00:00Hello, how are you? Welcome to this first video of the Pedagogy and Group Leadership course.
00:14As part of the diploma course being offered by the brothers of San Juan,
00:18I invite you to take this opportunity to reflect.
00:22and that we can develop some of the skills they surely already have,
00:26But this course will encourage us to develop these skills in a better way.
00:35First of all, let me introduce myself. My name is Javier García, and I am a friend of the brothers of San Juan.
00:40I am a husband, I am a father, I am Lucero's husband, I am Rogelio's dad
00:45and I already have 20 years of experience in the world of education.
00:49I have worked as a high school teacher and as a professor in postgraduate studies at the university.
00:55I am an engineer by profession, I have a master's degree in education, and a master's degree in administration.
01:01and a doctorate in educational sciences.
01:04But more than that, the experience, everything we've lived through, and what we've been able to learn along the way.
01:11I think it helps us to be able to share a little bit of this experience in this course.
01:16What are we going to do as part of this diploma course?
01:23Well, this course is divided into four videos, in four parts.
01:27This is the first one.
01:28And we are going to define the basic concepts, the simple definitions perhaps of these two words
01:35which in turn are also quite important.
01:38What is pedagogy and what is leadership.
01:41If we define and understand the importance of these two concepts and how they combine
01:47We've really come a long way, we've won a big part of this course.
01:54The first thing we need to do, and I'll start this with a question, is
01:59What is pedagogy?
02:01What does pedagogy mean to you?
02:03I'll give them three, four, five seconds, what for.
02:09What is pedagogy?
02:11And then the second question is, what is leadership?
02:16What is leadership?
02:20And now, what is the relationship between these two words?
02:23Let's see, let's define each one of them.
02:25First, let's define what pedagogy is.
02:28The word pedagogy comes from the Greek word, padios,
02:31which means child and someone, which means to guide.
02:35What we are going to do is, in pedagogy, it is the guide,
02:39Or it's about showing the way, particularly to children.
02:42Let's say, the origin of this is, taking as a reference point that only children learn,
02:49But we know now that the learning process is a lifelong process,
02:54and it is a process that ends only with death,
02:57that through this learning, well, it is possible for us to develop as human beings.
03:04The purpose of pedagogy, or the goal of this concept, is to support education in all its aspects.
03:15for the improvement of the human being.
03:17Well, look how interesting this definition is, because it talks about two rather interesting words,
03:25Well, three words: education. But then come these two, which are even a little broader.
03:33the improvement.
03:35Notice how people talk about perfection, and we know it's an unattainable concept.
03:44But it's a concept that we're always striving to achieve, isn't it?
03:48We talk about improvement and then about the human being, about the human being.
03:54So, let's imagine the complexity that this entails.
03:57Humans, by definition, are complex beings; they are beings that have,
04:02or that is composed of different areas, and when we talk about the improvement of the human being,
04:07So let's imagine how vast this is, but,
04:10even when it seemed impossible, or unattainable,
04:13Pedagogy invites us to find this,
04:18through this science, which is a multidisciplinary science,
04:21It invites us to seek this improvement.
04:23And when we talk about multidisciplinary science,
04:26This means that it makes use of different branches, of different tools,
04:31from different sciences, which help to make this improvement possible,
04:37or is sought to be achieved.
04:38From psychology, from, perhaps, administrative matters,
04:45more didactic issues, issues of maturity,
04:49It's quite, quite broad.
04:53That's pedagogy too.
04:56The other element that gives this short course its name is leadership.
05:01What is leadership?
05:02Leadership is influence,
05:05It is the influence exerted on other people,
05:08so that they act in the fulfillment of a goal.
05:10That's a definition, perhaps a simple one.
05:13but a definition that encompasses, in general terms,
05:16what leadership is.
05:18It is the influence one has on other people to achieve a goal.
05:25And what is this influence?
05:26This is the guide.
05:28It is done through a guide.
05:29Just as pedagogy is this guide, it is this showing of the way,
05:32Leadership is the effective guide to achieving learning.
05:38If we combine leadership and pedagogy,
05:41So this is the invitation that is extended to the other.
05:45so that he can seek to develop his potential.
05:49Now, what happens?
05:51And that's why I'm showing you this little graphic with these two intertwined circles.
05:55What happens when pedagogy and leadership are combined?
06:01What happens when these two elements, these two concepts,
06:05They intertwine and function like gears,
06:09that function in a linked or, let's say, joint manner,
06:14harmoniously?
06:17When leadership and pedagogy are combined,
06:19What happens is that meaningful learning is obtained.
06:23So, let's pick things up a bit.
06:28We are talking about group management through pedagogy,
06:34through leadership.
06:36By combining these two elements, we obtain meaningful learning.
06:40And what exactly does it mean to achieve meaningful learning?
06:44Meaningful learning establishes relationships with the context
06:50or with, or let's say, the content of what is being taught,
06:54It establishes and links that content to the life experiences of each of the students.
07:04In other words, it gives knowledge a unique meaning for each person.
07:10Why? Because of the baggage that each of us brings,
07:14all the information, all the previous experiences,
07:18combined with new learning,
07:21Well, contextualized learning is generated,
07:25which is meaningful learning.
07:28So, this way of educating, this way of inviting,
07:33This way of relating leadership to pedagogy,
07:36What happens is that it seeks to tailor the information to our group.
07:42And it is important, then, for us as leaders and guides
07:45from a particular group,
07:48getting to know the person who is part of the group.
07:53It is through communication that we can understand
07:58who are we addressing in this way
08:01try to relate their experience, their experiences
08:07and in this way achieve meaningful learning.
08:12This concludes the first part.
08:15This first video, in which I simply recap,
08:19We already have the definition of pedagogy,
08:22the definition of leadership,
08:24What happens when these are combined?
08:26with these meaningful learnings.
08:27And to conclude, I would like to invite you to reflect on this,
08:34We would like a small exercise in which you,
08:37in each of their areas of expertise,
08:39in each of their development contexts,
08:43How would you do it, or how could you combine it?
08:47these pedagogical and leadership elements
08:50And how could they invite a group?
08:55so that they could get to know their world, so to speak.
09:00What would they come up with?
09:03What would you have to be like?
09:05How would they approach a group?
09:07inviting them to develop as individuals
09:10And that they knew what you know?
09:13Thanks a lot.
09:15Let's do this short exercise.
09:16I invite you to continue watching the next three videos.
09:19See you later.
09:20Thank you!
