00:05if you were, and actually I don't need to say if, this is from the fans.
00:1049er fans, how many teams, and you can sort of look at this
00:15in terms of their current roster and situation,
00:18in other words, chances to win a Super Bowl this year,
00:22but also you can broaden it if you want.
00:24Like, for instance, a Rams conversation might be,
00:27yeah, they've got the best roster, but they've also got a quarterback
00:30who's probably about to retire.
00:32Yep.
00:33So the whole picture of the organization,
00:38about how many do you think you would trade places with as a 49er fan?
00:43And this would be, you know, you give up your coach,
00:46you give up your quarterback, you give it all up basically, right?
00:49Yeah.
00:49Just change the jersey.
00:50I would say the number is roughly six, six or seven other teams
00:55that I would look at and say, yeah, I'd go ahead and make the switch.
00:57It's not like an automatic no-brainer.
01:00And I think the Rams are one, and they're interesting
01:03because they're the favorites to win it this year.
01:06They've got an unbelievable offense and a defense
01:09that's probably a little bit better, and they've got a great head coach.
01:13So even though the long-term prognosis for them is not great
01:17because you've got, you know, Aaron Donald, if he comes back,
01:20is older, and Miles Garrett, and Matthew Stafford, you mentioned.
01:24Puka Nakua may have some games that he misses
01:26based on his off-season, off-field stuff,
01:30but the Rams would be one that I would switch with for sure.

01:34I go with the Rams.
01:36I would go with Buffalo because I think their quarterback
01:40is the best quarterback in football, and he's a singular force.
01:45Similarly, I would switch with Kansas City
01:47because you've got Andy and Patrick Mahomes,
01:49and Mahomes is supposed to be ready for week one,
01:52and I think when he gets totally healthy,
01:55he still is an amazing quarterback.
01:56Kansas City's an interesting one, though,
01:58because I would bet just by the law of averages,
02:01whatever Kansas City has achieved,
02:03much more of it's in the rearview mirror
02:06than out the front window.

02:09I mean, I'm not saying they couldn't win another one,
02:12but just by law of averages,
02:14if you do want to dive deep on some metrics
02:17around Patrick Mahomes,
02:19there has been already a slight but steady decline
02:24in some of the things he's doing.
02:26For instance, Grandy shared that stat page with us earlier today.
02:31The point they were trying to make
02:33is that quarterback sacks are not just about the offensive line,
02:36they're also about the quarterback
02:37and how great quarterbacks do a great job of avoiding sacks,
02:42and Mahomes has clearly been one of them,
02:44but his numbers are getting worse each year right now.
02:47His numbers are getting worse,
02:49and now, for the first time in his career,
02:51he's going to be coming back from major injury,
02:54and I would imagine that can't help his mobility
02:57and avoiding sacks and things like that.
03:00So, before we go further on this conversation,
03:03listen to this one.
03:04This is from Speakeasy today with Ocho, Emmanuel Ocho.
03:08Listen to what he says about the Niners and the conference.
03:11If you're the Niners, who's better than you?
03:13The Seattle Seahawks?
03:14But on paper, the Seahawks should not be better.
03:17Seahawks got some dogs and are a more complete team,
03:19and they got younger players that are healthier
03:20and young, hungry dogs run faster.
03:23But, like, on paper, the Niners should be looking at the NFC
03:27and saying,
03:28this is as weak of an NFC
03:31as we've seen since we've been legit.
03:34NFC championship, at minimum, should be the goal.
03:36Like, when you think about the Niners,
03:38the NFC teams that you would suggest
03:40are just better than them,
03:43clearly on paper.
03:45Clearly.
03:45The Rams.
03:47And that's on paper, by the way.
03:49In real life, during the regular season,
03:50the Niners would be having a Rams number.
03:52But on paper, the Rams.
03:54Outside of that,
03:55I could look at every team and be like,
03:57they got weaknesses like we got weaknesses.
03:59If I'm the San Francisco 49ers,
04:00and mind you,
04:01I beat the Eagles last year,
04:03and I was worse.
04:04And they were better.
04:06Imagine how much better I should be
04:07than the Eagles this year.
04:08If I'm the Niners,
04:09that's my thought process.
04:10There's one part of what he's saying
04:12I really agree with.
04:13There's one part I vehemently disagree with.
04:17But how does that grab you
04:19with regard to the situation
04:21facing the Niners this year?
04:22I think that if you talk about on paper,
04:25yeah, the Rams is an easy answer.
04:27But then you look at the reality of the sport
04:30not being played on paper,
04:31and you look at certain situations
04:33that you'll have to face,
04:34not only with the schedule nuance,
04:36but some of the teams
04:37that you're going to go up against this year.
04:39And you do face the AFC West
04:41as your crossover,
04:42which is very difficult.
04:43Good division.
04:44And you've got the Chargers,
04:45the Chiefs,
04:46and your new favorite,
04:47Mendoza and the Raiders.
04:48And so I do think
04:50that becomes difficult schedule-wise.
04:52And you face Seattle
04:53when they're coming off their bye.
04:55And I won't get this bogged down
04:56into schedule,
04:57but you look at the Niners,
04:59and yeah,
04:59they're one of the teams
05:00in that next group.
05:01I would put Green Bay in there.
05:03I think that Dallas
05:04is going to be improved,
05:05and Philadelphia,
05:07for all of their warts
05:08and their changes this offseason,
05:10they tend to perennially be
05:12a team that's right in the mix.
05:14I'll say this.
05:15I'm going to buy what he's saying
05:17with regard to the idea
05:18that the Niners
05:19should not really be
05:21afraid of anyone,
05:22roster-wise.
05:23I know the fan base
05:24doesn't really look at it that way,
05:26but that's the way fan bases operate.
05:28They tend to look at the weaknesses
05:29of their team
05:30and woe is us
05:31and I'm sure it'll go bad
05:33and the whole mopey-donkey thing
05:35that so many fans tend to do.
05:38I'll acknowledge the Rams
05:39are a better roster,
05:42and the Seahawks are a Super Bowl champ,
05:45and the Niners,
05:46they've got to go out
05:47and prove some things
05:48against those two teams.
05:49But I think that they're right there,
05:52again, on paper,
05:53but there's no reason to think
05:55that they're not going to be
05:56right in the mix
05:57the same way they were last year
05:58with those teams.

06:01with what Acho said,
06:02and I can't believe he said it,
06:05what on earth are we talking about
06:07with this is the weakest
06:08the NFC has been
06:11in recent memory
06:13of Kyle Shanahan
06:15being with the Niners in this era?
06:17I don't see the NFC
06:19as weak at all.
06:21In fact,
06:22I see it as probably
06:24as deep as I can ever remember
06:27minus one division.
06:29Sure,
06:30the NFC South,
06:31they exist,
06:32but they've existed
06:32in their current form
06:33for a while now.
06:35It's four teams
06:36that are having
06:37a little cat fight
06:38with each other
06:38trying to get to nine wins,
06:40and then someone
06:41will pop out the other side,
06:43host a playoff game,
06:44and lose it,
06:44and go home.
06:46But of the other 12 teams
06:48in the NFC,
06:49how many of them
06:50can you just flick
06:52and dismiss?
06:53I would argue
06:54there's only one
06:56that I feel like
06:57I can truly go
06:58get out of here,
07:00and that's the Arizona Cardinals.
07:02And then there's two others
07:04where I'm like,
07:06you're probably not going to be
07:09really in this conversation,
07:11but you could surprise us,
07:14and that's the Giants
07:15and the Vikings.
07:16I think the Giants
07:17are well coached now.
07:18There's going to be
07:19some credibility there,
07:20but they've got to
07:20figure that all out,
07:21and the Vikings
07:22are going through
07:23whatever they're doing
07:24quarterback-wise.
07:25I think you could throw in
07:26Atlanta and New Orleans
07:27as well.
07:28No, I already eliminated
07:30the entire NFC South.

07:32So all four,
07:32although one of them
07:33will make the playoffs.

07:34They basically have to.
07:36I said of the other 12 teams,

07:38eliminate is the Cardinals.

07:41where I'm like,
07:42eh, but nine of those
07:43other 12 teams,
07:45I see as highly dangerous.
07:47I think that they're
07:48legitimate, competent teams,
07:50and I think for me,
07:51when you want to compare
07:52the two conferences,
07:53you could look at the bottom
07:55and the bottom of the AFC
07:56is to me far and away
07:58worse than the bottom
07:59of the NFC.

08:01you know, Miami
08:02and the Jets,
08:04the Browns,
08:05and the Raiders
08:06still have a lot to show me
08:07before I put them
08:08in the real contender class.

08:12the Titans are another one.

08:14are among the worst
08:15eight teams,
08:15I would say,
08:16in football.
08:17So if you want to just
08:19discard teams
08:20based on the fact
08:21that you don't think
08:22that they're going to be
08:22very good,
08:23I have five of those teams
08:24being from the AFC.
08:25So I think the AFC
08:27is weaker
08:28top to bottom
08:29than the NFC is.

08:33the three divisions
08:34we talk about
08:34in the NFC,

08:36I'm looking
08:38at three divisions
08:40where in each of them,
08:41I can truly say,

08:48win this division.

08:50believe that about Washington,

09:12how you can phrase that
09:13as a weak NFC
09:15and certainly not phrase it
09:17as the weakest
09:18the NFC has been
09:19in Kyle Shanahan's
09:20time with the Niners.

09:24the divisions,
09:25I'm looking at the
09:26DraftKings odds
09:27to win the NFC North
09:29and there's not much
09:30separating first from fourth.

09:33a five to one chance
09:34to win the NFC North.
09:36It goes Detroit
09:37narrowly ahead of Green Bay
09:39and then ahead of Chicago
09:40and same thing
09:41with the NFC South
09:43which I know
09:43we threw that one away

09:45is up for grabs
09:46and even the NFC East
09:47it's Philly
09:48then Dallas
09:49and then a big gap
09:50to Washington
09:51and the Giants
09:51but I don't see
09:53other than Arizona
09:54and they're sitting here
09:55at plus 10,000
09:56to win the NFC West
09:57there's not really
09:58any singular team

11:14but the roster
11:15beyond that
11:16is still very very good.

11:25the Rams
11:25are favored
11:26to win the Super Bowl
11:27favored to win the West

11:32Now if it is next year

11:35the Rams win the Super Bowl

11:40and now it's going to be Simpson

11:42they're probably not favorites
11:43to win the Super Bowl
11:45but they'd be
11:45up toward the top.
