00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the moments when the king of the kaiju unleashed
00:05his most devastating, jaw-dropping, and downright savage displays of power.
00:16Number 20. Dominating Kong in Hong Kong. Godzilla vs. Kong.
00:28When Godzilla and Kong have their epic clash in Hong Kong, the king of the monsters makes it immediately clear
00:34that this is going to be a devastating fight.
00:45Sure, Kong puts up a fierce resistance, using his agility and battle axe to land some serious blows.
00:51But Godzilla is bigger, stronger, and absolutely relentless.
00:55He blasts Kong with his atomic breath, pursues him through the city, and eventually overwhelms the giant ape in a
01:02brutal display of physical dominance.
01:04After pinning Kong to the ground, Godzilla stands over his defeated rival and roars in his face.
01:22Yep. King Kong fans might not like it, but this round belonged to Godzilla.
01:28Number 19. Terrifying Tokyo Bay. The Return of Godzilla.
01:42After nearly a decade away from Japanese theaters, Godzilla returned in 1984 with a darker, more terrifying attitude.
01:58And, well, the military quickly discovers that stopping him is easier said than done.
02:03As Godzilla approaches Tokyo Bay, Japan's forces scramble to intercept the enormous creature before he can reach the capital.
02:10They launch their assault, but their weapons do little to stop his advance.
02:26Godzilla pushes forward, shrugging off the military's attempts to contain him and pressing onward toward Tokyo.
02:32This isn't the campy monster who might team up with humanity to save the day.
02:36He is a walking nuclear catastrophe, and Japan is once again at his mercy.
02:41Number 18. Reeling in Mechagodzilla with Electromagnetic Powers.
02:46Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
02:49Godzilla has plenty of tricks up his...sleeves, but turning himself into a giant magnet might be the strangest.
02:56After getting battered by Mechagodzilla's arsenal of missiles and lasers,
03:00Godzilla absorbs electrical energy from repeated lightning strikes.
03:16Suddenly, he develops a powerful magnetic field, attracting nearby metal structures to his body.
03:22Even more impressively, he uses this newfound ability to pull the fleeing Mechagodzilla back toward him.
03:38The robotic monster tries to escape by flying away, but Godzilla's magnetism keeps dragging it back into range.
03:45With its opponent grounded, Godzilla gets hold of Mechagodzilla and ultimately tears off its head.
03:50Talk about a shocking comeback.
04:01Number 17. Overwhelming Space Godzilla.
04:04Godzilla vs. Space Godzilla.
04:06Space Godzilla might be one of Godzilla's most powerful opponents,
04:10but even an extraterrestrial clone has its limits.
04:25During their climactic battle, Godzilla faces a monster armed with crystalline armor,
04:30devastating energy attacks, and the ability to manipulate its surroundings.
04:35The fight leaves Fukuoka in ruins.
04:37Once Space Godzilla's defenses are compromised, Godzilla unleashes a devastating heat ray.
04:53He keeps firing, overwhelming his opponent with a relentless barrage of energy.
04:58Space Godzilla eventually explodes in a massive fireball, bringing the battle to a fiery end.
05:12When Godzilla gets the chance to finish a fight, he does not believe in holding back.
05:25Think Godzilla's the only one bringing the heat?

05:45Number 16. Wrecking Megalon with a dropkick.
05:48Godzilla vs. Megalon.
05:50Sometimes being the king of the monsters means taking on two opponents at once.
06:03But when the insect-like Megalon teams up with the cyborg Gigan,
06:07Godzilla joins forces with the giant robot Jet Jaguar to even the odds.
06:12The resulting battle is less a serious struggle for survival and more a gloriously ridiculous wrestling match between giant monsters.
06:19Godzilla and Jet Jaguar fight back-to-back, trading blows with their two enemies.
06:24The highlight comes when Godzilla unleashes one of the franchise's most infamous moves.
06:29A flying dropkick that sends him sliding across the ground on his tail and feet first into Megalon.
06:41It is completely absurd, wonderfully over-the-top, and a reminder that Godzilla can turn any fight into a spectacle.
06:49Number 15. The original Godzilla vs. Kong battle.
06:53King Kong vs. Godzilla.
06:55Godzilla and King Kong have duped it out for monster superiority once before.
06:59And back then, it wasn't even a fair fight.
07:02Say what you will, Kong fans, but it turns out an atomic heat ray does make for a pretty big
07:07advantage.
07:09After Kong is hilariously airlifted into battle by what looks like birthday balloons,
07:15Godzilla proceeds to beat the absolute snot out of the giant ape.
07:19He doesn't stop until Kong is buried under rocks and surrounded by nuclear fire.
07:24Apparently, Godzilla takes that King of the Monsters title pretty seriously.
07:28He probably would have won had Kong not suddenly and inexplicably gotten superpowers from a bolt of lightning.
07:34Nope, you heard that right.
07:36This movie is just insane.
07:43While watching these two beasts battle it out on screen is a great way to determine which is the ultimate
07:48monster,
07:49you've got another idea in mind.
07:50Let's throw it over to the team for a head-to-head clash and see who ends up victorious.
07:54Run! It's Godzilla!
07:58It looks like Godzilla, but due to international copyright laws, it's not.
08:02Still, we should run like it is Godzilla!
08:04Though it isn't.
08:05Hello, and welcome to Simply the Best,
08:07the show where we debate the pop culture subjects we're most passionate about,
08:10but you choose the winner.
08:12I'm your moderator, Rebecca Brayton.
08:13Today's topic, Godzilla vs. King Kong.
08:16Our debaters are Yvonne on Team Godzilla vs. Matt on Team King Kong.
08:21Each debater will make their case, and then we'll leave the decision to you.
08:24So now, I welcome our speakers into the arena.
08:27Alright, Yvonne, your 30 seconds starts now.
08:30Alright, look, the king of monsters didn't get to where he is by just climbing buildings and kidnapping blonde women.
08:36He's been both hero and villain, but always a gauge for the state of humanity overall.
08:41So he was originally created as a criticism for war and the nuclear arms race,
08:45but Godzilla has been able to fit into every aspect of our own evolution
08:49as a representation of what we are and what we need.
08:52So sometimes a hero, sometimes a force of nature, and sometimes a little bit silly.
08:58But, you know what?
08:59He's always been a companion for humanity.
09:02Hell, Godzilla lore even found a place for that awful iguana-looking thing from like 1998.
09:08Look, King Kong may have started the giant monster craze back in the 30s,
09:11but ultimately it failed to evolve past the sappy romantic undertones of its original inception.
09:31All right, Matt, tell us about King Kong.
09:33Does he also like blonde women?
09:34Well, Rebecca, I like blonde women, but here's the thing.
09:38I'm picking the giant big ape with a giant big heart
09:44because that's the thing that King Kong has that Godzilla doesn't.
09:48And that's a connection that makes you actually, oh, I don't know, care what happens to him.
09:53Okay, so he could be climbing the Empire State Building.
09:55He could be throwing down in hollow earth.
09:58And he's terrifying, by the way.
10:01He's badass, but he's also weirdly lovable.
10:05Yeah, Godzilla, force of nature, whatever.
10:07But the biggest monster in the room that could actually break your heart?
10:12That's my king.
10:23Oh, Ivan, do you have anything to refute?
10:26Look, I'm sorry, but there's just one king of monsters,
10:29and he does represent the biggest heart of them all,
10:32which is Mother Earth and her wrath and care for humanity.
10:37So, you know what?
10:38Yeah, sure, stick with the monkey, go climb a tree or something.
10:41I don't know.
10:42Matt, you get the last word.
10:44I may have also undersold just how much damage King Kong can do.
10:48This guy can throw down.
10:50Don't forget it.
10:51So he's got the whole package here, including those big monkey fists.
11:10Are you Team Godzilla or King Kong?
11:12Let us know in the comments.
11:14Now, let's lock back into beast mode.
11:22Godzilla doesn't always need a power-up to dominate his opponents.
11:25Sometimes he just needs to show up.
11:35During Godzilla Final Wars, the king of the monsters faces off against a trio of kaiju,
11:40Rodan, Anguirus, and King Caesar.
11:42Even with three opponents coming at him,
11:45Godzilla proves he is more than capable of handling the challenge.
11:48The monsters throw everything they have at him,
11:51but their combined efforts fail to keep him down.
12:03Godzilla turns the fight into a showcase of brute strength,
12:06shrugging off attacks and striking back with overwhelming force.
12:18It is a perfect example of why the other monsters have good reason to fear him.
12:23Three against one?
12:24Bring it on.
12:33Number 13.
12:34Convincing humanity to leave Earth.
12:37Godzilla Planet of the Monsters.
12:38You might have noticed that Godzilla has been getting bigger as time goes on,
12:42and the idea of ratcheting up his appearance to match the increasing scale of his stories makes sense.
12:47But in one trilogy of animated movies, his growth went way off the charts.
12:56The animated version of Godzilla grew to be almost 1,000 feet tall.
13:01He also had a wide range of powers that included a more powerful radioactive blast attack,
13:05the ability to generate force fields,
13:08and the power to terraform a planet with his DNA.
13:17After his global rampage,
13:19the surviving humans evacuated planet Earth.
13:22Getting all of humanity to give up on their own home
13:25is one of the most brutal victories Godzilla ever claimed.
13:33Number 12.
13:34Getting possessed and beating down other kaiju.
13:37Godzilla, Mothra, and King Ghidorah.
13:39Giant monsters all out attack.
13:41In this film,
13:42Godzilla became a metaphor for the specter of national guilt.
13:45During the film,
13:46Godzilla gets possessed by the spirits of people killed during World War II.
13:56You can see the unearthly fury of this new form of Godzilla
13:59in his milky white eyes and ferocious expression.
14:02Godzilla beats down kaiju like Baragon,
14:05Mothra,
14:06and even King Ghidorah.
14:14It takes the combined efforts of kaiju and humans
14:17to stop him in his tracks.
14:18It was certainly an explosive way
14:20to both represent and cope
14:22with the guilt of a nation's past.
14:32Number 11.
14:34Absorbing Rodan to trash Mechagodzilla.
14:36Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla 2.
14:39Pop quiz.
14:40What's more powerful than a giant robot kaiju
14:42designed to give Godzilla a taste of his own medicine?
14:44The answer is Godzilla
14:46plus the power of a whole other kaiju
14:49coursing through his veins.
14:55While the math here might not make the most sense,
14:58the results speak for themselves.
15:00After Godzilla absorbs Rodan's energy,
15:03he proceeds to fire a volley of atomic rays
15:05at Super Mechagodzilla
15:07until it straight up explodes.
15:16Admitently, the atomic breath the hero uses here
15:19doesn't look as powerful as the attack
15:20he used against Destoroyah.
15:22However,
15:23the way he fires blast after blast
15:25against his robot doppelganger
15:27makes this a prime example
15:28of how savage Godzilla can get.
15:49Godzilla's battle against the Muto's
15:51is already a rough one,
15:52but one of his most savage moments
15:54comes when he finally gets the upper hand.
15:56After fighting his way through the city,
15:58Godzilla catches the female Muto off guard
16:00and forces her jaws open.
16:02Then, instead of simply swiping at her
16:04or blasting her from a distance,
16:06he delivers his atomic breath
16:07directly down her throat.
16:14The devastating attack tears through her neck,
16:17leaving the creature lifeless.
16:19It's a gruesome finishing move
16:21that feels like something
16:22out of a monster horror flick.
16:23And what can we say?
16:25We love it.
16:37Even people who have never seen
16:39a full Godzilla movie
16:40know that he has a knack
16:41for going on destructive rampages.
16:51When compared to the level of chaos
16:53he sows in later entries of the franchise,
16:55the way he stomped his way through Tokyo
16:57in the original film
16:58seems almost tame.
17:00Still, there's just something special
17:01about the first time, isn't there?
17:03Maybe it's because his first rampage
17:05happened right after he was awakened
17:07by the fateful nuclear test
17:08that scarred him.
17:19Or maybe it's because Godzilla
17:21takes his time to eradicate
17:23as many man-made structures
17:24as he can.
17:25No matter what draws us
17:27to this scene,
17:28his grief and fury
17:29shine through
17:30with blazing clarity.
17:38Number 8
17:39Blasting a Hole Through the Earth
17:41Godzilla vs. Kong
17:42Godzilla doesn't just want to fight Kong.
17:45He wants to make absolutely sure
17:47his rival knows he's coming.
17:55Whoa, Godzilla's responding!
17:57You see, while Kong is deep
17:58within Hollow Earth,
17:59Godzilla senses his presence
18:01and unleashes an atomic breath attack
18:03unlike anything we've seen before.
18:15Rather than aiming at another monster
18:17or city,
18:18he fires straight down into the ground,
18:20carving a massive tunnel
18:22through the Earth's crust
18:22and opening a direct path
18:24into Hollow Earth.
18:25The beam is so powerful
18:26that it reaches Kong's location
18:28far below,
18:29tearing through the temple
18:30and forcing the giant ape
18:31to find his way back
18:32to the surface.
18:33It's a ridiculous demonstration
18:34of Godzilla's power.
18:36Seriously,
18:36who needs a door
18:37when you can blast
18:38through the planet?
18:48Number 7
18:49Kicking American Godzilla's Butt
18:51Godzilla Final Wars
18:52In 1998,
18:54Hollywood attempted to re-imagine
18:56the Godzilla franchise
18:57by unleashing a drastically redesigned
19:00version of the monster
19:01on New York.
19:02It was not a critical success.
19:11Since Godzilla's original creators
19:13were not big fans
19:15of the U.S. version,
19:16they brought the despised lizard
19:18into Godzilla Final Wars.
19:19When American-Zilla dodges
19:21Godzilla's first atomic fire blast,
19:24you think the copycat
19:25might stand a chance
19:26for a second.
19:27Well,
19:27for a second.
19:31That's before Godzilla
19:33tail-slaps his copycat
19:34out of the air
19:35and into the Sydney Opera House.
19:37It's over
19:38in a shake of a kaiju tail.
19:40Godzilla couldn't resist
19:41showing Zilla
19:42how a real kaiju
19:43throws down.
19:55Godzilla feeds on radiation,
19:57but it turns out
19:58there are limits
19:59to what even he
20:00can safely consume.
20:01We see this firsthand
20:02after he feeds off
20:04a uranium deposit
20:05in Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
20:06and begins to have
20:07a meltdown.
20:08And we're not talking
20:09about a building-stomping
20:11temper tantrum.
20:11Godzilla had a nuclear meltdown
20:14that was powerful enough
20:15to destroy the whole planet.
20:22Thankfully,
20:23the movie's villain,
20:24Destoroyah,
20:24gave him somewhere
20:25to spend some of that
20:26extra energy.
20:27When the evil kaiju
20:28takes out Godzilla Jr.,
20:29the enraged Godzilla
20:31uses his excess power
20:32to unleash an infinite heat ray
20:34that absolutely wrecks Destoroyah.
20:42Although Godzilla's body
20:44ultimately couldn't
20:44handle the meltdown,
20:46he still went out
20:47as an ultra-powerful kaiju.
20:55Number 5.
20:56Evolving into Pink Godzilla
20:58Godzilla Kong,
20:59The New Empire
21:00Godzilla has gone through
21:02plenty of transformations
21:03over the years,
21:04but this one comes
21:05with a very noticeable
21:06change in color.
21:07In Godzilla Kong,
21:08The New Empire,
21:09Godzilla hunts down
21:10the titan Tiamat
21:11in the Arctic
21:12and defeats her,
21:13absorbing immense energy.
21:25The result?
21:27A newly evolved form
21:28with glowing pink dorsal plates
21:30and a serious upgrade
21:31in power.
21:39This isn't just
21:40a fresh coat of paint.
21:41Godzilla is preparing
21:42for a threat
21:43that could endanger
21:44the entire planet,
21:45and his new form
21:46helps him unleash
21:47even more devastating attacks.
21:48When the king
21:49of the monsters
21:50decides he needs
21:51an upgrade,
21:52subtlety clearly
21:53isn't part of the plan.
21:54Oh my god,
21:56it's changed.
21:57Number 4.
21:57Demolishing King Ghidorah's
21:59ultimate form,
22:00Godzilla Final Wars.
22:02Godzilla Final Wars
22:04is full of
22:04unbelievable Godzilla moments,
22:06but one of his best scenes
22:07comes after he gets
22:08supercharged
22:09by an energy weapon.
22:11Godzilla gets filled
22:12with enough power
22:13to electrocute Ghidorah
22:14just through touch.
22:15And that's just
22:16the beginning.
22:17Since Ghidorah
22:18has multiple heads,
22:19Godzilla gets creative
22:20in how he takes
22:21two of them out.
22:28When only one remains,
22:30he flips Ghidorah
22:31back and forth
22:32like a cartoon character
22:33before launching him
22:34into the atmosphere
22:35with his atomic breath.
22:43And did we mention
22:45he did this all
22:46to Ghidorah's
22:46ultimate Kaiser form?
22:48We guess when Godzilla
22:49is this tremendously strong,
22:51even your super
22:52ultimate form
22:53won't do you much good.
22:58Number 3.
23:00Shin Godzilla fires
23:01all of the heat rays.
23:03Shin Godzilla.
23:04Shin Godzilla showed us
23:05a terrifying new version
23:07of the King Kaiju.
23:08Instead of an angry
23:09but relatable monster,
23:10he's a grotesque,
23:11rapidly mutating nightmare.
23:18and nothing showcased
23:20his inhuman malevolence
23:21and power more
23:22than the movie's
23:22climactic scene.
23:23The monster seems
23:25almost sick
23:25as he bends over
23:26and belches out
23:27dark clouds of fog.
23:28But before we can
23:29get worried about him,
23:30the clouds ignite
23:31into a fireball
23:32that decimates
23:33the surrounding city.
23:42And then,
23:43he starts doing
23:44something worse.
23:46Shin Godzilla
23:46focuses the gas
23:47into a laser-like beam
23:49that destroys
23:50anything it touches.
23:58Surely that's
23:58the worst
23:59he could ever be,
24:00right?
24:00Unless he could
24:01scatter heat rays
24:02in all directions
24:03or, oh,
24:04he can do that too?
24:05That's just overkill.
24:12Number 2.
24:13Unleashing Hell on Ginza.
24:15Godzilla Minus One.
24:24After terrorizing
24:25Japan's coast,
24:26Godzilla brings
24:27his destruction
24:27straight into
24:28the heart of Tokyo.
24:29In the highly lauded
24:31Godzilla Minus One,
24:32the monster storms
24:33into Ginza,
24:34tearing through buildings
24:35and sending
24:36a passenger train
24:37flying like it's a toy.
24:39But the most terrifying
24:40moment comes
24:41when the military
24:42attempts to stop him.
24:51Godzilla's dorsal plates
24:53begin glowing blue
24:53and extending
24:54along his back and tail
24:56as he charges
24:56his atomic breath.
24:57Then,
24:58he unleashes
24:59a devastating blast
25:00blast that triggers
25:00a colossal explosion,
25:02reducing much
25:03of the surrounding
25:04district to rubble.
25:13It's a horrifying
25:15display of power
25:15that reminds us
25:16this Godzilla
25:17isn't just a monster.
25:18He is a walking nightmare.

25:43entertained?
25:50This list has been
25:52full of examples
25:52of Godzilla's
25:53awesome might.
25:54He's pulled off
25:55so many incredible feats
25:56that it's hard
25:57to figure out
25:57one moment
25:58that could top
25:58every tail lash
26:00and atomic fire blast.
26:01That was until
26:032019's
26:03Godzilla King of the Monsters.
26:05During his final fight
26:06with Ghidorah,
26:07he became so powerful
26:08that he was able
26:09to melt buildings
26:10just by standing
