00:00Welcome back to the Anthem, the site of tonight's NBA Draft Party in D.C.
00:05It's going to be a blast. We are thrilled to be here.
00:07Grant and Danny with you on the fan, and we're pleased to be joined right now by our buddy Glenn
00:11Consor.
00:12Of course, you know him from the Wizards Radio Network here on the fan and over on the Team 980
00:17and for so many years on television and down talking Wiz as well.
00:21Glenn, what a day for this organization, for this fan base.
00:25So many years in the making, too.
00:27Yeah, you know what this is? It's joy.
00:30It's pure joy given the fact, and I love you guys.
00:33You know that. I love listening to you and all the torture that you guys have talked about
00:38over the last couple of years that you've lived through because you're fans
00:42and you want the organization to do well, and now they have a really think about it.
00:46They just signed Trey Young. You know, Anthony Davis is in the waiting.
00:49All the young players. I think I told this to one of the Wizards management guys.
00:54I'm almost more excited about what we have coming back than as excited as I am about this draft pick
01:01because all those guys improved this year.
01:04You add this draft pick who could be impactful, you got something.
01:07Glenn, you've been around the game for so many years, and I love your acumen talking about this.
01:12Help me and some Wizards fans understand here.
01:14So I think the best way to develop in a pure development situation is you just throw guys at the
01:20wall
01:21and say sink or swim, right?
01:22And if you lose, it doesn't matter.
01:23Now as you try to turn the corner and say let's win some more games,
01:26Trey Young's got the basketball more.
01:28Whoever it is that won, the guy's coming back.
01:31Develop, yes, but also still try to compete.
01:33How do you walk that tightrope now as you're trying to maybe count some more wins and losses?
01:37Yeah, well, first of all, I think over the last two years when we got Bilal and Alex
01:44and last year with Trey and Will, those guys got major minutes.
01:50Huge minutes, yeah.
01:50Like minutes that most rookies and first and second year players don't get.
01:56Because of that, they really rapidly have improved their games.
02:00I could break that down all you want because that's all I talked about over the last two years
02:04is how they've improved.
02:05So now you add a guy, you add somebody, whether it's Peterson or DeBanzo or Cameron Boozer
02:11or Caleb Wilson, one of those guys, you add an impact player plus Trey.
02:16Trey knows how to play with those guys.
02:18You've got a guy like Trey and Anthony Davis.
02:21Trey Young, because of his high assist level, he's one of these point guards that is not ball dominant.
02:27In other words, you know, he can shoot and he can score when he needs to,
02:31but he also understands how to get other players involved.
02:34So I think that's where and when you'll see the beginning of this big turnaround for this organization.
02:43To that point, and Glenn Consor's with us, one of the stats you saw yesterday floating around
02:48as he signed his $212 million extension was that Trey Young's the first guy since Oscar Robertson
02:53to average 25 points and 10 assists for a career.
02:57Right.
02:58I'd almost like to see him closer to like 20 points and 12 assists.
03:02Right.
03:03And setting everybody up and maybe not being as ball dominant or the score.
03:07And when you think about it, like I think of this as who he is.
03:10That's who he was with that Hawks team where you had Capella and all these guys who like weren't getting
03:15their own shots.
03:16The Wizards have a lot of guys that might be able to.
03:17They do.
03:18And I think, you know, I think about Trey's game because I'm a big fan and I have been
03:24and I have heard all the rumblings of how he was in Atlanta and what fell apart in Atlanta for
03:30him.
03:31This is an opportunity for him to change his legacy, you know, to work with the young players,
03:37to get them the ball where they can be successful, to understand what it's going to take to win,
03:42what he has to do to help this team win.
03:44And so this is his opportunity, you know, at 27, 28 years old, which is what he is,
03:50to turn that corner and show everyone just how great he is.
03:54And we know he can play that way.
03:56So for, again, whoever it is tonight, we can narrow it down to the top two or whoever you want.
04:01The thing I've kind of argued as you've gathered these assets, give them a chance to play and improve,
04:06you're kind of building the nest for this new guy to kind of be with a lead goose
04:10or just somebody to come in here and take an instrumental role.
04:13It's going to be hard, I think, for fans to be patient still with that because it's like,
04:17okay, he's here, give me 30, give me 12, give me, you know, 10 assists, et cetera.
04:21And that's obviously not the way the league works, as you know, very well.
04:24But that process of both integrating this player, getting them used to the NBA,
04:27but also saying, you know what, you're probably, you've got a chance to be a star.
04:30How do you build that?
04:31You know, if you think about the number one picks through the years,
04:36so many of them have been Hall of Fame players.
04:38There's been some busts, number one picks, but, you know, there's a very strong likelihood
04:43that whoever we pick here, the Wizards pick here, at number one,
04:48it could be the face of the franchise, an all-star player, an all-NBA player, a Hall of Fame
04:55player.
04:55So, you know, it remains to be seen.
04:59But with those four guys that everyone's talking about, those guys have an opportunity
05:04and they have the skill set, the versatility offensively and on the defensive end
05:10to become all-stars in this league.
05:12And it doesn't happen overnight.
05:14You know, you think about Wemby when he first came into the league.
05:17It takes time to kick in.
05:19Even Cooper Flagg when he first came into the league.
05:22You think about all the great ones.
05:23There is some time.
05:24So what I'm going to say to the fans is let the dust settle a little bit
05:29and let this team play.
05:31And think about it.
05:32Trae Young, Anthony Davis are going to play with Will and Keyshawn and Bilal
05:38and all those guys, right, and above.
05:41They haven't played much together.
05:43So there's going to be that time period where they're going to have to develop some chemistry.
05:47I'm glad you said that because one of my reactions to the Trae Young extension,
05:52and there's a lot of things I like about him being around,
05:54one of my concerns is whether it's DeBonsa or it's Peterson,
05:58that you're taking the ball out of their hand a lot early in their career.
06:01I don't know if that's a bad thing.
06:02And maybe that's okay.
06:03You know, when you look around, like I'm thinking of Dylan Harper and some of these guys,
06:06it took a couple years.
06:07So maybe they shouldn't be on the ball constantly in year one.
06:10By the way, to your point on getting the number one pick,
06:13I saw this from your colleague Chris Miller today.
06:15I thought this was a great stat.
06:16Teams that held the number one overall pick averaged plus 8.2 wins the following season
06:20from an average of 24 and change to 33 the following year.
06:25So that's just as an aside for the impact you're getting.
06:28This is obviously a whole different situation.
06:30Trae Young's only played five games.
06:31You're going to unveil and unwrap Anthony Davis as well.
06:34Right.
06:34Let's just hypothetically say it's DeBonsa for a second.
06:37Nobody knows anything.
06:38We've been trying to figure out it's kind of fun to just play that game,
06:41like what a starting lineup could look like.
06:43Do you think more likely Keyshawn George is the two, DeBonsa is the three,
06:48and then a guy like Bilal is off the bench with a Trae Johnson?
06:52How could that look?
06:53I think you've got to earn it.
06:55I think, you know, it's going to depend on the number one pick
06:58and how he looks early on in summer league and then during training camp,
07:03more so even during training camp because, you know, you play in the summer league,
07:07which, you know, is sometimes misleading.
07:10You know, the MVP of the summer league, they get cut the next year.
07:13Right.
07:13So, like, don't read too much into that.
07:16Would you agree that if you're good in the summer league,
07:18it doesn't necessarily mean a lot?
07:19If you're bad in the summer league, it's a bad sign?
07:21Yes.
07:22Yeah.
07:22Yeah.
07:23I do.
07:24But, you know, I don't know who's going to start, but I do know this.
07:28You know, Alex and AD, that's a pretty formidable front line.
07:31You know, and, you know, if you get a DeBonsa or a Peterson,
07:33someone that could score like that and that has that type of versatility and length,
07:39and both of those guys could be sneaky good defenders.
07:43So, you know, with Trey at the point, I think Keyshawn, to me,
07:49was one of the most improved players in the league last year.
07:52I know he was out quite a bit, but, boy, he really impressed me with what he was doing
07:57at the end of last year from when he first came into the NBA was just a tremendous improvement.
08:03I know this is probably like asking a parent, and you are one, so happy late Father's Day.
08:07You too.
08:09Both of you guys.
08:09All of us, yes.
08:10To pick their favorite kid.
08:12But in a world where, like, I think I probably overweight Will Riley now,
08:15where I'm like, you cannot move this guy.
08:17I think he could be great.
08:18Is there one of these guys that you think maybe we don't even know how good he is yet
08:22that you just think there's still a lot in the tank that people haven't seen?
08:27Yeah, I think there's multiple players, and you hit the nail on the head.
08:29Will Riley, I've been talking about him.
08:32I mean, he just blew me away last year.
08:34What he can do is unguardable.
08:35You couldn't guard the guy.
08:37You know, great pivot moves and very shifty and crafty, and he's 6'9".
08:42Yeah.
08:43And he could still be growing.
08:44You know, he's got a very unique skill set of tremendous feel,
08:50how to score and when to score.
08:53That's rare.
08:54I think Keyshawn George's in that boat, and I think Alex Sarr's in that boat as well.
08:58Let's go into Sarr.
08:59And Bilal, wait, Bilal too.
09:00Bilal all of a sudden at the end of the year was scoring.
09:03So, you know, he jacked up his game.
09:05He 100% did.
09:06The year one to year two jump for Sarr, shot selection,
09:09getting his better spots on the floor.
09:12Then all of a sudden those threes felt more in rhythm,
09:14whereas year one, explore the space, young man.
09:16We'll see what happens.
09:17I think a Trey Young would be massive for him.
09:19I think maybe playing with another big might be massive for him in Davis.
09:23But where did you see his progress?
09:25And I don't think it means it's a finished product yet.
09:27He's still just a 21-year-old kid at this stage.
09:30Where do you see his game going over the next couple of years
09:33with, again, another superstar to take some of the attention away?
09:36You're talking about Alex Sarr.
09:36Sarr.
09:37Yeah.
09:37Alex Sarr, to me, completely changed his game second year from the first year
09:43because on pick and rolls, he wasn't playing the pick and pop game.
09:46Not only was he rolling, but he was welcoming contact.
09:49So he got really a lot stronger, which is what, you know,
09:53I think you're going to see that with this draft class too.
09:56There could be 15 freshmen picked in the first round.
09:59Yep.
09:5915.
10:00That's unheard of.
10:01You know what that also means?
10:02Their bodies haven't developed.
10:03You know, maybe with the exception of Cam Boozer,
10:06who's the youngest player in this draft, he's got a great body.
10:09But his body's going to change too.
10:11So, you know, you look at these guys, Alex Sarr's acumen offensive,
10:15his offensive game, he started to understand how to score inside.
10:20I really liked the way he, when he was double teamed,
10:22he kicked out of double teams.
10:24So he's learning how to play.
10:25Look, he also didn't grow up here.
10:28So, you know, that aspect of it really changed.
10:31Glenn Consor is going to be all over the stage in the party this evening
10:35with his broadcast partner, Dave Johnson.
10:38They are your hosts of the Wizards Draft Party out here at the Anthem
10:41where we're broadcasting live.
10:43Enjoy the night.
10:44It should be an absolute blast.
10:45People in town, as you know, are just giddy.
10:48I mean, this is an electric evening.
10:49And they should be.
10:50And you know what?
10:51The fans deserve it.
10:52Grant and Danny deserve it.
10:54And for goodness sakes, so do I.
10:55Yeah.
10:56You and Dave Hill.
10:57You definitely deserve it.
10:59I mean, we have the ability to multitask with other things.
11:02You're doing post-game shows, giving out gift cards to Fly 15 years ago,
11:06talking about the JaVale McGee rebounds.
11:09You know what I'm saying?
11:10You've earned it.
11:10You've earned this thing, man.
11:11Oh, man.
11:12I forgot about Fly.
11:14We haven't.
11:15He called a bunch.
11:17We know Fly.
11:18Is he still around, Fly?
11:19I haven't heard from him in a long time.
11:20It's been a minute.
11:21It's been a minute.
11:22I hope he's still listening somewhere.
11:23I hope he went through all his Carmine's gift cards.
11:26He got a few of those for sure.
11:28That's great stuff.
11:29Glenn, thank you, buddy.
11:30Great to see you guys.
11:31You're my favorite two guys.
11:32Appreciate you.
11:33Let's talk nationally about this draft class and the rest of the board
11:37after Washington with Matt McCall, former college coach, next.
