00:00:00Hello friends, I'm Pastor Joel Aswell. I welcome you to our study here. We're getting back
00:00:22into Daniel chapter 8. Wonderful things we're learning. Just wonderful. And of course that's
00:00:26just my opinion. But I hope that's your opinion as well. That you're learning wonderful things
00:00:31here that are for us who live here down at the time of the end. That's why I have entitled
00:00:37this entire series of studies in the Daniel, the book of Revelation, the time of the end.
00:00:44Daniel has shared with us that we are actually living in the time of the end. We've learned
00:00:50that so far in our studies. We're in Daniel chapter 8. We're going to get back into that
00:00:55and break it apart line upon line, precept upon precept as the Bible tells us. Seeing things
00:01:04in context, reasoning with the Holy Spirit who's leading us into the truth. And I hope
00:01:12that you come to see these things as a tremendous blessing that the Lord has protected for each
00:01:22one of us. And he wants us to know these things so we'll be prepared for what's coming upon
00:01:26the world and then see Jesus come in the clouds a second time. Before we get into our study,
00:01:32let's have a word of prayer. If you can kneel, let's kneel together. If you cannot kneel,
00:01:38you've heard me say before, prayer is not posture. Old Pastor Brooks used to say that quite a lot.
00:01:42Prayer is not posture. It comes from the heart. And so let's bow our hearts and our heads
00:01:48together here and seek the Lord. Father in heaven, we thank you so much that you are our
00:01:54father. We praise your name. We are so thankful that you are a God of justice, that you love
00:02:01judgment, and that you are merciful. You are indeed love. You sent your son here not just to come and
00:02:09become like one of us to die for us so we may be saved, but to show us your true character of love.
00:02:14You poured out all heaven for our salvation to redeem us. What more do we need to see to know that
00:02:23you love us? We are so thankful for thee, Father. We praise your name. We're thankful for the Holy
00:02:29Spirit. We pray the Holy Spirit be poured out upon each and every one of us who are studying your word,
00:02:34who want to know the truth, who want to be prepared for what's coming, to have that peace of heart,
00:02:41no matter what we see happening in the world, that have that peace that passes understanding.
00:02:48We pray for that, Father. We can rest in Jesus as we see these things happening.
00:02:57Father, we thank you for Jesus who did choose to come and die a death that we deserve because of our
00:03:04sins. We claim the blood that he shed for our sins. We ask forgiveness for our sins. Help us to have
00:03:11the strength and the character development to overcome all sins. May we reach that point of
00:03:19love for thee that we would rather die than sin against you. We thank you, Lord, for your Holy Word.
00:03:28We pray that you help us to understand it as we open it now, specifically into the book of Daniel in
00:03:34chapter 8. I pray that you give me the words to speak here this morning. And Father, be with those
00:03:41around the world who are suffering, those who are dealing with tragedies. May you fill their hearts
00:03:48with peace with peace and they come to know thee before mercy ends. I pray this in the name of Jesus,
00:03:58who is so worthy to be praised. Amen and Amen.
00:04:04Well, friends, we are in Daniel chapter 8 and we are in this series of studies of Daniel chapter 8 that I
00:04:18have entitled The Desolator. The Desolator. This is episode 6. I don't know if too many of you
00:04:27realize that it took us 41 studies to get through Daniel 7. I don't think it's going to take us that
00:04:34many to get through Daniel 8 because Daniel 7 actually laid out a lot of the foundation for
00:04:38Daniel 8. So see, we don't have to go through that many studies, but you learn every time we study. So
00:04:44I praise the Lord for that. But at the beginning of our last study, I shared 40 points, kind of like
00:04:49a summary of points that we'd learned from the first eight verses of Daniel chapter 8. And then we went on
00:04:55in our study last time, we learned 12 more points from Daniel 8 verses 9 through 12. And I want to share
00:05:01those 12 things, those summary of things that we learned, those points that we learned, I want to
00:05:07share them with you now, kind of to get the ball rolling, refresh our minds a little bit here. We
00:05:13learned that the little horn in chapter 7 is actually the same entity as the little horn in
00:05:18chapter 8. We learned that Anticus Epiphanes is not the little horn of Daniel 8 or Daniel 7. We looked at
00:05:27that Anticus was merely one of the line of kings. He wasn't a separate kingdom. We found that Anticus
00:05:34didn't wax exceeding great. He wasn't even the strongest of the Seleucid section of Alexander's kingdom.
00:05:41We found that Anticus didn't wax exceeding great towards the south. If you remember, he met a Roman
00:05:51emissary there as he's heading to Egypt and he drew a circle around Anticus and said, you need to leave
00:05:58and I'll leave you in this circle to consider that. And Anticus fled. He didn't proceed.
00:06:06He didn't wax exceeding great to the east. In fact, that's where he died, was trying to head to the east.
00:06:13We also learned that Anticus did not stand up against Jesus, who's described by Daniel as the prince of the
00:06:19host because he died 164 years before Jesus was here. And so Anticus Epiphanes does not fit, and there
00:06:29are other things. We don't need to go through so many things when two or three show that there's no
00:06:35way that he could be it. Why waste our time with that? That's the preterist view anyway, this false
00:06:44view. It was used to point people away from the truth of God's word and pointing out who the
00:06:50little horn power is, this desolator. We also learned that Rome grew exceeding great towards
00:06:57the south, the east, and Israel. It was Rome. It wasn't Anticus Epiphanes. We learned that an army
00:07:04is given to Rome to fight vertically against the host of heaven. And the host of heaven, we learn,
00:07:12means God's people, the saints of God. We also learned that the stars spoken of there by Daniel
00:07:21represent the officers and the leaders of the saints of God. We learned that Jesus is the prince of the
00:07:29host. He's the head of the church. He's the head of the saints. He's the leader of the leaders,
00:07:35isn't he? We learned in our last study that Rome, excuse me, Rome fights against the prince of the
00:07:44host by persecuting his leaders and his saints. We also learned that Rome tramples upon the truth
00:07:52of Jesus's ministry, especially involving his ministry in the most holy place in the day of
00:07:58atonement. We'll find out more about that as we go on, more and more about that. It'll be very clear,
00:08:05very clear that this is what is going on by this little horn power. We also learned that papal Rome
00:08:12claims the prerogatives of God in assuming the role of Jesus as high priest in forgiving
00:08:19humanity their sins and granting salvation. Who gets saved? Who doesn't get saved? We learned that
00:08:29the word for daily here is tamed, which simply means something which goes on continuously without
00:08:37interruption. And then we also learned that the word tamed is accompanied by the definite article
00:08:44the, it is the daily, ha tamed, which the little horn takes away. Those are the things we learned
00:08:54in episode 5. Now let's get into this set of studies here, or this study in particular, episode 6,
00:09:04part 6 of Daniel 8. Let's read about this little horn again. Let's look at Daniel 8, verses 11 and 12.
00:09:14Daniel 8, verses 11 and 12. Quote, Yea, and speaking of this little horn, he magnified himself
00:09:21even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice, that word sacrifice we know and
00:09:30we'll see again is added. By him the daily was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary, that's the
00:09:37prince of the host, was cast down. Verse 12. And a host was given him against the
00:09:44daily, sacrificed by reason of transgression, rebellion, iniquity, you could say, and it cast
00:09:54down the truth to the ground, and it practiced and prospered. Well, we left off our last study by
00:10:02asking a question about tamed, the daily. The question was, what does the daily mean?
00:10:09What is being spoken of here when it talks about the continuous, the daily? What's going
00:10:15on here? Well, there are three primary views, really, concerning the daily. The first view
00:10:26is that it refers to the removal of the daily sacrifice in the literal Jerusalem temple by
00:10:36Antiochus Epiphanes in 167 to 164 BC. And this view was predominant by Christianity, and it
00:10:46was taught by Christianity for a number of years, because it is part of that counter-reformation
00:10:53preterist view, you see. But it was taught primarily and predominantly leading up to 1844 AD.
00:11:01Then we start to see changes, because God laid out his truth, what happened in 1844 AD. And
00:11:09so we ruled this view out as Antiochus Epiphanes cannot fulfill the prophecy at all. And like
00:11:17I said, this is the preterist view. It's seldom been held by Adventists, except by a handful of
00:11:23scholars like Desmond Ford or Raymond Cottrell. And you don't want to read any of these guys'
00:11:29writings. They'll lead you completely off the trail. Just a little heads up on that.
00:11:34A second view is that it refers to the continuance of paganism. Now, according to this view, the
00:11:43taking away of the daily represents the removal of the continuance of paganism by the papacy.
00:11:51They removed paganism, but did they really remove paganism? But, you know, described in 2 Thessalonians
00:11:58chapter 2. This is what they used to say this primarily. In other words, in the year 508 AD,
00:12:08paganism was ended, and as a result, the papacy was able to rise to power. That's this view.
00:12:15And as I mentioned before, this actually was my understanding for several years.
00:12:20I taught it. I wrote Bible studies about it. But I still continue to look at it objectively. And I encourage
00:12:28all of us to keep our minds open. There are some things that are settled truth. The Sabbath truth is a
00:12:37settled truth. But there are some things, especially when we talk about prophecy, we need to look at it
00:12:43objectively. We need to have a teachable spirit. And so, I prayed to have a teachable spirit, always.
00:12:52And after years of study and further consideration, I believe the 2 Thessalonians is referring to the
00:13:00removal of the ruling empire, the Roman empire, imperial Rome, which in turn allowed the papacy to
00:13:06begin its period of domination. However, this is what I found out and I learned, friends. If I can
00:13:13learn, anybody can learn. Let me tell you. I'm just an old Hoosier hick. If God can teach me these
00:13:19things, He can teach anybody. I've come to the conclusion that the emphasis of 2 Thessalonians
00:13:26chapter 2 should not be imposed on the prophecy of Daniel 8. You see, each passage has its own
00:13:35particular emphasis. And I'll say more about that in just a moment. But some, like I did, they
00:13:44follow the King James Version, and also the New King James Version translation, really, which
00:13:50gives the impression that the daily was taken away by the prince of the host. You see, in
00:13:58this view, Jesus took away paganism to give way to the papacy. But I tucked that back in
00:14:05my mind. There was always something about it that, and I praise the Holy Spirit because,
00:14:10you know, sometimes you look at things, you come to a conclusion, but then there's something
00:14:16in the back of your mind that says, well, you know, I may not be so sure about that. Hang
00:14:20on to that. I don't know if you have experienced that, but I have. And I think that's part of
00:14:26having a teachable spirit. And all Christians should have a teachable spirit. Let the Holy
00:14:32Spirit teach you. Let the Bible speak for itself. And so that's what I always try to do. And
00:14:39so eventually, I came across some scholars that had proven, believe me, I didn't just take
00:14:46one or two, but I went through it, and it came back out. It fits like a puzzle piece. And
00:14:53I just kind of went, wow, yes. I came across scholars that had proven that the phrase should
00:15:01not read, by him the daily was taken away, but rather, from him the daily was taken away.
00:15:09And this makes a huge difference. A huge difference.
00:15:14Let me share this with you. Frank Holbrook has this in his symposium on Daniel, pages 404 and
00:15:27408. Listen to what Holbrook says about this, and I hope it helps you to have a right understanding
00:15:39about this as well. He says, quote, literally, the second clause in verse 11 reads, and from
00:15:46him was taken away the continuance. Every part of this clause poses difficulties. It does.
00:15:55To the scholar and to, you know, if you're studying, you go, something about this just doesn't seem
00:16:00right. But he says it. Every part of this clause poses difficulties. The Hebrew, excuse me, the Hebrew
00:16:09expression, the menu, is not to be translated by him, but from him. Who is the antecedent of
00:16:18him? Grammatically, the nearest and most natural antecedent is the prince of the host. This is
00:16:26supported in the ancient versions. I found that to be true. We have noted that Daniel
00:16:328, 11, part A refers to the self-exaltation of the little horn power, even to the heavenly
00:16:39prince of the host. In verses 11, part B, the statement is made that from him, Miminu, that
00:16:48is, from the heavenly prince of the host, the tamed was taken away. This indicates, pay attention
00:16:58here, he says, this indicates that the tamed, the continuance that goes on without interruption,
00:17:04is something which belongs to the heavenly prince, end quote. That's an incredible statement. And
00:17:12there are several others, but I just wanted to share that one. There are several other scholars who
00:17:17came to the same conclusion. Linguistic scholars in the Hebrew. The correct translation of the
00:17:28preposition, Miminu, is found, for example, in the New American Standard Bible. Notice how
00:17:35it puts it. Now, what they're saying in this translation isn't completely accurate as to
00:17:41what Daniel was putting forth, but look at the translation is what I'm saying. It, the little
00:17:47horn, even magnified itself to be equal with the commander of the host. And notice it says,
00:17:53and it removed the regular sacrifice from him. You see, they get that part right. From him. And
00:18:01the place of his sanctuary was thrown down. Now, that makes a big difference when you're talking
00:18:08about 2 Thessalonians 2. And I'll tell you why Adventists, you know, sometimes we get these
00:18:18teachings in Adventism, and we just, we put all of our weight on those. We consider them
00:18:26to be true. And this is why I encourage having a teachable spirit. As we get closer and closer
00:18:31to the time of Jesus, God opens up more and more truth to us. And we need to be willing to
00:18:35see it. And to change our views to be in line with the truth. Can we all agree to that? Amen?
00:18:45Can we agree to that? I just want to know what the truth is. So when the Lord opens up something
00:18:51that, that shows that, well, I have a wrong view about that. I want to, I want to go with
00:18:56the truth. And I hope you do as well. But what is, what happens oftentimes is we put a lot
00:19:01of weight behind a lot of the pioneers. And there's nothing necessarily wrong with that.
00:19:05But it's kind of lined up with correct Bible study principles in God's word. And so we
00:19:10find the early Adventist pioneer, William Miller, what he did was he linked Daniel 8 verse 11
00:19:15with 2 Thessalonians chapter 2, specifically verses 7 and 8, because both passages use the
00:19:21expression, take away. So he was thinking, oh, they take away the daily there in Daniel.
00:19:27And it says, take away in 2 Thessalonians 2, 7. So he links them together. But you see,
00:19:34found that the problem is that in 2 Thessalonians, the man of sin does not take away the daily.
00:19:41And there's the rub that finally smacked me in the head. I could never find it in Paul's
00:19:47letter. Though I read Brother Miller link them together. I'm like, I'm not seeing that.
00:19:55But I must be wrong. Something's missing. So like I said, I tucked it back away in the
00:20:00back of my mind. I could never find it. So put it there in the back of your mind. Let's
00:20:07go on. But in fact, you see, the word daily is never used in 2 Thessalonians chapter 2.
00:20:16Paul is saying the restrainer is taken out of the way by a third power so that the man of
00:20:21sin can then manifest himself and take away the daily. In Daniel 8, it is the man of sin
00:20:28that takes away the daily. And as we shall see, it is the barbarian invasions and the removal
00:20:37of the imperial sea of Rome to Constantinople that removes the restrainer. I'm going to share
00:20:46that with you in just a moment. So Daniel 8 and 2 Thessalonians 2 must be studied together,
00:20:52yes, but they have different emphasis. And so I want to add that in. That's part of the
00:20:58second view of the daily. The third view is that Papal Rome attacked the saints of the
00:21:04Most High and they took away from Jesus his heavenly priestly ministration in the holy place
00:21:11of the heavenly sanctuary. Those are the three main views when you are studying about the daily
00:21:22here in Daniel chapter 8. Now, I want to share the emphasis of 2 Thessalonians 2 before we
00:21:30go on. And I've spoken of this before in a previous study in this series. I think I spoke about it
00:21:38when we were studying Daniel chapter 7 because people have a misunderstanding about what was
00:21:44taken away. And of course, Daniel 8 gets into the details of the daily more so than Daniel 7 does.
00:21:51And so I want to look at this emphasis again. Between the year 300 AD and the year 476 AD,
00:22:02we know that there were hordes of barbarian tribes from the north that invaded and they carved up
00:22:07the Roman Empire. We learned this in Daniel 2. This is what is symbolized by the ten toes of the image
00:22:14there in Daniel 2. And then the ten horns in Daniel 7. We learned about that. In the year 330 AD,
00:22:22Emperor Constantine, he removed the sea of the Roman Empire to Constantinople. And when he did that,
00:22:30he weakened the political power of Rome in the west. Just as a note, you hear me see, and maybe you read
00:22:40it from time to time, we talk about the sea, like the Holy Sea, S-E-E, not S-E-A. It's not the name of a
00:22:50sea globally somewhere. The Holy Sea, that's a Holy Sea. It has a lot of holes in it. No, it's S-E-E.
00:22:57The word sea comes from the Latin word sedis, meaning seat. And it actually refers to the chair
00:23:06or the throne of whatever power is being described. For Papal Rome, it means the Episcopal chair
00:23:15occupied by a bishop and the area over which he has responsibility. The expression that I mentioned,
00:23:22Holy Sea, that's the Latin sancta sedis, literally means holy chair. It is the central governing body of the
00:23:31Catholic Church in Vatican City, of course, with the Pope as supreme ruler. So, just to put that out there,
00:23:38so when you hear me say sea or you read it, that's what it basically means. You could just say throne,
00:23:43you know, but for Rome it means the holy chair, because they add sancta, two sedis in the Latin.
00:23:58But, just make note of that. So, Constantine, let's get back to this, Constantine removed the sea of the
00:24:05Roman Empire to Constantinople in 330 A.D. And Romulus Augustulus, who was the last emperor of the
00:24:13Western Empire, he was deposed in the year 476 A.D. And we'll get to these years of stuff later on as we
00:24:21look at a timeline. But, so, you find that without an emperor, the Roman Empire was thrown into turmoil.
00:24:28You had the barbarian incursions into the Roman Empire, and it turned it upside down, and it left it without
00:24:35a civil ruler who could preserve law and order. You see what happened here?
00:24:40Constantinople picks up his tents, he heads east, builds a city named after him, I'm moving the empire seat to
00:24:48there, and he leaves Rome in shambles. There's no civil authority to take over. And so, in the midst of this
00:24:57chaotic situation, who steps up to the plate? The Bishop of Rome. You see, he was enticed to take the
00:25:06reins of civil power and bring about order, you know, order in the empire. And as a result, the Bishop
00:25:13of Rome was not only the spiritual leader of the church, but also became the temporal ruler of the
00:25:20state. Thus, the Roman Empire was taken out of the way to give way to the papal Roman Empire.
00:25:32And so, you find this spoken of, and I'll share these things with you here, a few of these from
00:25:39history, documented history. But Cardinal Edward Manning, he described the manner in which the
00:25:48Roman Pontiff originally gained his civil power in the Roman Empire. And Manning explained what
00:25:54occurred when the Roman Empire was invaded and torn apart by the barbarian invasions. Notice what he
00:26:01says in his, the preface to his writing, The Temporal Power of the Vicar of Jesus Christ, pages 11 to 13.
00:26:11Notice what Manning says, quote, Now the abandonment of Rome was the liberation. Pay attention to the
00:26:20words he uses here. Very significant. He says, Now the abandonment of Rome was the liberation of the
00:26:30pontiffs. Whatsoever claims to obedience the emperors may have made, and whatsoever compliance the pontiff may
00:26:39have yielded the whole previous relation, anomalous and annulled again and again by the vices and
00:26:46outrages of the emperors, was finally dissolved by a higher power, Manning says. What is it?
00:26:55Interesting statement. The providence of God permitted a succession of eruptions, Gothic, Lombard, and Hungarian,
00:27:06to desolate, to desolate Italy, and to efface from it every remnant of the empire. He's talking about
00:27:12imperial Rome. The pontiffs found themselves alone, he says. The sole fountains of order, peace, law, and
00:27:26safety. And from the hour of this providential liberation, when by a divine intervention, notice how he
00:27:34describes it, the chains fell off from the hands of the successor of St. Peter. Sounds like St. Peter,
00:27:42the successor was bound, doesn't it? He was restrained. You know what it sounds like? He says,
00:27:48The chains fell off from the hands of the successor of St. Peter, as once before from his own, no sovereign
00:27:54has ever reigned in Rome except the vicar of Jesus Christ, end quote. That's what Henry Edward Manning
00:28:04said, how the pontiffs came to power there in Rome. And so we see that there was a, you could say,
00:28:12a civil vacuum that was left by imperial Rome, and that unshackled, as Manning says, the pontiffs
00:28:21step in, they come in, come in, and they become not only the spiritual leaders, but also the civil
00:28:28leaders. Manning further explains, same writing, pages 11 to 13. He says, quote, it, and he's speaking
00:28:38about the papacy, it waited until such a time as God should break its bonds asunder and should
00:28:45liberate it from subjection to civil powers, that's a key, and enthrone it in the possession
00:28:53of a temporal sovereignty of its own, end quote.
00:29:02So when we're talking about 2 Thessalonians 2 and a restrainer, here Manning's saying this
00:29:07is where it happened. This is where the restrainer was taken out of the way. And remarkably, Manning
00:29:13refers to this taking over of civil power by the Bishop of Rome with expressions such as
00:29:20breaking bonds asunder and chains falling off. I think that's terminology that's reminiscent
00:29:27of 2 Thessalonians 2, don't you? The dragon, pagan Rome, the dragon had indeed given the beast,
00:29:35papal Rome, as it says in Revelation 13 too, his power and his seat and great authority.
00:29:43Now, what about Paul's mysterious restrainer? Let me read to you what Bible commentator Albert
00:29:53Barnes wrote about the meaning of 2 Thessalonians 2 and verse 7. Notice what he says, quote,
00:30:03the supposition which will best suit this language is that there was then some civil restraint preventing
00:30:11the development of existing corruptions, but there would be a removal or withdrawing of that
00:30:18restraint and that then the tendency of the existing corruptions would be seen. It is evident,
00:30:26as Old Shazen remarks, that this resisting or restraining power must be something out of the church.
00:30:33It wasn't the church. It was something out of the church and distinguished from the anti-Christian
00:30:38tendency itself. He goes on, he says, it is necessary, therefore, to understand this of the
00:30:45restraints of civil power. Was there then any fact in history which will accord with this
00:30:51interpretation? Well, we read what Manning said, right? Notice what he goes on to say. He says,
00:30:57the belief among the primitive Christians was that what hindered the rise of the man of sin
00:31:03was the Roman Empire. And therefore, they prayed for its peace and welfare as knowing that when the
00:31:12Roman Empire should be dissolved and broken in pieces, the empire of the man of sin would be raised
00:31:19on its ruins, end quote. Incredible statement there by Albert Barnes. And he's accurate.
00:31:28So, when you read what Paul is saying there, I mean, in cryptic language, the apostle Paul had already
00:31:39referred to the moment when the civil power of the Roman Empire would be given over to papal Rome.
00:31:45In 2 Thessalonians 2, verses 6 and 7, the apostle referred to the removal of the mysterious
00:31:51restrainer. Let's read it. 2 Thessalonians 2, verse 6,
00:31:55And now ye know what withholdeth the civil power of the Roman Empire, right? That he might be revealed
00:32:04in his time. Once the civil power, the restrainer, was taken out of the way. Verse 7,
00:32:12For the mystery of iniquity doth already work. Only he, the emperor, who now letteth, will let,
00:32:19until he, that's the emperor, be taken out of the way. And then the restrainer is removed, see.
00:32:28And the early church fathers were practically unanimous in the opinion that the restrainer was a reference
00:32:35to the Roman Empire in general and to the emperors in particular. In verse 5, the apostle refers to what
00:32:47was restraining, but in verse 7 he refers to who was restraining. And by his use of language,
00:32:55Paul indicates that the church at Thessalonica, they knew who the restrainer was, and they knew
00:33:01what was restraining. And yet, when you read it, Paul wrote in veiled cryptic language. Now why
00:33:12would Paul do that? Why didn't Paul just come out and write openly that the Roman Empire was the
00:33:19restrainer that would be taken out of the way? Well, if Paul had said openly that the Roman Empire
00:33:28would be taken out of the way, Paul was a Roman citizen, right? The Roman government would have
00:33:35had grounds to accuse him of sedition. So Paul had to be cautious in the language that he used.
00:33:44And just, you know, Jesus spoke in parables. Paul used cryptic language. So did a number of the other
00:33:49apostles. Now dispensationalists, evangelicals who believe in the rapture, you know, of the church
00:33:57before the tribulation, they generally agree among themselves that the restrainer is the Holy Spirit
00:34:03who will be removed before the tribulation. But let's put our thinking caps on, friends.
00:34:09If this were true, then why would there be any need for Paul to be so cautious?
00:34:15It's clear that Paul could not define the restrainer openly. It wasn't necessary to do so
00:34:21because the Thessalonians knew the power about which he was writing. They knew what he was talking
00:34:26about. And yet he still did it. You'll notice in the comment that we read by Cardinal Manning
00:34:35that the fall of the Roman Empire led to the liberation of the Roman pontiff. In other words,
00:34:43before this, the pontiff was restrained. And you'll also notice that the fall of the Roman Empire
00:34:50is described as chains falling off the hands of the successor of St. Peter's, is how Manning
00:34:56put it. And so the inevitable conclusion we reach from Manning's word is that the fall
00:35:01of the Empire removed or took away the restraint placed upon the Bishop of Rome. And there are
00:35:09scores of church historians that have said the same. Notice this, James Conroy, American Catholic
00:35:16quarterly review, April 1911. Notice what he said, quote, long ages ago, when Rome through
00:35:23the neglect of the Western emperors was left to the mercy of the barbarous hordes, the Romans
00:35:30turned to one figure for aid and protection and asked him to rule them. And thus, in this
00:35:37simple manner, the best title of all to kingly right commenced the temporal sovereignty of the
00:35:44popes. And meekly stepping to the throne of Caesar, the vicar of Christ took up the scepter
00:35:53to which the emperors and kings of Europe were to bow in reverence through so many ages, end
00:35:59quote. Here's Carl Conrad Eckert, the papacy in world affairs. Page one, quote, he says, under
00:36:07the Roman Empire, the popes had no temporal powers. But when the Roman Empire had disintegrated
00:36:15and its place had been taken by a number of rude barbarous kingdoms, the Roman Catholic
00:36:21Church not only became independent of the states in religious affairs, but dominated secular affairs
00:36:28as well, end quote. Here's another one. Church historian, R.W. Southern, he further explains
00:36:36the relationship between the papacy and the state during the Middle Ages. Notice what he
00:36:41says, volume two of his work, pages 24 and 25, quote, during the whole medieval period, there
00:36:48was in Rome a single spiritual and temporal authority, papacy, exercising powers which in the end
00:36:56exceeded those that had ever lain within the grasp of the Roman emperor, end quote. Indeed, it
00:37:04did exceed that of the emperors. Church historian John Figgis, he adds this to the stew, he adds
00:37:19this to the stew, of documentation. Oh, this is from his work, from Gershon to Grotius, page
00:37:29four. He says, quote, in the Middle Ages, the church was not a state. It was the state, or
00:37:37rather, the civil authority, for a separate society was not recognized, was merely the police
00:37:44department of the church, end quote. That's an incredible statement there. It's a true
00:37:50statement. It's this idea of the church ruling in temporal as well as in spiritual affairs
00:37:55was laid out in 1302 AD when Pope Boniface VIII, he wrote a significant bull. That's a personal
00:38:03letter. He titled it Unum Sanctum, and I've quoted from it before. But he talks about the
00:38:08Catholic church having two swords, if you recall. We studied that in depth in our series of studies
00:38:14in Daniel chapter 7. But notice what Boniface VIII wrote in his letter, his bull. Quote, bull
00:38:22is correct. Quote, we are informed by the text of the Gospels that in this, and he's talking
00:38:28about Roman Catholic church, in this church and in its power are two swords, namely, the
00:38:36spiritual and the temporal. Both, therefore, are in the power of the church. That is to
00:38:41say, the spiritual and the material sword. But the former, that's the spiritual, is to
00:38:47be administered for the church, but the latter, the temporal, by the church. The former in the
00:38:55hands of the priest, the latter by the hands of kings and soldiers, but at the will and
00:39:02sufferance of the priest, end quote. Now, consider that statement. Keep that in mind. And considering
00:39:10these words from Daniel 8, verse 12, and an host was given him against the daily, we could
00:39:18see that the church was given civil authority, backed by a sword to enforce its dogmas upon
00:39:24the world. Think that through, friends. Think that through. Now, Ellen White has some interesting
00:39:31statements regarding how the secular power was removed, and the papacy was able to ascend
00:39:37to power. This is from the Great Controversy, page 49. The Great Controversy, page 49. Quote,
00:39:48The spirit of compromise and conformity, and that's of the early Christian church, was restrained
00:39:56for a time by the fierce persecutions which the church endured under paganism. That's the
00:40:02Roman Empire, imperial Rome. She says, but as persecution ceased, and Christianity entered
00:40:10the courts and palaces of kings, she laid aside the humble simplicity of Christ and his apostles
00:40:18for the pomp and pride of pagan priests and rulers, and in place of the requirements of God, she
00:40:27substituted human theories and traditions, end quote. Great Controversy, page 49. Notice this
00:40:33statement out of Manuscript Releases, volume 1, page 50. She says, quote, The vast empire of
00:40:42Rome crumbled to pieces, and from its ruins rose that mighty power, the Roman Catholic Church. This
00:40:50church boasts of her infallibility and her hereditary religion. And so in 1798, we see that the handcuffs
00:41:02were once again put on the papacy by the major secular powers of the world. Remember that? France
00:41:07takes the pope prisoner. He removes its lands and titles, its civil authority, one of the swords,
00:41:15and thus the papacy has been in this condition for over 200 years. But let me tell you, when the
00:41:20secular power to withhold is taken out of the way, the papacy will once again exert its power. Notice
00:41:28this again from the book, The Great Controversy, page 564, quote, Let the restraints now imposed by
00:41:36secular governments be removed, and Rome be reinstated in her former power, and there would
00:41:45speedily be a revival of her tyranny and persecution, end quote. Again, Great Controversy, page 564.
00:41:53When you open God's Word, friends, every text must be studied within its own context. There's
00:42:04a greater context, and there's a finer context. And this is a biblical principle. The meaning
00:42:10of 2 Thessalonians 2 should not be imposed on Daniel 8. The civil power was taken out of
00:42:17the way of the Bishop of Rome when the papacy first ascended to power. Right? The civil power
00:42:24then took the papacy out of the way in 1798 AD. But the state will once again be taken out
00:42:31of the way, and the papacy will exert its power once more. We read that in Revelation 13.3,
00:42:37when the deadly wound is healed, you see. But the Bible tells us, and praise God for this, that
00:42:48finally, the civil powers will hate the harlot and take her out of the way once and for all. We read that
00:42:54in Revelation 17, verse 16. And of course, if you get into Revelation chapter 20, it actually helps us
00:43:01understand what it means to be bound or restrained and unbound or unrestrained. It talks about the
00:43:06bombless pit and the devil being restrained. You see, when Satan is able to use the civil rulers of the
00:43:13world to accomplish his purposes, he's unbound. But when the kings are dead, he's bound. That's probably
00:43:21about as simple as I can put it. Now, I wanted to touch on that, clear that up so there's a right
00:43:27understanding. When we look at Daniel 8, let's not get confused by what is being meant by Paul in the
00:43:34strainer and tying it inward should be tied in to Daniel 8. Now, let's get back to looking at the
00:43:42daily here in the 8th chapter of Daniel. You know, Adventists have always believed that there are four
00:43:50prophetic outlines in Daniel. I don't know if you're aware of this or not. But this is what we've always
00:43:56believed. Daniel 2, Jesus is king. You get to Daniel 7, Jesus as judge. You look at Daniels 8 and 9,
00:44:06which we're getting into, Jesus as high priest. And then chapters 10 through 12, we see Jesus as
00:44:14deliverer. And now, the focus of Daniel 8 and 9 is the sanctuary service. So, we need to look at the
00:44:23daily and understand it in the context of the sanctuary. And the Old Testament makes it abundantly
00:44:31clear that when this word, tamed, is used in the context of the sanctuary, it always, without
00:44:38exception, refers to the daily ministration of the priest in the court and in the holy place. In other
00:44:45words, the little horn was going to attempt to take away from the prince of the host his
00:44:51ministration in the court and his ministration in the holy place of the sanctuary. Let me share some
00:44:57texts where the daily tamed is used with reference to the sanctuary. If you look at Exodus 30, verse
00:45:058, it talks about a perpetually burning incense, perpetually, continuance. Exodus 27, perpetually
00:45:13burning lamps. That's a continually burning of the lamps. Leviticus 24, ever-present showbread.
00:45:20It's always there. Exodus 29, daily morning and evening offerings. Leviticus 6, talks about a
00:45:30perpetual fire on the altar. Leviticus 6, still, a daily morning and evening meal offerings. In
00:45:41Exodus 28, again, you see a memorial of Aaron's breastplate, and you see that the mitre was
00:45:47continually worn. It's the same word. 1 Chronicles 16, talks about a continual ministry of the
00:45:56priests. In Numbers 9, you see a constant presence of God in the pillar of cloud and in the fire.
00:46:06In Deuteronomy 11, it talks to us about a constant care by God for His people. Praise Him for that.
00:46:12Isaiah talks about God's continual guidance. Isaiah talks about God's continual guidance. So, we see it as a part of, in reference to the
00:46:23sanctuary, when it talks about the daily. There are so many more I could go into. Let me share this from the book
00:46:29Patriarchs and Prophets, page 357. Notice this, quote,
00:46:41After His ascension, our Savior was to begin His work as our High Priest. Says Paul,
00:46:49Christ has not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us. Hebrews 9, verse 24.
00:47:04As Christ's ministration was to consist of two great divisions, each occupying a period of time and having a distinctive place in the heavenly sanctuary, so the typical
00:47:17ministration consisted of two divisions. Notice what she says, the daily and the yearly service. And to each, a department of the
00:47:30tabernacle was devoted. As Christ, at His ascension, appeared in the presence of God to plead His blood in behalf of penitent believers, so the priest, in the daily
00:47:42ministration, sprinkled the blood of the sacrifice in the holy place in the sinner's behalf. End quote. We see a picture here of the
00:47:55ministration of the ministration of Jesus. And we need to understand what happened to the blood. It didn't just end at the cross. Something was done with the
00:48:04blood. There's power in the blood, right? Something was done with the blood. We've got to understand this. And then Daniel opens up to us, just clear as day.
00:48:16Here's from the great controversy, page 418. Quote, the ministration of the earthly sanctuary consisted of two
00:48:27divisions. The priest ministered daily in the holy place. While once a year, the high priest performed a special
00:48:35work of atonement in the most holy for the cleansing of the sanctuary. Notice what she says, day by day, the
00:48:43repentant sinner brought his offering to the door of the tabernacle, and placing his hand upon the
00:48:48victim's head, confessed his sins, thus in figure, transferring them from himself to the innocent
00:48:56sacrifice. She says, such was the work that went on day by day throughout the year. The sins of Israel
00:49:07were thus transferred to the sanctuary and a special work became necessary for their removal. The sad part is
00:49:17Christians and most Christianity stop at that point. Well, then why did God continue with the rest of the
00:49:26sanctuary services stuff? What were they all about? Oh, that was for the Jews. Was it really?
00:49:33I think this through. Think it through. I want you to notice what Othiel says in his outline studies in
00:49:41Daniel, page 90. He says, quote, the perpetually burning incense, the ever-present showbread, the
00:49:51continual ministration of the priests, were all types of the continual ministry of Christ in the
00:50:00heavenly sanctuary in behalf of man. He didn't say of Jew. He said of man. Thus, in Daniel 8, verse 11,
00:50:11the daily, no doubt, was employed to denote the constant, unceasing ministry of Christ in the
00:50:20heavenly sanctuary, heavenly sanctuary, and not merely the daily offering of sacrifice in the earthly
00:50:27sanctuary, end quote. Dead-on accurate, Theo is. Notice this from the Bible Research Institute, their second
00:50:41synod on Daniel, page 514. Notice what they say, quote, in the Old Testament, Tamid,
00:50:49is commonly used 30 times in connection with several different types of activity of the
00:50:56priests of the sanctuary. The connection of Tamid with the sanctuary is especially emphasized by its
00:51:04recurrence in verse 12. In this manner, the word Tamid, used in both verses 11 and 12, talking about
00:51:11Daniel 8, flanks the word for sanctuary at the end of verse 11. Thus, the order of these relationships is
00:51:19Tamid, sanctuary, Tamid. The close and intimate relationship between these concepts underscores the
00:51:28fact that this Tamid ministry of the prince is connected with this heavenly sanctuary, end quote.
00:51:38Tamid. Are you starting to see the picture here?
00:51:45Tamid, the daily Tamid. The word Tamid means continual and is used in this passage to signify a continual
00:51:54something without expressing what the something is. So translators have sometimes added the term
00:51:59sacrifice, as I pointed out. That's their attempt to make the passage fit in Anticus Epiphanes, as we noted
00:52:06before. But we need to look instead at the symbolic Tamid of Daniel 8, as representing the continual.
00:52:14That is, the all-of-the-time high priestly ministry of Jesus Christ on our behalf in the heavenly sanctuary.
00:52:23Now, that Jesus ministers on our behalf continually is emphasized in Hebrews 7, verses 21 to 25,
00:52:32where his ministry is contrasted with non-continuous ministry of the Old Testament Levitical priests.
00:52:42You read there, Paul's saying that there were a lot of former priests because each died.
00:52:47They couldn't continue in office, right? But Jesus holds his priesthood permanently, Paul says,
00:52:53because he continues forever. Consequently, he's able for all time to save those who draw close to God
00:53:00through him, since he always lives, as the Bible says, to make intercession for them and praise his name.
00:53:08Quite often, Tamid is used in a technical sense, as I've shared some of them, to describe various basic aspects
00:53:16of the ritual associated with the Old Testament sanctuary. I noted some of the examples for you before.
00:53:23I mean, a dozen times it refers to the offering of a lamb, regularly, morning and evening,
00:53:28as a continual burnt offering. It also refers to the lamps that were kept continually burning,
00:53:35and to the continual offering of the showbread, which was kept on display perpetually.
00:53:42It was changed weekly.
00:53:43In Exodus chapter 28, you look at verses 29 to 30,
00:53:50Tamid refers to the symbolically adorned breastpiece that the high priest wore continually
00:53:55whenever his duties required him to enter the sanctuary.
00:53:59In 2 Chronicles 24, verse 14,
00:54:03it refers to all the burnt offering offered to God during a particular king's lifetime.
00:54:09And in 1 Chronicles 23, verse 31, it refers to the special sacrifices
00:54:14that were offered regularly on Sabbaths and on new moons and feast days.
00:54:22And with this in mind, it becomes apparent
00:54:24that Tamid took into account the entire continuing ministry of the Old Testament sanctuary
00:54:30and was by no means, friends,
00:54:34limited to the daily burnt offerings that most Christian ministers teach today
00:54:38and have for a hundred years, or more, actually.
00:54:43The sanctuary rituals, which God required, were impressive.
00:54:46They were varied.
00:54:48The basic ritual was the offering of a lamb each morning and evening.
00:54:51And according to Leviticus 9.24,
00:54:54God himself miraculously kindled the altar fire when the tabernacle was originally dedicated.
00:55:00And the priests were under strict instructions, and you can read it,
00:55:04never to let it go out.
00:55:05Tradition letter, you know, that claims that the original fire continued to burn from the time of Moses
00:55:13until Nebuchadnezzar destroyed the temple.
00:55:17And that's over 800 years.
00:55:19That fire burned continually.
00:55:23This continually burning sacrifice said a lot to the Israelites
00:55:27that were camping as they were going through the wilderness.
00:55:30I mean, at any moment,
00:55:31when anyone felt remorse for his sinfulness,
00:55:33all he had to do was glance at the tabernacle.
00:55:36Or maybe at night, take a sniff of the air.
00:55:38It could bring reassurance to him that the sacrifice was in progress on his behalf.
00:55:45And the continuance of the sacrifice would remind him that the other basic functions
00:55:49of the priesthood were being maintained on his behalf as well.
00:55:52The lamps, and we'll get more into the furniture here in a later study,
00:55:59but the lamps were burning day and night.
00:56:02Their steady glow reflecting from the gold-plated walls of the tabernacle.
00:56:06The bread was in its place on the golden table.
00:56:09And the high priest, as often, at least as he was on duty,
00:56:14was carrying on his breastplate the name of every tribe in the nation,
00:56:20thus symbolically carrying near to his heart in the presence of God
00:56:25the name of every individual that was in that camp.
00:56:29Just like Jesus does, see?
00:56:33Like the medals of Daniel 2, the beasts of Daniel 7, and the horns of Daniel 8,
00:56:39which are symbols of empires and kingdoms,
00:56:41so the Tamed of Daniel 8 is a symbol.
00:56:45It's a symbol of the continual ministry of Jesus Christ in the heavenly sanctuary,
00:56:51forgiving our sins,
00:56:52providing power for us to live changed lives
00:56:55in fulfillment of the new covenant promises,
00:56:57victory over sin, friends, and eternal life.
00:57:00Praise his holy name.
00:57:03Let me share this with you.
00:57:04Again, Bible Research Institute,
00:57:062nd Synod on Daniel, pages 404, 406.
00:57:10It would be good.
00:57:12You could look it up and you could read all these yourself.
00:57:16Notice this.
00:57:17Quote,
00:57:17A study of the usages of Tamed in the book of Leviticus
00:57:22discloses that the term was intimately linked with the ministry of the priests
00:57:28in the first apartment of the sanctuary.
00:57:31Pay attention to this.
00:57:32It is never used in connection with the second apartment ministry.
00:57:37The expression,
00:57:39Ha-Tamed,
00:57:40the Tamed,
00:57:40in Daniel, therefore,
00:57:42would be more correctly translated,
00:57:44the continual intercession,
00:57:46rather than the daily sacrifice,
00:57:49as in our common version.
00:57:50As it's common,
00:57:51they're saying in quote,
00:57:52as it's commonly interpreted.
00:57:54That's why they had the word sacrifice.
00:57:56The daily sacrifice.
00:57:59That doesn't belong there, friends.
00:58:03And take note that the word Tamed
00:58:05is never used in the Old Testament
00:58:07to describe anything
00:58:08that transpires in the most holy place of the sanctuary.
00:58:12And this is important
00:58:13because some in our midst
00:58:15are teaching that the taking away of the daily
00:58:18in the end times
00:58:19refers to the National Sunday Law.
00:58:21Now,
00:58:23I believe a good case can be made
00:58:26that the National Sunday Law
00:58:27is the abomination of desolation.
00:58:29That's referred to in
00:58:30Daniel 11, 31,
00:58:32and Matthew 24, 15.
00:58:34But the abomination of desolation
00:58:36and the daily
00:58:37are two different things, friends.
00:58:39They're two different things.
00:58:42The papacy first took away the daily
00:58:44in 508 A.D.
00:58:45and then set up the abomination of desolation
00:58:48by the Sunday Law in 538 A.D.
00:58:50something else that's interesting.
00:58:56The word Tamed is an adjective or adverb.
00:58:59But Daniel uses it as a noun.
00:59:03Daniel does the same thing
00:59:04in chapter 9, verse 24
00:59:05where he uses another adjective as a noun.
00:59:09Both times referring to the sanctuary service.
00:59:12And it's not just a coincidence.
00:59:15Look at Daniel 9, 24.
00:59:19It says,
00:59:19"...seventy weeks are determined upon thy people
00:59:21and upon thy holy city
00:59:23to finish the transgression,
00:59:25to make an end of sins,
00:59:26to make reconciliation for iniquity,
00:59:29and to bring in everlasting righteousness,
00:59:31and to seal up the vision and prophecy,
00:59:33and to anoint the most holy."
00:59:36End quote.
00:59:37Daniel 9, 24.
00:59:40So here in verse 24,
00:59:42the most holy is an adjective.
00:59:44But it's used like a noun
00:59:46and refers to the entire heavenly sanctuary
00:59:49that Jesus anointed upon his ascension into heaven.
00:59:55Thus,
00:59:56Daniel uses two adjectives like nouns
00:59:59to describe aspects of Christ's work
01:00:01in the heavenly sanctuary.
01:00:02It's amazing.
01:00:04It's like he knew we needed to know this.
01:00:06And I think it's critical to stress that
01:00:10forgiveness or atonement was not affected
01:00:13without both the shedding
01:00:14and the application of the blood,
01:00:18which I touched on before.
01:00:20Many Christians overlook this fact.
01:00:22They speak, you know,
01:00:23gratefully about the act of salvation on the cross
01:00:25and about the blood which Jesus shed there,
01:00:28but they stop short.
01:00:30They don't mention that in some sense,
01:00:32Jesus had to take blood with him
01:00:34into the heavenly sanctuary
01:00:35in order to minister adequately
01:00:38for the forgiveness of our sins.
01:00:41His ministry did not stop in the courtyard, friends.
01:00:44It continued into the holy place
01:00:46and then into the most holy place.
01:00:50Notice this.
01:00:51Maxwell says this in his work,
01:00:53God Cares, Volume 1,
01:00:55pages 163 and 164.
01:00:58Quote,
01:00:58He says,
01:00:59Hebrews 9, verse 12,
01:01:01says that,
01:01:02He entered once for all into the holy place,
01:01:05taking his own blood,
01:01:07thus securing an eternal redemption.
01:01:10So the high priestly ministry of Jesus Christ
01:01:13in the heavenly sanctuary
01:01:14is as vital to our salvation
01:01:17as was his death on the cross.
01:01:21He goes on.
01:01:22He says,
01:01:23Fully as essential as the cross
01:01:25is Christ's continual ministry,
01:01:27his tamed in heaven.
01:01:29The superiority of Christ's tamed,
01:01:32because Christ does not die again,
01:01:35either sacrificially or from old age,
01:01:38his priesthood is marked
01:01:39by an immeasurable superiority
01:01:41in its continualness.
01:01:45End quote.
01:01:46And we'll get into how,
01:01:48in future studies,
01:01:49how the desolator,
01:01:52how the little horn
01:01:53desolates the ministry of Jesus
01:01:56in looking at
01:01:57how he takes these things away,
01:02:02the continual ministry of Christ.
01:02:05He talked about the mass
01:02:09and other things.
01:02:11I love this statement by Bunch.
01:02:14It's in his book of Daniel,
01:02:17page 118.
01:02:17Notice this statement he makes.
01:02:19He says,
01:02:20Christ's daily or continual mediation
01:02:23before God makes possible
01:02:24a daily or continual Christian experience.
01:02:28End quote.
01:02:29Isn't that wonderful?
01:02:31What an incredible statement.
01:02:33I love that statement.
01:02:34And then we see in Daniel,
01:02:37Daniel says in Daniel 8, verse 11,
01:02:42he says,
01:02:44and by,
01:02:45and that should read from,
01:02:47and by him the daily sacrifice
01:02:49was taken away.
01:02:50What is meant by taken away?
01:02:53Remember we touched on it,
01:02:54I told you that William Miller,
01:02:55he ties taken away with 2 Thessalonians
01:02:57when that's not the case.
01:03:00What is meant by the expression taken away?
01:03:02The Hebrew word room
01:03:05can mean to exalt or lift up.
01:03:09But when this verb is used in connection with the sanctuary,
01:03:12it always means to take away.
01:03:14So it means to take away.
01:03:16Take away the continual that's being spoken of here.
01:03:19Now, in order to comprehend
01:03:22how the little horn took away the daily,
01:03:29we need to answer two fundamental questions.
01:03:31I'm going to wrap it up here.
01:03:34Two fundamental questions that we need to answer.
01:03:39First,
01:03:42in which sanctuary is the prince ministering
01:03:44at this point in the vision?
01:03:47And the second question is,
01:03:49what do each of the pieces of furniture in the court
01:03:51and in the holy place represent?
01:03:54In other words,
01:03:55what was the meaning of the altar of sacrifice?
01:03:58What's the meaning of the candlestick?
01:04:00What's the meaning of the table of showbread
01:04:01and the altar of incense?
01:04:03When we find that out,
01:04:05and we're able to determine the answer
01:04:07to these questions,
01:04:09you see, friends,
01:04:10then we're going to know also
01:04:11what the little horn attempted to take away
01:04:13from the prince and when.
01:04:16That he's trying to desolate this ministry
01:04:18and how he does it.
01:04:21Now, in closing to this particular study,
01:04:32I'm going to read Daniel 8, verses 8 to 12
01:04:34with what we've learned so far.
01:04:35And I'm going to interject it into the Scripture here.
01:04:39We read these verses.
01:04:41And hopefully it makes sense.
01:04:43And I hope it opens some of your eyes
01:04:45to what Daniel's telling us here,
01:04:48what this vision is about.
01:04:50Okay, Daniel 8, verse 8.
01:04:52Therefore the he-goat, Greece,
01:04:55waxed very great.
01:04:56And when he was strong,
01:04:58the great horn,
01:04:59Alexander the Great,
01:05:00was broken.
01:05:01He died.
01:05:01And for it came up four notable ones
01:05:04toward the four winds of heaven.
01:05:06The Ptolemies,
01:05:07the Antigonids,
01:05:09the Seleucids,
01:05:09and Pergamum.
01:05:10We found that out.
01:05:12Verse 9.
01:05:13And out of one of them,
01:05:15Pergamum,
01:05:15came forth a little horn,
01:05:18political or imperial Rome,
01:05:20which waxed exceeding great
01:05:23horizontally on the earth
01:05:25toward the south,
01:05:27that's Egypt,
01:05:27toward the east,
01:05:28Macedonia,
01:05:30and toward the pleasant land,
01:05:33that's Israel.
01:05:35Verse 10.
01:05:36And it waxed,
01:05:37or grew,
01:05:38great,
01:05:39even to the host of heaven.
01:05:40Now it grows vertically.
01:05:42And it cast down some of the host,
01:05:45God's faithful people,
01:05:47and of the stars,
01:05:48leaders of God's people,
01:05:50to the ground,
01:05:51and stamped upon them.
01:05:52It persecuted,
01:05:53killed them,
01:05:54as one enraged.
01:05:57Verse 11.
01:05:58Yea, he,
01:05:59papal Rome,
01:06:01magnified himself,
01:06:03built himself up,
01:06:05even to the prince of the host,
01:06:07that's Jesus,
01:06:09the high priest in the heavenly sanctuary,
01:06:12and by him,
01:06:15Hebrew actually says,
01:06:16from him,
01:06:17the daily,
01:06:18the continual ministry of Jesus,
01:06:20sacrifice,
01:06:21that word sacrifice
01:06:22doesn't belong there,
01:06:24and by him,
01:06:24the daily,
01:06:25the continual ministry of Jesus,
01:06:26was taken away.
01:06:27And the place,
01:06:28it's interesting,
01:06:29the word place
01:06:30in the vast majority of cases
01:06:31is used to describe
01:06:33God's dwelling place in heaven.
01:06:35And the place
01:06:36of his sanctuary
01:06:38was cast down.
01:06:41Papal Rome,
01:06:41magnified himself
01:06:43above the God of heaven.
01:06:46Verse 12.
01:06:47And a host was given him.
01:06:51Kings of the earth
01:06:52furnished papal Rome
01:06:53with armies.
01:06:56And a host was given him
01:06:57against the daily.
01:06:58The state comes
01:06:59to the aid of the little horn
01:07:00to help it control
01:07:01their fraudulent ministry
01:07:03in tamping down
01:07:04the truth of God,
01:07:05right?
01:07:06Sacrifice,
01:07:07again,
01:07:07that's added.
01:07:08By reason of transgression,
01:07:09by reason of
01:07:11the rebellion
01:07:11against the host
01:07:12and the prince
01:07:13and his sanctuary.
01:07:15And it cast down
01:07:17the truth to the ground.
01:07:18Papal Rome decides
01:07:20what's truth,
01:07:21primarily the truth
01:07:21about the sanctuary
01:07:22and the day of atonement.
01:07:24And it practiced
01:07:25papal Rome
01:07:26and prospered.
01:07:27End quote.
01:07:28Friends,
01:07:32is it any wonder
01:07:34that Daniel was astonished
01:07:37at what he saw
01:07:38in this vision?
01:07:43I am so very glad
01:07:45that we have
01:07:47a merciful
01:07:48and loving God
01:07:50in heaven,
01:07:50aren't you?
01:07:52Someone that powerful,
01:07:54the seer of all things,
01:07:55the commander of all things,
01:07:56who is in complete control.
01:07:58What about you?
01:08:03I hope that you do.
01:08:05Let's give our hearts
01:08:05to him
01:08:06fully
01:08:07today
01:08:09while we still have time.
01:08:11Let's do it today.
01:08:12And we'll answer
01:08:13our two questions
01:08:14about how the little horn
01:08:15took away
01:08:16the daily ministry
01:08:17of Jesus
01:08:17in our next study.
01:08:20Let's bow
01:08:21and have a word of prayer.
01:08:22Father in heaven,
01:08:22we again thank you
01:08:23so much
01:08:24for your holy word,
01:08:27for sharing with us
01:08:28the truth,
01:08:30giving us the Holy Spirit
01:08:31to discern
01:08:32the truth.
01:08:34We pray
01:08:35that the Holy Spirit
01:08:36will develop
01:08:37within us
01:08:38the character
01:08:38of Jesus
01:08:39in loving each other
01:08:40and loving you,
01:08:42loving the truth,
01:08:44and sharing it
01:08:44with all around us.
01:08:46Father,
01:08:47I pray for those
01:08:48who may be hearing
01:08:48these things
01:08:49for the first time.
01:08:50They may be offended.
01:08:51That's not the intent.
01:08:53But sometimes
01:08:54your word does offend.
01:08:56The truth offends.
01:08:58So I pray
01:08:59that you be very near
01:08:59those people
01:09:00specifically,
01:09:01that the Holy Spirit
01:09:02will bring peace
01:09:03to their heart,
01:09:04that will open their eyes,
01:09:05remove the scales,
01:09:06help them to see
01:09:06these things,
01:09:08that they may be
01:09:09a part of the family
01:09:10and go home
01:09:12with all of us
01:09:13when Jesus comes.
01:09:15That is my prayer.
01:09:16I pray it in the name
01:09:17of Jesus,
01:09:18for he's so worthy.
01:09:19Amen and amen.
01:09:20I want to thank you
01:09:21all for joining me.
01:09:23I encourage you,

01:09:51And I hope
01:09:54and pray you start
01:09:54to see these things.
01:09:58Jesus' character
01:09:59isn't one of hate,
01:10:00it's one of love.
01:10:01I pray that my character
01:10:03matches his
01:10:04and that yours will
01:10:06as well.
01:10:08And keep looking up.
01:10:09Never doubt the love
01:10:10of Jesus for you.
01:10:12Don't do it.
01:10:13Don't listen to Satan.
01:10:14He'll whisper these doubts
01:10:15in your ear.
01:10:17Don't do it.
01:10:18Keep your eyes
01:10:18lifted up to Jesus
01:10:19as he ministers for us
01:10:21in the heavenly sanctuary.
01:10:23And by God's grace,
01:10:24we'll remain faithful
01:10:25to the end.
01:10:26And we'll see you
01:10:27next time we get together.
01:10:28Have a wonderful day.
01:10:30And keep praising God
01:10:32because he's worthy
01:10:33of our praise.
01:10:33See you next time.
01:10:35God bless.
