00:00I know someone that will be camped out in Berea and we want to say I hope you had a
00:04good summer
00:04to attend Mary Kay Cabot obviously from the Orange and Brown podcast big hit around town
00:11want to make sure you're watching that and of course you read her on cleveland.com and the
00:15plain dealer and right now she's on the wise art right we make it right call cow right hotline
00:19hi Mary Kay how are you okay I'm doing great guys how you doing we're good are you all set
00:25for Thursday you got like a little snack bag packed and all of your reporter pads that you
00:28can write down all of your great information and you can listen to all this stuff because it's back
00:32on Thursday isn't it here we go or am I jumping the gun no it is it's game on not
00:37not this Thursday
00:39it's not until next week for us the reporting date this week doesn't really mean much for us we're
00:46not out there covering practice until July 29th but this is definitely a week to gear back up to
00:52get your game face on and to get all your ducks in a row and get your drones ready so
00:57you can fly over
00:57and get good video that we're not supposed to get that's what we want to do Mary Kay let's go
01:01wait is Bill Belichick on the line sorry exactly this isn't North Carolina football weekly come on
01:07man okay um do you think many veterans what do you think the turnout will be Mary Kay when the
01:16rookies show up on on Thursday will they have veteran company are they allowed to have veteran company
01:22no I mean it's really a time for um the rookies injured guys and and whoever else they select to
01:28come in early and report early and get going um that will be here so again this is not something
01:34where you're going to be seeing practice video where you're going to be seeing interviews and
01:39stories coming up this week this is not uh what that's about so uh for the fans purposes it really
01:46will all get rolling next week on the 29th Mary Kay what rookie are you most looking forward to
01:52covering here during the camp to see what kind of impact they'll have and probably be out there week one
01:58well I would think that um Casey Concepcion is one that I'm really going to be watching
02:04I think they can do so many different things with him uh he's so dynamic he can play inside and
02:11out he
02:11can do gadget things uh there's a lot that he's going to be able to do for them I'm sure
02:16he can
02:16probably uh just flat out run the ball jet sweeps so I think he's going to be really really
02:22fascinating and I know he's been working really hard we've seen that the receivers actually all
02:29went down to Miami and worked out with Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders they all worked on their
02:35timing and chemistry they did things off the field together and just in talking to Shador about that
02:41at his youth football camp on Sunday afternoon uh he talked about how beneficial all that was
02:47so I can't wait to see how some of these guys come back ready to go and especially probably both
02:53Casey
02:53Concepcion and then Denzel Boston I want to see them against Denzel Ward Grant Delpit and you know with
03:00some a little bit more pressure on the quarterback so it's going to be exciting
03:04okay is is Casey Concepcion going to be more and I don't mean this in a negative way more gadget
03:12player
03:12or more wide receiver oh he's going to be more wide receiver there's no question about that and then
03:18also he will return pons and things like that too so he can be an all-purpose guy but you
03:24just have to
03:25make sure that you are giving him uh a plate that he can handle you don't want to overdo it
03:31with him in
03:31the beginning you don't want him to have him out there running deep routes and then trying to
03:35return a punt uh so you have to be a little bit careful with that aspect of it but he
03:40should uh
03:41you know he should be able to contribute in multiple ways. Mary Kay what do you think about
03:46the fact that Deshaun did have Shador at that camp Watson or whatever I wonder was Gabriel there too
03:51I haven't heard that or not but um I do think it's interesting that Watson feels confident in himself
03:56to have his own you know uh passing camp and to invite Shador down I think that's actually a good
04:02thing for fans. Well we knew back in mini camp that Shador was going to be attending this camp and
04:09I've
04:09been portraying it as though they kind of co-hosted it although it was pretty much uh set up by
04:14Deshaun
04:14Watson but he enabled Shador to be a part of that and to help him with this and I think
04:19that
04:19was fantastic it's a it's a show of unity for those guys a show of solidarity and that will be
04:26good
04:26for the team as they head into training camp the last thing anybody needs is a divisive quarterback
04:32battle you need to be on the same page you need to get everybody going in the same direction and
04:37you
04:37need to have the receivers not feel like they're choosing sides or doing things like that so I think
04:41it was really really good uh I I caught up for a second with Gage Larverdain at the um at
04:47the youth
04:48camp and and he talked about how great it was and you could just see in some of the clips
04:53both on the
04:54field and off the field uh that it was a really great thing so I think we're going to see
04:58a very
04:59up-tempo snappy camp right from the jump uh with a lot of really good exciting offense. Don't you
05:05think though that we need Deshaun or Shador to you know to at the end of the day little egos
05:10got
05:11to pop in there because one of them is going to get to take as long as everybody says healthy
05:16one of them is going to say hike around that first snap of the year and that they need to
05:20have
05:20the confidence of knowing they're not getting pulled out for the other guy. Well I think uh what's
05:27cool about this competition so far when you watch it it's almost like they are going head to head in
05:34everything that they're doing. Deshaun shows up in Berea to work out with actually he had his uh some of
05:41his private coaches and trainers with him he showed up here to kind of send the message that even
05:47during his summer break that he's going to be going the extra mile and he's not going to let
05:52this opportunity pass him by and then the week after that Shador showed up in Berea and kind of
05:58did the same thing and then Deshaun goes down to Miami Shador goes with him you know you'll see one
06:04guy working out like crazy online and then you see uh another guy you'll see Shador out there posting
06:10a video of himself uh throwing passes with his eyes closed and completing five of five so uh it's
06:16been fascinating so far and these guys are really just going gangbusters and bringing out the best in
06:23each other. Does there come a point where one of these guys actually comes out and says yeah I'm
06:29planning to beat this guy out because it seems like it's been a big group hug so far Mary Kay.
06:35Well I they pretty much have both already said that I mean when you when we asked Deshaun
06:40point blank about how important it was for him to start he said yeah it's important it's important
06:46and it should be important for everyone so no one has said hey I'm going to win this thing uh
06:51but
06:51it's definitely stated in other ways and it's implied and and both of them are putting their best
06:58foot forward right now. I asked this question earlier in the week does Todd Munkin's honeymoon period
07:02end when he chooses one of the quarterbacks it doesn't matter it doesn't matter who it is like
07:08the fans who wanted the other guy to start are going to like start giving him the evil eye so
07:13I do
07:13how much longer does Todd Munkin's uh honeymoon period last? Well certainly we all know and we
07:20cannot shy away from the the fact that uh the fan base is more excited about Shador than they are
07:29about Deshaun right now that's just how it's been uh because of numerous factors uh but I don't know
07:36if that's the end of the honeymoon period for for Todd Munkin if he chooses Deshaun Watson as his
07:41starter I'm sure there will be plenty of backlash there will be plenty of uh social media outrage but
07:47if Deshaun goes out there and looks anything like the quarterback that the Browns thought they were
07:53getting when they traded for him then I think all of that dies down it's up to him and he
07:58knows
07:58that this is the chance that he has he knows he can change the narrative get his career back on
08:04track and when you see him working out and training and doing the things that he's doing
08:08he's in phenomenal shape and I do think that fans will climb on board not everybody but I think
08:16there's a segment of the fan base that will climb back on board if he goes out and plays really
08:22good
08:22football the defense has been something we haven't talked about I I think enough Mary Kay in this
08:29offseason do you think it um do you think it's improved from a personnel standpoint even with
08:36miles being traded and do you expect drastic differences with Mike Grudenberg as opposed to
08:44Jim Schwartz I'm not going to say drastic differences because they kept the coaching staff intact and they
08:51kept the personnel largely intact now of course uh when you remove miles from the equation uh that is
08:57like ripping the terminal tower out of Cleveland but uh I still think that uh there's going to be
09:04plenty of continuity from what you saw this defense do before with Mike Grudenberg then also putting his
09:10own stamp on it I think he'll bring some different things to the secondary you might see a little bit
09:15more zone a little bit less man perhaps and you probably will see some different things from
09:20the defensive front because he's got a great background and working with some amazing coaches
09:25that may have done some different things up front as well so very curious to see how that's all going
09:30to play out uh and I think it's just an opportunity for Jared Burst to step up and say hey
09:35look at me
09:36and I'm going to show you guys something that's going to make you kind of forget about Miles Garrett
09:41and we're calling him V8 right I read that last story you guys I like it for Jared Burst calling
09:48him
09:48V8 yeah that's that's fun and again he knows he doesn't have to uh completely replace Miles Garrett
09:55nobody can fill those enormous shoes uh but I think he's going to make his own mark and put his
10:00own
10:00stamp on this defense in his own way and I've said this numerous times I like what I see from
10:05a team
10:06building from a camaraderie standpoint from him and from the way he brings guys together I think he's
10:11going to be hanging out with these guys in a way that Miles never did and I think that translates
10:15sometimes over to the field speaking of hanging out I mean obviously continuity and camaraderie makes
10:20it makes a difference on the offensive line your thoughts on that what needs to happen during camp
10:25for these guys to be effective during the regular season well that's a big x factor that offensive line
10:30nobody knows exactly how the offensive line is going to come together and right now they don't even
10:36know yet exactly who the starting five will be there's still a question mark at center still a
10:41question mark at right guard so until you have that starting five established and you get those guys
10:47working together in concert you don't know exactly what you're going to get and then you don't know
10:52what you're going to get when you get into a game and the lights are on and the chips are
10:57down and you've
10:58been game planned for and whatnot so they're going to have to see how Spencer Fano can can handle the
11:04storm
11:04that's going to be coming at him and how whoever is going to be starting at center is going to
11:10handle
11:10their new responsibilities so there's a lot of unknowns there and you know nobody can make any promises
11:17right at this moment Mary Kay if last year's starting center Ethan Posick is healthy enough and good enough
11:23to be signed by Baltimore to compete to be their starting center should the Browns have kept him
11:30well I think that remains to be seen I think they were ready to turn the page there I don't
11:34think
11:34they probably wanted to pay him what he was going to be able to get somewhere else and then also
11:40when
11:40you have some someone coming off of an Achilles that happened late in the season sometimes you do have
11:47to just move on and pivot and make sure that you're good to go in that area so that's what
11:53they did
11:53they're in a youth movement we all know that and it was just time to kind of rip the band
11:58-aid off
11:59and and go complete overhaul in that line Mary Kay um what do you have coming up here uh in
12:05the
12:05paper plane dealer club.com just so we can get ready for uh camp and we're looking forward to reading
12:09your
12:09stuff but uh just kind of your approach to camp and uh what can readers look forward to well you
12:16know
12:16we do so much as you guys know and that's what I love about the new responsibilities of of journalism
12:23is the fact that I get to do a podcast every day a radio show every day a video uh
12:28and the writing
12:29part of it is now just one part of it and that's what makes it so fun but I'm really
12:34looking forward
12:34to finding the stories to telling the stories I love to tell stories and get people behind a player
12:41uh for reasons they may not have ever thought of so I'm excited to check in with some guys
12:46and get ready to go. Mary Kay we're looking forward to it you know we're reading you every day and
12:51we're watching it on the podcast as well the uh orange and brown podcast that you have all the
