00:00Dear viewers, this is not just another highway death story.
00:20This is the story of how a 49-year-old woman named Chaya Purav,
00:25alive, conscious and in pain, was killed not by an accident alone,
00:30but by combined negligence of our roads, our hospitals and our system.
00:35Killed by a highway that eats time.
00:37Killed by a district that doesn't have a well-equipped trauma center.
00:41Killed by a government that talks about development but can't save a life in 2025.
00:47And here is the part that will haunt you.
00:49Doctors told her husband she could have been saved
00:52if they had reached just 30 minutes earlier.
00:5530 minutes!
00:56That's the gap between life and death.
00:58And our infrastructure couldn't even give her that.
01:01Hello, I'm Tejas and you're watching Honest Take on Lokmat Times.
01:05In today's video, we break down what happened with Chaya
01:08and how her death is not an unfortunate incident but a murder by neglect.

01:18and press the bell icon to never miss an update.
01:21It was July 31st, 2025.
01:23Chaya Purav was doing something routine.
01:25Supervising road cleaning work near her home in Safare's Madhukar Nagar Palghar district.
01:31She had no idea that in a matter of a few seconds, her life would turn upside down.
01:36A tree branch snapped.
01:38It fell on her.
01:39Not just a bruise or a cut.
01:41It crushed her with force.
01:42She suffered skull fractures, multiple rib fractures, shoulder injuries, severe head trauma.
01:48The local hospital in Palghar took one look and knew they couldn't save her there.
01:53Because Palghar district with a population of over 3 million doesn't have a single fully equipped trauma centre.
02:00So the decision was made.
02:01Shift her to Mumbai.
02:03The closest hospital capable of handling such trauma?
02:06Hinduja hospital.
02:07Roughly 100 kilometers away.
02:09A journey that on paper takes 2.5 hours.
02:13But paper doesn't know NH48.
02:15August 2nd, 2025.
02:17The ambulance leaves Safare at around 3pm.
02:20Chaya is in the back under anesthesia to help her bear the pain.
02:24Her husband Kaushik is next to her.
02:26Watching the monitors, watching the road, watching the clock.
02:29The driver hits NH48.
02:31And the nightmare begins.
02:33Gridlock.
02:34Not the kind where you honk and crawl.
02:36The kind where you don't move at all.
02:38Why?
02:39Because NH48 is a construction site masquerading as highway.
02:43Because wrong side driving has turned the road into chaos.
02:47Because potholes big enough to crack bones are waiting every few meters.
02:52It takes over 3 hours for them to cover just half the distance.
02:563 hours of slow torture in a box on wheels.
02:593 hours for the anesthesia to start wearing off.
03:02And then the screaming starts.
03:04Kaushik tells it best.
03:06She was screaming in pain and crying.
03:08She begged to me to take her to a hospital at the earliest.
03:11The road was full of potholes and each bump made her pain burst.
03:16Imagine that.
03:17You are next to the person you love most.
03:19You can see them fighting for every breath.
03:22You can see them break.
03:23And all you can do is sit there.
03:26Because the road won't let you pass.
03:28There was no emergency lane.
03:30No police escort.
03:31No coordinated traffic clearance.
03:33Just a line of vehicles.
03:35Stuck, swearing, sweating.
03:37As someone's life ticked away.
03:39By 6 pm, they had only reached Virar.
03:42Still far from Mumbai.
03:43Kaushik makes a desperate call.
03:45Skip Hinduja, head for the nearest hospital.
03:48It's 7 pm when they finally reach Orbit Hospital in Mirarol.
03:52Too late.
03:53Doctors look at her, look at him and say the words that will never leave him.
03:57She could have been saved if you had reached just 30 minutes earlier.
04:01Let's be clear, the branch may have injured Chaya.
04:05But what killed her were 3 things.
04:071.
04:08No trauma care centre in Palgarh.
04:10District this big, dispopulated with industries, highways and daily accidents.
04:15And still, not one advanced trauma facility that could handle head injuries and multiple fractures.
04:212.
04:22A death trap called NH48.
04:24This Mumbai Ahmedabad Highway is a lifeline for trade, travel and emergencies.
04:29But in reality, it's been under white topping construction for nearly 2 years.
04:33Rs. 553 crore spent yet 65 km still incomplete.
04:38Potholes, poor materials and delayed work everywhere.
04:41Over 30 people dead on this stretch in the first half of 2025 alone.
04:463.
04:47Traffic management failure.
04:48Where were the emergency protocols?
04:50Where was the police clearance for an ambulance?
04:52Where were the divergence to ensure one life could be saved?
04:56Here is the thing.
04:57Chaya's case is not unique.
05:00For years, NH48 has been claiming lives.
05:03Locals call it a death trap.
05:05Not just because of accidents, but because ambulances can't move.
05:09From 2023 to now, multiple reports, protests and videos have shown exactly what is wrong.
05:15And exactly what could have been fixed.
05:17But somehow, every agency, NHAI, the PWD, traffic police, contractors, they all have managed to pass the blame like a hot potato.
05:26We love to talk about development, expressways, metro lines, billion rupee projects.
05:31But what's the point if a woman can't reach a hospital in time?
05:35What's the point if 100 kilometers turn into 4 hours?
05:38What's the point if the basic right to emergency care is treated like a luxury?
05:43This isn't just about Chaya.
05:45It's about every single person who might need an ambulance tomorrow on NH48.
05:50It's about every district that depends on Mumbai for serious medical care.
05:54It's about every government promise that sounds good in speeches but dies on the road.
06:00So who is responsible for this?
06:02NHAI for letting construction drag on and quality slip.
06:06Traffic authorities for having no emergency clearance system.
06:10State government for not building a trauma center in Palghar despite knowing the need.
06:15And contractors for pocketing crores and delivering potholes.
06:19And yet, will anyone lose their job?
06:21Will anyone be charged for criminal negligence?
06:23Or will we just wait for the next unfortunate incident?
06:27If we don't want more Chaya's, here is what must happen.
06:31Well-equipped trauma center in Palghar.
06:33Now, not in the next plan.
06:35NH48 repair and completion on war footing.
06:38Not in election season.
06:39Permanent emergency lanes on all major highways.
06:42Traffic police training for medical emergencies.
06:45Accountability law that treats such delays as culpable homicide.
06:49Because human life cannot be an afterthought in infrastructure development.
06:54Chaya Purav's name will be forgotten in a few weeks.
06:57Her husband will go home to an empty chair at dinner.
07:00Her children will carry her absence like a shadow.
07:03And NH48 will still have potholes.
07:06Unless we decide that one death like this is already too many.
07:10We can keep calling it bad luck and traffic problem.
07:13Or we can call it what it really is.
07:15A system that kills by delay.
07:17Chaya could have been saved.
07:19That's the truth.
07:20And the most shameful part, we already know how to prevent the next one.
07:24We just don't care enough to do it.
07:26That's all for today's honest take with me Tejas.
