00:00Ooh, I've been beefing all day today.
00:03All day.
00:05Hi, I'm Charles Melton,
00:06and I am doing the New Yorker mini interview.
00:13The New Yorker famously loves facts.
00:17Can you tell us a little known fact about yourself?
00:23I haven't been able to sleep
00:25because I watch anime
00:29till four o'clock in the morning
00:33almost every other day.
00:37You said you're a fan of anime.
00:42These are all like setting up the next, wow.
00:45What are your top three shows?
00:47Dragon Ball Z, Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen.
00:53Dragon Ball Z, I mean, that's just a classic.
00:56That's my childhood.
00:58Demon Slayer, I mean, Tangiro.
01:00Man, he finds strength in the love
01:03that he has for his sister and his friends,
01:05and he's one of the most honorable characters I've seen.
01:11Itadori in Jujutsu Kaisen, Itadori.
01:14Man, I just love him.
01:18Itadori in Jujutsu Kaisen, Itadori in Jujutsu Kaisen.
01:46And he ends up becoming a knight.
01:47And there's like rock music in the film.
01:49It's amazing.
01:50It just reminds me of me and my dad
01:52because we'd always look up at the stars
01:53and, you know, like dream and stuff like that.
01:55And then The Matrix because the constructs
01:59of our reality or realities.
02:05Blue pill or the red pill, I don't know.
02:08Do you mix them?
02:10I don't know.
02:11I'll pick these up.
02:14Stay calm, don't get nervous.
02:16Okay.
02:17What is the best piece of career advice
02:19you've ever received?
02:22Listen.
02:26Did I make that up?
02:27Maybe.
02:29Who is a director you would love to work with?
02:33I'd love to work with Greg Guidor again
02:36because I worked with him on Saturn Return in Chicago
02:39with my best friend, Will Poulter was amazing.
02:42One of my best friends.
02:43And it was just one of my greatest experiences.
02:48So, yeah, Greg Guidor.
02:50That's who I want to work with next and again
02:55and over and over.
02:57Who is your favorite fictional villain?
03:02Heath Ledger's The Joker.
03:04What Heath Ledger, you know, in his work,
03:07in his performance, it's just transcendent.
03:09There's just no words for the nuance
03:11in everything you're experiencing
03:12and you're scared but entertained.
03:15All these things happening at the same time.
03:18A role that I've always wanted to play.
03:21I don't really have an idea,
03:22but when I think about some of my favorite films,
03:26like Parasite, for example,
03:29it kind of crosses multiple genres and tonalities.
03:34You know, you're, I mean, if you've seen that film,
03:38I think it's the best film.
03:40One of the best films I've ever made.
03:42Maybe the best.
03:43Or when you think of memories of murder, right?
03:46Like it's this crime thriller
03:49and there's so much that's happening,
03:51but you find yourself laughing.
03:52I try not to really pigeonhole myself
03:56in this idea of a genre
03:58because I'm starting to witness a lot of great work out there
04:04that's kind of threading through multiple genres,
04:10multiple truths of some sort of rich subject.
04:16Okay, what's something that has surprised you about fatherhood?
04:22I'd say everything, everything has surprised me.
04:31Time means, time means something now.
04:36What advice would you give to someone
04:38who is beefing with another person?
04:40Just talk to them, talk to them.
04:43I'm beefing with the person I see in the mirror.
04:45Every day.
04:48God, there's so much beef in the world.
04:50This is very unserious beef,
04:53but one of my closest friends,
04:57I sent them a text.
04:58Usually they respond immediately almost.
05:01I checked to see if the text went through
05:03because I was having some Wi-Fi issues
05:06or signal issues or whatever.
05:09And they added the do not disturb.
05:12And I was like, what?
05:13What? So did you see my text?
05:16And then put on do not disturb
05:17because when that text went through,
05:19it did not say do not disturb.
05:20So what's going on right now?
05:21That's petty.
05:27Petty.
05:27And then I'm like, why does this upset me?
05:30Then I start beefing with myself.
05:32I'm like, oh, this is a me thing.
05:35I'm tired of the beef every single day.
