00:00For many years, it was the Iranian strategy to use proxies and to threat Israel and to harm Israel
00:06throughout proxies. A nuclear weapon in the hand of a regime that officially says that it wants to
00:13wipe out Israel out of the map. Three o'clock a.m. Israeli time, there was a siren that was heard
00:18throughout the country. People were very scared, confused, unaware of what was happening. Israeli
00:24officials keep trying to make things calmer and saying we have the defense systems, we can engage
00:31and intercept whatever it is that the Iranian regime would try to send towards Israel's way.
00:36Well, the United States are still at least formally saying that they hope that even after this attack,
00:43Iran will come to the negotiation. Hello and welcome to this special broadcast on One India.
00:49As the world has come to know now, that Israel launched early attacks on Iran, claiming the
00:57assassination of one of the top military commanders there and also attacking the nuclear installations.
01:04And now, as we speak, Iran is hitting back at Israel with its drones. Earlier on One India,
01:13you would have seen Ehsan Safran Najad, one of the geopolitical analysts from Iran, who spoke and put
01:19their point of view forward that what Iran needs to do now and how political will is important to
01:27drive away the inspectors of IAEA and do what it needs to do with its uranium enrichment and its
01:36subsequent nuclear weapons design and the use also. Now, let's hear it from the Israeli side.
01:45Ilad Sibjayov joins us from UK, London, and Ilad works with Israel's Channel 12 News. He is a senior
01:56journalist there. Ilad, thank you so much for taking out One India.
02:01Of course. Thank you for having me.
02:03Yeah, thanks. Ilad, first things first, could you please bring us up to speed with the situation
02:10in Israel as we speak? Earlier, we mentioned that the airports are closed and in anticipation of
02:18further attacks from Iran, Israel must have prepared and thought over about the reprisal and the blowback.
02:25Most definitely. And you know, the funny thing is, around three o'clock a.m. Israeli time, there was a
02:32siren that was heard throughout the country. People were very scared, confused, unaware of what was
02:39happening. In hindsight, we know that it was the decision of the army of the IDF to alert the citizens
02:47of Israel that something major is happening. Usually, we are accustomed of hearing sirens when an imminent
02:53attack is happening. Here was a completely different scenario. The decision was made to sound the alarms
02:59even before there was a retaliation or attack against Israel to make the civilians aware that
03:06something is happening. So, there's a lot of tension in Israel. There's a lot of concern, obviously.
03:14The way of thinking is that the retaliation will come. We have seen something relatively small in
03:21terms of what Iran is capable of doing. We've seen a hundred or so drones making their way to Israel. I
03:29now see that most of them, if not all of them, were intercepted by Israel midway. So, it's very clear
03:37that this is just the first step of the Iranian retaliation. More to come. So, in that aspect,
03:47you can see that things in Israel are pretty tense. But Israel officials keep trying to make things calmer
03:54and say we have the defense systems. We can engage and intercept whatever it is that the Iranian regime
04:01will try to send towards Israel's way. Right. Help us also understand the exact reasons why Israel would
04:10keep coming back to attacking Iran. We have seen it in the past. Also, past six months have been quite
04:16hectic as far as Iran and Israel are concerned. And many times we have also seen that Iran has delayed
04:24its response to Israeli attacks while it was anticipated. But this time around, they have
04:30retaliated within hours. So, do you believe that the gloves are off and now no diplomatic overtures are
04:38going to play any middle ground, let alone the United States?
04:41Well, the United States are still at least formally saying that they hope that even after this attack,
04:51Iran will come to the negotiation. Well, there are talks that are, at least in my part, I haven't heard
04:58officials saying that it's definitely canceled, although we can presume that it won't go on,
05:04at least not on Sunday, as they should have been. In order to understand what is happening between Israel and
05:10Iran. And I think your viewers, and I'm really thankful for the opportunity to speak to people
05:15in India, because I think you can relate and understand the situation that Israel is in.
05:19Because even though we haven't seen direct conflict between Iran and Israel up until now,
05:26up until October 7th war happened, for many years, it was the Iranian strategy to use proxies
05:33and to threat Israel and to harm Israel throughout proxies. So, we've seen it with Hezbollah
05:38up north in Lebanon, we've seen it to some extent with Hamas in Gaza, we've seen it with the Houthis
05:43in Yemen, we've seen it with forces in Syria and other places as well. They were all Iranian-backed.
05:49So, Israel knew that even though it's engaged in war or waging war against terror organizations,
05:57neighboring terror organizations, the country that was behind it was backing it,
06:03either with money, with knowledge, with arms, that was Iran. It was Iran all along. And ever since
06:10October 7th, things changed. Hamas is much weaker than it was. Hezbollah is much weaker than it was.
06:16So, Iran, to some extent, lost its proxies. And now Iran needed to find a new or upgraded or enhanced
06:25insurance policy for itself. That's why we have been seeing changes in Iranians' nuclear program.
06:31The Israeli officials in the IDF said that Israel has intelligence, that Iran was actually conducting
06:37a secret nuclear program, making their nuclear resources operational. And that's why Israel has
06:46decided now to attack Iran. Israel sees it as a preemptive attack, as an attack of last resort.
06:52And I think it all leads up to the changes that were made in the Middle East and the region
06:59after October 7th. Iran used to use proxies, which are no longer available for its goals and aims.
07:07Right. Since you have mentioned about proxies and several instances where Iran was not directly
07:14involved, I would be taking a small hiatus here from Iran and Israel conflict, what we are talking.
07:23In context with India and Pakistan, we have also had several instances where it was claimed and it was
07:32made clear to the world that, yes, Pakistan is using terror network in order to dismantle and peace
07:40and other infrastructure in India. And then there was a clash also in the last month. United States
07:48jumps into the fray, talks about trade and whatnot, and then tries to convince both the parties not to go
07:55to war. In this scenario, when it comes to Israel, there is no proof being asked. There is no question of trade
08:04barriers. And somehow Israel enjoys the support of United States. So do you see this as a double stand
08:12by United States vis-a-vis India or Iran? Or is it just plain and simple geopolitics playing out that
08:20U.S. stands benefited with friendship with Israel? That's an interesting question, because what I at
08:27least see in the United States reaction to the Israeli attack in Iran is very sophisticated,
08:34because it's at a certain level, we can see the United States President Trump is saying we were
08:41informed. We knew that Israel is about to attack beforehand. We were informed. We were in on it,
08:47at least when it comes to the information. But you see that the United States is distancing itself from
08:54the act itself. The United States is saying we weren't a part of the attack. We didn't engage
09:02in the attack that Israel carried out in Iran. Neither are we planning to do in the future. The
09:10thing that President Trump is saying to that aspect is we will help Israel defend itself. And that sends a
09:17very clear message to Iran. The United States on one hand saying we are willing, we are hopeful to
09:23continue negotiations and to solve this conflict in a in a diplomatical way. That's that's our
09:28aspiration. That's what we want to do. But bear in mind, that's that's exactly the double message that
09:34Trump gives the Iranian regime. If you'll attack Israel and most certainly if you'll attack anything
09:41that has to do with the United States, we will defend ourselves and we will help defend our allies.
09:46So I think that in that aspect, the United States is standing beside Israel. It is letting Israel
09:53do the dirty work, if you would, that carrying the attacks by itself. But it says we will help
10:02Israel defend itself and we are here for negotiations. So I think it's a very interesting approach. And
10:07you're right. It's different than the one that has been taken in the India-Pakistan conflict.
10:12Absolutely, absolutely. And this is something that in this new, you know, dimensional world,
10:21post Israel, Gaza and Ukraine and Russia war. Now, a lot of things gain a lot of significance also
10:29there. One final question, Elad. Obviously, I was speaking to Insan Safar Nejad, the geopolitical
10:36analyst from Iran. And he said that on one hand, as you mentioned, the talks are between US and Iran
10:43are going on in Oman. And on the other, US is helping Israeli jets refuel midair to carry out
10:51long distance attacks in Iran. In such a scenario, given the relations between India and Israel and
11:01India and the United States and several other countries, do you believe that Israel runs a risk
11:10of getting alienated just being friends with the United States? Will this have any sort of reprisal on
11:19Israel? That's an interesting question. I think it's left to be seen. I think that Israel understands
11:25that when it comes to Iran, there's a clear understanding, even in the region, in the Middle
11:31East, that Iran is a destructive player and a dangerous player in the Middle East. So I think
11:37that while we heard criticism towards Israel, when it comes to Gaza, when it comes to the war against
11:44Hamas, even to some extent, when it came to the war against Hezbollah in Lebanon, I think that it's very
11:50clear that there is a consensus that Iran could not and must not have any nuclear capabilities,
11:55let alone a nuclear arsenal of weapons. So I think in that aspect, Israel is taking a risk
12:02to some extent. But I don't think this has the potential of annihilating Israel. I think that
12:09it's very clear, and correct me if I'm wrong, I think that most people in India will agree that a nuclear
12:15weapons in the hand of a regime that officially says that it wants to wipe out Israel out of the
12:21map. It's something that we cannot live with. It's a threat. It's an existential threat for Israel
12:27that we cannot allow. And I think that in that aspect, there's a wide consensus throughout the
12:32world that something needs to be done. And President Trump tried and maybe is still trying to solve this
12:39problem diplomatically. But we've seen the talks are carried on. We've heard President Trump just
12:44saying in the past few days that he no longer thinks that a diplomatical solution is visible,
12:52is viable in the near future. So I think to that extent, countries and peoples and leaders will
12:59acknowledge and understand and appreciate that Israel has to defend its own and has to do something
13:06in order to make sure the Iranian regime will not have nuclear capabilities.
13:11Absolutely, Ilad. And this actually brings us to this conclusive part. Remember what happened in
13:19Iraq. The world came to know about this term called WMD, weapons of mass destruction. And many now admit,
13:27including many in the United States, that the US went on a wild goose chase as far as the Iraqi regime
13:35was concerned and they wiped it out. And then rest is history. In case of Iran, we have seen so many
13:44efforts being made, be it the Paris Accord, be it Barack Obama's efforts to bring Iran to the talking
13:51table, then Donald Trump revoking it, then again, starting chats in Oman. Do you believe that Iran is best
13:59left to their own? As far as the proxies are concerned, then Israel has been fighting this war
14:06for the longest period of time, be it up north in Lebanon, as you mentioned, then Gaza, then Houthis,
14:12then Yemen and whatnot. But my point here is that in such a scenario, do you believe that Israel should
14:20be rather working on its own rather than involving United States? Because we have seen it in the past that
14:28United States joins the party, disrupts everything, and then leaves also leaving the parties in tatters.
14:37Yeah, I absolutely agree. And you know, we've seen attempts in history to dismantle
14:42countries from nuclear arms or change regimes and bring democracy or liberal values or Western values
14:49or whatnot to countries. And we saw how it backfired. I don't think that Israel's aim in Iran, that might be
14:58a positive byproduct if the Iranian people will revolt and the regime will be changed. That's not
15:06Israel's aim. And I think it's not by chance that you saw that Israel was attacking the very senior
15:14levels of the military and the revolutionary guard. No government official or no regime official was
15:21targeted in that attack. So I think Israel is making the clear distinction between the military arm and
15:27the government arm of Iran. And I think that in that aspect, Israel would have loved to see a wider
15:34coalition. Definitely the United States with its capabilities, Israel would have very much wanted
15:42to see the Americans being more aggressive and maybe even joining the attack or maybe even leading the
15:47attack against Iran. But when it comes to the point where you understand as a country that there's
15:52a force threatening your existence, and it might have the most destructive, destructive weapon in
16:01history in its arms. And you see that the other countries are not willing to do what you feel like
16:07you must do. So I think Israel reached a point where it just didn't have any other option. I am very
16:14uplifted hearing President Trump saying that he would stand with Israel and defend Israel, because
16:19you can't even take that for granted. But most definitely, there was a cooperation between the
16:23countries. And even if the United States was not a part of the attack, they have been communicating,
16:30that's for sure. And I think that Israel took the risk of saying, we prefer doing this attack
16:36and defending ourselves by ourselves rather than not doing anything or letting Iran keep going towards
16:42the bomb. Because again, we've seen a report from the International Commission of Nuclear Arms,
16:46seeing a report just in the past few days of them saying that Iran has breached the agreements
16:52and is racing towards a nuclear bomb. When you reach this point of level, when there's no return,
17:00something must be done. And I think that the Israeli officials just reached a conclusion that
17:05if they won't act now, it will be too late.
17:08Absolutely. It takes a lot of courage also to stick your neck out and also put your country
17:14online when it comes to actually defending your borders and your
17:21integral rights for freedom and peace. Elad, thank you so much. We wish you and your country all the very
17:29best. And thank you for speaking to One India. And we will keep coming back to you to discuss further
17:36details as and when there are developments. Gladly. Thank you very much for having me. Thanks.
