For The New Yorker’s Starter Pack Series, the musician Audrey Hobert shares the films, books, and music that have inspired her. The pop singer and songwriter discusses the Carole King song she wishes she wrote, Sylvia Plath’s “The Bell Jar,” and the five songs she listens to before she goes onstage—which include a track by Charli XCX. Audrey Hobert will be supporting Charli XCX on her "Music, Fashion, Film" tour in February.

00:00Throw on that song right now and if you are in a time crunch, just please throw on the last
00:0530 seconds and let the beat take you over. It's so nasty.
00:09Hey, I'm Audrey Hobart and this is my starter pack of films, books, and music.
00:14A movie that I watched recently, it's not my favorite Pixar, but I did just watch it and was sort
00:19of confronted by the main character was Cars, Lightning McQueen.
00:24He lives a fast and furious life and winds up in a little town called Radiator Springs and there he
00:32kind of learns the importance of friendship and being down to earth.
00:35Just picture me in first class with a glass of champagne watching that coming off a world tour.
00:39I don't want to be Lightning. I want to be more like Tow Mater or even Flo.
00:44The inciting incident is that he forces his tour bus driver to drive through the night even though he's very
00:50tired.
00:50Everything went wrong because he was being mean to his team and so yeah, I just am always worried that
00:56I'm not being a good enough person to those around me.
00:59Lightning is sort of the poster child for something like that and I don't want to be like Lightning.
01:03Touring is awesome. I really love to perform so that's great because it's always a reminder of the parts about
01:09it that feel kind of tiring.
01:11It always feels worth it because I get to cap off the day with a great performance.
01:14I have a playlist that I made that plays five songs before I take the stage out in the crowd
01:18and it's like meant to ramp personally me up.
01:22Like they're the songs that I probably need to hear before I go on stage.
01:26It starts with Into the Groove by Madonna and then it goes into my Bloody Valentine song and then it
01:31goes into Freak by Feeble Little Horse and then it goes into Bennington by John Mouse and then it's Von
01:39Dutch, Charlie XCX.
01:49I am excited to open for Charlie XCX. I would say that. I was gagged. I am a huge fan
01:54of her new album. It's been my album of the year for sure. Very inspiring.
01:58The first time I listened to it I was in Columbus, Ohio walking in a park and it made me
02:02feel like I wanted to write which is I think the highest compliment I could give.
02:05I have been working a lot so weirdly when it's time for me to relax I feel that I'm able
02:10to sink into that even more than I was before.
02:14I was incredibly busy because every time I relax I feel that I've earned it whereas before every time I
02:19was relaxing I felt like I haven't done anything with my life yet so how could I possibly be relaxing.
02:25Jack Harlow kind of has a line about that and what's popping.
02:32How do I make time for reading while on tour? I don't. I haven't read much but now I'm reading
02:36Bad Blood, that Elizabeth Holmes, I don't know if it's a biography, expose.
02:41My manager gave it to me and I'm just sort of prepping for the Nathan Fielder movie that's coming out.
02:46He inspires me just by breathing. Yeah, I think he's brilliant.
02:59The Bell Jar is one of my favorite books. I was turned on to The Bell Jar in middle school
03:04by my friend Clementine.
03:05She always had very interesting taste like she loved Belle and Sebastian and Lady Gaga and I knew that was
03:12like the coolest combo and I didn't read it I think until three years ago.
03:16I remember I finished it in three days and it was very overcast and I was really depressed but I
03:22was also like this is definitely one of the best books ever and I just honestly think anyone would like
03:26it.
03:26Another book I'd like to recommend is At Home in the World by Joyce Maynard.
03:30I'm about two pages in but I think I'm gonna like it.
03:33She writes about her daughter whose name is Audrey so it really grabbed me.
03:36I'm like not the right person to ask about music right now.
03:39I'm having this problem where I don't feel the urge to listen to music and there was a time in
03:43my life where I couldn't live without hearing like a Zed song over and over all day and it really
03:50made me want to live and not that I don't want to live now but I just for some reason
03:53have lost that.
03:54I think ever since I started writing my own music that craving is less about listening to a song that
04:00I love and more about like wanting to make my own.
04:02Album wise voice notes Charlie Puth I mean need I say more I'm not even kidding I met him I
04:10think it was like 2021 or 2022 before I was anybody I was nobody and I saw him at a
04:15party and I went up to him and I just told him that album soundtracked my sophomore year of college.
04:20I think it's just stellar I think Charlie Puth is a melodic genius and I think everybody knows that now
04:27I don't know it felt like a hot take back in 2018 I think when that album came out.
04:31I've been writing for Charlie Puth since then I love the way I am I love done for me I
04:37think attention is on that album so yeah there's that I just love him.
04:51I don't know if I need to collaborate with Charlie Puth but that's not because I don't want to I
04:57just seem stressful for me I think I'd be really stressed out in a room with him.
05:00Maybe in a few years when I feel more established I will feel not worthy but like it wouldn't be
05:06just such a existentially stressful experience to be in a studio with him and I kind of feel that way
05:10about all my heroes.
05:12Tapestry by Carole King is an album that was playing in my house a lot when I was a child.
05:16My mom loves that album and I myself recently got a record player so I got Tapestry and I always
05:24put it on when I'm doing chores and it makes me really smile and I just sing along and I
05:30think it's there's not a bad song on that album and my favorite is Beautiful.
05:33People will sometimes ask like what's the song you wish you wrote and I for some reason never say that
05:38song but that is the song I wish I wrote.
05:51It was awesome to work with my best friend and what inspired me to make my own music was I
05:57wanted to just keep writing songs and hadn't tried it by myself yet so then I tried it and then
06:03I loved it.
06:03Piece of me came on shuffle when I was flying here and I just was like this beat so nasty
06:10I want to dance.
06:11My whole touring crew all year they listened to Jeep by Kim Petras every single night and I love Jeep
06:17but I'm in the corner listening to Detour.
06:20That's another nasty beat kind of a la Piece of Me.
06:22I think that beat is so nasty I love the melody I love Kim.
06:25On the plane here I was watching Beyonce's Coachella set which I've never seen all the way through and obviously
06:31she starts it with Crazy in Love and I just was like it's timeless that song has been around since
06:35I was a kid.
06:36I always knew it was banging and just still all these years later she's just the ultimate she's the ultimate
06:41she's the she's the one.
06:42There were two songs that I used to fall asleep to in high school when I was stressed out about
06:47my grades.
06:47One of them was Irreplaceable by Beyonce and the other one was Pretty Girl Rock by Carrie Hilson.
06:53I don't think it was that they were calming.
06:55I think it was that the again beat was so nasty and melodies were so good that it would distract
07:00me and I would just make up dances in my head until I fall asleep.
07:04One right now I forget when it came out but it feels like it's like a under the radar kind
07:07of track for two huge artists like The Weeknd and Post Malone.
07:11Also they came together like let's talk about it.
07:12That song is capital E, ear, capital C, candy.
07:18I can run it back.
07:19It never gets old and the last 30 seconds of it I actually like lose myself, convulse, just throw on
07:26that song right now and if you are in a time crunch just please throw on the last 30 seconds
07:31and let the beat take you over.
07:33It's so nasty.
07:43It's like one of my missions of every single day to try and find something new that inspires me.
07:48I've been actually thinking about that a lot as a 27 year old.
07:52I'm like this is basically still the beginning of my life and I'm so obsessed with the things that I've
07:57found so far and however will I find more but I know that I will.
08:02I don't scroll too much sometimes I find it's just more interesting to stare at the wall.
08:05Something I've always felt is that every person on the planet has an intuition and has opinions and has a
08:13voice and however you can access that in your regular life but then also if you're creating art.
08:20I think that's just your best bet at success is no one can be you you are the only you
08:26and you should just create from that place because nobody else can do it.
