00:01:50a diamond but it was red like red and in the center of it it was a little brighter in

00:01:57then it like pulsed like you know outward and that's why I thought it was drawing something from

00:03:50third for you it was always the same time at night and it wasn't long after that we moved I

00:03:56my hometown and then I swore that I'd never come back to this road but the the diamond shaped thing

00:06:06It's a city that's always shining, so at night, when I look up, I don't see much of anything.

00:06:13My name is Shannon LeGroix.

00:06:16But maybe you already knew that, which means you probably also know that I collect stories.

00:06:24Stories about the bizarre and unexplained.

00:06:29Currently, I'm collecting stories about UFOs, or UAPs, or flying saucers, or whatever you want to call them.

00:06:40I'm in West Virginia, the mountain state.

00:06:43A place I've never spent much time in, but whose connection to the unusual is inescapable.

00:06:53You see, despite its reputation as being out of the way, West Virginia has been tied to the UFO phenomenon

00:07:00for over a century.

00:07:03Want to know why?

00:07:04Well, so do I.

00:07:06In search for the truth behind the existence and origin of these strange objects people are seeing over our heads,

00:07:13most have stopped looking up.

00:07:16But here in the heart of Appalachia, taking a second to stop and stare into the dark sky might mean

00:07:24the difference between just another boring night and having an encounter with something that'll change your life.

00:07:45As a kid, did you get a read that it's a weird state, that strange things happen here?

00:07:49Um, yeah. Especially in Moundsville.

00:07:54Can we talk about your sightings, the things you've experienced for yourself?

00:07:58The one main one that I'm pretty sure it was something, in my opinion, weird, it was a very clear

00:08:04day like it is today.

00:08:06My pap and I were out shooting hoops in the backyard.

00:08:08I was probably between 10 and 13.

00:08:11I went to shoot the basketball up, and out of the left corner of my eye, I noticed something like

00:08:16reflecting in the sky.

00:08:17And I paid more attention to it after, you know, I noticed it.

00:08:26And it looked like, like a mirror, like something was reflecting, like a light was reflecting off of a mirror.

00:08:33And there may or may not have been smaller, like little detail, like where it might have been multiple different

00:08:38lights, or it might have been different panels of something reflective.

00:08:44Did you hear anything when you saw it?

00:08:47No.

00:08:47But my pap saw it, we both saw it, and then that's what my grandfather shared with me, the experience

00:08:51he had when he was younger.

00:08:53And he said, I was out playing in the front yard, and I looked south, and above the ridge line,

00:08:58it's like this dark, gray, brownish-looking disc.

00:09:02It came, like over the hill, and stopped, and then it went straight up in the air, and then it

00:09:08disappeared.

00:09:09Did you get a sense that what you were looking at was like a solid object?

00:09:13It looked like a solid object.

00:09:15Have you ever wondered what its purpose might have been in that place at that time?

00:09:19Being where it was at, and how high it was, it's hard to tell.

00:09:24Are there any, like, mines or caves in Moundsville or in that area?

00:09:30Oh, yeah. I mean, Moundsville's a coal mine town.

00:09:33Wheeling pretty much is, too.

00:09:35I know there's a lot of old coal mine shafts under Moundsville.

00:09:38There's a lot of underground streams, a lot of unused coal mine shafts underneath Moundsville right now that have water

00:09:43running through them to the Ohio River, so.

00:10:06So, West Virginia is larger than I was expecting.

00:10:10It's defined by its back roads and hills and hollers, and by a history that feels ancient.

00:10:19I've only been here a short time, but in that span, I've already learned about sightings around the state of

00:10:25strange craft, lights in the sky, and even heard whispers of government cover-ups.

00:10:31I've always thought of myself as simply a collector of stories, but this time, I'm trying to dig deeper, to

00:10:39piece together some of the clues that are laid out with each eyewitness account.

00:10:45But to start analyzing the case laid out before me, I want to understand the people who live here, the

00:10:52culture of the area.

00:10:56If anyone would know, it should be him.

00:11:01That's why I'm in Wheeling.

00:11:03It's a bustling, industrial town on the Ohio River that is known as the City of Lights today.

00:11:11Its original moniker, though, was far darker.

00:11:16Native Americans called the land where Wheeling sits, Weelunk, which meant the place of the skull.

00:11:24So named, due to the decapitated heads that lined its bank to ward off those attempting to make a home

00:11:31here.

00:11:33When the area was eventually claimed by European settlers, they made the questionable decision of sticking with the name Wheeling.

00:11:42A fitting origin story for a town that acts as an entryway into the Ohio Valley.

00:11:48So, I mean, as far as West Virginia, have you grown up here?

00:11:51Yeah, I grew up here.

00:11:52My paternal grandparents came over from Ireland in 1905 and built the farmhouse that my family still lives in today.

00:11:59And how did you end up in Wheeling?

00:12:01You know, that's a good question.

00:12:03Family lore is that we came in through New York and we kind of traveled around for a little while.

00:12:07But it seems like people from the British Isles are attracted to this area and I think it's because it's

00:12:12the same mountain range.

00:12:14We have a common bond here with these mountains.

00:12:17It's like the bones of the world almost.

00:12:21How long have you owned the restaurant?

00:12:24We've been in downtown West Virginia for six and a half years.

00:12:27What about, you know, weird stories?

00:12:30I mean, you're probably familiar with Mothman, everybody is.

00:12:33But what about other stories in the area?

00:12:35Point Pleasant does the Mothman Festival every year.

00:12:37And they've been doing that for a long time.

00:12:40But I feel like especially recently, it's really caught hold of the cultural zeitgeist in the state.

00:12:44But the supernatural stuff is really strong in Appalachia.

00:12:49And I've spent some time down in Canaan Valley in the Davis-Thomas, West Virginia area.

00:12:53And there's just a lot of weird stuff.

00:12:56And people are diving a little deeper into that than they have in a long time.

00:13:00But there's just something about the hills and the hollows of this area that, especially the light quality and at

00:13:07dawn or dusk, like I've seen all kinds of weird shit.

00:13:09But I'm not prepared to say what it is, but, you know, I've seen plenty of things.

00:13:14And I feel like, again, our brain has this false pattern recognition.

00:13:19And we put together the puzzle in a certain way to make sense of our experiences.

00:13:23And, you know, I think there's a lot of stuff out there that we don't understand.

00:13:30From deposits, West Virginia has coal enough to last the nation for generations.

00:13:44Tell us about the state of West Virginia and its ties to coal mining.

00:13:49Coal mining is a very important part of West Virginia history.

00:13:52It's been going on for over 150, 200 years.

00:13:55Helped build America, helped power America, helped us win two world wars.

00:14:00It is fully ingrained into people's personalities, even.

00:14:04What mining is, what it is.

00:14:06It's more than a job.

00:14:07It's more than an occupation.

00:14:08It is everything to a lot of people.

00:14:12In terms of UFOs, aliens, the Mothman pulls you in as a young age.

00:14:17I saw the movie when it came out, then bought the book,

00:14:20thinking that it would be similar and it's a lot better.

00:14:26Been hooked into it ever since.

00:14:30Appalachia is nothing, if not a haven, for stories and storytellers.

00:14:34One of the keepers of the Mountain State's legends and lore was author, poet, tour guide and mother, Susan Shepard.

00:14:44I've been aware of Susan's work for years, but this was our first time to meet.

00:14:48And to hear her unfold years of paranormal history in minutes was truly a thrill and offered a unique insight

00:14:56into how stories are told and retold.

00:15:00If anyone is aware of the Appalachian's ufological history, it was Susan.

00:15:05What were some of the commonalities of UFO sightings that were taking place during that time frame?

00:15:12What were people seeing?

00:15:14Well, mostly lights in the sky was big among them.

00:15:19There was one case where my former mother-in-law was stepping out of the house one evening

00:15:23and there were these spinning lights, just these spinning lights right over her head.

00:15:28And she went right back inside and then they vanished.

00:15:31There was another incidence where my grandmother, she was walking by the window

00:15:37and she looked up and she saw in the distant sky, she saw a red light, a green light and

00:15:45a white light

00:15:46and they would flash intermittently.

00:15:49Now at that time she called them tokens because she didn't really know what a UFO was.

00:15:54She thought it was some kind of sign, is what she thought that, but it was mostly lights in the

00:15:59sky.

00:16:00The oldest sighting in the state potentially was in 1950 at a place called Mount Hope.

00:16:04The mayor of the town actually saw something in the eastern sky near his home.

00:16:10He saw a light zipping about that was not normal.

00:16:14As far as I know, the records are lost.

00:16:17The connection between the study of UFOs and West Virginia is, in some ways,

00:16:23there's quintessential cases from West Virginia that you have to talk about

00:16:28if you're talking about major flaps that have taken place in the United States.

00:16:32So it really is instrumental, although that's not the first state people think of in terms of UFOs.

00:16:41I don't think that you can take a complete look at the topic without looking at the cases

00:16:47from the Mountain State of Flatwoods as one that is gaining notoriety

00:16:52and if you look back historically, it's one that has to be dealt with along with many of the major

00:16:58flaps of the 1950s.

00:17:01Any true UFO historian is aware of the Flatwoods monster case.

00:17:06In August of 1952, a bizarre being was encountered on a hill late one evening

00:17:11following a string of reported UFO sightings across the eastern United States.

00:17:16The creature was sighted by a group of locals, most of them just kids,

00:17:21during a terrifying ordeal that became a media sensation across the country.

00:17:26The event helped to shine a light on the weird activity taking place in the strange little state of West

00:17:32Virginia

00:17:33and bolstered the name of one of West Virginia's most well-known UFO figures, Gray Barker.

00:17:40But before we get to Barker, let's visit the tiny hamlet of Sutton,

00:17:45home to the Flatwoods Monster Museum and a hub for ongoing unusual activity.

00:17:51So, how long have you had the museum here?

00:17:55We established the museum here in downtown Sutton in October of 2018.

00:18:03A big reason why people come to the area or are interested in the area,

00:18:06particularly from really far away, is because of the Flatwoods Monster.

00:18:10So, I talked to my board and we decided having a Flatwoods Monster Museum makes a lot of sense

00:18:14in conjunction with the Visitor Center.

00:18:17Now, I saw something about a rash of sightings, like, around the 1950s.

00:18:21Can you talk about that?

00:18:22Yes.

00:18:23As far as I know, there were a lot of sightings that took place in the 50s,

00:18:28and, you know, most notably starting with the Flatwoods Monster case that took place in 52.

00:18:33I think maybe a sighting or two that took place before that of UFO phenomena, things like that,

00:18:40but a lot after as well, going into the mid-50s and maybe even beyond.

00:18:45And I've heard a lot of stories that, according to the people that told them to me,

00:18:49they've either never shared them with anybody else, or if they have just really close friends,

00:18:55they want to get it off their chest to somebody that they know won't make fun of them.

00:18:59Because, obviously, if we have this, they see a place where weird things are kind of, you know,

00:19:05accepted or can be discussed without feeling ridicule.

00:19:13The Flatwoods case became a seminal moment in Braxton County history,

00:19:17but what was overlooked in the days following the incident

00:19:20was the rash of sightings of strange craft across the entire United States,

00:19:26as well as other sightings of beings matching the Green Monster's description.

00:19:31While digging into the tale of what was once dubbed the Green Monster,

00:19:35I came across accounts in Wheeling of a similar creature that the local media had dubbed Bashful Billy.

00:19:42A long-forgotten side story to the Flatwoods monster saga is the UFO wave over Wheeling,

00:19:48which also took place on August 15th, just three nights following the Flatwoods' events.

00:19:55That point in time in American history, the mid-50s, was so big for UFOs with Project Blue Book

00:20:02and everything else going on that it was almost destined, I feel like, to happen at one point in time

00:20:07in Wheeling.

00:20:08The Wheeling Intelligencer and the police department and the Wheeling News Registers and newspapers at the time

00:20:13had been getting flooded with calls for the last couple of days, from the 12th to the 15th, 16th,

00:20:18about seeing several meteorites burning objects in the sky, things like that.

00:20:24Disappearing weird turns, weird low-object flights, and that includes Wheeling, St. Clairsville,

00:20:30Zanesville, Ohio, Cambridge, West Liberty, Glendale, McMeckin, West Virginia,

00:20:35including even Morgantown, Garrett County, Maryland.

00:20:40There was odd sightings all across the state, across Ohio, across Pennsylvania.

00:20:45Even Baltimore had sightings, and all this ties in sort of with the Flatwoods monster,

00:20:50which happened on the 12th, to the point where, you know, the newspapers and the police department

00:20:55weren't really investing any more time into the whole thing.

00:20:58And then it culminated with this bashful Billy sighting.

00:21:01Around September 15th, I believe, there was a crash landing of a UFO,

00:21:07and it was shortly after that, that people started reporting that they saw a monster of some sort

00:21:15at Vineyard Hills in Wheeling, which is a housing development area.

00:21:19People had called the police, saying that they saw, or heard that someone saw,

00:21:25a creature that was large, seven to nine feet tall, had the ability to breathe fire, a noxious odor.

00:21:33There was a lot of raging reports by times that it got to the newspapers as widely blown up

00:21:38as a half robot slash half man, half dragon creature.

00:21:42There was a drawing that I found once that was almost like it came out of, like, a 1600s fairy

00:21:48book.

00:21:49It was just way overdone.

00:21:50Supposedly a woman had been burned when she got too close to the creature,

00:21:56and there are some unsubstantiated reports that police were there and shots were fired.

00:22:01The only hard evidence was reports of a police officer who had his arm burned

00:22:07and a woman who had supposedly deceased and was severely burned from head to toe.

00:22:13It's kind of thought that when the story ran in the Wheeling Intelligencer,

00:22:18and they called it Bashful Billy, that that was sort of a way to discredit the creature.

00:22:24But a few nights later, he was seen, or a creature similarly described,

00:22:31was seen across the river, just right across the Ohio River on the Ohio side,

00:22:35and it was the same standard, a creature that was seven to nine feet tall,

00:22:40green body, red face, breathing fire, a noxious odor.

00:22:45I feel like, honestly, even if it landed in a different part of town,

00:22:49Vineyard Hills was a housing development.

00:22:50It was low income.

00:22:52The police, I mean, this is all my opinion,

00:22:54the police at the time had a very low interest in going up there

00:22:58and solving any kind of crimes, let alone paranormal crimes.

00:23:01So I feel like where it landed in this lower income area,

00:23:04it was destined to be forgotten, you know.

00:23:17As a kid, were you very aware of, like, strange things in the skies over West Virginia?

00:23:25I was.

00:23:26I grew up near one of the first Mothman sightings, and I can actually remember that.

00:23:31Of course, the strange case, 1966 going into 1967,

00:23:35where there was a church bus going past our house,

00:23:39they saw a UFO actually hovering over our house.

00:23:43And they called my parents, and that was about the time my parents began to believe in these things.

00:23:49So, yeah, there was tons of things going on, just strange poltergeists, Mothman,

00:23:56men in black, UFOs, hundreds of sightings of UFOs.

00:24:01So the 50s through the 70s, there were all kinds of things happening.

00:24:05There were tons of sightings, UFOs of creatures, things like that,

00:24:09in West Virginia specifically, or just across the river in Ohio.

00:24:13So you get the Ohio Valley, and then deep into West Virginia.

00:24:18You have, this is where, like, the big names come in.

00:24:21You get the Flatwoods monster, you have Mothman in the 60s,

00:24:25you have the Grafton monster in the 50s as well.

00:24:27Almost as if, once one story started, then other people would see something similar,

00:24:33or maybe they were feeling brave enough to come forward at that point in time.

00:24:39Because I've talked to some witnesses that were hesitant at first to say that they saw anything,

00:24:45but once they did talk to a few people, then more would start coming forward.

00:24:48But it's initially getting past that breaking point.

00:24:52So one of the most infamous cases in West Virginia UFO history is the case of Woodrow Derenberger,

00:24:59who, around the same time that things were really jumping off in Point Pleasant in 1967,

00:25:05had an initial encounter going from Parkersburg to Mineral Wells,

00:25:11driving a box truck, and he reports a craft by his truck,

00:25:17but then swinging out in front of him and stopping,

00:25:23making it impossible for him to continue,

00:25:25they had swerved over into the berm,

00:25:28and the figure got out, approached his truck.

00:25:35A man steps out, whom looks like any ordinary man on the street.

00:25:41Looks like he's about 35 years of age, dark hair, dressed in dark clothing,

00:25:45proceeds to walk toward Mr. Derenberger's panel truck,

00:25:49goes around to the side window.

00:25:51He says to Mr. Derenberger,

00:25:52would you roll down your window?

00:25:54Which Mr. Derenberger did.

00:25:57Whoever this figure was communicated to Derenberger,

00:26:00he said, not by speaking, but by direct telepathy.

00:26:04The figure introduced himself as Indrid Cold

00:26:07and claimed that he was from another planet.

00:26:11And Indrid Cold said, I'm a searcher.

00:26:14I'm a searcher.

00:26:16Then he said, Mr. Derenberger, why are you so frightened?

00:26:20He said, I mean you no harm.

00:26:22He said, I bleed just as you do.

00:26:25And he says that several times to reassure him.

00:26:28And after about a five, ten minute conversation,

00:26:32Indrid Cold says to Mr. Derenberger,

00:26:35thank you very much for answering my questions.

00:26:38He says, we, not I, we will see you again.

00:26:42And when he says, we will see you again,

00:26:45this charcoal gray craft comes right back down,

00:26:49begins to hover on the side of the road.

00:26:52The hatch opens, a human arm extends,

00:26:57pulls Indrid Cold up into the craft,

00:26:59goes up into the air about 25 feet

00:27:02where it hovers for a few seconds,

00:27:05makes a fluttering sound.

00:27:07It shoots away at a very high rate of speed.

00:27:10And within a few minutes,

00:27:12Mr. Derenberger gets back to his farmhouse.

00:27:15His wife meets him at the door.

00:27:17And she said, what's happened to you?

00:27:21Why are you late?

00:27:22He said, well, get me a glass of water

00:27:24and I'll tell you why I'm late.

00:27:27Mrs. Derenberger later said,

00:27:29Mr. Derenberger could not have been any whiter

00:27:32if he had been lying in a coffin.

00:27:35Derenberger was very public about this.

00:27:38It got into the papers almost immediately.

00:27:40It made Derenberger a media sensation.

00:27:44And he was soon being talked about

00:27:47both locally and nationally.

00:27:52But it almost seems to me like

00:27:55they seem to target families for some reason.

00:27:58That same year, my uncle worked as an engineer

00:28:02at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

00:28:05He was out coon hunting with two friends.

00:28:08And they come upon this UFO.

00:28:12Again, dark charcoal gray, no lights.

00:28:17A man steps out.

00:28:19My uncle's dog starts going crazy,

00:28:23running around in a circle.

00:28:25The other two men run away.

00:28:27Perfectly human-looking man.

00:28:29Asked my uncle about different things in the area.

00:28:33And it was very similar.

00:28:34Or he said at the end of the conversation,

00:28:37thank you for speaking to me.

00:28:39We will see you again.

00:28:42Gets back into the UFO.

00:28:44You know, shoots up into the air.

00:28:46Goes away at a very high rate of speed.

00:28:49That's all I know of that story.

00:28:51Because my uncle wouldn't talk about it very much.

00:28:55But, you know, I've got that steel trap of a mind.

00:28:59And, you know, everything I heard,

00:29:01either from his brother or from him

00:29:03when they were talking,

00:29:05you know, I absorbed it and I recorded it.

00:29:14Why do you think so much unusual activity

00:29:17takes place in this particular area?

00:29:19I don't know if it's just because

00:29:21that the skies are pretty clear.

00:29:24You know, we don't really have much,

00:29:25you know, smog, you know, stuff like that.

00:29:28When it gets dark, you know, it's dark.

00:29:30So we don't have a lot of light pollution.

00:29:32Some places, you know, more than others.

00:29:35So there's that.

00:29:36And, you know, it's quiet.

00:29:38It feels like to me

00:29:39that there's just the better opportunity,

00:29:41maybe the better environment to see things.

00:29:44And have you had your own sighting?

00:29:47I may have.

00:29:49Well, I had a sighting of something.

00:29:51I don't know what it is.

00:29:52But, yes, it took place about 6.20 p.m.

00:29:56I was driving between the town of Gassaway and Sutton

00:30:00on October 12th of 2019.

00:30:04Me and my wife were driving.

00:30:07And for about a period of 20 seconds

00:30:09while I was driving,

00:30:11the sky was completely clear.

00:30:14As I said, it was in the evening.

00:30:16The sun was working on setting.

00:30:18And as I'm driving,

00:30:20I notice this bright object

00:30:23just setting in the sky.

00:30:25It seemed to be completely still

00:30:27from what I could tell.

00:30:28And it had a yellowish-white collar

00:30:32that I would associate

00:30:34looking a lot like

00:30:35the way the sun's reflection looks

00:30:37on anything shiny.

00:30:38And then I realized,

00:30:39no, it's just a ball.

00:30:40Like, there's no definition to it whatsoever.

00:30:43As I'm looking at it,

00:30:44I'm just thinking,

00:30:45okay, so neither one of those make any sense.

00:30:48So now I don't know what it is.

00:30:50So then as I'm continuing driving,

00:30:52continue to look at it,

00:30:53right about that time,

00:30:56it just went away.

00:30:57There was a period of maybe

00:30:59like two seconds

00:31:01that it went from as bright

00:31:03and glowing as it was

00:31:04to fading into nothing.

00:31:07It was just gone.

00:31:15I wonder sometimes

00:31:16if West Virginia has so much strangeness

00:31:19because people are actually taking time

00:31:21to go out and look around,

00:31:23to look up into the sky.

00:31:26There's just more time to be out

00:31:29and being around things.

00:31:31They're not in the middle.

00:31:32I mean, they have cities,

00:31:33but it's not like the middle of New York City

00:31:35where you're busy

00:31:36and constantly just moving about

00:31:38and milling about.

00:31:38You're into areas

00:31:39where there's very little lighting.

00:31:43You go outside,

00:31:44you just look up at this massive sky.

00:31:46So I think anywhere like that

00:31:48would be more prone

00:31:49to having strangeness occur.

00:31:51It could be, you know,

00:31:52it is a sacred area,

00:31:56especially the Ohio Valley

00:31:57among the Native American tribes.

00:31:59It was also an area

00:32:01that they were afraid of

00:32:02for some reason

00:32:03and they considered it cursed

00:32:05in some way.

00:32:08But it could be the energies

00:32:10from the Indian mounds,

00:32:13the rivers intersecting,

00:32:15or just the plain old reason

00:32:17not much happens here.

00:32:19You notice people notice it more.

00:32:21They talk about things more.

00:32:25The mysterious green monster

00:32:27would eventually make its way

00:32:29into the historical records

00:32:30of ufology,

00:32:31written and spoken about

00:32:33alongside prominent cases

00:32:35like the Betty and Barney Hill abduction

00:32:37or even Roswell.

00:32:39Braxton County has since

00:32:41become a destination

00:32:41for those seeking out information

00:32:43on the famed event.

00:32:45With the Flatwoods Monster Museum

00:32:47stationed as a hub

00:32:48for all things weird in the area.

00:32:51Interestingly enough,

00:32:53Braxton County is at the geographic center

00:32:55of the mountain state.

00:32:57Fitting, considering its importance

00:32:59to the state's

00:33:00ufological history as well.

00:33:02I could see why so many unusual events

00:33:05happen in this particular area.

00:33:07The nearest cities

00:33:08are over 60 miles away.

00:33:12Which might account

00:33:13for the volume of reports

00:33:14in the state of strange lights

00:33:16and craft in the night sky.

00:33:18We were just outside,

00:33:20David, his son, and I,

00:33:21and we were just sitting out there

00:33:23and we happened to glance up

00:33:24and see a light in the sky.

00:33:25And the fact that it was

00:33:27not moving,

00:33:28there was no sounds,

00:33:29was what caught our attention.

00:33:30So we stood there

00:33:30and watched it for a few minutes.

00:33:32And it was basically

00:33:32coming slowly,

00:33:35heading in a northerly direction.

00:33:38And we just watched it.

00:33:39And that's when his son

00:33:40went inside and got him.

00:33:41I got my phone out

00:33:43and videotaped for about a minute

00:33:44is all I did.

00:33:45I forget what time it was,

00:33:47but it was after dark

00:33:48and I was in the process

00:33:49of closing up the store.

00:33:50My son came in and said,

00:33:52Dad, you've got to come outside

00:33:53and come see this.

00:33:55Okay, fine.

00:33:56So I went outside

00:33:57to see what he was concerned about.

00:33:59And I found him and my wife

00:34:01and Janet all looking in the sky

00:34:04towards the south of town.

00:34:08The object originally

00:34:09came from the south of town

00:34:11and came over the ridge

00:34:11on the other side of the river.

00:34:13And then it stopped.

00:34:14And that's when I came out

00:34:16and I saw it

00:34:17when it was in a fixed position.

00:34:18And then while we were all there,

00:34:20that's when it started moving west.

00:34:25And it was just a spherical shape

00:34:28and it was changing colors

00:34:30from an orangish-red to a white.

00:34:32In my estimation,

00:34:34it was about the height

00:34:36you'd see like a small aircraft flying

00:34:38was what I would say was a sphere.

00:34:41And it seemed to be undulating

00:34:43between orange and white.

00:34:52And it sat in the sky

00:34:53for a couple of minutes

00:34:55and we were there watching it.

00:34:58And then it began moving west,

00:35:00like along the river.

00:35:02And so I know, speaking for myself,

00:35:04I think a couple of the others

00:35:05followed me,

00:35:06but we went towards the end

00:35:07of the street

00:35:08to see where it was going.

00:35:11And as it moved west,

00:35:13it just disappeared.

00:35:15And we just watched it

00:35:16just slowly move.

00:35:18There was no sounds.

00:35:19We didn't hear anything

00:35:19of like a drone

00:35:20or an aircraft

00:35:21or a helicopter.

00:35:22And then it did turn direction

00:35:25and start heading

00:35:25in a westerly direction.

00:35:27And then next thing you know,

00:35:28it just disappeared.

00:35:42Any whispers in the next few days

00:35:44after you guys deciding

00:35:45that anybody else saw all this thing?

00:35:47We mentioned it to someone

00:35:48that we know in town

00:35:49or actually just outside of town.

00:35:51And he had an interesting comment.

00:35:54He said that as a kid,

00:35:56he saw something similar to that,

00:35:59which means about 40 or 50 years ago,

00:36:01he would have seen something

00:36:03of that same nature

00:36:04because when we described it to him,

00:36:06or I think it was David Pley.

00:36:07It was the same location.

00:36:08It was around the dam.

00:36:09Yeah.

00:36:11Anything of interest

00:36:12in that area

00:36:13or in or around the ridge

00:36:16where it was stopped?

00:36:18Besides the dam.

00:36:20The dam and the rivers.

00:36:22I mean, you have a history

00:36:23of this stuff happening

00:36:24around the area.

00:36:25Well, and I have a theory about that,

00:36:27but I don't know

00:36:27if you need to go into that.

00:36:28My theory is

00:36:30there have been stories

00:36:31about military bases

00:36:32in West Virginia.

00:36:34And given the nature of the state,

00:36:37low population density,

00:36:39very rural in most areas.

00:36:42And my understanding

00:36:43is that there have been

00:36:46quiet military operations

00:36:47in the state.

00:36:50We've got the FBI

00:36:52has their facility

00:36:53up in Clarksburg,

00:36:53so we know they've got a presence.

00:36:56Green Briar,

00:36:57which is in the south end

00:36:58of the state,

00:36:58that was going to be used

00:36:59in the event

00:37:00of a Cold War nuke attack

00:37:01on Washington.

00:37:02They had that completely

00:37:03set up for Congress.

00:37:05Is there a history

00:37:06of coal mining

00:37:07in this area,

00:37:10like around Sutton,

00:37:11around Flatwoods?

00:37:12There is a coal mine

00:37:13that never went to that one.

00:37:14Now I'm curious to know,

00:37:15why are you asking

00:37:15about the mine?

00:37:16We've heard some ties

00:37:17between sightings

00:37:18of UFOs and coal mines

00:37:20in the state

00:37:20of West Virginia.

00:37:35We left Flatwoods,

00:37:36but remained in Braxton County

00:37:38for the night.

00:37:39Staying in a remote corner

00:37:41on a plot of land

00:37:42situated on top of a mountain

00:37:43that happened to be

00:37:44truly dark sky territory.

00:38:13Here we met up

00:38:13with Ron Lanham

00:38:14and Joe Perdue,

00:38:16paranormal investigators

00:38:18based in the area.

00:38:19They've also brought

00:38:20a witness named Dave

00:38:22who has had

00:38:22his own experience.

00:38:24Ron and Joe's knowledge

00:38:26of the state's history

00:38:27of weirdness

00:38:32But historically,

00:38:37the period of time

00:38:38between like the 50s

00:38:39and the early 80s

00:38:40where you had...

00:38:41Oh, there was the

00:38:42I-64 incident.

00:38:43Yeah, I mean,

00:38:44there's just this constant

00:38:45stream of activity

00:38:46during that time.

00:38:47Can you talk about that?

00:38:48The I-64 incident

00:38:49actually took place

00:38:50right across from

00:38:51what's now

00:38:52Dow Chemical Plant.

00:38:53And that chemical plant

00:38:54used to actually

00:38:55manufacture

00:38:56one of the three

00:38:57necessary parts

00:38:58to make

00:39:01what we would call

00:39:02now weapons

00:39:02of mass destruction,

00:39:03which was the

00:39:04nuclear missiles.

00:39:05That was the rumor.

00:39:06You are correct.

00:39:07They were manufactured

00:39:08at the Dow Chemical Plant.

00:39:10There was a manufacturing

00:39:11plant in the

00:39:12Canola Valley.

00:39:13Where Dow Chemical

00:39:14sets is in a town

00:39:16called Institute.

00:39:18And that is exactly

00:39:19where the I-64

00:39:20sighting took place

00:39:21where this UFO

00:39:22was 50, 60 feet

00:39:24off the interstate.

00:39:26And the gentleman

00:39:27that had the encounter

00:39:28got out of his

00:39:28vehicle

00:39:29and observed this thing

00:39:30for some time

00:39:31before it left

00:39:32and then proceeded

00:39:34to actually make

00:39:35a UFO detection device.

00:39:37He alleged that it worked

00:39:38and he had many reports

00:39:39that he took the device

00:39:40out on.

00:39:41I mean, we went from

00:39:42the 50s all the way up

00:39:43to the 80s,

00:39:45but the 70s

00:39:47was a huge flap.

00:39:47There were several

00:39:48good sightings

00:39:49during that one.

00:39:50That's one I had in mind.

00:39:52There's a lot of

00:39:52those early cases,

00:39:53especially, you know,

00:39:54the 66 and flaps

00:39:56back around Ohio

00:39:58and Point Pleasant

00:39:59and all that.

00:40:00Massive UFO sightings,

00:40:01which people just don't,

00:40:03for whatever reason,

00:40:05really pay that much

00:40:06attention to.

00:40:07They were witnessed

00:40:08by a lot of people.

00:40:10You have so many

00:40:12different things

00:40:12that have happened here.

00:40:13The Appalachian mountain range

00:40:14is the oldest mountain range

00:40:16in the world.

00:40:16It used to be the tallest

00:40:18mountain range in the world.

00:40:19So, depending on how long

00:40:21these UFOs have been around,

00:40:25it's a known target range.

00:40:27It's a landmark

00:40:28that, you know,

00:40:30hasn't really changed

00:40:31other than the fact

00:40:32that it's been eroded

00:40:33and weathered away.

00:40:35But the course is still here.

00:40:37West Virginia

00:40:38is the perfect place

00:40:40to conduct your business

00:40:43if you don't want

00:40:44to be seen.

00:40:51A key piece

00:40:52to the UFO story

00:40:53in this area

00:40:53are encounters

00:40:54with the men in black,

00:40:56enigmatic beings

00:40:57who appear to witnesses

00:40:58following unusual incidents,

00:41:01often to question them

00:41:02about the event

00:41:03and occasionally

00:41:04to threaten

00:41:05or terrify them

00:41:06into silence.

00:41:07The men in black

00:41:08rose to prominence

00:41:09in the 1960s

00:41:10during the wave

00:41:11of UFO and Mothman sightings

00:41:13that swept across the area.

00:41:16Clarksburg native

00:41:18Gray Barker wrote a book

00:41:19titled

00:41:19They Knew Too Much

00:41:20About Flying Saucers,

00:41:22which detailed encounters

00:41:24with black-suited individuals

00:41:25around the United States.

00:41:28Barker has since passed away,

00:41:30but his contributions

00:41:31to the UFO subject

00:41:32are numerous.

00:41:33So, the men in black phenomenon

00:41:35is what people explain

00:41:37happens after they've looked

00:41:39into either UFO sightings

00:41:41or they've specifically

00:41:42had some sort of encounter

00:41:44with a UFO.

00:41:45It's happened both

00:41:45with researchers

00:41:47who have apparently

00:41:49been digging too deeply

00:41:50or, like I said,

00:41:51people who have had

00:41:52an actual encounter.

00:41:54In the men in black,

00:41:55it's not always a black suit,

00:41:57but that's typically

00:41:58what comes to mind.

00:41:59Men show up in a dark suit,

00:42:01a black suit,

00:42:01and come to warn you

00:42:03that you need to stop

00:42:04talking about whatever it is

00:42:07related to UFOs

00:42:08that you were

00:42:09previously sharing.

00:42:10The men in black

00:42:11would often show up

00:42:12within a day or so

00:42:14of somebody seeing a UFO.

00:42:16And there's one example

00:42:18in particular

00:42:19that sticks out.

00:42:20The case of the family,

00:42:21I think Christensen

00:42:22was their last name.

00:42:24They had just moved

00:42:25into this house.

00:42:26Nobody knew,

00:42:28except their close family,

00:42:31that they had moved.

00:42:32They had no new telephone number.

00:42:35They had seen lights

00:42:37and lights in the skies.

00:42:38The next day,

00:42:40a strange person

00:42:41shows up on their doorstep.

00:42:43So this very strange man

00:42:45dressed in, like,

00:42:46very odd-fitting clothing,

00:42:48again, strange mannerisms

00:42:50in speech

00:42:51and sort of a sing-song quality

00:42:54to his voice.

00:42:55And he starts asking them

00:42:56numerous questions

00:42:58about,

00:42:59is this who you are?

00:43:02What have you seen?

00:43:04And then all of a sudden

00:43:05he starts dropping

00:43:06in other details

00:43:07about UFOs.

00:43:08Have you ever seen

00:43:09some of those?

00:43:11One of the children

00:43:12who was present

00:43:13at that time,

00:43:14she could see

00:43:15a green wire

00:43:18coming out of his sock

00:43:19and then going into his leg

00:43:22around a brown patch.

00:43:25The other thing

00:43:25that was very strange

00:43:27is that he said

00:43:27at the beginning

00:43:28when he came in

00:43:29and wanted access

00:43:30to their home,

00:43:31this is going to take

00:43:3240 minutes.

00:43:33And it did.

00:43:34It took exactly 40 minutes.

00:43:36When 40 minutes was over,

00:43:37he shut up all of his books

00:43:40and his briefcase

00:43:41and he left.

00:43:42Because of the strange nature

00:43:44of this,

00:43:45either the wife

00:43:46or one of the daughters

00:43:47decided they were going

00:43:48to watch him leave

00:43:50to see where was he going to go.

00:43:52He walked out

00:43:53down the driveway

00:43:54of the home.

00:43:55There's a fairly wooded area,

00:43:57a black,

00:43:5840-style Buick,

00:44:00pulls up in the driveway,

00:44:01lights off.

00:44:03The man,

00:44:04he jumps in the car,

00:44:06which is a classic

00:44:07man-in-black-style car,

00:44:09and it backs down the driveway

00:44:11with the lights still off

00:44:13and he's gone.

00:44:18Endric Kohl fits the description

00:44:20of a man-in-black perfectly.

00:44:22And also,

00:44:23after his encounter

00:44:24with Endric Kohl,

00:44:25the men in black

00:44:26began to visit

00:44:27Woodrow Durenberger

00:44:29at his farm,

00:44:30he thought they were

00:44:30the mafia.

00:44:32I mean,

00:44:32if you read any

00:44:33of John Keel's books,

00:44:35I think John Keel

00:44:35thought they were

00:44:36some strange race of people.

00:44:38He was actually

00:44:39frightened of them.

00:44:40And so was Durenberger,

00:44:42many people that encountered

00:44:43the men in black.

00:44:44Even though Kohl said,

00:44:46when he was talking

00:44:47to Woodrow Durenberger,

00:44:49we lend you no harm,

00:44:51we wish you only happiness,

00:44:54he would say that

00:44:55over and over to him

00:44:56to reassure him.

00:44:57But there's just something

00:44:58not right about

00:44:59the men in black.

00:45:00Some of the encounters

00:45:01that I've had with them

00:45:04as a young person

00:45:06and a child.

00:45:06Yeah, can you go into

00:45:08your own personal experiences

00:45:09with the men in black?

00:45:10With the men in black?

00:45:11Well, my friend Jeannie and I

00:45:14were up on the hill.

00:45:16We were playing up on the hill

00:45:17in the woods.

00:45:19We saw these two men

00:45:21dressed entirely in black

00:45:23and they were measuring

00:45:25the hillside.

00:45:26One looked perfectly ordinary

00:45:28except he was dressed

00:45:29all in black,

00:45:31Caucasian looking.

00:45:32The other man looked

00:45:34kind of Asian

00:45:35and then he had like

00:45:37dyed blonde hair.

00:45:39Now, nowadays,

00:45:40if you saw an Asian man

00:45:42with dyed blonde hair

00:45:43all dressed in black,

00:45:45that might not be unusual.

00:45:48It was back in 1966.

00:45:51We knew to be frightened

00:45:52of them and then we ran home.

00:45:56Later, my brother came home

00:45:58from school and said

00:46:00he and his friends

00:46:01were up on the hill

00:46:02and they found this big

00:46:04circular impression

00:46:06on the hillside,

00:46:08like either an impression

00:46:09of a UFO or a crop circle

00:46:11or something.

00:46:12Then, of course,

00:46:13years later,

00:46:14I would see the men in black

00:46:16in various ways.

00:46:19Men in black reports,

00:46:20have you guys taken

00:46:20any of those?

00:46:22It's just,

00:46:23it hasn't been necessarily

00:46:24a formal report,

00:46:26but just speaking

00:46:27with individuals

00:46:28that told us,

00:46:29you know,

00:46:30when they were a kid

00:46:31that they saw it,

00:46:32they saw a man in black

00:46:33or a man in black

00:46:34came to their house.

00:46:35We've had one report

00:46:37that was really intriguing

00:46:38to us that kind of lined up

00:46:40with some of the bizarre

00:46:42men in black

00:46:43where the translucent

00:46:44kind of skin

00:46:45and looked kind of weird

00:46:46and didn't know

00:46:47how to shake hands

00:46:48or work a ballpoint pen

00:46:49sort of deal,

00:46:50but that was just one account.

00:46:51Yeah, there's various theories,

00:46:52of course,

00:46:53about who the men in black

00:46:54really are

00:46:55or if they're even part

00:46:56of a qualifiable group.

00:46:59I think the most prosaic

00:47:01and simple explanation

00:47:02is that they are

00:47:04some type of government

00:47:07disinformation group

00:47:08that is seeking to,

00:47:12you know,

00:47:12if they are behind

00:47:13what people have seen,

00:47:15then they're following up

00:47:17on that sighting

00:47:18by further,

00:47:20you know,

00:47:20either trying to find out

00:47:23what they saw

00:47:23and get a description

00:47:26for their own data gathering

00:47:28purposes

00:47:28or if it's an entire

00:47:30sort of psychological operation

00:47:33to just chart what people,

00:47:35how they are reacting

00:47:37to the strange goings-on

00:47:40in their area

00:47:41and that they have experienced.

00:47:45Whether or not Indrid Cold

00:47:46and the men in black

00:47:47have any ties to the military

00:47:49is debatable,

00:47:50but all of this talk

00:47:51about them reminded me

00:47:52of a conversation I had

00:47:53with my friend Mark Muncy.

00:47:56Mark is a paranormal author

00:47:57and historian based in Florida

00:47:59who grew up in Appalachia

00:48:01and who had come across

00:48:02a story regarding Indrid Cold,

00:48:04which might help put together

00:48:06some pieces regarding

00:48:07the origins of the person

00:48:08or being behind the myth.

00:48:11So Mark,

00:48:12I have heard that

00:48:13you have uncovered

00:48:14a brand new Indrid Cold story

00:48:16when you were researching

00:48:18for one of your new books.

00:48:19Can you please share that with us?

00:48:21Indrid Cold is this

00:48:22interesting figure

00:48:23in UFO lore and research.

00:48:27There's some other sightings

00:48:28here and there

00:48:28throughout history.

00:48:29He supposedly turns up

00:48:30similar to Mothman.

00:48:32He kind of turns up

00:48:33in places right before

00:48:34bad things happen

00:48:35or just after bad things happen.

00:48:37And one of the incidents

00:48:39from Florida's past

00:48:40I was researching

00:48:41was known as

00:48:43the Crestview incident.

00:48:44This happened in 1967

00:48:46in April.

00:48:47This was a UFO incident.

00:48:49And a school,

00:48:50a bunch of students

00:48:52at a school

00:48:52saw an unusual aircraft.

00:48:55Tons of students see it.

00:48:57Teachers see it.

00:48:58There's no keeping kids in school.

00:49:00This thing's flying

00:49:01right outside.

00:49:01It's got little ones with it.

00:49:03It's a big classic saucer.

00:49:05Everybody's like,

00:49:06wow, that was crazy.

00:49:07But then the military show up

00:49:10and they start interrogating

00:49:12the students

00:49:13and the teachers

00:49:14as witnesses.

00:49:15The story in the paper

00:49:17says, unusual crafts I did

00:49:20was helicopters.

00:49:22And it disappears.

00:49:23It goes out of the papers.

00:49:24Nobody talks about it again

00:49:25for, you know, 50 years.

00:49:28Well, the advent of social media,

00:49:31suddenly these kids are like,

00:49:33wait a minute.

00:49:33It wasn't helicopters.

00:49:34I saw something weird.

00:49:35What did you see?

00:49:36And a lot of them start talking

00:49:38and start getting in touch

00:49:39with each other.

00:49:40They kind of form a group online.

00:49:42I reached out to that group

00:49:44when I was told about it.

00:49:45And when that group got me,

00:49:46I was like,

00:49:48okay, tell me about this.

00:49:49Tell me about this.

00:49:50And I started talking to each

00:49:51one that was willing to talk to me.

00:49:54I got to talk to one

00:49:55in particular.

00:49:56He had met with government agents,

00:50:00had come to his house

00:50:01to talk to him after the incident.

00:50:02His father had kept the names

00:50:05of the men

00:50:06who had asked him questions.

00:50:08He had the note

00:50:10that his dad,

00:50:11you know,

00:50:12basically journaled everybody.

00:50:13He had talked to

00:50:15a Lieutenant Smith.

00:50:17There was a Captain Sinclair

00:50:19from the Coast Guard.

00:50:21But then the third name

00:50:22just said,

00:50:23Government Man Cold.

00:50:28This would have been six months

00:50:30after Indrid's encounter

00:50:32with Derenberger.

00:50:33Is he working

00:50:34with the government now?

00:50:35And I'm like,

00:50:36do you remember the guy?

00:50:37And he said,

00:50:37yeah,

00:50:38he just kind of stood there

00:50:39weird suit

00:50:40and just smiled at me

00:50:41the whole time.

00:50:43I don't remember him

00:50:44asking any questions.

00:50:45Is Indrid Cold

00:50:46working with the government?

00:50:48You know,

00:50:49has he become

00:50:49the men in black,

00:50:51that we hear so much about?

00:50:59and seeing that piece of paper.

00:51:12with UFOs

00:51:13when we start talking

00:51:13about UFOs

00:51:14because it draws this,

00:51:16this image into people's heads

00:51:18of alien spacecraft.

00:51:20It's not necessarily

00:51:20what we're talking about.

00:51:21We're talking about

00:51:22an unidentified flying object

00:51:24or UAPs

00:51:25unidentified aerial phenomena

00:51:27which could be

00:51:29nocturnal lights,

00:51:30you know,

00:51:30and we don't know

00:51:31what that is.

00:51:32We have no clue

00:51:32what that is.

00:51:33These things have been

00:51:33happening around here

00:51:34for a very long time.

00:51:35I mean,

00:51:36you can talk to a lot of people

00:51:37and they'll tell you,

00:51:38you know,

00:51:38they've seen things,

00:51:39you know.

00:51:40My grandmother,

00:51:40back in the days

00:51:41when she was growing up,

00:51:42there was a bright light

00:51:43that came down

00:51:43and it sprawled out

00:51:44in the field.

00:51:45Well,

00:51:45I thought that was

00:51:46probably a meteorite.

00:51:47So, you know,

00:51:48as I got older,

00:51:49I went out and tried

00:51:49to find that,

00:51:50but no,

00:51:50never found it.

00:51:51I don't necessarily believe

00:51:52that we're dealing

00:51:54with a modern phenomena

00:51:55as some people believe.

00:52:09this was in Davis

00:52:09in West Virginia,

00:52:11South Wilderness

00:52:12in the Cane Wildlife Refuge.

00:52:14My wife and I

00:52:15were actually at there

00:52:15vacationing for the week

00:52:16and this was on June 30th

00:52:18on a Tuesday night

00:52:19over the course of this year.

00:52:21It's a really odd area

00:52:22but it's quite beautiful.

00:52:24But anyways,

00:52:24we wanted just to do

00:52:25some astronomy

00:52:26and we drove out there

00:52:28with a telescope

00:52:29and of course star maps

00:52:31and everything

00:52:31to do some stuff

00:52:37in the northwestern sky

00:52:38and we just saw

00:52:40this object

00:52:40just like a golden

00:52:42tan color object

00:52:44just popped into the sky.

00:52:45Of course,

00:52:46it went from the northwest

00:52:47to southwest

00:52:48and when it got

00:52:49towards the southeast,

00:52:50it kind of,

00:52:51it just jolted.

00:52:52It did this weird

00:52:53like adult thing

00:52:54and then it just disappeared

00:52:55and then a second later

00:52:56I was looking down

00:52:57actually looking at my wife

00:52:58and she looked up

00:52:59and yelled at me

00:53:01and said,

00:53:01hey, there's another one

00:53:02and then as she looked up

00:53:03another came across the sky

00:53:05and it's the same trajectory

00:53:07and it did the same thing

00:53:08and did a little jitter

00:53:09and just poof, poof,

00:53:10it was gone.

00:53:11How long did you see

00:53:12each thing

00:53:13when they blinked in

00:53:14and then by the time

00:53:14they left?

00:53:15Not even maybe two minutes

00:53:18and then it was a nice,

00:53:20it was too fast

00:53:21to be an airplane,

00:53:23too slow to be a satellite.

00:53:25This just shows

00:53:26the whole trajectory of it

00:53:28where we drove up

00:53:29from Fire Road 70

00:53:30from Davis

00:53:32and of course

00:53:32the trajectory

00:53:33of both the first

00:53:34and second object

00:53:35that went across the sky

00:53:36towards the Dolly Sade's wilderness.

00:53:39I believe, you know,

00:53:40that obviously

00:53:41there's something going on

00:53:42that we can't explain.

00:53:43Of course,

00:53:44with it being a UFO,

00:53:45I mean,

00:53:46it could be a military craft

00:53:47for all we know

00:53:48because we don't know

00:53:49everything that they have

00:53:50right now, obviously.

00:53:52But that's just basically

00:53:53the whole experience.

00:54:01in West Virginia,

00:54:03the more I felt like

00:54:04I wasn't seeing

00:54:10a number of fascinating sightings,

00:54:23at the possibilities

00:54:25to the sightings

00:54:26of UFOs in the state.

00:54:34belonging to a military craft.

00:54:41of the state's lore

00:54:42for decades.

00:54:44Rumors of underground bases

00:54:45dotting the Appalachian

00:54:47mountain range

00:54:47that runs through the state

00:54:49are nearly as widespread

00:54:50as sightings of Mothman

00:54:52or UFOs.

00:54:55The NSA,

00:54:57FBI,

00:54:57Army,

00:54:58and National Guard

00:54:59all operate

00:55:00out of the region,

00:55:01but those are

00:55:02the known locations.

00:55:03What else might be happening

00:55:05in the state

00:55:05that we're being kept

00:55:06in the proverbial dark about?

00:55:32highly anomalous.

00:55:37I was 13 years old.

00:55:39It was May of 1997.

00:55:41The sun had just went down.

00:55:44It was about 9.15,

00:55:46I would say.

00:55:50My mom,

00:55:51my younger brother,

00:55:52and I,

00:55:53we were on the front porch

00:55:54of our house.

00:55:56As we're looking out that way,

00:55:58we notice this bright light

00:55:59appear out in the distance,

00:56:03and we watch it,

00:56:04and thinking that's an airplane,

00:56:06we realize that it's moving

00:56:08way too slow,

00:56:10and we watch it

00:56:10for about 10 minutes

00:56:11before it gets close enough

00:56:13to us that we realize

00:56:14it's something really,

00:56:16really large.

00:56:21We're in so much shock,

00:56:22we just watch it

00:56:23as it approaches.

00:56:24And by the time

00:56:25it gets to us,

00:56:26we realize it's at least

00:56:28from where we're at

00:56:29to the end of the street.

00:56:32I'd say it was about

00:56:33300 feet wide,

00:56:34it was a triangle,

00:56:35and it might have been,

00:56:37at the most,

00:56:38100 feet up in the air,

00:56:40and moving maybe

00:56:41at five miles an hour.

00:56:43I mean, it was slow.

00:56:46And we just sat there,

00:56:48in awe,

00:56:48like looking at this thing

00:56:49in shock,

00:56:50and I mean,

00:56:51we were terrified.

00:56:54not a sound coming from it,

00:56:56nothing,

00:56:58just floating along.

00:57:00And we watch it

00:57:02like travel past,

00:57:03and we go around

00:57:04the side of the house,

00:57:05and we watch it

00:57:06go off into the horizon,

00:57:08and at that point,

00:57:08we're like,

00:57:09oh my goodness,

00:57:09we gotta get someone else

00:57:10to see this,

00:57:11so we go and get our dad,

00:57:11and he watches this light

00:57:12go off,

00:57:13and he's like,

00:57:14I'm not saying

00:57:15that you didn't see

00:57:17a UFO,

00:57:18I can't tell what it was,

00:57:21but don't tell anybody

00:57:23what you saw,

00:57:23because they will think

00:57:24you're crazy.

00:57:27It piqued an interest

00:57:28in me as to like,

00:57:30okay, what was this?

00:57:32I mean, for me,

00:57:33honestly,

00:57:34there's,

00:57:34no matter what the intent is,

00:57:36there's nothing that

00:57:37we can do,

00:57:38you know,

00:57:39so it's not something

00:57:40that I really think about

00:57:42or consider,

00:57:43because whether they're here

00:57:44just to, you know,

00:57:45observe us,

00:57:46or if they're planning

00:57:47an invasion,

00:57:48there's,

00:57:49and I know that's extreme,

00:57:51the whole invasion thing,

00:57:53but when we go to

00:57:55a foreign place

00:57:56here on Earth,

00:57:57it's,

00:57:58we're either there

00:57:58to observe,

00:57:59to actually engage

00:58:01the civilization,

00:58:02and take samples,

00:58:03and collect data,

00:58:05or we're there

00:58:06to just completely

00:58:07take it over,

00:58:09there was a neighbor

00:58:11that lived beside of us,

00:58:14and she swore

00:58:17that there is

00:58:18a government test facility

00:58:20for aircraft.

00:58:28of where we're at,

00:58:30a town called Elkins.

00:58:34would have been that area.

01:03:12and seen this thing

01:03:17pictures of it

01:03:19and what's strange

01:03:20is Green Bank

01:03:20is my understanding

01:03:22is a no-fly zone.

01:03:23So if these

01:03:24are near Green Bank

01:03:25they shouldn't

01:03:26have been there.

01:03:26Even if they were

01:03:27drones they shouldn't

01:03:27have been there.

01:03:28So I got a hold

01:03:29of Ron Lanham

01:03:31perplexed by him

01:03:32and he took him

01:03:33and done the

01:03:34enhancements

01:03:38it's something

01:03:39other than like

01:03:40a bird in the sky.

01:04:20this orange light

01:04:23one horizon

01:04:24and it just moves

01:04:25and it'll blink

01:04:25and then moves

01:04:26and it'll blink

01:04:27and it wasn't

01:04:27moving steady

01:04:28it just moved to a

01:04:29spot and blink

01:04:30and then it got so

01:04:31so far over

01:04:32and it blinked

01:04:34and went out

01:04:34and then I could

01:04:36see a blink

01:04:37again and it shot

01:04:37like in an angle

01:04:38and started

01:04:39blinking again

01:04:40and moved over

01:04:41again and then

01:04:42eventually just

01:04:43went off.

01:05:47It was actually laying in my van, and it was right over here along this side, in this

01:05:56You feel like it was maybe conventional?

01:06:00The way it moved, I mean, I couldn't say it was a UFO, mainly because I couldn't see

01:06:07it, but all I saw was the light.

01:06:08But it moved, as it moved forward, it stopped blinking, and then it seemed like it shot

01:06:15in the Z pattern, shot down in an angle, started blinking again, and then kept on going so

01:06:21far this way, and that was it.

01:06:23I could have lost it and didn't see it anymore.

01:06:56All right, so, what are we at?

01:06:59So, you know, let's tell them what you spotted first, and I actually was able to pick it up, too.

01:07:04Yeah, so, right over in that area, going pretty, like, pretty fast, we saw a consistent bluish light going pretty

01:07:15quickly, and it disappeared.

01:07:17It disappeared, and then it came back and disappeared.

01:07:21Now it's gone.

01:07:22Whoa, I've never seen anything move that quickly through the sky.

01:07:26It was actually really far away.

01:07:28That's what's impressive is because the second you said it, I actually, I locked eyes on it, and it was

01:07:34so far, but it was smooth and going extremely fast.

01:07:38I mean, something to go, I mean, where that plane is, look how far it's been going and going in

01:07:46And comparing the speed of the plane to what it was doing was just significantly quicker.

01:09:33The objects or lights we saw that night are unidentifiable.

01:09:37Could they be known aircraft?

01:09:39Sure, maybe.

01:09:42But they bear startling similarities to what Dave and Les saw in the same area, right down

01:09:48to the fact that they disappeared without a trace.

01:09:52The camera didn't quite do justice to the low altitudes they seemed to be flying at, and

01:09:57against a sky full of bright stars, you almost had to be there to really get the full effect.

01:10:02Which, I now realize, is something that witnesses say to me all the time.

01:10:07You had to be there to understand it.

01:10:10So, I've finally seen something that I can't identify.

01:10:15I'm still trying to make sense of where it came from, or what it was.

01:10:20Did it come from one of those rumored military bases, or is it simply a test aircraft running

01:10:26maneuvers?

01:10:27If it's not of this earth, then what is it doing here?

01:10:31Is there something in this particular area drawing it in?

01:10:36As far as a defining characteristic of UFOs in West Virginia, I think the most consistent

01:10:43seems to be a light or a flying disc of some sort that will often be spotted in places where

01:10:52there has been a history of mining.

01:10:55There's a correlation, it would seem, between those two things, even to the degree that in

01:11:00many cases, people report seeing what appears to them to be a physical craft suddenly dive

01:11:06into the ground without an explosion.

01:11:09And that's so often accompanied by some type of mine or location that has to do with that industry.

01:11:19Are you aware of any other sightings in association with coal mines?

01:11:24The coal mine areas, yeah. I mean, there's even one that come from the Kanawha area, the valley,

01:11:30where, is it 2012, I believe it was, or 2013, where several people say they saw these large

01:11:38black triangles, like three in a row, cross over this coal mine.

01:11:41Have you taken many or any reports? Have you heard of any reports? It doesn't matter if you've

01:11:48taken it or not. I'm just asking general that tie together, uh, UFO sightings and coal mines.

01:11:56We do have mines and we do have, uh, you know, episodes of high strangeness that do occur around

01:12:01these things. So if there's an episode of high strangeness, then sometimes related to UFOs,

01:12:06it's related to other things too. But, you know, you have to look at those.

01:12:10The reports that we've all taken were actually in correlation with the power plants in the chemical valley.

01:12:15Oh, you're talking about... I'm talking about the big... You're talking about nukes. Yeah,

01:12:19that's a whole different story. That's not necessarily the power plants. Yeah, that's not

01:12:22power plants. That's, that's way more impressive. But we, recently, we had a report that came in,

01:12:28uh, it's about three weeks old now at this point, where a St. Albans gentleman had a visual sighting,

01:12:35daylight sighting, and it was flying through the chemical valley. He said the object looked like it was a,

01:12:41uh, silver kind of mirror-y finish, and it was flying alongside an Osprey. But he said that this

01:12:48Osprey didn't have a, uh, stereotypical paint job that you would expect from a military vehicle. And then,

01:12:57there was the single fighter jet that he said came on blaring up the valley. Uh, and whenever the two

01:13:05objects kind of came in close proximity, that the shining, unidentified object blinked out and went

01:13:11straight up into the atmosphere. And that would have been roughly near the John Amos power plant.

01:13:18Instead of calling it the Kenora River Valley, they called it the Chemical River Valley or the

01:13:21Chemical Valley. West Virginia and the, that's, that's, the Kenora River area was home to all of these

01:13:30weapons manufacturing plants. Nitro is named after, you know, their production of TNT and explosives for

01:13:36the war effort. And, you know, there were sightings in St. Albans and St. Albans is right across the river

01:13:42from nitro. So these things could have been in nitro. So what you're saying is we could have basically the

01:13:48exact same thing that they're reporting at these nuclear bases and whatnot, uh, today that we could be

01:13:54dealing with the same thing that they were actually looking at maybe the components rather than the

01:13:59actual nuclear side of it. Right. Because at that point they were all separate components and each,

01:14:05each area was developing their own portion.

01:14:33a little bit of a little bit of a little bit.

01:15:02We're about, I don't know exactly, we're about a mile from Fishhack.

01:15:54We went in mines up there, you know, 150-year-old mines.

01:15:59It didn't come from the ground, it came from the air.

01:17:28and let me know what you think. But it looks like these locations that we have been talking about

01:17:35all correlate with coal mines. I mean, within miles or minutes in some instances.

01:17:50I mean, there's a lot of abandoned mines in West Virginia, deep mines, some that go back centuries.

01:17:55And a lot of active mines that are even close to power stations in general.

01:18:01So I don't know if maybe power stations themselves lend something as an energy source for something like this.

01:18:10And maybe that's why. Maybe some of these mines are someplace that something can hide

01:18:14and be developed by something otherworldly or something right here.

01:18:19The interesting thing is West Virginia is a heavily mined state, right? It's known for coal mines.

01:18:25The western part of the state is not heavily mined.

01:18:29And yet, you've got this preponderance of reports around Point Pleasant in the 1960s.

01:18:36Point Pleasant is a mined location in an area that is not known for mining.

01:18:43If you extrapolate that out, the same thing holds true for Sutton and Flatwoods,

01:18:48where all of a sudden there's a couple of mines, and those are places known for siting.

01:18:52So it's not necessarily the fact that there's sitings happening in heavily mined areas.

01:18:56It seems like the big thing is the fact that there's sitings happening in places that are not known for

01:19:01mining,

01:19:01where there happen to be mines.

01:19:02Right. Even many, many years ago.

01:19:04Now, Les, we went to Dolly Sods with you.

01:19:08Tell me about that area in relation to the theory we're kind of going through.

01:19:12It's largely a limestone area.

01:19:16The majority of what would be considered as a mine area, there are mines.

01:19:22You know, like Buffalo Coal used to be there.

01:19:24There is a Matiki mine, and they all feed the Mountain Storm power plant.

01:19:29It's just, you know, just a handful of miles away from Dolly Sods.

01:19:33So we pretty much haven't come across a siting that does not correlate with an energy source.

01:19:39Okay, what about the idea, guys, of maybe these things just strictly taking out the power plants and the coal

01:19:46mines?

01:19:47These things coming directly in and out of the earth.

01:19:51But there has been sightings in this area, you know, just in Elkins or like the Norton area.

01:19:58I've had a few sightings from there, whether it was a triangle object or a disc.

01:20:03This local UFO researcher named Bob Keats, who wrote a book all about West Virginia, compiling his West Virginia cases.

01:20:10The theory that you're presenting was put forth by him as well.

01:20:14And one thing that he pointed out was that there were a large number of sightings in that book, historical

01:20:19sightings, older sightings.

01:20:21Where people did see objects diving into or coming out of the earth.

01:20:27I suppose the easier question, not with an answer, though, is could they be pulling energy from these sources?

01:20:35What is the purpose?

01:20:37It certainly kind of nods in that direction at the very least.

01:20:41Yeah.

01:20:41Are they leeching energy from these places?

01:20:44Are they literally coming out of the earth?

01:20:45There's books from the 1950s and 60s where people posited the idea that UFOs are coming from a hollow earth.

01:21:00So basically, after everything that we've gone through, it still doesn't tell us much of anything, for sure.

01:21:07Just gives us more questions.

01:21:09But, at least for our part of it, especially in West Virginia, it is a model that we can build

01:21:15on.

01:21:30The dark sky of West Virginia holds a lot of secrets.

01:21:36Apparently, so do its mountains and rivers, its forests, and its hills and hollers.

01:21:53Maybe it's all connected.

01:21:55Maybe there are extraterrestrial beings coming from the stars to secretly mine our planet.

01:22:01Or maybe it's our own, or even a foreign military testing aircraft, in our backyard.

01:22:07Maybe the visitors are coming from inside the earth itself.
