00:00you know i'm a disease sports nfl draft analyst he joins us every single tuesday here at 320
00:06also the host of the ruffino and joe show on the make it right call car right hotline
00:10the great joe de leon back with the show what's up buddy welcome to the thunderdome
00:16yeah i appreciate the uh the nice compliment you guys gave me that i have thoughts and opinions
00:21it makes me uh it makes me feel uh you know really excited to dive in with you guys today
00:31it's been a wild day i feel like i'm still missing half of the signings that have happened
00:35there's been there's been so much and not to mention the fact that you've got conflicting
00:39reports half the time with these contracts and whatnot yeah that's uh that's also annoying us
00:44we got bit by a jordan schultz report and then apparently uh shefter corrected him and then i
00:50think shefter corrected himself as well and so we're just it's a little banana lands for us now
00:55from the brown side of things uh you did sign zion johnson yesterday they traded for uh titus
01:01howard and they signed quincy williams to replace devon bush who went to chicago those three moves
01:06alone how do we feel about the browns and free agency so far yeah i think that the general approach
01:12of just trying to take some shots with improving the offensive line like that to me was the strongest
01:18way that you could have started off for agency i think that zion johnson grabbing him now with
01:25the momentum he started to show last season and some of the improvements that he had like i think that
01:30adding him into the mix it mitigates the need to spend a ton of draft capital on multiple offensive
01:39linemen and i think that now as we look ahead to the draft it still really feels like that that
01:44first
01:45pick to the browns have should go to it should go towards taking an alignment maybe it still ends up
01:50being monroe freeling but it's a step in the right direction when the browns have this entire
01:56reconstruction this renovation ahead of them it is the first foundation laying approach that is at
02:03least going to get them back up to a solid consistent level instead of hoping that you can get something
02:09out of the scraps that you had from last season uh do you think the browns are waiting to address
02:13wide receiver at the draft and maybe this is what they're doing at six instead or do you like the
02:18idea that they've done nothing so far with with uh wide receiver at this point uh is is kind of
02:23leaning me towards that at six well i think that generally there's a lot of teams this year that had
02:30needed receiver and the options they're receiving this year just weren't very good you're seeing all
02:35these gigantic contracts going towards mid-level to like wide receiver threes wide receiver fours
02:42like the contract for alec pierce was obviously gigantic and that was the most expensive one of
02:48free agency but like is it really worth i'm not speaking directly to pierce but is it really worth
02:53spending all that money on a wide receiver that has a short track record of proven success like
02:59another example one of the guys that was in the mix this year was wandel robinson he had one really
03:04good year with giants this past year finally got over a thousand yards but other than that he hadn't
03:09really done a whole lot i think that if you're going to be taking shots on upside it'd be much
03:13better to do it with a cheaper option so it feels like the browns along with a lot of teams
03:17are just
03:18hoping that this year's draft class can help improve their receiver room and thankfully for them this
03:23year's receiver class is really good i just think that going with a cheaper route for a wide receiver
03:28is probably the better the better approach instead of putting yourself in the mix for one of these
03:33extremely expensive guys that do not have much of a track record of long-term dominance all right so
03:40i i know uh shefter just said he's actually not available a day after people said he was available
03:47but uh should the browns rather trade for brian thomas jr let's say pick 39 or the best available
03:56wide receiver 24 that's a tough question the one thing though that with that is i think i wonder
04:02if btj would even be available for something that that cheap if it was for pick 39 i would i
04:11would
04:11wonder if the jaguars would have a desire to try and get more more out of that but taking the
04:16best
04:17available wide receiver at pick 24 could theoretically get you equal production i'd rather keep the pick i'd
04:24rather keep the draft capital if you're a team if you're the browns and you have all the needs that
04:29you have across the board retaining as much draft capital as possible is probably for the best
04:33especially in the draft class where after the first three rounds it's going to fall off of a
04:39cliff cliff in terms of the quality of prospects that you're going to be able to get that early
04:42draft capital is something that is going to be worth it's going to be a lot smarter for you to
04:48keep
04:48that and try and grab as many of the top names as possible so i'd be much more enticed to
04:52pick a
04:53wide receiver at the top of the or at the back end of the first 49ers want a ransom for
04:58mac jones uh
04:59what what should the price be in your opinion and should the browns be in on it i mean if
05:04anything
05:04more than a a day three pick i feel like feels feels expensive for mac jones i i don't know
05:11i feel
05:11like the the asking price for him gets driven up off of the fact that darnold turned into what he
05:16was
05:17in the string of good games from mac jones is like is that enough to to buy back in on
05:24him that we've
05:25got more awful performances for mac jones than we do evidence that he can be a starting nfl quarterback
05:31so i i wouldn't move i wouldn't go make a move for him for anything more than a day three
05:36pick because
05:37if he ends up not being very good you you at least spend a day three pick on a really
05:42good veteran
05:42backup quarterback that could stick around for some time but if you end up wasting a day two pick
05:48or more than that on a guy who ends up stinking like that that just would be a complete waste
05:54of
05:54capital to to make a move like that uh looking to the the rest of the afc north here max
06:00crosby
06:01to uh baltimore for two firsts there how does max crosby change the math in the afc at large
06:08yeah i mean the now the ravens defensively i just i see them getting back on track towards
06:16not just consistency but dominance last year they were obviously derailed by injuries but they never
06:21really had that premier elite pass rusher that we were used to seeing in baltimore i think that
06:28understanding that their identity has always been through winning on defense winning through their
06:33defensive line with big name guys like crosby minter taking the job and the connection of
06:39minter now to crosby and being able to work with him there's no reason why this ravens team can't
06:45get right back to winning the division i feel like before free agency before any of these moves it was
06:51a
06:51little bit open-ended on hey could the bangles make some moves and become the best team in the division
06:56could the steelers get back on track but right now it feels like the ravens are seizing the moment
07:01seizing the opportunity while some of these other teams in the division are i mean we know the
07:05browns were going to be in a rebuild mode but like i i still don't really know understand what the
07:10steelers are trying to do i feel like the bangles are trying to duct tape their way towards fixing
07:15their defense it really seems pretty clear that the ravens are doing everything possible to continue to
07:21maximize this short window that they have for lamar jackson until he inevitably starts to slow down
07:26the steelers i find interesting you say you don't really know what they're they're doing i look at it like
07:30if they're bringing aaron rogers back he just doesn't he doesn't do rookie one year second year
07:35wide receivers as is you bring in pitman all of a sudden you got pitman you got dk metcalf and
07:40you
07:40have friar muth who all of a sudden is a little bit older at least seems like he's a little
07:43bit older
07:44there's experience now with those guys is the point and it feels like they're allocating their their
07:49resources more to the offensive side of the ball than what they did previously under tomlin which is
07:53just so heavy defense my only problem with that is i mean just to be quite frank i don't think
07:59jackal pitman's very good i just i feel like he's he's really tapered off and he's been kind of weak
08:04so to bring him in understandably it was a cheap trade but i believe they extended him and they
08:09gave him an extension off of the when they brought him in to commit to him you got two like
08:15bigger
08:16bodied receivers with pitman and dk metcalf i i kind of wonder where they're going to find
08:21some speed if they're going to need to prioritize that in the draft they're going to need to make sure
08:27with their first or second pick this year that they address that very very early otherwise they're
08:32going to have to turn to you know another low level speed receiver slot receiver whatever it
08:37might be because i i feel a little bit hunky with the way that they're building a wide receiver room
08:43but i just keep coming away with bringing back aaron rogers does that really move the needle for us
08:48like it feels like it's their only option and it feels to a degree i don't even want to call
08:54it
08:54desperate i just don't think it really gets them anywhere i felt like they were extremely stagnated
08:59last season because rogers rogers can't do anything that made rogers good which was being
09:03mobile and being able to throw the run and improvise and make these crazy plays like he
09:07he's so like locked in in statuesque that he can barely move and he can barely throw the ball as
09:14hard
09:14as he used to be able to i i get that tibet at least helps you improve things but i
09:20don't have much
09:20faith that rogers is going to be better next year if anything i feel like he's probably going to be
09:23worse there's been a pretty rapid decline joe uh it does seem like a lot of people are just
09:29penciling kyler murray into minnesota uh and just that's just done and we're kind of gonna move on
09:35it does sound like kyler wants a guarantee about starting in minnesota if he doesn't get it should
09:42kyler prefer uh maybe fighting for a job with jj mccarthy in minnesota or made to be a wide open
09:49situation like in cleveland i really actually do think and when like talking about looking at best
09:56destinations for kyler i really did think that the browns was an intriguing destination for him
10:02because of it is not a one-to-one player archetype comparison lamar jackson to kyler murray but
10:10they're both really good athletes they're both very rare athletes for the quarterback position
10:14you're not going to use kyler the same way knowing that todd munkin had the success that he did
10:19coaching lamar jackson but it makes me feel really really kind of excited about the potential to connect
10:27the two and to have murray be coached by munkin so i feel like that would be his best spot
10:33because as
10:34we're talking about here remaining seats at the for him to take over pittsburgh it seems like they're
10:40going with rogers why would he go in there if they're still considering rogers and to your point
10:45why would kyler want to compete with jj mccarthy because if he can't start over jj mccarthy and jj
10:51mccarthy looks as bad as he did last year again it's just going to continue to drive down kyler's
10:58stock it would just be a waste of a year to a degree joe great stuff as always buddy and
11:04i'll say
11:04it one more time for the cheap seats there you're better than rapaport and you're better than
11:08shefter and you don't look like peewee herman which again is a negative for me because i just
11:14if you're gonna look like peewee herman you might as well be peewee herman i say do you get a
11:17comp
11:18ever in life joe does anyone ever tell you i look like anybody uh you guys are gonna i'm gonna
11:23come
11:23off like a total ass for saying this but i get a lot of people tell me i look like
11:27tom holland i get
11:28that a lot surprisingly why does everybody else get good comps and i get will sasso well
11:39my one comp was connor frank camp that's not a good comp you don't want that comp
11:43and most of the time people stick with the good one and then they just they just say that over
11:46and
11:47over again and that's all that ever ends up being so when i see your picture joe i do kind
11:50of think
11:50of the bad german guy from raiders of the lost ark you're the guy with the glasses and his face
11:55melts off but i say that i mean that's not a good comp i can't be getting that
11:59not when the face melts off yeah before that yeah before that when he's alive and and chasing the
12:07you know the the the arc of the whatever and whatnot right i i i'm not gonna accept that one
12:14but i understand where you're coming from that's fair that's your sasso we get it he just runs with
12:18tom holland that's all that is i'll take tom holland by the way i get mark walberg all the
12:21time just just so we're clear but it's fat mark walberg i swear i'm not making that up i'm not
12:27making it up it'd be a weird thing if you did so we trust you on this one joe be
12:32good buddy
12:32appreciate you all right thanks guys
