00:19a sector considered key to economic recovery and the generation of new foreign currency for the country.
00:25In Chile, wildfires continue burning through the provinces of Biobío and Nuevo León, leaving 20 dead and over 26,000 hectares of forest burned.
00:44And in Spain, although he said the death toll from the train accident occurred on Sunday, in Córdoba rose to 40.
00:51Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Luis Alberto Matos from Dele Sous Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin with the news.
01:04In Venezuela, the government moves forward with a plan to consolidate the growth of its mining industry,
01:24a sector considered key to economic recovery and the regeneration of new foreign currency for the country.
01:31Acting President Dele Sous Rodriguez led a work meeting with the mining and basic industry sector
01:37to evaluate strategies to increase the production of gold and other strategic minerals.
01:42Rodriguez emphasized that mining has become a fundamental element in the growth of the gross domestic wealth.
01:53The Acting President also assured that the nation's mineral wealth is intended exclusively to guarantee the well-being of the Venezuelan people
02:03and to protect national sovereignty from external interests.
02:23Also, the Acting President of Venezuela, Dele Sous Rodriguez, presented the balance sheet of growth in gold production
02:30and explained how these resources are allocated to the social and sports development of the nation.
02:36I would like to share some figures regarding gold production in 2025.
02:47We produced 9.5 tons of gold with the private sector growing by 34.8% and the public sector by 81%.
02:56What are we looking for now? To increase gold production by 2026 throughout our own efforts.
03:03What covers gold production in our country? Well, it maintains foreign service and allows for the financing of our athletes
03:11to attend international competitions and fulfill their international agenda on the way to the Olympics.
03:18It is gold for the development of our people, for social development, for economic development,
03:26and it is the use and employment of our resources for the happiness of the Venezuelan people.
03:38And on Monday, Venezuela's Acting President Dele Sous Rodriguez announced new government appointments via her Telegram channel.
03:45The Acting President of Venezuela, Dele Sous Rodriguez, reported on her Telegram account
03:48that Calixto Ortega takes over as President of the International Center for Productive Investment.
03:53This appointment will enable the continued attraction of domestic and international investment
03:57through the national productive system during this stage of economic recovery.
04:00In addition, Acting President Dele Sous Rodriguez shared that she appointed Dr. Nurami Josefa Gutierrez Gonzalez
04:06as the new Minister of Popular Power for Health. This Venezuelan professional has dedicated her life to this sector
04:12and will further develop health care and protection policies aimed at the people.
04:16I would also like to express my gratitude to Dr. Magali Gutierrez Viña, who will continue as President of the Venezuelan Institute of Social Security.
04:23Meanwhile, in Mexico, citizens gathered in front of the U.S. Embassy to express their solidarity with Venezuela
04:36and reject the United States' interventionist policies in the region.
04:39Protesters demanded an end to hostility against the South American nation and called for the release of President Nicolas Maduro
04:48and First Lady Silvia Flores. As for their agenda, the demonstrators announced that they will boycott the World Cup,
04:55which they described as a protest against what they consider to be interference by Washington.
05:01The formal constitution of the broad anti-imperialist front is expected to be completed on February 14th,
05:06with the objective of consolidating a permanent platform for mobilization throughout the country.
05:11And in Honduras, the transition to a de facto government led by the National Party is moving forward
05:26amid questions following an election deemed illegal at all three levels.
05:30President Xiomara Castro ordered the transition to the de facto government of Nasri Asfura,
05:35the president endorsed by the United States, while various sectors have questioned the government cabinet's lack of knowledge.
05:40The Liberty and We Foundation party on the Honduran people have denounced the appointment as a coup perpetrated by the two-party system in Honduras with U.S. interference.
05:49In this context, the country prepares for the political transition to an administration that is already rejected by the vast majority for disregarding the will of the people.
06:02And Colombia will hold its presidential elections in four months, and according to the latest polls, the left-wing candidate Ivan Cepeda is in the lead, followed by the far-right candidate.
06:12Let's take a look at the details with our colleague, Hernando Barr.
06:15In May, Colombians will go to the polls to elect their next president.
06:24The most recent poll published by private media shows a leading voting intentions for Senator Ivan Cepeda, the left-wing candidate, with 38 percent, followed by the right-wing candidate, Abelardo de Lespriella, with 22 percent.
06:38A large percentage of the vote is around Ivan Cepeda, who is leading in the polls and has the best chance in almost all second-round scenarios,
06:49versus a poll of an extreme-right outsider, the type of candidate that has been promoted from the sector, let's call it this new populist right in Latin America,
07:00which is very quick to respond, not very favourable to the rule of law and compliance with certain rules, especially the control of powers, and are looking to recreate the same figure.
07:13All of the candidates resemble Bukele, all of the candidates resemble Millet.
07:17If they are not tigers, they are lions or any other large cat that is unoccupied at the time to create the candidate image.
07:23The voting projection that currently favours the left-wing candidate and the governing party, the Historical Pact Response, according to analysts,
07:34to the fact that a large part of Colombian society continues to support a policy of consolidation and deepening of social transformations,
07:41neglected by previous right-wing governments.
07:44The truth is that the country is polarized.
07:49Ivan Cepeda's extremely high approval ratings demonstrate the success of the government of change
07:55and that the majority of Colombians continue to support the proposal for profound change in Colombia.
08:01And the rise of Abelardo de la Espriera as the candidate of the far right also reveals that there is a sector of society
08:07that is deeply contradictory to these changes, which sits in the figure of Álvaro Uribe and, in this case, Abelardo Somo,
08:14who can express their fears and doubts about in the face of the changes that are taking place.
08:19Warnings on the subject once again focus on the origin of the service themselves,
08:26as the strategy of using this type of tool to serve the ideological agendas of the ruling classes,
08:33which may be putting pressure on the electorate in this context, is not new.
08:43Calling companies know that they are instruments for shaping ideology and opinion
08:48and in that sense they must also follow an agenda.
08:51The question to ask is how it suits the far right for Ivan Cepeda to appear with such a large lead in the polls.
08:59In other words, these polls should be read not only as something informative,
09:04but also as a reflection of the political intentions of the sectors that dominate these polling companies
09:11and that are interested in implementing a certain framework of interpretation.
09:17This is the outlook for the upcoming presidential elections in Colombia,
09:21with the first round of schedule for Sunday, May 31st of this year.
09:25Viva Ivan Cepeda!
09:27Hernanda, Viva Tobarga, Itán Telesur, Bogotá, Colombia.

10:08Wildfires continue burning through the center-south region of Chile,
10:11with 20 people dead and over 7,000 affected,
10:14leaving at least 35,000 hectares of forest burned in the provinces of Pío Pío and Núble.
10:19Most of the victims are concentrated in the Pío Pío region, particularly in Penco and Lurquén,
10:24where the destruction of homes and businesses has left a profound social impact.
10:28According to the Secretary of State, there are 573 people sheltered in 19 refuges so far.
10:34In this context, emergency services are still combating 31 active fires,
10:39but stated that the mobilization of resources is complicated by the simultaneity of outbreaks in several regions.
10:46Rescue teams continue working in extreme conditions to protect communities that remain under threat.
10:51In the United States, due to recent rain, snow and cold temperatures,
11:05drivers in Durham, North Carolina and the surrounding area experienced slick roads.
11:10Footage film on Sunday showed crashed vehicles in Durham and Wake counties,
11:16as well as cars sliding on slippery roads.
11:19Temperatures were forecast to plummet to 6 degrees Celsius across central North Carolina and Sandhills.
11:24Despite the unseasonably cold air, North Carolinians won't experience record-breaking temperatures,
11:30with the coldest record highs in the mid-20s and lows in the single digits.
11:51In this context, on Monday, more than a hundred vehicles crashed into each other
11:54or slid off the interstate in Michigan as a snowstorm fueled by Great Lakes blanketed the state.
12:00A massive pileup on Interstate 196 just southwest of Grand Rapids prompted the Michigan State Police
12:06to close both directions on Monday morning.
12:09Officials were working to remove all the vehicles, including more than 36 semi-trailers.
12:15According to the State Police, there were numerous injuries, but no death had been reported.
12:19The crash is the latest impact of the major winter storm.
12:22The National Weather Service warned of extremely cold temperatures and winter storms
12:26across northern Minnesota and southern Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.
12:43China has urged the U.S. to stop using the narrative of a China threat as a pretext
12:49to justify its actions over Greenland, insisting that international law based on the UN Charter must be upheld.
12:56Our correspondent in Beijing, Bruno Falsi, has the details.
13:00Greetings, comrades!
13:01I am in Beijing now to inform you this time that China condemns what it considers United States interference in other countries,
13:12promoting the law of the jungle and disrespecting the United Nations Charters.
13:19following the invasion and bombing of Venezuela and the kidnapping of the President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
13:28Washington is now seeking to seize Greenland under the pretext of containing a supposed Chinese threat.
13:36Beijing maintained that these actions violate international law, infringe upon each nation's freedom to choose with whom they maintain relations
13:47and threatened the stability of the Arctic, a strategic region for the international community.
13:54Let's look now to the words of the speaker of the Chinese government.
14:01China has stated its position on Greenland on multiple occasions.
14:05The international law, underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter,
14:09is the foundation of the current international order and must be respected.
14:13We urge the United States to stop using the so-called China threat as a pretext to seek selfish benefits.
14:19Along the same lines, the spokesperson Mao Ning affirmed that the rights of all countries to act in the Arctic must be respected
14:28and emphasized that the region concerns the international community and the China activities there aim for peace, stability and sustainable development.
14:41She also warned that the United States should not use other countries as a pretext for its own selfish interests,
14:51reaffirming the call for multilateralism and respect for the United Nations Charter.
14:57From here, from Beijing, the capital of China, we go back with you in the studios in La Habana, Cuba.
15:04On Monday, the 2026 annual meeting of the World Economic Forum began in Davos, Switzerland,

15:16The five-day event has drawn nearly 3,000 leaders and experts worldwide to discuss present global challenges.
15:22Among the issues addressed were the rising risks and downward pressure on the global economy,
15:27analyzed in a series of publications released by the World Economic Forum in the lead-up to the meeting.
15:32According to leading economies, factors such as shifting asset valuations,
15:37rising debt, geoeconomic realignment and the rapid deployment of artificial intelligence
15:42are expected to continue impacting the world economy.

16:03In the town of Adamus, in the province of Cordoba, south of Spain,
16:07occurred one of the most serious train accidents in recent years on January 18th.
16:08Authorities have confirmed that 40 people have died, in addition to dozens missing and more than 150 injured.
16:12with at least 20 in serious condition.
16:13A Telestore team was in the area to report on how this
16:15was in the area.
16:16In the province of Cordoba, south of Spain, occurred one of the most serious train accidents in recent years on January 18th.
16:19Authorities have confirmed that 40 people have died, in addition to dozens missing and more than 150 injured, with at least 20 in serious condition.
16:25A Telestore team was in the area to report on how these first 24 hours marked by grief and solidarity have been experienced.
16:32Lucia Muñoz provides us with more information from Andalusia.
16:35In Adamus, no one will forget this day.
16:37Paqui was at home when a phone call broke the call.
16:40A train had derailed on the tracks that run along the town.
16:41Within minutes, neighbours were running towards a scene of chaos, smoke and silence broken by screams.
16:53In Adamus, no one will forget this day.
16:55Paqui was at home when a phone call broke the call.
16:58A train had derailed on the tracks that run along the town.
17:01Within minutes, neighbours were running towards a scene of chaos, smoke and silence broken by screams.
17:06Another girl who went to the town, because the train started to shake and she went on one of the tables until the train stopped and she saw people flying around the carriage.
17:17Like another guy who helped, who didn't know what he thought he had heard, his mother said, but didn't know where she was.
17:28The town of Adamus sprung into action from the very first moment. Neighbors brought food, warm clothing and heaters for those affected.
17:37They were even the first to attend to the injured, like Gonzalo, who brought lights, used his quad bike and managed to transport up to eight people from the accident site to the town.
17:47Running with a civil car at the same pace and we went there and you find yourself there.
17:54Yes, you find yourself. Running, finding things when we got there, with the bar of breaking the fence so the fire brigades could get in and we could access it.
18:08To date, the Ministry of Transport has acknowledged that there is no definite hypothesis about what happened and that the Andalusia-Madrid line will remain closed until February 2nd.
18:37The President of the government, Pedro Sánchez, appeared at a press conference where he declared three days of mourning and said the investigation will be completed.
18:46Let's find the truth. Let's discover the answer. And when we discover the answer to the origin of the cause of this absolute tragedy, with absolute transparency,
18:59and absolute clarity, let's learn about public opinion among citizens, citizens through the media.
19:11The rescue and medical attention efforts continue. While an investigation commission has been set up to clarify the facts,
19:17the Civil Guard states that a possible fault in the track is being analyzed but no definite conclusions have been reached at this time.
19:23Lucia Muñoz Lucena and Francie González, Telesur.
19:27Andalusia.
19:29In the West Bank, the Israeli military launched a large-scale operation in Hebron,
19:45paralysed in the city's southern districts with the deployment of hundreds of soldiers and heavy machinery.
20:02On Monday, the Israeli army and the internal security service Shin Bet confirmed the offensive,
20:08saying that its aim is to disrupt alleged terrorist infrastructure and confiscate weapons in the Jabal Johar area.
20:14The result, the southern Hebron region has been under curfew since dawn.
20:17Further, power-occupation forces are carrying out an intensive deployment, including bulldozers and tracked armored vehicles.
20:34And Israel began bulldozing buildings inside the headquarters of the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees
20:39in the occupied East Jerusalem as the occupation clamps down heavily on humanitarian groups
20:44that provide desperately needed aid to Palestinians in Gaza.
20:47UNWA said in a statement that Israeli forces had confiscated staff devices
20:52and forced them out of their headquarters in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood.
20:56UNWA's chief Philip Lazzarini said the attack came in the wake of other steps taken by Israeli authorities
21:02to erase the Palestinian refugee identity.
21:05Lazzarini warned that what happens today to UNWA will happen tomorrow to any other international organization
21:10or diplomatic mission anywhere in the world.
21:13Now, this is a new level of open and deliberate defiance of international law,
21:24including of the privileges and immunities of the United Nations by the State of Israel.
21:28Again, I'm paraphrasing from Mr. Lazzarini's statement, which you put out short while ago.
21:35This demolition constitutes an unprecedented attack against a United Nations agency and its premises.
21:44And it comes in the wake of other steps taken by Israeli authorities to erase the Palestinian refugee identity.
21:53You might recall that on January 12th, Israeli forces stormed into an UNRWA health center in East Jerusalem
22:00Jerusalem and ordered it to close.
22:03Now, together, these actions, with previous arson attacks and a large-scale disinformation campaign,
22:09fly in the face of the ruling in October by International Court of Justice,
22:15which restated that Israel is obliged under international law to facilitate UNRWA's operations, not hinder or prevent them.
22:25And tensions rise in Northeast Syria as Kurdish forces and the army of the de facto government
22:30accuse each other of breaking the recent ceasefire agreement after new fighting breaks out.
22:34Violent clashes between the self-proclaimed Syrian Democratic Forces and the army of the country's de facto government,
22:39controlled by the terrorist group HDS, have left at least three soldiers dead and several wounded in the province of Al-Raqqa.
22:46Both sides accused each other of violating the ceasefire agreement reached on Sunday,
22:51which sought to integrate Kurdish militias into the Syrian state.
22:54The fighting is taking place near the Al-Aqtani prison, which houses combatants from the Islamic State terrorist group,
23:00threatening to destabilize security throughout the region.
23:03An armed group stormed a prison in Syria that houses thousands of Islamic State terrorist group fighters.
23:17The Kurdish forces guarding it lost control of the premises.
23:20The self-proclaimed Syrian Democratic Forces lost control of the Al-Shadaghi prison in the Northeast of the country
23:26after an assault by unidentified armed groups.
23:29The complex housed thousands of fighters from the terrorist group Daesh, causing a maximum security alert in the region.
23:34Kurdish militias reported that a nearby international coalition base did not intervene despite requests for help.
23:41For this part, the de facto Syrian government warned Kurdish forces not to exploit the situation for political gain.
23:47And Somalia confirmed the signing of a trilateral security agreement with Saudi Arabia and Egypt aimed at shielding stability in the Red Sea.
24:02The agreement seeks to strengthen strategic cooperation and defense ties to protect this vital international trade route,
24:08allowing the free nations to play a more robust joint role in safeguarding regional security in the face of growing tensions.
24:14Somali president Hassan Sheikh Mohammed is expected to travel to Saudi Arabia in the coming days to formalize the final document.
24:21The initiative strengthens Somalia's maritime sovereignty and consolidates a new axis of influence in the Horn of Africa.
