HRW says Russian paramilitaries killed 9 civilians in Mali

The Sahel country has been wracked since 2012 by a serious security crisis, notably fuelled by violence from jihadists allied to Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State group, along with criminal gangs and armed separatists.

00:01Human Rights Watch says Russian paramilitaries supporting Mali's military killed nine civilians,
00:07including four children, during an operation last month.
00:11According to the right group, more than 100 fighters from Russia's Africa Corps,
00:17accompanied by Malian soldiers, entered the village of Bumburi in central Mali's Mopti region on July 10.
00:24Human Rights Watch says the fighters rounded up around 80 men and boys,
00:28questioned them over alleged links to jihadists and beat some of those detained.
00:33The group alleges that six civilians were shot while trying to flee, while three others were detained and executed.
00:41Residents later recovered nine bodies, including those of four children aged between six and 17.
00:48The alleged killings come as Mali's military-led government relies increasingly on Russian support in its fight against armed groups.
