00:00The Browns waived tight end Daquan Wright on Sunday.
00:04He will clear waivers.
00:05He was, this is his second NFL team that he is on.
00:09So he will clear waivers.
00:11And there is a deal in place with Lane Kiffin
00:15to bring Wright to or back to college sports.
00:21Wright had previously played four years at Ole Miss
00:24before entering the NFL draft.
00:26He did go undrafted,
00:28but now he could become the first player
00:30to be on an NFL roster
00:32and then go back to college football.
00:36How did this happen?
00:38Well, it happened because he was part of a lawsuit
00:41in Louisiana by three players from Ole Miss
00:47headlined by Jack Plyburn,
00:50who is a former LSU edge rusher,
00:53who is trying to go back to college.
00:57The players argued that they're ineligible under the old rules,
01:02but they would be eligible under the new rules,
01:05which gives a player a fifth year option of eligibility.
01:08They should not be punished simply because the change came
01:13after their college careers ended.
01:15And wouldn't you know it?
01:16A judge in Louisiana agreed that these players should get a fifth year
01:22and that there is a special week long transfer portal for these players
01:27that want to go back to college,
01:29who have been part of NFL rosters to say,
01:32Hey, you know what?
01:32You're okay.
01:33What was the biggest hook to this was the judge also barred the NCAA
01:39from enforcing its own ban on players returning to college
01:44after signing a professional contract.
01:47This was orchestrated by LSU,
01:52by Lane Kiffin,
01:53in the right judge,
01:55in the right courtroom to get this to happen.
01:58And the fallout from this is going to be loud.
02:03There are a lot of people who are really angry about this,
02:08but I don't think this is a long-term deal.
02:11Okay.
02:12This doesn't feel like this is everyone that the floodgates open,
02:17that we're going to have just a ridiculous,
02:21horrific run of players signing contracts with the NFL
02:25to only go back to college.
02:28I don't think this is going to happen.
02:30The 10th Circuit of Appeals granted the NCAA a stay on Friday morning
02:36in order that reversed the judge's decision
02:40that it opened the door for all athletes starting in the 22-23 academic year
02:46and had played for four consecutive seasons to return for a fifth.
02:50But that stay does not wipe out the cases of dozens of athletes
02:54who have successfully petitioned restraining orders
02:57to play a fifth year in state courts around the country.
03:02So that is the problem,
03:04but it also puts this shield over the sport for the long term.
03:11Will we see a college player who has gone to an NFL camp,
03:16training camp, play this year in college football?
03:19Yes.
03:20Is that LSU just gaining the system?
03:25Yes.
03:26That's LSU playing dirty,
03:29but also just being smarter than everyone else.
03:33It's not a surprise this happened in the SEC.
03:36I mean, this is just the way it works down there.
03:39They find loopholes and they find different ways
03:42to get the players that they want.
03:44There is a ton riding on Lane Kiffin and LSU being successful this year.
03:49Lane Kiffin believes they can win a national championship this year.
03:53Think about all the bad blood that that guy created at Ole Miss
03:57and around the SEC when he left a playoff team to go take the LSU job.
04:03He had a team in the playoffs and he left.
04:07So, if he could go to LSU and win a national championship in year number one,
04:13well, then everything is quiet, right?
04:15There are no negative thoughts as to what did you do?
04:20Why did you do it?
04:21What type of man are you?
04:22Why would you do this?
04:23So, I think there is a ton riding on the first year of LSU.
04:29Having a judge go ahead and okay this isn't surprising to me in particular
04:36because it happened in Louisiana where these players are going to wind up going.
04:41They're all going to go back.
04:43Three big name players, headlined by Wright, they're going to go back.
04:47These might not be NFL players, right?
04:50They may not be good enough to make an NFL roster,
04:52but they are extremely talented college football players.
04:57And they've been in college for a long time.
05:00These are men.
05:01These are men going back to college who now have had a taste of what the NFL looks like.
05:07And I heard Mike Vrabel this morning on Boston Media say,
05:12just because you pay players more money doesn't mean there's more jobs in the NFL.
05:18So, this is going to be a problem for a long time.
05:21That these players who go and get drafted in the 5th, 6th, 7th, undrafted free agents,
05:27they get brought in to play in the NFL.
05:30And they have to unseat somebody to take their job for them to have an NFL job.
05:36And it's really hard to make a roster in the NFL.
05:40And so, you have all these college players at the final cut down day
05:45who are now all available, who now don't know what to do.
05:48So, if I could make $500,000 in NIL money to go back to college,
05:54why wouldn't I just do that?
