Surf lifesavers have come together to observe two minutes of silence before the start of morning patrols at Bondi beach to honour the 15 victims of the terrorist attack. Standing shoulder to shoulder, other clubs across the country will also pause and look out to sea at their local beaches before starting the day's duties.

00:00Some really quite incredible scenes here at Bondi Beach this morning.
00:07Lifesavers from the North Bondi and the Bondi Surf Club joining together in uniform with lifeguards
00:14and they fanned out across the length of the whole of Bondi Bay
00:19and they then held hands and observed a two-minute silence in tribute to the 15 people
00:25who lost their lives in the terrorist attack here on Sunday.
00:29It was a chance to honour the victims, to show solidarity with the Jewish community
00:35but also a chance for surf lifesavers to come together.
00:38Many of them were first responders to the attack.
00:42People sought shelter in the surf clubhouses and were also treated there by the lifesavers
00:49who of course go through regular first aid training.
00:53I spoke to one of those who took part about what it had meant.
00:57It was quite healing and obviously listening to the waves and letting the events wash away in a way
01:03but standing shoulder to shoulder I think a lot of those first responders that were on the beach today
01:08like lifeguards and basically bridged the gap between ambulances coming in.
01:15Now also down here this morning was the Governor General Sam Molston
01:19and we also saw the MP for the neighbouring constituency Matt Thistlethwaite.
01:27He is a surf lifesaver himself from a neighbouring club so he was part of that tribute
01:33but he also came to tell the clubs that the federal government will give them $100,000 each
01:38to replenish the first aid supplies that were essentially gutted in the response to the attack.
01:45I put it to Matt Thistlethwaite that the federal opposition said that the federal government's response to the attack
01:54has been too little too late.
01:57I think that now is a time for us to show bipartisan shipment cooperation.
02:01I think the Australian people want us to come together, to unite, to support the Jewish community,
02:07to do what it takes to put in place measures to protect them and the wider Australian community into the future.
02:15Bondi very much in many ways returning to normal now
02:19and yet at the site of that makeshift memorial where people continue to lay flowers,
02:25the grief is still very much raw and there's a sense now of people gearing up towards a national day of reflection tomorrow.
02:33The focal point of that of course will be here at Bondi.
