00:33Godzilla
00:40Godzilla solving puzzles sounds fundamentally wrong, and yet this weird little Game Boy title makes it work.
00:47Developed by Compile and based on the earlier MSX game Gojira-kun, 1990s Godzilla sends the Kaiju King through the
00:54labyrinth of Matrix.
00:55Instead of flattening Tokyo, Godzilla pushes rocks, climbs vines and ladders, punches obstacles, and navigates increasingly complicated mazes while familiar
01:05Showa-era enemies get in the way.
01:07It's obviously not the ultimate giant monster power fantasy, but its charming presentation and surprisingly thoughtful puzzles have helped it
01:14age better than plenty of Godzilla's more ambitious games.
01:23Godzilla Trading Battle
01:38Pokemon cards apparently weren't violent enough, so naturally Toho made Godzilla cards.
01:44Released exclusively in Japan, Godzilla Trading Battle combines card collecting, strategy, and RPG-style progression with an absurdly deep catalogue
01:53of Toho monsters and machines.
02:05There are over 70 different monster and machine cards, with creatures gaining experience, leveling up, and sometimes transforming into stronger
02:12versions.
02:13Players then deploy them onto land cards, before battling for control of the field.
02:17Even better, the roster is amazing, mixing icons like Godzilla and Space Godzilla, with obscure creatures and several monsters created
02:25specifically for the game.
02:27Localization would have been nice, and it could never measure up to its pocket cousins, but it was still a
02:32decent stab at the genre all the same.
02:39You mean!
02:44Godzilla, Monster of Monsters
02:53Before giant monster fighting became Godzilla's gaming shtick, Monster of Monsters tried something considerably stranger.
03:00Godzilla and Mothra move across a tactical board representing different planets, battling invading monsters before entering side-scrolling action stages.
03:09The setup involves Planet X appearing near Earth in the distant future, and unleashing an army of classic Kaiju.
03:22The action can be repetitive, and Godzilla moves with all the urgency of somebody devoid of morning coffee.
03:28But its combination of strategy, action, and giant sprites gave NES players one of the first genuinely ambitious Godzilla adaptations.
03:36You've got to appreciate a touch of weirdness.

04:01Godzilla Battle Legends
04:11Before Pipeworks turned Kaiju brawling into multiplayer chaos, Battle Legends laid some extremely important foundations.
04:18Released for the Turbo Duo, this one-on-one fighter lets Godzilla battle through opponents drawn from across his cinematic
04:24history.
04:24The particularly clever touch is that Godzilla's appearance actually changes depending on the opponent, matching the era in which those
04:31monsters originally fought him.
04:33Face Anguirus and you'll get a 1950s Godzilla.
04:36Fight later opponents and his design changes accordingly.
04:39That attention to franchise history remains impressive even today.
04:50The controls and pacing obviously show their age, but as an early attempt to transform decades of Godzilla continuity into
04:57a playable fighting game, Battle Legends was remarkably decent.
05:02Master王 and the other players were then
05:10City Shrouded in Shadow
05:18Here's the twist.
05:19You don't play as Godzilla,
05:21You play as the unfortunate civilian standing underneath him.
05:25City Shrouded in Shadow takes the survival formula associated with the Disaster Report games
05:30and replaces earthquakes with iconic Japanese monsters and mecha.
05:34Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah appear alongside characters from Ultraman, Evangelion
05:39and others, while all you can do is desperately run through collapsing cities trying not to
05:43become collateral damage.
05:45Technically, it's messy.
05:47Performance can be rough and gameplay is often simplistic, but the concept is inspired.
05:52Most Godzilla games ask how awesome it would feel to be Godzilla.
05:56This one asks, how horrifying would it be if Godzilla actually showed up?
06:02Very.
06:11Domination.
06:18Turning Destroy All Monsters Melee into a Game Boy Advance game sounds like trying to fit Godzilla
06:23himself into a carry-on bag.
06:24WayForward somehow pulled it off.
06:27Domination shrinks the arena brawler concept into an isometric handheld fighter, featuring
06:32Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah, Rodan, Megalon and Mechagodzilla.
06:37Players can punch, kick, guard, unleash special attacks and destroy buildings to generate energy
06:41for devastating super moves.
06:43It even supports multiple match types and four player battles with the necessary hardware.
06:57Critics were divided, but there's something undeniably impressive about capturing this much
07:02kaiju chaos on a handheld.
07:19Super Godzilla.
07:26Super Godzilla definitely isn't the most conventional Godzilla game, and that's precisely
07:31why fans still remember it.
07:32Rather than another straightforward brawler, players guide Godzilla around tactical maps
07:37before entering unusual one-on-one battles, where positioning and his fighting spirit determine
07:42which cinematic attacks become available.
07:53The real attraction though is the monster roster and mythology.
07:57Godzilla battles the likes of Biolante, Bactra, Mecha King Ghidorah and finally Bagan, the legendary
08:04unused Toho monster who has since become a cult favourite, largely because of this game.
08:09Godzilla can even transform into the massively powered up Super Godzilla form for the final
08:14confrontation.
08:15It's quickly become a cult game for those who adore the King's deepest lore cuts.
08:34Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters Melee.
08:37Fight!
08:44This is where Godzilla games finally understood the assignment.
08:49Destroy All Monsters Melee drops famous Toho creatures into giant destructible arenas, and
08:54essentially says,
08:55Go wreck everything.
08:57Buildings become weapons, monsters throw each other across cities, atomic breath tears through
09:02opponents, and up to four players can transform local multiplayer into beautifully irresponsible
09:08property damage.
09:09Most importantly, it established the template fans still reference whenever somebody announces
09:14another Godzilla game.
09:20The roster isn't as large as later Pipeworks titles, but the simplicity works in its favour.
09:26Pick Monster, Destroy Friend.
09:40Godzilla, Kaiju Dai Kessen.
09:53If you've ever wanted Street Fighter, but everyone weighs 300,000 tons, this is remarkable.
09:59Kaiju Dai Kessen, sometimes referred to as Godzilla Monster War, is a traditional 2D fighter.
10:05Players choose from a lineup of famous Toho monsters and battle using surprisingly elaborate
10:09special moves, distinct play styles, and wonderfully chunky sprites that still capture the aesthetics
10:15of the films beautifully.
10:17A North American version was even planned under the title Godzilla Destroy All Monsters, but
10:22unfortunately never materialized.
10:24Which is a shame, because this remains one of Godzilla's strongest fighting games.
10:28No gimmicks, no motion controls, just two enormous monsters punching each other until
10:33Tokyo's insurance market collapses.
10:44If you love games, be sure to check out WatchMojo's new game, Terrible Influence.
10:49Just launched for purchase at TerribleInfluence.com.

11:07Influence.
11:10Save the Earth.
11:19Many Godzilla fans still consider this the complete Kaiju playground.
11:24Save the Earth takes everything Destroy All Monsters' melee established and goes bigger.
11:28The roster expands beyond 18 classic Toho monsters, including Mothra and multiple Godzilla incarnations.
11:41Battles take place over numerous destructible environments, while the Xbox release even supported
11:46online multiplayer.
11:47Critics were relatively lukewarm, but the audience responses always told another story.
11:52For long term fans, the expanded combat, beam clashes, monster selection, fan service,
11:58and wonderfully chaotic battles made this THE Godzilla game to own.
