00:00The latest in the National Basketball Association coaching search, which officially comes to
00:07a close in Los Angeles.
00:10As it turns out, JJ Reddick is going to be the guy to lead the Lakers into the future.
00:16He ends up getting hired yesterday, courtesy of ESPN, 15 years in the NBA, and naturally,
00:22as we know by now, was not the first choice to coach the team, but ends up getting the
00:27job.
00:2815 years old was the general manager, Rob Polenka, on everything going on with his career,
00:38and naturally, this is just a huge win for the Los Angeles Lakers if this ends up turning
00:43out to go well for them.
00:46Meanwhile, yesterday at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama, the St. Louis Cardinals
00:51beat the New York Giants by a final of six to five, a very emotional ceremony honoring
00:57Willie Mays.
00:58The game sort of took a backseat with all the legends that were there, too, honoring
01:02the Negro Leagues, Ken Griffey Jr., and Barry Bonds, and David Ortiz, and so many other
01:07celebrities there.
01:09Cardinals end up winning this game by a final of six to five, and Brendan Donovan from Alabama,
01:14with the big shot in this game, Oliver Marmol talked about the Cardinals playing much better
01:18and naturally getting the win in that historical field.
01:20Guys have been playing well.
01:21We've been playing a lot of close ball games, and that's meaningful.
01:27It's going to pay off down the road when you play in so many 1-2 run ball games, but
01:31we're starting to swing the bats a lot better.
01:33That's been the ups and downs of our season has been the offense.
01:37Pitching has done a nice job to this point.
01:38The bullpen's been really good, but moving forward, I think our offense is in a much
01:42better spot and more consistent.
01:44You get New Bar and Contreras back here soon, and it definitely changes the game.
01:50Perspective.
01:51It was fun.
01:52The stadium's small, but it felt like the feeling of it was pretty cool.
01:58The pre-game ceremonies were incredible.
02:02During that time, I got emotional just standing there, knowing where you're standing, and
02:08just the overall feel of the tribute to William A, just like, man, the impact he had on people
02:17that he met, but also people that he never met, and that's when you know you've done
02:21it right, when you can have that type of influence, so the ceremonies were incredible.
02:25They really were.
02:26Yeah.
02:27Really good job by Major League Baseball, I thought, especially with everything happening
02:31before the game, and the game itself was very well played.
02:33Meanwhile, a not-well-played game yesterday by the New York Yankees.
02:37First time, it feels like all season, they had a starting pitcher get blown up.
02:40Luis Gil came back down to earth after a fantastic couple of months here in Major League Baseball.
02:45Let's be honest.
02:46Not everybody can pitch great every time out.
02:4817 runs, though.
02:49That's a lot.
02:50Baltimore put up a 17 spot.
02:51It took two out of three from the Yankees.
02:54Orioles are far from done right now.
02:55Looks like they're right in this thing, and this could go right down to the final week,
02:59or even maybe the final day, who knows, of the Major League Baseball season.
03:02Aaron Judge, though, was back in the lineup after getting hit by a pitch on his hand,
03:05said he felt pretty good, and knows that the Orioles are formidable.
03:08It's all good.
03:09It's all good.
03:10You know, there's still some falling, some soreness, and stuff like that, especially
03:13on foul balls, but if you score it up, it feels pretty good.
03:16Reassurance for you when you get a piece of that one, and you're able to still drive
03:19the ball?
03:21Yeah, definitely.
03:22Got a good pitch to hit, and I'm just trying to, you know, do something out there, put
03:26the ball in play, and I'm lucky I was able to get over the fence.
03:29They're a good ball club.
03:30You know, we saw that last year.
03:31You know, they got some great young players, you know, play hard, play fast, you know,
03:35some great arms, starting pitching in bullpen, and, you know, it's fun competing against
03:40those guys.
03:41You know, they bring it every single day, and even like today, you know, came out swinging
03:45early on, and, you know, had some early success against Hill, and, you know, really couldn't
03:50answer back after that, but, you know, it's a fun team to compete against.
03:53Yeah, definitely.
03:54It's, like you said, we got a half game on them, and it's going to be back and forth
03:59all the way until the end of September, that's for sure, and, you know, I think we're looking
04:03forward to, you know, having those battles back and forth, but, you know, when it really
04:07ultimately comes down to us just taking care of ourselves, you know, we go out there and
04:10play the baseball that we're supposed to, you know, clean it up on defense a little
04:13bit, clean it up on certain things, and, you know, we'll take care of it and be where we
04:17want to be.
04:18Meanwhile, the Yankees pitching has been fantastic, even without Garrett Cole, who just returned
04:23this week after being on the injured list, but it was not a fantastic day for the first
04:27time this season for starting pitcher Luis Gil, who got beat up by the Orioles, but said
04:32just one of those days.
04:33Luis, were you at all taken aback at how aggressive the Orioles were in this one?
04:48I mean, they have a really good lineup, you know, and there's good days and bad days out
05:15there, you know, and today definitely not my best, you know, I felt like I let the team
05:19down today, but, you know, we have, we have, we definitely have more games ahead of us,
05:25you know, and I'm sure that we're going to be able to turn the page on this one and improve,
05:31you know, I believe in myself and I definitely believe in my teammates.
05:36All right.
05:37Well, Luis Gil will take them out next week, hoping for better results.
05:40Meanwhile, the Yankees are hoping for an injury result that's positive from Gleyber Torres,
05:45who left the game yesterday in the fifth inning with some tightness in his right groin.
05:49DJ LeMahieu played third from first and Ben Rice had to enter the game.
05:54Meanwhile, Shohei Otani, another home run, six home runs in his last 10 games.
05:59He's the new leader in the National League, surprise, surprise, also Clayton Kershaw took
06:03another step in his recovery, three innings in his first rehab start.
06:07He's hoping to return at some point later this month or next month and pitch the second
06:11half of the season.
06:12We do have one very fun game, I think, going on this afternoon, 220 Eastern, a good pitching
06:17matchup also.
06:18Shoto Imanaga pitches for the Chicago Cubs, friendly confines of Wrigley Field.
06:21They'll take on the New York Mets.
06:23All right.
06:24Now let's get to the NBA.
06:25Of course, it is the off season, but some moves now coming down the pipe in terms of
06:29some trades and free agent signings.
06:30There was a small trade yesterday.
06:32Alex Caruso goes to the Thunder for Josh Giddey.
06:35Caruso was in the final year of his deal.
06:37Thunder makes the trade, hoping Caruso could be an integral player for the long-term.
06:41Giddey goes over to Chicago.
06:42Meanwhile, Malik Monk, he's a free agent.
06:45Looks like he's going to sign a four-year, $78 million deal to return to the Sacramento
06:51Kings.
06:52Had a great season last year.
06:53Also was the NBA's sixth-man runner-up, so Malik Monk looks like he is going back to
06:57Sacramento.
06:58Angel Reese, having a nice rookie season, sets the WNBA rookie record with a seventh
07:03consecutive double-double.
07:06They beat the Chicago Sky yesterday, 83-72.
07:09They had 16 points, 18 rebounds for the Sky.
07:12They had previously lost four games in a row.
07:14Also tonight in the WNBA, Kaitlyn Clark and the Fever taking on the Atlanta Dream, Fever
07:20minus two and a half there.
07:22All right, now it is all on the line tonight in the Stanley Cup Finals.
07:25Can the Florida Panthers finally close this thing out?
07:28They lead the series three to two.
07:29Oilers are a slight favorite in tonight's game.
07:32The New England Patriots have re-signed Ramondre Stevenson to a contract extension for years,
07:38for the running back.
07:39Also, Ryan Garcia has been suspended, the boxer, one year by the New York State Athletic
07:44Commission.
07:45His win over Devin Haney is now a no contest.
07:48He also has to forfeit $1 million to Golden Boy Promotions.
07:52And finally, over in tennis, Carlos Alcarez has agreed to a new 10-year deal with Nike
07:57worth up to $200 million.
07:59According to Revelo, 21-year-old will get his own cool Nike logo.
