00:02Former Meta Engineering Director Arturo Bejar testified Wednesday that CEO Mark Zuckerberg
00:07fostered a culture that treated child safety as secondary to growth and engagement on Facebook
00:14and Instagram, according to Reuters. 29 states accused Meta of harming young users and improperly
00:21collecting children's data in a six-week trial that could result in penalties and changes to
00:26Facebook and Instagram. Bejar told jurors that Zuckerberg was closely involved in decision
00:32making and said product changes happened only when Zuckerberg made them a priority.
00:37He disputed Zuckerberg's 2021 claims that Meta used research to improve safety, saying
00:42you just cannot trust Mark Zuckerberg with kids. Bejar also testified that Meta prioritized
00:49engagement and profit over safety and had technology to flag potentially millions of
00:53users suspected to be under 13. He said the company instead followed a don't-ask-don't-tell
00:59approach because removing those users could hurt long-term profits.
