Turning Point USA: U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson delivered a forceful speech at the Turning Point USA America Fest summit in Phoenix, warning that the United States is locked in a battle between “two worldviews.” Speaking at the first TPUSA gathering since the assassination of founder Charlie Kirk, Johnson urged conservatives to defend America’s founding principles, linking faith, freedom, and constitutional governance to the country’s survival. He framed the 2026 midterms as a decisive moment for the republic, praised Donald Trump’s return to the White House, and credited Republicans with reshaping policy on borders, taxes, energy, and culture. Johnson called on supporters to honor Kirk’s legacy by advancing his principles, engaging in debate with conviction and compassion, and resisting what he described as efforts to dismantle the nation’s foundations.

00:00Thank you so much. So good to see everybody.
00:12We are so grateful to be with you here at the end of historic year in Congress,
00:18on the eve of our great nation's 250th birthday.
00:22And that's right.
00:23And in the midst of this epic and fateful battle that truly will determine the future of our great republic,
00:34Charlie Kirk understood that better than anyone.
00:38And as you've heard here over the last few days, we're no longer in a battle,
00:42no longer in a contrast just between Republicans and Democrats.
00:45We're in a contrast between two completely different diametrically opposed worldviews.
00:51Charlie stood for that.
00:53I knew him a long time.
00:54And yes, Andy Biggs, we're going to work on that statue in the Capitol, okay?
01:12Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Charlie! Thank you for that. Thank you for that. I knew Charlie a long time. I came up in the conservative movement. For about 20 years before I got to Congress, I served as a constitutional law attorney.
01:38And so my job was to go into the courts and defend religious freedom and marriage and family and the sanctity of human life. I came across a lot of people during those years. I don't think, when I was doing the work in the courts and the court of public opinion, I don't think there was anyone else who handled that court of public opinion better than Charlie Kirk. And that's why we love his legacy so much.
02:29There are two very important things that all of us can and should do. I think we should advance his principles, and I think we should adopt his approach.
02:37Now, let me talk about the first one, advancing his principles. See, what Charlie stood for was very well known by everybody. He was a man of deep faith and conviction, as we know.
02:47He was a man who was truly authentic, and that's what drew everybody into the message. That was the great power of his message, was that it came so deep from his heart.
02:55It was authentic. Charlie believed in the things that Scripture says we should focus on, the things that are praiseworthy and noble and good.
03:04He believed and he preached faith and family and freedom and virtue and patriotism.
03:11See, Charlie understood we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world, and it's not even close, and we all know that.
03:18Charlie had a great talent of explaining why we live in the most successful, most benevolent, most free, most powerful nation that's ever been.
03:30It's really not even close. And he did that so well.
03:34Because, see, Charlie understood. The reason he was so passionate about that message is he knew that it is easy to take freedom away from a people if they do not understand the source of it.
03:43I love that he read Psalm 11, 3, not just as a rhetorical question, but as a call to arms.
03:51You know that Scripture. It says, if the foundations be destroyed, what will the righteous do?
03:57It's our call to arms as well.
03:59To save our country, all of us have to defend the foundations and advance these truths.
04:03So what I wanted to do in just a couple of short minutes here is give you what I think may be a helpful illustration that you can use as well.
04:10I've been doing this for the last few years, because I'm going into these college auditoriums and sometimes on these large stages, and usually I have a whiteboard, I request a whiteboard.
04:21And I go through what I just say is a word picture, five simple words to explain why we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world.
04:30This is important for us to do right now because so few people understand it anymore.
04:34So let me offer this illustration to you, and maybe you can use it as well.
04:37You don't need a whiteboard. You can do it on a napkin or a small piece of paper.
04:39But here's what I do. I go up on the board, and I write five words on the board.
04:43I go to the top, and I write G-O-D, all big capital letters at the top.
04:47I go halfway down the board, and I write KING, lowercase k.
04:52The bottom of the board, I write the people, backslash the subjects.
04:56And then I draw a bunch of arrows down from the king to the people.
04:59I back up, and I look at the whiteboard, and I say, see, this is a graphic illustration, a graphic word picture,
05:05of what would be defined as the philosophy of the divine right of kings.
05:08It's an old European medieval notion that other countries bought into before ours came along.
05:14And it explains this basic idea.
05:16They believed that there was a god somewhere hovering high in the heavens, but the real boss,
05:21the earthly boss, the sovereign, was the king.
05:24And the king was the one that could give you all your rights, tell you what property you can hold,
05:28sometimes who you can marry, what you may do for a living, et cetera.
05:31The king was the boss.
05:32Well, in 1776, a group of faithful patriots came along.
05:36Yeah?
05:37And they deeply considered this old medieval philosophy, and they said, that's not right.
05:45The king is a tyrant.
05:46The king has taken away our rights.
05:49Now, you might know that many of them were seminarians.
05:51They were students of scripture.
05:53They understood the real truth.
05:55And they said, this is not what this is all about.
05:57G.K. Chesterton was a famous British philosopher, and he said one time,
06:00America is the only nation in the world that is founded upon a creed,
06:05and it's listed with almost theological lucidity in the Declaration of Independence.
06:08What is a creed?
06:09We hold these truths to be self-evident.
06:11Now, when I'm in a big audience of university students, I'll say, hold on, wait a minute.
06:14What is a self-evident truth?
06:16Something that's obvious?
06:17We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
06:21Wait a minute.
06:21It doesn't say just born equal.
06:23It says created equal.
06:24Okay.
06:26By someone.
06:27We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.
06:30They are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, and among these are the
06:32rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
06:35It was such a revolutionary statement at the time.
06:37You know why?
06:38Because we shattered that old paradigm, that old philosophy.
06:41And effectively, I go to the whiteboard, I take the eraser, and I erase the word king
06:45off the board.
06:46I erase all the arrows that went down from the king to the people and the subjects, and
06:50I erase the word the subjects.
06:51The only two words left on the board, three words, God and the people.
06:55So then I draw all the arrows straight down to the people.
06:58And I step back and I say, that, my friends, is the root of our Judeo-Christian heritage.
07:04That is the root of the truth that made us the greatest nation in the history of the world.
07:08That's it.
07:08Many years after the founding, Abraham Lincoln famously summarized it in the Gettysburg Address.
07:20He said, we are dedicated to this proposition, that we are one nation under God, and that
07:24a government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.
07:28But then we have to explain the next part.
07:30Why did that make us so successful?
07:33Because of the implications of that worldview.
07:35See, you understand the difference between that and what the other nations were pursuing
07:39before us.
07:40See, what Lincoln was talking about is if we're going to have a self-governing people, we have
07:45to have responsibility that goes along with that.
07:48The founders understood that you had to have a basic moral consensus to keep a constitutional
07:53republic.
07:55George Washington was the father of our country.
07:56He famously said in his farewell address, of all the dispositions and habits which lead
08:00to political prosperity, religion, and morality are indispensable supports.
08:05John Adams came next.
08:06He said, our constitution is made only for a moral and religious people.
08:09It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.
08:13The other implication that comes from that is that because we are made by a creator, remember
08:17the framers, the founders were students of scripture.
08:19They understood every single person is made in the image of God.
08:24And there's big time implications that come from that.
08:28You know what it means?
08:29Yeah.
08:33So the meaning of that is so important because it means every single person has inestimable
08:38dignity and value.
08:40And your value is not related in any way to the color of your skin and what zip code you
08:43live in and what your major is in college.
08:44Your value is inherent because it is given to you by God.
08:48And no one can take that away.
08:50No one can take that away.
08:51The founders built our country on the premise that our rights do not come from the state.
09:01They do not come from the government.
09:03They come from God himself.
09:04And that is what has made us the great nation that we are.
09:10Now, look, real quick to close the illustration.
09:13Then I say, when I'm in a university campus, I say, but you know what the problem is?
09:16Over the last few generations, we have strayed from these foundational truths.
09:20The foundations are being destroyed.
09:21I take an eraser.
09:22I go back to the board and I erase G-O-D because now there's this movement that denies the creator
09:28himself, denies his commands and his orders and all the things that ordered our liberty
09:34in the beginning.
09:36And that is the problem.
09:37And that is why freedom is imperiled.
09:38And that is why we're in a war in this culture to save the greatest nation, this great republic
09:43of ours.
09:44The best way to restore it is to return and restore those foundations, to return God to
09:50the top and to remember who we are beneath him.
09:58Look, Charlie knew those foundational truths and he evangelized them better than anybody
10:03I know.
10:03And now we all have to do the same.
10:06So the first principle is advance his principles.
10:08And the second one is adopt his approach.
10:11I just want to say this to state the obvious and you all know it.
10:14I'm delighted to follow the professor Glenn Beck here this morning.
10:18His message was spot on.
10:20See, Charlie loved a vigorous debate, but he loved people more.
10:26That's the secret, right?
10:29He took to heart the biblical admonitions.
10:32Among them are a few.
10:321 Peter 3.15.
10:33Always be prepared to give an answer for the hope that you have.
10:37I love 2 Timothy 2, and Charlie did as well.
10:40Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not be ashamed, rightly
10:46handling the word of truth.
10:48Charlie also loved 1 Corinthians 16, verse 13.
10:52Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong, but let all that you do
10:58be done in love.
10:59And as radical and as powerful as it is, Jesus reminded us, you're supposed to love even your
11:06enemies.
11:07That's our calling.
11:08Charlie was never motivated by hate for anyone.
11:11That's why he was such a great example.
11:12That's why his legacy lives on as it is, because he was driven by that powerful truth.
11:18After every debate, he was always the very first person to reach out a hand of friendship
11:22to someone or offer an arm around the shoulder of someone who he felt was lost.
11:27Because in so many places, in so many cases, the person on the other side of the table
11:31actually was lost in a very real sense, not just philosophically, but spiritually.
11:36And it was about this eternal battles.
11:39Charlie, our friend Charlie, served sacrificially to pull people back from the abyss.
11:45He didn't do it just to save a country.
11:48Even more importantly, he did it to save souls.
11:52And that's what we have to remember, especially on this Sunday.
11:54All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.
12:05And your presence here today shows that you're in the category of those who do much.
12:10I want to thank you, thank you, for all your willingness to stand and engage in this battle
12:14right now.
12:15It's never been more important than it is right now.
12:18And I want to thank you all for what you did in last fall's election, returning Donald
12:23J. Trump to the White House, yes.
12:31And allowing us to keep the majorities in Congress, in the House and Senate.
12:36Now, let me tell you something.
12:38In spite of the media's desperate efforts to paint a different picture, we worked arm-in-arm
12:44with President Trump over the last 12 months, and we have had one of the most consequential
12:48historic Congresses in the history of this country.
12:51Let me bring you a couple of these.
12:52Yeah.
12:54America is looking at a split screen right now, okay?
12:57On one side is President Trump and our majorities in Congress delivering on our promises.
13:02Look, a short list.
13:03We ended the border crisis, right?
13:05In very short order.
13:06We are working right now to solve the crime crisis in all these major cities around the
13:14country.
13:15We passed the largest tax cut in U.S. history, and at the same time, the largest spending
13:19cut in U.S. history.
13:25We are restoring American energy dominance.
13:28We are bringing down the cost of living, and we are rooting out fraud, waste, and abuse
13:33in this government.
13:36We kicked illegal aliens off of taxpayer benefits.
13:42I think you'd like that.
13:48We slashed funding to USAID, PBS, and NPR.
13:53Yes.
13:56They were too woke, and you know what we did as well?
13:59We kicked biological men out of women's sports, and so much more.
14:06In the last 12 months, we've codified more than 70 of President Trump's nation-shaping executive
14:14orders, and that's so far.
14:16And meanwhile, he's been reforming every agency of the federal government and restoring peace
14:21through strength again.
14:22We desperately needed all of it.
14:24All of that is in the past 12 months.
14:31We have so much more to do.
14:32And by the way, we did it with the smallest margins in U.S. history.
14:35I mean, every day.
14:36Every day.
14:36On the other side of that split screen, in quick summary, you see the radical left Marxist
14:43Democrats, and they are being overrun by the Marxists.
14:46They truly are.
14:47This is not your father's Democrat party anymore.
14:49And they want to dismantle the very foundations of our republic and everything that we all stand
14:53for and that Charlie Kirk evangelized.
14:56Everything, as has been said here, everything is on the line in the midterms of 2026, and
15:02we have much more to do.
15:04But if we lose the House majority, the radical left, as you've already heard, is going to
15:08impeach President Trump.
15:09They're going to create absolute chaos.
15:11We cannot let that happen, and I know you won't.
15:14I know you won't.
15:21I want to leave you with three things.
15:22If we refuse to let the left and the mainstream media lie without being challenged, it's our
15:28job to challenge it.
15:29If we refuse to let outside forces divide us, as Glenn Beck said so well, and if we all will
15:36do as Charlie did, and that is fight like happy warriors, advance his principles, and adopt
15:43his approach, we will win next year, and we will save the greatest nation in the history
15:49of the world.
15:52We're going to do it together.
