Moscow is keeping the payload’s identity secret; independent data indicate the mission may be related to the GLONASS navigation system

Russia has placed a new satellite intended for the Ministry of Defense into orbit following the launch of a Soyuz-2.1b rocket from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome in the country’s northwest. The mission took place in the early hours of Monday (24) and was carried out by the Space Troops of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

The Soyuz-2.1b lifted off at 5:40 a.m. Moscow time, equivalent to 2:40 UTC, carrying a payload whose identity and specific purpose were not disclosed by Russian authorities. The launch took place from the Plesetsk military complex, located in the Arkhangelsk region and traditionally used for defense-related space missions.
