00:00After winning the Golden Lion at Venice 2013 for Sacro Gra, Gianfranco Rossi has been invited
00:07back to participate in the Venice competition in 2025. This time, Rossi takes us to the slopes
00:13of Vesuvius with his documentary, telling the story of the entire Vesuvius area, the
00:18Phlegrean fields, and paying particular attention to that black and frightening mountain, which
00:23also makes that area fertile and has become proverbial. The title of the film is Sato
00:31Le Nouvelle, and it is a declaration of intent, an explanation of what will be told in the
00:35film. In fact, the documentary opens with a quote, all the clouds in the world were born
00:42from Vesuvius. The film seems to tell exactly this story, all the clouds, all the problems,
00:49all the events that take place on the slopes of the mountain. Just as Sacro Gra was in
00:552013, Sato Le Nouvelle is also a story of episodes. The director moves between the fire department
01:04headquarters, the one that receives all the reports from people in difficulty, generating
01:09moments of laughter, but also very dramatic moments.
01:12He ventures into the depths and storage areas of the National Museum among ancient statues
01:22that have stories, souls and many other situations and places that are all evocative and characteristic.
01:28In particular, the room of Titty, the teacher, an elderly gentleman who gives after-school
01:41lessons to the children of the neighborhood and switches from French to history to mathematics
01:45with great ease, teaching these children not only the subjects they have to study and repeat
01:49for school, but also a bit of his wisdom.
01:58The backbone of the entire film is the journey on the circumvesuviana and the M, the regional
02:03train line that circles the entire Naples area and the entire area surrounding Vesuvius.
02:12has become proverbial on social media and, therefore, this train, ah, disastrous and picturesque represents,
02:18in some way, the trade union, the common thread that unites all these stories.
02:24Formally, Sato Le Nouvelle Asterisk is 100% Rossi's film.
02:33The director has built his documentary style through a series of stylistic devices that we
02:37find in this film, the posed images, the reproduction of dialogues that could be real.
02:46So the documentary is somehow contaminated with fiction and representation.
02:51After all, we know that pure documentary is something that almost does not exist.
02:58Rossi manages once again to make films of great interest, ah, describing a place and
03:03people through his always very curious, precise eye and with a strong artistic sensitivity.
03:07M.
03:08M.
03:09M.
