00:00What are you trying to do with the message you're sending?
00:02Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the most painfully awkward
00:07or disturbing celebrity interviews that left us all squirming.
00:11Aren't there moments where a guy like crashes in the corner like,
00:14oh my god, it's all my mom's fault? Shut up. Shut up. Stop. Move forward.
00:20Number 10, Hugh Grant.
00:22And the Academy Award for the most awkward red carpet interview goes to...
00:26Hugh Grant.
00:27Are you excited to see anybody win? Do you have your hopes up for anyone?
00:32Um, not, no one in particular.
00:36The British actor raised eyebrows at the 2023 Oscars when he stopped for a brief chat with
00:40model and TV presenter Ashley Graham. Grant quickly made it painfully clear he'd rather be
00:45anywhere else, offering blunt, almost comically short answers to every question.
00:50Okay, well, what are you wearing tonight then?
00:53Just my suit.
00:54Your suit? Who made your suit? You didn't make it.
00:56Um, I can't remember. My tailor.
00:58That's okay. Shout out to the tailor.
01:01Even when Graham tried to inject some enthusiasm by asking about his experience filming Glass
01:05Onion, Grant shut it down with a reply so lifeless it could have been the subject of its own murder
01:11mystery.
01:11How fun is it to shoot something like that?
01:14Well, I'm barely in it. I'm in it for about three seconds.
01:16Yeah, but still, you showed up and you had fun, right?
01:19Uh, almost.
01:20Once the interview hit the internet, it went viral, with some criticizing Grant for being rude,
01:25while others chalked it up to classic British humor.
01:29Number 9. Bobcat Goldthwaite
01:30Comedian Bobcat Goldthwaite is famous for his wild antics on stage, and when he was invited on
01:36The Tonight Show with Jay Leno in 1994, he brought some of them along.
01:40Well, do you see yourself as a role model for our young people?
01:42I think I'm an excellent role model for children.
01:45Really? Really?
01:45I think they need more role models like me.
01:47During the interview, Goldthwaite, who was apparently furious over the cancellation of
01:52The Arsenio Hall Show, decided to stage a protest by setting the guest chair on fire.
01:57Well, it is sweeps, and I love Jay very much, and I thought, well, what if I, I don't know,
02:03what if I set his furniture on fire?
02:05It was a stunt that could have gone horribly wrong, but thankfully, Leno doused the flames
02:09with his water, and then made Goldthwaite sit in the now charred seat.
02:13Whatever point the comedian was trying to make, got lost in the smoke.
02:16Instead, he ended up getting charged with a misdemeanor, fined $2,700, and forced to film
02:21a series of fire safety PSAs.
02:24Where's it going now?
02:28Number 8. Mariah Carey
02:30For an interviewer, breaking juicy celebrity news must be thrilling.
02:40But you'd think a seasoned talk show host would know when to exercise a little restraint.
02:44Back in 2008, Mariah Carey appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, mid-rumours that she
02:49was pregnant.
02:50The other thing is that people are saying that you're pregnant.
02:55There's rumours.
02:56Don't discuss that.
02:57In reality, she had been dealing with fertility issues, and wasn't ready to go public with
03:02the news yet.
03:02That didn't stop DeGeneres, who, despite Carey's glaring discomfort, pulled out a bottle of champagne
03:07and dared her to drink.
03:09Carey then faked a sip, which pretty much confirmed the news, and led to DeGeneres screaming in
03:14delight.
03:14Looking back, the singer described the moment as extremely uncomfortable, made even worse
03:27by the heartbreaking fact that she miscarried soon after.
03:31Number 7.
03:32Samuel L. Jackson
03:33It doesn't speak well of you if you're an entertainment reporter, and you can't tell
03:36two very famous actors apart, especially when they look nothing alike.
03:41During a 2014 interview with Samuel L. Jackson, KTLA anchor Sam Rubin asked him about his
03:54recent Super Bowl ad.
03:55There was just one problem.
03:57Jackson hadn't been in one.
03:58Rubin had actually mistaken him for Laurence Fishburne, who reprised his role from The Matrix
04:03in a commercial that year.
04:05You're as crazy as the people on Twitter.
04:06Right.
04:07I'm not Laurence Fishburne.
04:09That's my fault.
04:10I know that.
04:10That was my fault.
04:11My mistake.
04:12You know what?
04:13We don't all look alike.
04:14Once the blunder was out there, there was no taking it back.
04:17Morgan Freeman wasted no time calling Rubin out, reminding him that not all black actors
04:22look alike.
04:23Of course, Rubin was clearly embarrassed and quickly offered an apology to Danny Glover.
04:27Really?
04:28I apologize.
04:30I'm the other guy.
04:31I'm the other guy.
04:33The other one.
04:33What's in your wallet?
04:35Number 6.
04:36Vin Diesel
04:36Sometimes an awkward interview is the host or reporter's fault.
04:40Other times, like in this instance, it's the celebrity who's to blame.
04:43Oh, God.
04:45Why me?
04:46I put Vin Diesel on Google and that came up.
04:49That's so funny.
04:50Can I see it?
04:51In 2016, Brazilian YouTuber Carol Moreira was simply doing her job, interviewing Vin
04:56Diesel when he visited the country.
04:58But the actor had other plans.
04:59Diesel spent most of the interview shamelessly flirting, repeatedly commenting on her looks
05:03while ignoring almost all of her questions.
05:06God, you're so beautiful.
05:08My God, she's so beautiful, man.
05:11Am I right or wrong?
05:12Look at her.
05:13How am I supposed to do this interview?
05:14Look at this woman.
05:16Tell me your story.
05:17She's so beautiful.
05:18Moreira looked uncomfortable, yet she remained professional and tried to get the interview
05:23back on track, to no avail.
05:24At one point, Diesel even declared her too sexy to continue and suggested they ditched
05:29the interview for a date.
05:31Tell me your story.
05:32Tell me your story.
05:33Let's get out of here.
05:34Let's go have lunch.
05:36My God, I love her.
05:37Look how beautiful she is.
05:40God, wow.
05:41It was too fast, too furious, and way too frustrating to watch.
05:46Number 5.
05:47Jennifer Aniston
05:47There are bad interviews, and then there's whatever happened when Jennifer Aniston appeared
05:52on The Late Show with David Letterman in 1998.
05:55The film is out now.
05:57Isn't it a nice love story kind of thing?
06:00It is.
06:00It's a nice love story.
06:01Not your common love story.
06:03No, no.
06:03You tell the people what it is.
06:04Aniston was there to promote her film The Object of My Affection, but somehow became
06:08the object of a truly bizarre moment.
06:11As she casually chatted, Letterman crept up behind her and sucked on a strand of her hair.
06:15He then handled her a tissue to wipe it off.
06:26What purpose did this weird act serve, you might ask?
06:29Well, we'll never know, because Letterman brushed past it and simply forged ahead.
06:34You know, how can you mix the two, love and friendship and…
06:37You're still traumatized by that hair deal, aren't you?
06:38I am.
06:39I don't know.
06:39Sorry.
06:40I just described another movie, didn't I?
06:44Well, I hope you'll be able to get over this.
06:47Years later, in a 2013 interview with Lindsay Lohan, Letterman proves that old habits die
06:52hard, as he relentlessly pressed the actress about her time in rehab despite her obvious
06:57discomfort.
06:58What are they going to work on when you walk through the door?
07:00We didn't discuss this in the pre-interview.
07:05Number 4.
07:06Kanye West
07:06Ever since he rose to fame in the early 2000s, Kanye West has made so many inflammatory remarks
07:12that it would be easier to list the few that weren't controversial.
07:15I just love Trump.
07:16That's my boy.
07:18Like, you know, it's like so many rappers, you'll look at a video of Snoop Dogg loving
07:22Trump, but then he get in the office and I don't love him.
07:24Like, Trump is one of rap's favorite people, right?
07:27One of his most shocking comments came during a 2018 interview at the TMZ headquarters.
07:32When asked about his support for Donald Trump, West veered into a rant in which he seemed
07:36to suggest that slavery was a choice.
07:38You hear about slavery for 400 years?
07:41For 400 years?
07:42That sounds like a choice.
07:44Like, you was there for 400 years and it's all of y'all?
07:48His remarks left the room in stunned silence.
07:51Eventually, TMZ host Van Lathan spoke up, voicing out the disappointment that everyone
07:56was feeling and urging West to do better.
07:58Frankly, I'm disappointed.
08:00I'm appalled.
08:02And brother, I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something,
08:09to me, that's not real.
08:10Clearly, Lathan's words went in one ear and out the other, as West racked up plenty more
08:15controversies since then.
08:17Number three, Charlie Sheen.
08:18Almost every actor in Hollywood would do anything to earn $1.8 million per episode on a TV show.
08:24Charlie Sheen had that and threw it all away when he picked an unnecessary fight with Chuck
08:29Laurie, the creator of Two and a Half Men, which got him fired.
08:33I don't remember.
08:34I do not remember.
08:35A week ago?
08:36Two weeks ago?
08:37Maybe a month ago?
08:37Two days ago?
08:38Six weeks ago.
08:38I don't know.
08:39I don't know.
08:39It was a couple days before the suits rolled in and said, change it.
08:43Change everything.
08:43We're shutting you down.
08:44Amid the scandal, Sheen appeared on Good Morning America, where he attempted to assure the
08:48public that he was unfazed by his dismissal.
08:51However, his erratic behavior during the interview, where he famously declared himself bi-winning
08:56and claimed to have cured himself of substance use disorder, only made people more concerned.
09:01Wow.
09:01And then what?
09:02What's the cure?
09:02Medicine?
09:04Make me like them?
09:05Not gonna happen.
09:06I'm bi-winning.
09:08I win here and I win there.
09:10Now what?
09:10We weren't the only ones who found this interview uncomfortable.
09:13Even Sheen himself later admitted that it was a little bit cringable.
09:17Can't is the cancer of happen.
09:20Can't is the cancer of happen.
09:22I can't do it.
09:23The Nike slogan doesn't say, just try it.
09:25Oh, okay.
09:26Just try it.
09:27No, just do it, man.
09:29Number two, Britney Spears.
09:30Britney Spears' life has long been a subject of public scrutiny.
09:34Back in 2003, when the pop singer was just 21, she sat down for an interview with veteran
09:38broadcaster Diane Sawyer.
09:40Where I come from, I come from the South, and my mom invites people over, the fans outside
09:45for tea.
09:46I'm like, mama, you can't do that, you know?
09:48That's how I am at Nate, like, that's how I am.
09:51I'm like an open person, you know?
09:52What should have been a regular conversation quickly turned into an interrogation, as Sawyer
09:56grilled Spears about her high-profile split from Justin Timberlake, essentially blaming
10:00her for it.
10:01He's left the impression that you weren't faithful, that you betrayed the relationship.
10:10I think everyone has a side to their story.
10:13As if that wasn't bad enough, Sawyer then appeared to justify a statement from the then
10:17First Lady of Maryland, who had openly said that she wanted to attack Spears for being
10:21a bad influence.
10:23Because of the example for kids and how hard it is to be a parent and keep all of this
10:27away from your kids.
10:28At one point, the singer felt overwhelmed and broke down in tears, but that did little
10:36to stop Sawyer from pressing on.

10:54Number one, R. Kelly.
10:56How stupid would it be for me to, with my crazy past and what I've been through, oh,
11:03right now I just think I need to be a monster and hold girls against their will.
11:08Throughout his career, R. Kelly has been dogged by allegations of sexual assault and predatory
11:12behavior.
11:13He managed to escape conviction in 2008, but when these allegations resurfaced in the 2019
11:18docu-series Surviving R. Kelly, there was no slipping away.
11:22Here's this person in front of me that I think is like the world, and he walked up to me and
11:27gave me a hug and I kind of like just, I was kind of frozen.
11:31Shortly after he was criminally charged in Illinois, Kelly appeared in a contentious
11:35interview with Gayle King.
11:37For 80 exhausting minutes, he insisted that he was innocent of the allegations.
11:41He even put on a grand show, pounding his chest and yelling at the cameras.
11:4530 years of my career, but y'all trying to kill me.
11:51You're killing me, man.
11:53This ain't not about music.
11:56I'm trying to have a relationship with my kids.
11:58If Kelly was aiming for sympathy, he completely missed the mark, as his aggressive display
12:02only made him look unhinged.
12:04The evidence against this singer continued to mount, and he was eventually sentenced to
12:08a combined 31-year term.
