00:30che si chiede il Considio, che suddenly Gavroche poppetta in il suo cuore.
00:34Mi chiede Michel e mi chiede,
00:36«What do you think? Le Miserable, for our next music call?»
00:39E mi chiede, «We start work tomorrow morning».
00:42E mi chiede il mio lavoro,
00:44il mio album che Alaino e Claude Michel recorded in Francia,
00:48e io ero molto felice.
00:50Cameron mi chiede, «You don't realise what you have written.
00:53This may speak to the world».
00:56E lo che volevo fare, è realizzare in un modo
00:59che mi chiede a fare un nuovo musical.
01:00E io volevo essere parte di questo processo.
01:04Il mi chiede un giorno, «January 1985».
01:07E mi chiede, «Come and see me today,
01:10lunch at the Ivy».
01:12E mi chiede, «This is big business».
01:14E mi chiede, «Would you be interested
01:16in writing the lyrics for Le Miserable?»
01:20E mi chiede, «I went to work on March the 1st, 1985».
01:24E mi chiede, «We went into rehearsal,
01:26I think, in August that year».
01:27E mi chiede, «And the first preview we opened,
01:29the show ran just under four hours».
01:31The following morning, the critics were terrible.
01:36Some of them were really nasty.
01:39And the rest was horrendous.
01:42So I think, «Oh, I'll just ring up the box office
01:45just to find out the worst,
01:46so I at least can be honest with everybody».
01:48It took me about half an hour to get through.
01:50And I said, «Well, what's happening?»
01:51He said, «We've never had so many calls».
01:53But the box office manager said there was a line stretching
01:56right around the block for about 100 yards.
01:59It was like a torrent that happened that day.
02:02And within a few days, that run was sold out.
02:14After the 25th anniversary, which I did,
02:16the great concert of the O2,
02:18I decided to celebrate 25 years of Les Miserables
02:21with a brand new production.
02:23And it's doing extraordinary business.
02:25I can confidently say it's likely to be there
02:27for at least another decade.
02:30The first time that I thought about putting Les Mis on the screen
02:33was actually 25 years ago,
02:36shortly after the Broadway opening.
02:38So it really stayed dormant
02:41until about three or four years ago.
02:44I was working with the writer William Nicholson
02:46on another project and he said,
02:48«Oh, I've just been asked to adapt the musical Les Mis».
02:50And a light bulb went off in my head.
02:53I know Cameron Macintosh and working title and Universal waited.
02:58for the right time, the right filmmaker to come along.
03:02What have I done, sweet Jesus, what have I done?
03:05Become a thief in the night, become a dog on the run.
03:08From the very, very beginning,
03:09what excited me about doing Les Miserables was doing it live.
03:13Turn your heart into stars.
03:15There's something about what an actor does live on the day
03:17that whether you pre-record it or post-record it,
03:19it's never quite the same.
03:21This is all I have lived for.
03:24This is all I am now.
03:29Tom realized that when an actor is singing live,
03:32they're actually emoting as they would on stage.
03:36I dreamed a dream in time gone by.
03:40And, indeed, that for me was always the key.
03:44The hope was high.
03:45What was that?
03:48Sometimes I feel like that night at Oliver,
03:50watching this musical, which I love, I mean,
03:53makes me feel like you never know.
03:55Did I receive a signal from someone?
03:57I don't really believe in any of that.
03:59One day more, another day, another destiny.
04:04We were just rehearsing the death of Jean Valjean
04:06with you, with Anna Taoué.
04:08I said, but, my God, I'm a simple kid
04:11coming from Hungarian immigration,
04:14born in the west of France.
04:16What I'm doing here with all those stars.
04:19One day more, one day more to revolution.
04:23The family of Les Miserables are its greatest strength.
04:27And I think I've come to realize their strength
04:30even more through Tom Hooper's eyes.
04:33And the way that he has actually led us all
04:36to reinvent this musical for the movies
04:39rather than try and put the stage show on the movie.
04:53All right.
