00:00I think we have a lot of so-called brownfield sites and there's a hell-bent to build something
00:24on brownfield. I think we should consider the rewilding option as well.
00:29We would triple our support to farmers and help them provide local healthy food for us.
00:36Labour wants to bring in a cheaper, zero-carbon electricity system by 2030.
00:42Everything that's happening is making people dependent on the car.
00:47And I will stop there because I think I've made the point that we need to get our welfare
00:50system to a point where people can afford to eat properly.
00:54Four of the seven candidates for Sevenoaks are debating one of the biggest issues of our age.
00:59Only the Conservative and Reform UK candidates chose not to attend the climate hustings
01:05organised by the Sevenoaks Climate Action Network and Kent Wildlife Trust.
01:10Over the course of two and a half hours, candidates discussed a range of topics,
01:15from their carbon footprint.
01:16We know that local, sustainable options will reduce our carbon significantly.
01:25We have to think carefully about things like rubbish collection and making it easier for
01:29people to recycle, simple things like that, so everyone can play a part and be really, really proud.
01:34I decided to stop flying, as it was the single biggest contributor to my carbon footprint,
01:40and I have taken one short-haul flight in the last six years since 2018.
01:45I have been tracking my own carbon footprint, but only for heating and cooking, not for this.
01:53And my goods anyway, using this little tool, was 6.7 tonnes.
01:57To tackling sewage in our rivers.
02:00So our sewage problem is much more to do with the investment in the system and making sure
02:05that we can deal with our own sewage in our own location.
02:08The problem is we don't have a proper, as far as I can establish,
02:12we don't have a proper stormwater management system.
02:15We think that the only way to end the scandal of water companies pumping shocking amounts
02:22of sewage into our waters is to take back water companies into public ownership.
02:28We shouldn't be paying for their mistakes and their incompetence.
02:33Failing water companies will be put in special measures.
02:36And as the hustings concluded, it was clear that while the audience may have enjoyed the debate...
02:42Has anyone changed how they will be voting based on what they have heard tonight?
02:48They hadn't been swayed just yet.
