00:00East Side Dave here, and I'm with my partner, Stanley Mack.
00:04Of course, you know us as the East Side Dave and Son Wrestling Show,
00:08the only father-son wrestling podcast in the world.
00:12And we're extremely excited because a few weeks ago,
00:17we got to talk to Chris Jericho,
00:19and now we're talking to someone who I am going to say right now
00:24is bigger than Chris Jericho.
00:27So I think that is ā you can't even deny that or debate that.
00:32We're very excited to talk to Paul White of AEW.
00:36Thank you guys very, very much for having me.
00:39By the way, I love the fact that it's a father-and-son show.
00:42I love the fact that your son's nice enough to carry you through the show.
00:46So we know where the real talent is.
00:49Paul, I'm not going to disagree with you in any way, shape, or form.
00:53I'm recognized by our own audience as the heel, and he's the babyface.
00:58Yeah, you're definitely a heel.
01:00He's the babyface.
01:01You get that right away.
01:02There you go.
01:03Well, first, congratulations on everything.
01:05Your career is going incredibly,
01:07and we want to promote instantly your brand-new role in the film Marcus.
01:13This is something that I'm, like, really, really interested in
01:16because we've watched you become this great actor,
01:19and you're fantastic, but you're always great in the comedic roles,
01:24but in Gus, it seems like a little more serious, a little more dramatic.
01:29Yeah, that's one of the things that drew me into Marcus was it was a different role for me.
01:35It wasn't ā the role isn't predicated on my size.
01:38It isn't predicated on my comedic timing.
01:40And it's really a role with some gut, some heart to it,
01:45and it's about the relationship between two human beings.
01:48And our main character, Marcus, is played by Owen Miller.
01:50However, it's really a great insight on the struggle that people have with mental health issues.
01:57You know, we've seen a lot of great films in the past of the actions on the outside
02:02of someone with mental health issues.
02:04This is a great film of what's really going on on the inside.
02:07You really get to sit back and go, ah, so that's what it's like.
02:12And for me, I thought it was a very powerful message to help a lot of people out there.
02:17It's a conversation we should have a lot more of on mental health and how to communicate.
02:22Because my character, Gus, is basically Marcus's only friend in this film.
02:27And I know there's something wrong, but like most folks, I don't know how to communicate
02:32or how to help with Marcus.
02:34I want to, but it's just a subject you don't broach.
02:38You know, you try to be encouraging, you try to be helpful.
02:40And I think Gus does a great job of kind of doing the right thing by not saying the atypical,
02:48hey, get over it, you know, that kind of thing.
02:52And Owen Miller does a great job of looking for hope.
02:55Because we know mental health issues is about looking for hope.
02:58And, you know, the relationship he has with his daughter, played by Catana Mahone,
03:03their relationship is very powerful.
03:05And there's just a lot of relatable, powerful things going on in this film that,
03:11in a dramatic way, I was super proud to be a part of.
03:14It sounds great.
03:15Standing Mac, do you have a question for Paul?
03:18How has AEW been different than the WWE?
03:25Well, for me, it's been a nice relief, Mr. Standing Mac.
03:30It's been a change because for four decades in the WWE, I worked five nights a week,
03:35very intense schedule, and it was very hard for me to pursue outside projects.
03:41However, with AEW, Tony Khan also gave me a unique opportunity to get into commentary,
03:46which is something that I always wanted to do.
03:48I felt like it was a great transition in wrestling to go from in-ring performing
03:52to go to commentary to help promote a lot of ways like Gorilla Monsoon did
03:57to help enhance the talent, but also bring a little bit of expertise from the ring
04:01and still be a part of an industry that I love.
04:03I know you guys are big wrestling fans, so you guys can empathize and understand
04:08with still wanting to be a part of the business.
04:11And also the freedom to do outside projects.
04:14I mean, Tony has been super supportive on a lot of outside projects that I'm doing.
04:19This, Marcus being one with a great message,
04:21and a couple other projects I've gotten to fire that, you know,
04:24I have the freedom and the ability to do it.
04:26And it's, at this stage of the game for me,
04:30it's not necessarily about going out and making that almighty dollar.
04:34It's about doing things that are challenging and also motivating for myself.
04:38You know, it's pretty amazing.
04:40Last year, I was thinking about this.
04:43In like a three or four month time period,
04:46the Rocks Jungle Cruise came out.
04:50Dave Bautista was in Dune.
04:52John Cena was in Peacemaker.
04:55These are all great projects.
04:57And here's Paul White.
04:59I'm going to say, there's got to be a Mount Rushmore of wrestlers turned active,
05:04thespians, and that you have to be, it's got to be you four, right?
05:08It's got to be you, Rock, and the Cena.
05:11I would definitely say those three without a doubt.
05:15And you.
05:16Well, that's very humble.
05:17I'm working on it.
05:19I might be at the ticket booth before you see Mount Rushmore.
05:22I haven't got on the mountain yet.
05:24We'll work on it.
05:25But, you know, the success that all three of those guys have had has really opened up.
05:31Definitely Rock has opened up.
05:32We all owe a debt of gratitude to Rock for opening up Hollywood to the ability for us as performers
05:39to perform and also bring our audience over, you know, because we have very loyal fans
05:45that want to see us, you know, also do our wrestlers, but also do other things.
05:49So, and the success that these three guys have had, Dave Bautista, you know, Blade Runner,
05:56Dune, you know, all these different, Riddick, all these different films that Dave is really
06:01I spy, like he's done such a great job.
06:06And John Cena has just knocked it out of the park with everything he's done as well.
06:10Peacemaker has been absolutely fantastic.
06:12John's comedy comes through because that's one thing about John.
06:17In real life, he's a very funny guy.
06:20Like, you know, he's always real serious John Cena in the ring, but outside the ring, John's
06:25one of the funniest guys I know.
06:27Like, he's got a real dry, witty sense of humor.
06:30And so to see those guys succeed, it gives inspiration to me.
06:35And those guys are a different type of character.
06:38Those guys are, let's be honest, those guys are good-looking leading role types.
06:43You know, my thing is I've always been the big bad guy, the bodyguard, or the comedy end
06:50of it.
06:50So for me to be able to kind of sink my teeth into something a little different and do this
06:56role in this dramatic film, I'm super proud of.
06:59You know, it's just, it's, that's the whole thing.
07:01You got to be able to put work forth and convince in one way or another.
07:06You got to convince other people that you can do the job.
07:08You know, because I mean, making movies is a business.
07:11It's about selling tickets, just like wrestling.
07:13And they're going to, just like wrestling, they're going to pick the best talent they can
07:16to sell that main event, to sell the tickets, to sell the pay-per-views.
07:19You know, at the same time with acting and movies, they're going to pick the best actor
07:24for the performance.
07:25So it's a hard work.
07:28It's a little bit of a struggle, but I accept the challenge.
07:31And hopefully Marcus will help that demo rail and say, oh, he can do that too.
07:36Let's give him a shot.
07:36We got one last one, then we'll let you go.
07:39We know you're a busy man.
07:40By the way, don't ever say that you're not good looking.
07:43I put you right there with Cena and Batista.
07:46Come on.
07:48Wait a second.
07:49Wait a second.
07:49Batista and you are similar handsome, handsome, you know, large fellas.
07:56Yeah, but Dave's got the body of a Greek god.
07:58I look like a shaved Yeti.
08:00It's really different.
08:02All right, stay back.
08:04What's the question for Paul that we got to let him go?
08:06Who's the best big man in wrestling history?
08:09Best big man?
08:12Best big man?
08:14I have two.
08:15Outside of yourself.
08:16Outside of yourself.
08:17No, no, no.
08:18I wouldn't even put myself in this category.
08:20That's not my M.O. dude.
08:21But I would say the two best would be Undertaker and Kane, without a doubt.
08:27Just to be around the talent of those, I think Kane's one of the best big men of all time.
08:33Because Kane looks a little bit different character than Undertaker.
08:36Undertaker's a phenom.
08:37There's never anything like Undertaker.
08:39There'll never be anyone like Undertaker who's had that presence and that immortal character.
08:46But the in-ring working and being the big guy and selling and being a heel and all the things that Kane has done.
08:58Like, Kane could work with anyone.
09:00Literally.
09:00Like, that's the thing in wrestling.
09:01You always say, oh, the guy's so good.
09:03He could work with a room stick.
09:04But, you know, Glenn Jacobs can definitely do that.
09:07So, I'll always say Glenn Jacobs is the best big man of all time.
09:10Me personally.
09:11Good question, Standing Meck.
09:13Well, listen.
09:13Good question.
09:15Honestly, Paul, we've been talking a lot to a lot of people.
09:18We've gotten to talk to so many megastars in our time.
09:23But we have been looking forward to talking to you for a long, long time.
09:27So, we're extremely thrilled to have talked to you today.
09:30And, I mean, honestly, you know, the AEW's on fire.
09:34You had a legendary WWE and WCW career.
09:37And the acting is really incredible.
09:40Really solid stuff.
09:42Comedic, dramatic.
09:43Marcus is the name of the film.
09:46And you should be checking your streaming services, your local theaters.
09:51Marcus is the name of the film.
09:52Yeah, Apple, Hulu, all that stuff.
09:55So, anywhere you get your movies, you can find Marcus.
09:58And it's a good film.
10:00It's a very dramatic film.
10:01It's a good film on understanding mental health issues and also the search for hope.
10:07Thank you so much.
10:09Star Wars.
10:11Well, Paul, thank you so much.
10:14You're the man.
10:14We really appreciate it.
10:15Mac, you want to say something to Paul before we go?
10:19Say anything you want?
10:21Say anything you want, Mac.
10:22Just say goodbye, man.
10:24Goodbye.
10:24And check out Marcus.
10:27Good job.
10:28Yes, check out Marcus.
10:29Good job.
10:29See?
10:30He's the real talent, man.
10:31He's the real talent.
10:32Hey, I think your allowance should be raised.
10:34I'm just letting you know.
10:35You should get a bigger allowance.
10:37I'll get your back.
10:38I'll sign the petition.
10:40Thanks, guys.
10:41The great Paul White.
10:43Have a great day.
10:43Thanks, Paul.
10:44Have a great day.
