The Untold Origin Story of Mozilla and Its Founders Revealed!
Transcript
00:00Hey guys, welcome to my channel. Today's video is going to be about the story of Mozilla.
00:06If you use Firefox, you probably know that it's made by Mozilla. But do you know who founded
00:11Mozilla? Do you know how Mozilla started out? And more importantly, how does Mozilla make money?
00:17It's me and you're watching this channel. All right, so before we get into how Mozilla makes
00:22money, I think it's important to know a little bit about its history. Now, like most of these
00:27stories, this one starts in the 90s with two guys named Jamie Zawinski and Blake Ross.
00:32These two were Netscape engineers, but Netscape was dying. You see, Internet Explorer was eating
00:38Netscape's lunch back then. And if you didn't know, Netscape was the first popular browser that had a
00:44graphical user interface, or GUI for short. It was founded in 1994 and quickly became one of the
00:51most popular browsers at the time, only second to the leader, which was Internet Explorer. But after
00:56IE came on the scene, Netscape lost its market share and eventually got bought out by AOL in 1998.
01:03But this is where things get interesting. In addition to being engineers at Netscape,
01:08Jamie and Blake were also part of something called the Open Source Development Labs, or OSDL.
01:14Through their work at Netscape, they realized that a lot of the code that they were writing wasn't
01:18being used. So they wanted to find a way to allow other developers to use it. And this is when
01:25they decided to create an open source browser based on Netscape Navigator called Mozilla.
01:30They brought on a few other Netscape employees and a few members from OSDL to help them,
01:35and together they released the first version of Mozilla in 2002.
