00:00A dramatic televised announcement by Russia's top military officer, General Valery Gerasimov,
00:20sent shockwaves across Ukraine and the West. Standing before President Vladimir Putin in a
00:26secure underground command center, Gerasimov proclaimed a major victory. The supposed
00:32capture of Kupyansk, a strategically important city in Ukraine's Kharkiv region.
00:39Yes, Comrade Supreme Commander-in-Chief, the armed forces of the Russian Federation continue to
00:43carry out their operations as part of the special military operation. We are advancing
00:48almost across almost all areas, furthering the success that has been reached during the
00:55summer campaign. The enemy tries to stop our troops. It's concentrated on trying to destabilize
01:02the situation in the Krastar Misk direction. The Sever army group continues to create in
01:13Tsumskaya and Kharkov region, their own checkpoints and move further, liberating Volchansk and other
01:29towns. We have also liberated Kupyansk and continue to destroy Ukrainian troops near Oskol River.
01:42Video released by Russia's defense ministry even showed troops raising the Russian flag over what
01:49they claimed was liberated Kupyansk. For the Kremlin, this was presented as a turning point
01:55triumph in the long, grinding war. Putin praised his generals, attacked the criminal Kiev regime,
02:03and asserted that victory for Russia was inevitable. Officials insisted that Russia's group of forces
02:10West had fully taken control of Kupyansk and crushed remaining Ukrainian positions along the Oskol River.
02:18But outside of Kremlin-controlled media, the story collapsed almost immediately. Ukraine's military
02:24leadership wasted no time calling the Russian announcement outright fiction. The Ukrainian army
02:31general staff released a firm statement insisting Kupyansk remains under Ukrainian control with
02:38counter-sabotage operations ongoing inside and around the city. Ukrainian media reported that Russian
02:45troops had only managed to infiltrate small groups of soldiers, far from seizing the city. Estimates
02:52suggested these scattered Russian units numbered around 40 men hiding in northern districts while
02:58Ukrainian forces systematically hunted them down. Ukrainian commanders described Russia's claim
03:04as nothing more than an informational lie meant to mask heavy Russian casualties and ongoing battlefield
03:12struggles. Kupyansk isn't just another dot on the map. Before the war, it was an industrial hub of
03:1927,000 people, and a logistical prize. Russia captured it early in 2022, but Ukraine liberated it in a stunning
03:28counter-offensive later that year. Since then, Kupyansk has become a symbolic battleground.
03:35Russia sees it as a key gateway to pushing deeper into Kharkiv region. Ukraine views it as a line that must not be
03:42broken, both strategically and morally. That's why Kremlin leadership showcased the victory with such theatrical
03:50flair, and why Ukraine fought back so aggressively against the claim. The clash over Kupyansk reveals
03:58something bigger. This conflict is as much about controlling the narrative as controlling territory.
04:04Russia is directly linked to Russia's history.
