00:00Russian President Bernie Putin has firmly rejected the unconditional 30-day ceasefire ultimatum issued by Ukraine's Western allies during their visit to Kyiv.
00:18The government of Iran and the United States held on Sunday in the city of Muscat in Oman the fourth round of talks on the Iranian nuclear plant.
00:36Palestinian authorities warn that people in the Gaza Strip are dying of thirst as the Israeli regime keeps restricting access to the vital liquid.
00:48Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Adelsu Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:06Russian President Bernie Putin has firmly rejected the unconditional 30-day ceasefire ultimatum issued by Ukraine's Western allies during their visit to Kyiv.
01:15The European leaders threaten tougher sanctions on Russia if it refuses to the ceasefire.
01:21Putin criticizes the Western demands as ultimatums delivered with rude statements, emphasizing Russia's readiness for serious negotiations.
01:29Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated that Russia would consider ceasefire proposals only if Western military support to Ukraine ceases.
01:37This reflects Moscow's long-held position that peace must be negotiated without preconditions and that Western sanctions and arms deliveries complicate prospects for a genuine ceasefire.
01:49And in this sense, Russian President has proposed receiving direct peace talks with Ukraine on May 15 in Istanbul.
02:01Putin stressed that it was Kyiv that halted the 2022 talks and extended the invitation to Ukraine to restart discussions aimed at eliminating the root causes of the conflict and achieving a long-standing stable peace.
02:11In this context, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is resistant to external pressure and that while Putin supports the idea of a ceasefire in principle, the recent Western proposal contains many unresolved questions.
02:26Despite everything, we propose the Kiev authorities resume the negotiations, they interrupted, at the end of 2022, to resume direct negotiations, and, I emphasize, without any preconditions.
02:46We propose to begin without delay next Thursday, May 15, in Istanbul, where they were held earlier, and where they were interrupted.
03:01We are committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine.
03:05Their purpose is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict, to establish a long-term, lasting peace for the historical perspective.
03:13We do not rule out that during these negotiations it will be possible to agree on some new truces, a new ceasefire.
03:22The 80th anniversary of the end of World War II was celebrated all over the world, with the biggest ceremony held in Moscow, where the date is called Victory Day.
03:41The celebration brought together generations in history and geography, where Russian citizens remembered their ancestors, while grandchildren, historic European figures called for peace,
03:51details from our Special Envoy Yunus Sunner from Moscow.
03:55The Soviet Union lost 27 million citizens in the Great Patriotic War against Nazi Germany, and the fallen were present both on picture and in hearts on Moscow streets on May 9.
04:11Today, for the 8th anniversary of the victory for me, it is a great pride to be here, because all my great-grandfathers participated in the Great Patriotic War.
04:21They were all decorated with several orders, and I, as their great-granddaughter, with their eyes, will see this incredible celebration.
04:36Russian citizens remembering their grandfathers were joined by others.
04:40Charles de Gaulle was the French general who led his countries fight against Germany in World War II, becoming the first head of provisional government in France after liberation from fascism.
04:51It's important for me to be here, as the grandson of Charles de Gaulle, to celebrate the end of the Second World War and the 80th birthday, also to remember and tell that Russia paid the heaviest tribute for the freedom of the world against the Nazis.
05:13Already a legion during the war, his grandfather became president later again, standing for a French policy independent from the U.S. during the Cold War.
05:22I'm also here to celebrate the Franco-Russian friendship. It was one of the pillars of the policy of my grandfather. It's important if you want to make peace.
05:34Another European guest in the celebrations was Alexander von Bismarck. He is the grand-nephew of Otto von Bismarck, who, as chancellor in late 19th century, united Germany.
05:46From a German perspective, this is the first time I witnessed May 9 here in Moscow, and that was very moving and emotional.
05:59I think we can provide the younger generation some insight, because we don't learn in school what that all means.
06:10This wasn't only the victory over the Nazis, it was also the victory for peace.
06:19His grandfather was chancellor between 1871 and 1890, dominating European politics with his policy of balance and his international congresses such as the Berlin Conference.
06:31The name Otto von Bismarck stands continent-wide famously for the merit of diplomacy.
06:38Russia has always told us to construct the European peace order together.
06:46But we ignored that. And now we face the consequences in the conflict in Ukraine.
06:54That was a fatal mistake.
06:59Moscow's Victory Day celebrations and humanity's desire for peace brought together families and memories over generations and borders.
07:08A truly historic May 9, 2025.

07:23We're going to be right back. Stay with us.
07:25Welcome back. The governments of Iran and the United States held Sunday in the city of Muscat in Oman, the fourth round of talks on the Iranian nuclear plan.
07:51Under Oman's mediation, the latest U.S.-Iran talks have proceeded without a clear solution to the conflict, as Iran assures that it will not give up its nuclear rights,
08:00while Washington has reiterated that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons, so its enrichment facilities must be dismantled.
08:06The latest gathering, headed by White House Special Envoy for the Middle East, Stephen Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Arakshi,
08:13was addressed by the Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman as difficult but useful to better understand each other's positions and to find reasonable and realistic ways to address differences.
08:28I can say that compared to the three previous rounds, the negotiations were much more serious and straightforward.
08:37We've, to a large extent, moved away from general discussions and gotten into more detailed matters.
08:44Naturally, this makes the negotiations even more difficult.
08:51From our perspective, uranium enrichment is something that absolutely must continue, and there's no room for compromise about that.
09:02We may consider limitations on its dimensions, scope, level, and amount for a certain period to build confidence, as we did in the agreement, but the principle of enrichment itself is not even negotiable.
09:17In other topics, the White House announced Sunday that it has reached a trade agreement with China and talks held this weekend in the Swiss city of Geneva.
09:27U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant said both sides made substantial progress in the all-important trade talks.
09:33Besant added that more information would be disclosed on Monday, and that President Trump was fully informed of the developments.
09:39White House trade representative, Jameson Greer, described the two days of negotiations as very constructive.
09:46Palestinian authorities warned that people in the Gaza Strip are dying of thirst, as the Israeli regime keeps restricting access to the vital liquid.
10:14In this regard, the Palestinian Water Authority issued an urgent humanitarian appeal alerting that 2.3 million residents are currently deprived of access to the minimum amount of water required for survival.
10:24Furthermore, in the appeal, the authority unveiled that water extraction in Gaza has declined by 80 percent since October 2023, while water consumption has dropped to 3 to 5 liters per person per day, far below the emergency minimum of 15 liters established by the World Health Organization.
10:41In this context, the body accused Israel of committing a systematic war crime by using thirst and starvation as tools of genocide.
10:48In Palestine, the Israeli occupation army intensified on Saturday its aggression by demolishing residential homes in Nur Shams refugee camp in northwestern West Bank.
11:05Palestinian sources confirmed that occupation forces detonated three homes in the Alman Shia neighborhood, bringing the total number of buildings destroyed by Israeli forces in the last week alone to 15.
11:16These demolitions are part of a wider systematic campaign by the occupation to erase entire neighborhoods within the camp as part of a plan announced 10 days ago to demolish 106 buildings in Nur Shams and Tulkarem refugee camps.
11:31This campaign has already begun a large-scale humanitarian crisis with more than 4,200 Palestinian families forcibly displaced, while more than 400 houses have been completely crushed and another 2,573 have suffered damage.

12:05Welcome back.
12:23Uruguay regional and local elections move forward this Sunday, polling stations open at 8 a.m. local time, with more than 2.7 million voters summoned to elect 19 governors,
12:33589 city councilors, 136 majors and 544 municipal councilors.
12:39Likewise, 19 departmental tendencies were presented, with 147 candidates for 7 political parties.
12:46On the other hand, 1.9 million Uruguayans will be able to decide on the majors of 136 municipalities, 11 more than in the elections of 2020.
12:56And Venezuelans took part on Saturday of an electoral drill ahead of the regional and national elections of May 25th.
13:06Electoral authorities described the drill as highly successful.
13:09The National Electoral Council summoned citizens to participate in the democratic exercise with the objective of finalizing voters with the system.
13:16This drill allowed the testing of the voting machines, checking the effectiveness of the transmission media, and evaluating the technical operation and logistics of the procedure.
13:31Meanwhile, in Ecuador, in the midst of a political crisis due to accusations of electoral fraud against President Daniel Novoa,
13:37the National Electoral Council sworn in several Assembly members elected to the Andean Parliament.
13:42Let's see more details with our colleague, Gabriel Amena.
13:46During an official ceremony attended by more than 400 guests,
13:53the Ecuadorian National Electoral Council installed 15 National Assembly members, 19 for the province of Pechincha,
14:00five representatives of the Andean Parliament and six representatives from abroad.
14:04To the elected authorities who received their credentials, we present our most extensive congratulations.
14:13You have been chosen by the people to legislate with responsibility and work with the state with the trust placed in each one of you,
14:24but it is also a call of commitment to public ethics and community service.
14:28May this symbolic act mark the beginning of a new stage of work.
14:32The Assemblymen elected by the Citizens' Revolution made statements on who they will nominate from their party for the presidency of the Assembly.
14:46They affirm that the Citizens' Revolution has the capacity to preside over the Parliament.
14:51In the National Assembly she has fulfilled the expectations,
14:56I believe that Assemblywoman Viviana Velos is a great option, at least from the Citizens' Revolution.
15:01We hope that on the 14th we will have the votes that will decide if it is on the side of the government
15:06or if it is on the side of the people and the citizens to have an assembly with a president who can respond.
15:14We as a bench are working on a legislative agenda and evidently we have ratified precisely what we have always said,
15:22that the doors are open to dialogue for all those spaces where we can reach a programmatic agenda.
15:29They also announced that they are not closed to dialogue with other benches, but as long as it is to strengthen the country and not the elites.
15:39Among the points they will promote in the Assembly will be the promotion of human rights projects,
15:44strengthening of employment and entrepreneurship, as well as security,
15:47but they rejected the incorporation of foreign personnel in this area.
15:50We must of course generate all the guarantees to strengthen security beyond the fact that my criteria,
16:00and that of many Assembly members is an issue that corresponds more to the executive,
16:04which is the one in charge of executing, as its name says and of course to be absolutely vigilant of all the processes that are being carried out.
16:11Let us remember that the function of the Assembly members is to legislate, but also to supervise.
16:18For several legislators from different benches, something that worries them is that the mother of President Daniel Noboa, Annabel Azzin,
16:29is designated as the President of the Assembly, this because the ruling party has added allies.
16:34Point that for several analysts would limit fiscal control.
16:37Then his mother going to the presidency of course, in a monarch political organization that's fine, but not in the Republic.
16:46And of course, the first thing people say is how is a mother going to oversee her son?
16:51I could say they are two different people but no no they are family.
16:56Meanwhile, what is a fact for now is that the elected assembly for the period 2025-2029 is ready to begin its own.
17:06functions after taking office this Wednesday, May 14, during this first session of the Parliament,
17:11which will begin at 10 o'clock in the morning as determined by the legislative law and 151 assembly members will participate.
17:18More than 77 votes are required to appoint the President and Vice President of the Assembly.
17:27In our news, voting ended in Albania's parliamentary election this Sunday.
17:32The campaign was dominated by the country's efforts to join the European Union.
17:36Polls closed at 7 pm local time and vote counting is expected to conclude within 48 hours.
17:41Because of mass immigration, the country, of 2.8 million people, has about 3.7 million eligible voters.
17:49For the first time, those in the diaspora could vote, casting their ballots by mail.
17:53Voters were elected in 140 lawmakers to four-year terms, choosing from 2,046 candidates representing 11 political groupings.
18:02Preliminary turnout at 6 pm local time was 41.37 percent, 5 percent higher than it was in 2021.
18:11On Sunday, many countries around the world hold commemorative events to celebrate Mother's Day.
18:30On this day, relatives dedicated the day to their mothers to honor them and to thank them for the acts of love and care for their families.
18:38Yet not all countries celebrate Mother's Day on the same day due to differences in culture and traditions.
18:43In the Americas, countries like Chile, Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia and Brazil have adopted the festivity on the second Sunday of May.
18:50In the context of Mother's Day, through his Telegram account, Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel wished a happy day to all Cuban mothers, masters of everyday life, who create and sustain life with the passion and beauty of artists.
19:08Thank you for so much. A big hug for you.
19:11Also, the President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, threw a message on his Telegram account, said the following.
19:23Mother's Day is a day of memories, feelings, gratitude, emotions and family reunion.
19:28We must defend our mother as one would defend the most precious thing.
19:32Let us defend the family as one would defend one's homeland.
19:35To those whose mothers are alive, take care of her.
19:38Take care of her, visit her, be with her, respect her, love her.
19:42And to those of us whose mothers have passed, let us always remember her.
19:46Let us raise a prayer for them.
19:48I send you all my love, admiration and infinite gratitude.
19:57For her part, Mexican President Clara Sheinbaum praised the work of Mexican mothers and sent a commemorative message on this day.
20:04On this Mother's Day, I want to send a very affectionate and heartfelt greeting message and a very strong hug to all Mexican mothers.
20:16To tell them that we love them, that we value the work they do every day.
20:19And to the family, that we must take care of our mothers.
20:23Mothers not only take care of us, we must also take care of our mothers.
20:27We must support them.
20:28House showers are not only a woman's responsibility.
20:31It concerns every member of the family.
