Aside
01:50:09from helping keep your clothes in shape, cedar wood hangers also repel moths and bugs. Salt isn't
01:50:16just used for cooking. It can get rid of tough smells. Rubbing salt on your fingertips after
01:50:22chopping garlic should remove the smell. It also works on shoes. Toasters have a secret slide in
01:50:28the bottom that can be removed so you can clean out all those annoying breadcrumbs.
01:50:34If you ever had problems with popping chocolates from the box, look at those little holes around
01:50:39them. They're there to help you. If you push a hole right next to the candy, it'll jump out easily.
01:50:46When you take a sip from a coffee cup with a lid, it decreases air pressure inside the cup
01:50:52so air tries to get in. The tiny hole on the lid allows air to enter that way so liquid can
01:50:59smoothly pour out the main hole. More on beverage lids. The small button on them let restaurant
01:51:06workers and customers too understand what's in a cup. Near each button there's a name. Just look
01:51:13at which one is pushed down. The numbers on the fruit stickers tell you how exactly they were
01:51:19grown. If there are four digits and the first is four or three, the fruit has been sprayed with
01:51:25pesticides. If there are five digits and the first is nine, the fruit has been grown organically.
01:51:33If there are five digits and the first is eight, the fruit has been genetically modified.
01:51:39When you're on your way back to the car after bagging up everything you bought,
01:51:43use loops on a shopping cart to hang the bags. Now softer items like bread, eggs,
01:51:50fruit, and veggies won't get squashed by the heavier goods.
01:51:54If you don't have anyone to hold the other end of your tape measure when you try to measure
01:51:59something, tap a nail on it. Now simply hook your tape on it using the tiny hole all tape measures
01:52:06have. The square shaped spoon that goes with a McFlurry helps to mix the ice cream toppings
01:52:13through the dessert. The spoon hooks directly to a machine and spins around. Padlocks that are
01:52:20used outside quickly get out of order because of rain. See this little hole in the bottom? It's
01:52:26made for pouring engine oil inside. Do this and the key will again turn in the lock without any
01:52:32difficulty. You keep banging the bottom of a glass ketchup jar but nothing's coming out. Here's a
01:52:39little tip, turn your ketchup bottle at an angle and tap on the middle of the neck. In many fast
01:52:46food restaurants, customers fill tiny folded paper cups to get a portion of ketchup or mustard.
01:52:53Here's the news, the cups are supposed to unfold and turn into small paper platters to hold a
01:52:59great deal more sauce. That little hole on the handle of a pot or a frying pan isn't just for
01:53:05hanging them on the wall. During cooking, put the end of your utensil in the hole and it'll be propped
01:53:12over the pot to save your kitchen from extra mess. The blue or any other dark color bristles on your
01:53:18toothbrush are meant to remind you when it's time to get a new one. If you see that bristles have
01:53:23become pale, change the toothbrush or its head. An extra hole at the upper part of the sink has
01:53:30multiple hidden functions. First, in case someone forgets to close the tap, the water won't overflow
01:53:37and the bathroom won't get flooded. Second, thanks to that hole, the water drains faster as it gives
01:53:44an escape for the air, helping the water flow down. Most metallic zippers have a hidden lock inside
01:53:50them to save you from awkward situations such as an undone fly. Don't leave the zipper handle in an
01:53:57upward position. When you pull it downwards, it automatically locks. It's all thanks to those tiny
01:54:03grooves hidden underneath the handle. Spoiled milk emits gases like most foods when they go off.
01:54:11A classic plastic milk jug has a concave shape on one side, so when the gases expand inside the jug,
01:54:18it expands too and the concave shape curves out. Also, if you want to save some milk for later and
01:54:25freeze it, the jug will expand when the milk gets solid as well, occupying more space in a jug.
01:54:32Bath foam isn't only for fun or a nice smell, it also helps regulate the temperature. The bubbles
01:54:38keep the water hot, so you can enjoy a bath a bit longer. Anyway, it works for acrylic bathtubs only.
01:54:45Those made of metal lose heat really fast either way. Many cups and mugs have little grooves on the
01:54:52bottom on purpose. They're designed for washing machines. The grooves let the water flow and not
01:54:58spill over your feet when you take the cup out. Also, those grooves let the air flow so the cup doesn't
01:55:05crack even if the tea is scalding. A point on an ointment cap is there for a reason too. Most tubes
01:55:13are usually sealed with foil and it's better to avoid opening it with fingers unless you're ready
01:55:18to say goodbye to your nails. A point easily opens even the most safely sealed tube. Escalator brushes
01:55:26aren't for keeping your shoes clean and polished. It might be tough to apply wax right on that brush
01:55:32while the escalator's on the move. It's for your safety. Brushes won't let you come close to the
01:55:37edge, so a long coat or boot cut jeans won't end up in between the steps. All Tic Tac containers
01:55:45are designed to dispense one Tic Tac every time you open it. The lid has the same shape as the
01:55:51candy. Turn the container upside down, gently shake it, and slowly open it. You'll notice only one candy
01:55:58stuck between those lid grooves. So if you just open the container and shake it until five or even
01:56:05more candies fall into your mouth, it means you've been eating Tic Tacs wrong all this time. The pom
01:56:11pom on top of your beanie wasn't put there as a fashion accessory. The pom pom was originally
01:56:17added to the hat to prevent sailors from banging their heads on the ceilings of the ships that were
01:56:22too low. You know, there are all sorts of amazing things you can do with products already lying
01:56:29around the house that were meant for other things. We'll explore some of those, plus everyday items
01:56:36that have other purposes you may not be aware of. I'm also in a silly mood, so let's have some fun!
01:56:44Many pairs of kitchen scissors today have a serrated opening where the handles and blades
01:56:49meet. You can use this as an herb stripper to de-stem difficult herbs like thyme, rosemary,
01:56:55and chives. Saves you a lot of time trying to pick the leaves off by hand. And if you're short
01:57:01of a vase, you could present roses to your significant other this way. Just be careful
01:57:06when you're pointing the sharp end. The metal tab on soda cans can be flipped around. You can slip
01:57:13a straw in place so you don't have to hold it up to your mouth. This stay-on tab replaced the pull
01:57:19ring tab created in the early 60s. You remember those, don't you? Those could be quite sharp and
01:57:25easily discarded where they could be a menace for others. Now you can pop your straw straight
01:57:32into one. Also means you can produce some bubbles and make a mess. Sometimes when you purchase an
01:57:39article of clothing, you receive a plastic baggie with an extra button and a swash of fabric.
01:57:45While the fabric is clearly used to patch holes, it can also be used to test the effects of various
01:57:51cleaners on certain surfaces. It's handy too to test wash cycles before using them
01:57:56to wash the whole garment. And if you want to clean your nose with it, that suggestion never
01:58:02came from me. You can use a screwdriver for leverage if you're having trouble lifting or
01:58:08moving something. Some also have a hexagonal-shaped handle that fits inside a wrench or spanner.
01:58:15You can use it to improve torque and, again, for leverage. A little easier on your hands.
01:58:20Some of us aren't that strong. Or maybe that's just me.
01:58:25Rubber bands are great for many things, but if you have a bottle that's hard to open,
01:58:30you can wrap the band around it for a better grip.
01:58:34Escalators have those fluffy black brushes for a similar reason that some have yellow lines on
01:58:40their steps. To try and deter people from getting too close to dangerous places. People
01:58:45don't always take notice, and sometimes clothing can drape close to a point where the step meets
01:58:51the edge or skirt. The brush is a little barrier to help prevent this from happening. They can also
01:58:57catch bits of fluff and prevent other small things from falling down into the gaps.
01:59:04Your average pair of jeans has several features that are both functional and somewhat sentimental.
01:59:10The metal rivets around the pockets help secure the stress points. This ensures they last a bit
01:59:16longer than average, though not all jeans have them. Many still have a tiny pocket directly
01:59:22above the main pocket. This was originally meant to hold a pocket watch. Even though
01:59:28pocket watches are mostly a thing of the past, many people still use this space to store coins,
01:59:34rings, or even a portable USB. Now this may seem a little obvious,
01:59:40but if you've ever wondered what all the notches are in a car tire, it's for traction on the road.
01:59:46However, they are also a good indicator if your tire is getting too worn down. If those notches
01:59:53aren't so deep anymore and are almost flush with the road, it's time to replace them. If you don't,
01:59:59the next time you try to stop suddenly at a stop sign, you might be surprised to find your car has
02:00:05turned into a giant roller skate. Those takeaway containers most associated with Chinese restaurants
02:00:12are designed to not only carry your food home, but to store them in the fridge.
02:00:18They double as a plate as you can eat straight out of them and don't have to worry about dirty
02:00:23dishes. They were actually patented way back in 1894 to transport freshly shucked oysters and
02:00:31were known as oyster pails. They were later adapted to use as leak-proof containers for food.
02:00:39While you're sitting on an airplane and looking out the window, you may have noticed those little
02:00:43holes, or in some instances, a small singular opening near the bottom. This is called a
02:00:49breather hole, and no, it's not for you. It's designed to equalize the difference in air pressure
02:00:55which builds up between the pressurized cabin and the atmosphere outside, especially during
02:01:01high altitudes. It also releases moisture from between the panes to avoid frost from forming
02:01:07on the windows and obstructing that all-important view. Sorry, but it looks like you won't be drawing
02:01:13a smiley face on it anytime soon. This was first introduced way back in 1956 by a company in Japan.
02:01:22Pretty cool, huh? They got their inspiration from snap-off rows on chocolate bars.
02:01:27Just don't get the two mixed up. One doesn't taste good. When it comes to measuring tape,
02:01:34almost every reel has an empty slot in the metallic end. This is called a nail grab,
02:01:40so you can attach it to a nail or screw. A handy trick to do measurements without requiring
02:01:46someone else to hold it in place. Very nifty. Bobby pins have grooves on one side to hold
02:01:54your hair in place better. Crazy notion, huh? The straight side goes face up while the grooves go
02:02:01down against your head. They're called bobby pins because of the bobbed hairstyle which was popular
02:02:07in the 1920s, though the pins were invented in the 19th century. The look is gone, but the pins
02:02:13remain. Please take them out before you wash your hair as they don't look great stuck to your fingers.
02:02:21If you've been in a car or a bus and noticed the textured black dots baked into the black edges,
02:02:27you've probably worked out that it's not there for its pretty looks. It's called frit, a ceramic
02:02:33paint. Its main purpose is to protect the window from ultraviolet rays. It also creates a rough
02:02:39surface for the adhesive to cling to. Now if you see a pink lump of adhesive in the corner,
02:02:46please do not touch it. It's actually someone's old bubble gum. If you take a look at the bottom
02:02:54of the lock, chances are you'll see one or two little holes. This is to let water out from the
02:02:59inside that may have been trapped due to rain. This mini-draining capability prevents the inner
02:03:05working from rusting over or freezing in place if the weather's very cold. If, in another situation,
02:03:12the lock becomes stuck, you can ease an oil-based product inside to lubricate the lock and get it
02:03:20working again. If you've lost the key and want to ease your frustrations, you can yell into the
02:03:26holes. It won't do anything to unlock it, but it may help you feel a little better.
02:03:32Some dress shirts have a fabric loop on the back. You guessed it, it's used for hanging the shirt
02:03:38up. The loops were reportedly first used in the Navy, as it was easy to simply hang them on the
02:03:44wall. During the 1960s in colleges, the fashion of the day was to wear the shirt buttoned all the
02:03:51way to the top, which made them difficult to hang. So designers began putting the loop on the back.
02:03:58If the student removed the loop, it signified that they were going steady in a relationship.
02:04:03Unless your friend ripped one off for a prank, now everyone's asking whom you're with.
02:04:09There's a little more to this story, but we haven't got time to
02:04:12hang around. And yes, that's a bad pun. On purpose. It's what I do.
02:04:19Ever wondered why coins have those little ridges along the edge? It's a leftover from earlier times
02:04:25when they were worth more. Counterfeiters could easily file the edges off to sell as gold or
02:04:31silver coins to make some profit. The ridges were created so it was much easier to tell which of the
02:04:37coins had been altered. It's not needed today, but the coins still have that altered style.
02:04:42If you ever get really bored, you could try counting how many ridges there are.
02:04:49Actually, that is a very boring idea. Forget that and watch another Bright Side video instead.
