00:00Gifts and charisms. What are the gifts?
00:16The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are
00:20wisdom, understanding, counsel, strength, knowledge, piety, and fear of the Lord.
00:34What are gifts?
00:36The gifts are exquisite instruments through which the Holy Spirit acts directly in men
00:43carrying out the heavenly work.
00:46The gifts of the Holy Spirit are divine receivers, prodigious receivers
00:53to capture the inspirations of the Divine Spirit.
00:58The gifts of the Holy Spirit are those supernatural realities
01:02that God has chosen to place in our soul so that we can receive the inspirations of the Paraclete.
01:11The gifts of the Holy Spirit not only allow us to receive His divine illuminations,
01:17but also His impulses so that we move under the influence of the Spirit of God.
01:24From these motions we can draw wonderful conclusions,
01:31Because if the Holy Spirit moves us and our actions are done under His immediate influence,
01:39It is natural that our actions have truly divine characteristics.
01:45Each of the gifts of the Holy Spirit has its purpose and they manifest themselves according to God's will.
01:53and our mission in the church.
01:57We receive them in the sacrament of baptism, along with virtues and grace.
02:03The acts that proceed from the gifts have a divine seal, the seal of the Holy Spirit.
02:12an entirely celestial mode.
02:18An important clarification: the rules for gifts are different from the rules for virtues.
02:26Therefore, when we act under the influence of these latter factors,
02:31We certainly have a supernatural norm, but an imperfect one.
02:37since it is the norm of the man enlightened by the light of God.
02:42In contrast, when one acts under the influence of the gifts of the Holy Spirit,
02:48The rule is the same as God's, shared with man.
02:52The great news is that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are not exclusive to or belonging to the saints.
03:03We all have them if we are baptized.
03:06We simply need to have God's grace in our souls to receive them.
03:13On the day of our baptism, we received the gifts of the Holy Spirit,
03:19together with virtues and grace.
03:22Now that we know this truth, some questions arise whose answers we must know.
03:31How do the gifts of the Holy Spirit develop within us?
03:36What can and should we do to ensure that these instruments used by the Holy Spirit are used
03:42for our sanctification to reach its full development within us?
03:48In the beginning, three things must be done.
03:51Number one, increase charity in our hearts,
03:56because the root of all gifts is charity.
04:00Number two, to develop virtues within ourselves,
04:05instruments of our spiritual work.
04:07Number three, be docile to the inspirations of the Spirit.
04:14This way we can better hear God's voice.
04:17And what are charisms?
04:21Cardinal Suenens gives us a very valuable description of these.
04:28Charisms are gifts of the Holy Spirit
04:31distinguished by their visibility and community purpose
04:37with a view to building the kingdom of God.
04:41In the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen Gentium, in number 12,
04:49He describes the following.
04:52Charisms are special graces with which the Holy Spirit
04:58It makes the faithful of every order fit and ready.
05:02to undertake various works and services that are useful for the growth of the Church.
05:09Father Emiliano Tardif, of Happy Memory, describes the following to us.
05:17Charisms are ministerial gifts that give a very special strength to evangelization.
05:26They are also special spiritual gifts that the Lord gives us
05:31to build the community, to build the Church.
05:35A charism, Saint Paul tells us, is an outward manifestation of the Holy Spirit.
05:44The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit are the source and root of all charisms.
05:50The Catechism of the Catholic Church, in section 799, defines charisms as follows:
05:58extraordinary or simple and humble.
06:03Charisms are gifts from the Holy Spirit,
06:06that have a direct or indirect ecclesial use.
06:11The charisms are ordered to the building up of the Church,
06:16for the good of men and the needs of the world.
06:20We can then conclude that the gifts of the Holy Spirit
06:28These are the fundamental tools we need to be moved by God
06:34and that charisms are the multiple ways in which gifts manifest themselves
06:40visibly to carry out the different services that God entrusts to us
06:46For the edification of the Church and virtues are the initiatives of man
06:52through spiritual work in their lives, producing fruits with their labor.
07:00Let's now look at the discernment of charisms.
07:05For this reason, the discernment of charisms always appears necessary.
07:11No charisma dispenses with reference and submission
07:14to the pastors of the Church.
07:18It is their responsibility above all not to quench the spirit,
07:22but examining everything and keeping what is good,
07:27so that all charisms may cooperate in their diversity
07:31and complementarity to the common good.
07:37The virtues.
07:38The theological virtues: faith, hope, and charity,
07:45were infused by God into our soul on the day of baptism.
07:51Let's talk about virtues in general.
07:54Virtues are not something you put on,
07:59nor a degree,
08:01Even virtue is not a natural gift we are born with,
08:06Because if that were the case, it wouldn't be a virtue.
08:09However, it must be clarified that in human nature
08:13There is a disposition and capacity for virtue.
08:19which facilitates their acquisition
08:22when the appropriate means are put in place.
08:25Virtue is a habitual disposition of man
08:30acquired through repeated exercise
08:34and to act consciously and freely in order to achieve perfection or good.
08:41For virtue to be a virtue, it must be habitual.
08:46and not an isolated, sporadic act.
08:51It's like second nature when it comes to acting, thinking, reacting, and feeling.
09:00The opposite of virtue is vice.
09:04which is also a habit acquired through the repetition of acts contrary to good.
09:12Let's look at the theological virtues.
09:15We mentioned that there are three: faith, hope, and charity.
09:23They were infused by God into our souls on the day of our baptism,
09:29But like a seed that had to be nurtured through our efforts,
09:35prayer and sacrifice.
09:37End of the theological virtues.
09:42God gave us these virtues so that we may be able to act in a divine manner.
09:49That is, as children of God,
09:52and thus counteract the natural impulses inclined towards selfishness, comfort, and pleasure.
09:58Characteristics of the theological virtues.
10:05They are gifts from God, not conquests or fruits of man.
10:12However, they require our free and conscious collaboration
10:17so that they may improve and grow.
10:21They are not theoretical virtues, but a way of being and living.
10:25The three virtues always go together.
