00:00This was so great. I went to go use the restroom, and I come back, and sitting on the couch
00:03is Caleb Durbin and Anthony Sigler,
00:06and Anthony and Ted Johnson are talking, getting jacked, like lifting weights, and they're like, you lift four plates?
00:12Yeah, man, lifting four plates. I want to jump into that conversation, but as you can tell, I got nothing
00:16to add.
00:17I had a feeling that these guys, we were of like mind, so I brought it up, and they wanted
00:22to continue the conversation, which I appreciate.
00:25I'm always impressed. These guys, the long season they have, and they work so hard in the offseason to get
00:31themselves at the peak performance,
00:33and it's hard to maintain that throughout a long season, so we were just talking about the schedule and that
00:38stuff,
00:39but it led to other fun conversations about training and working out.
00:42We've come a long way in understanding how exercise and training can benefit you as an athlete,
00:48so very nice to meet these guys for the first time. Cool dudes.
00:51Yeah, can you get two-jacked, Anthony, in baseball? Is that a bad thing to be two-jacked?
00:55I don't know. I feel like you've got to ask Derbs.
00:58He's obviously not that worried about it.
01:00Look at his physique. It's a lot better than mine, but I think he works on the up here more
01:06than his arms and lower body.
01:08It seems like every lift I do, somehow my traps get a workout in. I'm not sure how, but you'll
01:13have to talk to JD about that one.
01:15It's so funny because baseball players are all – they run the gamut.
01:19Baseball players can either be really tough or in shape, but then you can get a pitcher who gets out
01:23there
01:24who looks like Grimace and will just kill you out there. It's really all over the map, isn't it?
01:29It is. I feel like it is. It's a lot of types of physiques, but we're all athletic at the
01:36end of the day,
01:36and we do our job really well, I feel like.
01:39We do.
01:39All right, we've got to talk, Caleb, about – this was such a great story this season with you.
01:44So the beginning of the season, for a lot of people, didn't start off the way that everyone wanted it
01:48to,
01:48and you were in a little bit of a slump.
01:49But then a story came out where you visited a man by the name of Lorenzo here in town, the
01:54batting guru.
01:55People say that he's like the Yoda of hitting.
01:57And almost immediately afterwards, you go on this tear.
02:02Did something happen there, or was it just a coincidence,
02:05or did this Lorenzo kind of teach you something that maybe you didn't see?
02:10I think there's a lot that goes into making the adjustments you need to make during the season.
02:16I think one thing he did help me with was just keeping my hands tighter to my body
02:20and staying inside the ball and keeping my direction to the middle of the field.
02:24So it kind of opened up the entire field, which is – that's fundamental hitting.
02:28And I kind of got away from it a little bit, whether it was trying to do too much
02:32or trying to hit it over the monster every time, you know, I'm not positive.
02:36It took me a while to get out of it.
02:38But, yeah, he just kind of sat me down and was like, hey, this is what you need to get
02:42better at.
02:43This is what I think I could help you with.
02:44And we just went to work.
02:48Took way more swings than I've ever taken this year, you know, away from the field,
02:51which, you know, you got to do what you got to do.
02:53So it ended up working out and, you know, obviously feeling a lot better.
02:56How did you find this guy?
02:57How did you find him?
02:59Norvayes, Carlos Norvayes.
03:00It's his hitting guy.
03:02So he reached out to Carlos, actually, and said, hey, I want to work with Durbin.
03:07I think I can help him.
03:08And, you know, the rest is kind of history.
03:10I can't imagine, mentally, what you guys are thinking about when it comes to a swing.
03:14You know, so I'm going to try and – forgive me if I don't know what the hell I'm talking
03:18about.
03:18So when I take golf lessons, it's like I can hear somebody give me a thought and an idea,
03:23and it just doesn't feel right.
03:25And then someone says something in a way in which it all kind of makes sense,
03:28and I just, boom, I get it.
03:30Is that the same way maybe with hitting?
03:32If you hear explained to you a certain way that all kind of just comes in focus,
03:37does it work that way?
03:38Yeah, it's really incredible.
03:39I think if you haven't, you know, played the game at, you know, a high level,
03:44you might not realize how fine of a line it is between being bad and being really good.
03:50I get it.
03:50It's like you said, it's something clicking in your head,
03:53and obviously you've got to make the physical adjustments,
03:57but even just the mental approach to the game is a whole other thing that, you know,
04:01just being settled into a new city finally, you know, all that kind of goes into play too.
04:05And, Anthony, I feel like when you came, you were the vibes guy right away.
04:09How's the vibe now, and did you have to work with these guys to get it to where you wanted
04:12it?
04:13Oh, no, I feel like it was always there.
04:15Don't be humble.
04:16I think it's always been there.
04:21I mean, baseball is a long season, like they both said.
04:24It takes time.
04:26I think definitely being around a bunch of new guys kind of takes a little bit time to be,
04:32like, get close to everybody and know how everybody works mentally, physically,
04:36at the field or away from the field.
04:38But, I mean, I don't think it's just one person because it's, I mean,
04:44it's all nine and then more on the bench that need to be together.
04:48But there's one Tony Seagulls, right?
04:50You know?
04:52Yeah, but there's also one Durbinator.
04:54That's true.
04:54Those are two great nicknames right there.
04:56That's it.
04:56How are you guys?
04:57Just your experience.
04:58You're both new to Boston.
05:00Your feelings on playing here.
05:03I know it wasn't easy, you know, early in the season, winning games here at Fenway.
05:07Now it's totally different.
05:08It just feels like you guys are more comfortable.
05:11What's your thoughts of just the fan base here and playing in Boston?
05:14Yeah, I think once we knew we were going to turn it around,
05:17we felt like the fans were going to rally behind us.
05:20And a game like last night where it's just electric, it's sold out every single night.
05:24And it was early in the season, too, when we weren't playing too well.
05:27So, you know, credit to the fans for that.
05:29But definitely don't want to start off slow here in this city.
05:33But, you know, we were where we're at, and we were able to kind of turn it around in a
05:38much better spot now.
05:40You know, in a season of, like, you know, some great things that have happened,
05:42there is one dumb storyline that I'm obsessed with,
05:45and that is that Chad Tracy still has the interim tag on his name.
05:48Do you believe that that should be gone from Chad Tracy's title?
05:53I mean, I think everybody would love it for it to be just, like, away from where it is now.
06:00I mean, I think he's done a great job with us.
06:04He knows what we need to do.
06:06He knows how our bodies feel consistently, I feel like.
06:10And so for him to adjust schedules and just being able to talk to us, slow everybody down is huge.
06:17I mean, so I think it would be an honor for him just to take that away
06:23and just give him that, like, manager title.
06:29But, I mean, he's done a great job.
06:30I love him.
06:32I think I can speak for everybody in that clubhouse that he's done a wonderful job of handling the situation
06:39and hasn't made it too big, and he's just helping us just, like, really bring us together and just win.
06:46Speaking of winning, you guys had a little taste of the playoffs last year.
06:48What's the one thing, like, you learned from that run that you can take and bring to this team
06:53that you guys got a taste of?
06:54Yeah, I mean, it's a little bit different of a ball game once you get to playoffs.
06:58It's like every pitch is the last pitch of the ninth inning, you know, from the first pitch.
07:02So just kind of having that experience and settling into it from game one, rather, it takes.
07:09For me, it really took, you know, game three of the divisional round is when it kind of settled in.
07:16Those first couple games, you know, your heart's racing.
07:18It feels like you're debuting all over again.
07:20So having that experience is huge.
07:23Obviously, we'll go even further this year with the squad we got here.
07:27But, I mean, we're just excited for it.
07:29Can I ask you, there is the report times ever since, I guess, you guys came in from Colorado late
07:36and we're here for the Yankees series.
07:38And I know you guys even made shirts about, like, you know, like the late arrival crew or something.
07:43Show and go.
07:43Show and go, yeah.
07:44Ever since then, I've heard reports that your report time is later now, like, to be at the park.
07:50Is that for a reason or is that superstition because ever since that happened, you guys kind of took off?
07:56I don't think it's really superstition.
07:59I think it's just, like I said, Trace knows how our body feels.
08:03He has a great feel of the whole team.
08:07And, I mean, whether you want to come in early, because you can still get that option to come in
08:11early, get your work in.
08:13Yeah.
08:13But, I mean, you also have the option to come in later.
08:16I think it definitely helps because we're baseball players.
08:19It's a long season.
08:20Yeah.
08:20And then I think that extra time just gives us time to, if we got family in town, chop it
08:26up with them.
08:26We got friends in town, chill with them.
08:29Just, it gives us stuff outside of baseball to do a little bit more time instead of having to be
08:34rushed, especially in the morning.
08:36And then, like, maybe, like, that 15-inning game that we had.
08:40Or, no, it was an 11-inning?
08:41Like, 13.
08:4213-inning game like we had with the White Sox.
08:45I mean, that late report time is huge.
08:47So, it just gives us a little bit more time to recover and all that.
08:49But, yeah, I don't think it's superstition.
08:52I mean, he just knows how our bodies are and how mentally draining, like, every game is.
08:57Does somebody wash that Wally head?
08:59Because does it smell awful when you put that thing on?
09:02You think it would smell worse, honestly.
09:04Yeah, they must wash it.
09:06Yeah, they have to wash it.
09:07It doesn't smell nearly as bad as it should, especially with this guy putting it on.
09:10I mean, you've got Bowser putting it on.
09:12Yeah.
09:13I mean, it smells way too good for him not to clean it.
09:17Personally, I'm not, like, when I put it on, I'm not sniffing it and smelling it all.
09:20So, I guess Derv's, I guess that's what Derv's does.
09:23I'm the only one.
09:24Oh, you admit it, you are.
09:25I mean, it's a bunch of sweaty guys running around the face.
09:27Put that thing on.
09:28You're just wiping the sweat all over it.
09:30I don't know.
09:30Sitting at home, I'm just like, that thing must smell awful.
09:33And was Raphael a piss that you stole his ice in the veins move?
09:36Or was it that?
09:39He didn't know what to do.
09:40He didn't bring it up.
09:40I don't even remember doing it.
09:42He did the homer.
09:44I was like, what do I do now?
09:45He just panicked and just did that.
09:47Yeah.
09:48Do I clap?
09:49What do I do now?
09:51Well, I'm glad you put that out there, what that meant, because it could, you know, for
09:54some people, it means something totally different.
09:56No, no.
09:56Ice debate.
09:56Ice water.
09:57I'm getting high in it with that.
09:58I don't know.
09:59I mean, you know.
09:59Just getting the IV, hydration IV.
10:01There you go.
10:02It's like, yeah.
10:03There you go.
10:04But this is so cool, because I was telling Chad this earlier.
10:08The Red Sox put their money where their mouth is when it comes to the Jimmy Fund.
10:10You guys all show up.
10:12You do the interviews.
10:13You know, the charity is obviously something that's important to you guys.
10:16So when you're here doing something like this, like, this is a big part of the culture
10:19of the team.
10:19And I know that you guys are new to, but, you know, when you see this and how big this
10:24whole event is, you know, what does that say to the people, like, what you think about
10:28the people of Boston and how they're able to, like, donate $3.5 million so far to this?
10:32Yeah, it's everything.
10:33I think being on the outside for, you know, my whole life and now being a part of it,
10:38from the outside looking in, you see how big of an influence the Red Sox organization has
10:44within the Boston community.
10:45And that's, I think, a big reason why the fans rally around the team so much is, you
10:50know, the Red Sox mean so much to the city and to the kids that are going through tough
10:55times.
10:55It's, you know, everything for them, too.
10:57So to now be a part of it and see it firsthand is super cool.
11:01Yeah.
11:01Not only the kids, but the families, too.
11:04I mean, it speaks volumes to, like, I mean, you see it with when we have games here sold
11:09out.
11:09Yeah.
11:09Like, it's fun.
11:10And then it's not surprising that everybody in Boston is just supporting.
11:15It's amazing to see.
11:18It's amazing to now be a part of, like you said, it's our first year doing this.
11:22So it's pretty incredible just to have how everybody just kind of rallies around everybody
11:27and is all in support of just wanting to help the kids, the families.
11:32And they have no idea how much this means to them and everybody else.
11:35And, you know, it's not only do we be able to come here and help raise some money, but
11:38you're able to talk lifting weights, crushing plates with Ted Johnson over here.
11:42I'm going to get some more pointers when we get off the air.
11:45But I admire the hell out of these guys.
11:47They kind of, they got to keep themselves sharp throughout this season when they don't
11:51have a lot of time to do it.
11:52So keep it up, boys.
11:54And I'm going to be one of your biggest fans now that we met.
11:57So very nice to meet you all.
11:59Great to meet you.
11:59Let's get another blowout, baby.
12:01That was fun last night.
12:01That was a good time, man.
12:02Let's do it again.
12:03Yes, sir.
