00:00:32He was one tough son of a gun.
00:00:35Had more guts than anybody I ever knew.

00:00:46Welcome to my home and my family.
00:00:49Where I was born, when I was born, how I grew up.
00:00:52I'm not sure I've ever grown up.
00:00:55I'm not really from any place.
00:00:57I was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
00:00:59And it was April 17, 1954.
00:01:06I moved to a different town every year of my life.
00:01:10The Paw, Manitoba, which is an Indian reservation.
00:01:13Port Arthur, Glasgow, Melbourne, Toronto, Winnipeg, and some others in between.
00:01:20So this has been the longest I've ever lived in any place.
00:01:25I picked up the bagpipes somehow in DePaul, Manitoba, Canada.
00:01:30But that's where I started when I was six years old, playing the bagpipes.
00:01:34I got into my bagpipes a lot and it kind of pulled me away from everybody and made me, you
00:01:41know, still to this day, even with my own family, sometimes I'm a loner.
00:01:45It actually became a hideaway for me and those bagpipes have been my entire life.
00:01:50I played those bagpipes.
00:01:52I played those bagpipes.
00:01:52It was my way of escaping when I didn't have no place to go.
00:02:03I was 13 when I left home and it just got really, um, it's just time to go.
00:02:16I was just a lost kid.
00:02:17I was just lost.
00:02:18I didn't have any place to go.
00:02:23So I took my bagpipes, I'm not even sure I was Lea, I just wanted to go, and I just
00:02:28never went back.
00:02:32Living on the street made me what I am today.
00:02:39I learned to have compassion and not be quite so judgmental.
00:02:50When I got my first wrestling match, um, I was living in a youth hostel, I wasn't doing too well
00:02:57in school, and my amateur goes to Father O'Malley, you know, he says, you know, Roderick, he says, this is
00:03:03what's going to happen to you.
00:03:04You're going to go out some night, you're going to be cold, you're going to rob a 7-Eleven, they're
00:03:09going to catch you, they're going to put you in jail, they're going to rape you, then they're going to
00:03:13kill you.
00:03:14Do you know this for sure, you know, tell you what I got, he says, have you ever seen professional
00:03:19wrestling?
00:03:19I said, no, sir.
00:03:20He says, I can get you $25.
00:03:23You know, that was like three months rent, because you had to pay a quarter a night at this youth
00:03:28hostel.
00:03:28I played with a band called Caber Faye, our city of Toronto pipe band.
00:03:32So I told my pipe band, hey, I've got this professional wrestling match, and they were so happy that I
00:03:39was doing something honest, that they said, we'll play you to the ring.
00:03:43The first time I came into the ring, the announcer, he just knew when my name was Roddy, but he
00:03:48saw this pipe band coming in.
00:03:50So he had to announce something, and he says, ladies and gentlemen, here comes Roddy the Piper.
00:03:58I was 167 pounds, and the guy I wrestled, his name was Larry Henney.
00:04:04320 pounds, 6'5", my first world record that night.
00:04:08Bell rang, and then the bell rang.
00:04:11Shortest match in the history of the Winnipeg Arena, 10 seconds.
00:04:14I still think I hold that record.
00:04:16I come back and the promoter, a guy's name is Al Tomko, give me my 25 bucks.
00:04:22Canadian.
00:04:25And my nose is broke, you know, and Larry only hit me twice, but he did a good job.
00:04:30And I was drooping.
00:04:31He says, kid, how'd you like to go to Kansas City?
00:04:33I didn't say this, but I thought, you know, is Larry Henney going to be there?
00:04:37And then they put me in a van, and that's how I got into pro wrestling, and I never stopped.
00:04:44To break into the wrestling business at age 15 in the 1970s has got to be very tough.
00:04:49The guys in the 70s really wanted you to prove something.
00:04:52They wanted to prove that you were willing to do anything to be in the wrestling business.
00:04:56They used to do some terrible things to me, man.
00:04:58Sometimes get beat up in a way, and see if you would be back the next day, receive some more.
00:05:05And you learned to survive, or you didn't exist.
00:05:09They would drop me off.
00:05:10They'd say, kid, you know what, go in there, yeah, go in there and get those sandwiches and stuff.
00:05:15And he said, the arena's just around the corner, and we'll meet you there.
00:05:18We'll be like 25 miles down the road, and I'll be hitchhiking down and scared to death.
00:05:23They were very protective who came inside the business.
00:05:26Oh, man, man, until maybe I was 20, 21, and a guy named Judo Gene LaBelle, one of the toughest
00:05:33guys in the world, without a doubt, trained Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris.
00:05:36When I got to L.A., which I got my first break, he took an interest in me, and he
00:05:41taught me how to take care of myself.
00:05:42I think it probably built him a lot of respect for the business.
00:05:48His teenage years were very, very hard.
00:05:52Wrestling, it saved my life.
00:05:54It saved my life for sure.
00:05:57I went from Winnipeg, Kansas City, to Emil Dupree, which is in Moncton territory, only runs here in the summertime,
00:06:06Minneapolis.
00:06:07He was coming from Winnipeg, Canada, down to Minneapolis, and he was an extra on TV.
00:06:11Ham and Edgar, skinny kid, 15, 16 years old.
00:06:16To Texas, and he came through Texas, and he was a young punk kid in a skirt, kilt, dress, whatever
00:06:23you want to call it.
00:06:23To Montreal, to Japan.
00:06:26I hated Japan so much.
00:06:28To Dallas, to Los Angeles, and that's where I got my first break.
00:06:33You know the old saying, when opportunity knocks, you better be at home, and he was at home.
00:06:37There was this man in L.A., he's a genius.
00:06:40His name was Leo Garibaldi, and this is exactly what he said.
00:06:43I came into Los Angeles, and, you know, I've got a kilt and bagpipes, and I'm young, and he's looking
00:06:48at me.
00:06:48He's going, what am I supposed to do with this guy?
00:06:50You know, I mean, everybody in the building knows they can beat him.
00:06:53Leo Garibaldi comes up to me, and he says, kid, I'm going to give you a break.
00:06:57So I want you to get in the ring with Jabba Rook, and for 45 minutes, I don't want you,
00:07:02Rod, to lay a hand on him.
00:07:03Let him beat the dog out of you, and he walked away.
00:07:07Okay, so I went out there and did it.
00:07:10A week later, when I started managing Jabba Rook, they put a microphone in my hand, said, you can say
00:07:15anything you want to.
00:07:18Anything?
00:07:19And that's how it started.
00:07:21I didn't get where I am by talking.
00:07:23Of course, when you carry a big stick, you don't got to walk so soft, huh?
00:07:25I sounds like thunder, and I moves like lightning.
00:07:28So we'll find out, brother, if the going up was worth the coming down.
00:07:31What is Roddy Piper talking about?
00:07:34Chavo Guerrero and the Guerrero family were legends in Mexico.
00:07:37From Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico, the former World's and the former America's heavyweight champion, he weighs 219, Chavo Guerrero.
00:07:49Chavo and I taught each other a whole lot.
00:07:53Entering the ring in front of me out of Glasgow and Scotland, and he weighs 229, it's Roddy Piper.
00:08:02Chavo and I clicked so well, that's why Leo Garibaldi put us in those matches, and it turned into a
00:08:09three-year run.
00:08:10This is your main event, and this is going to be a war.
00:08:14The youngest wrestling millionaire, Roddy Piper.
00:08:17Roddy Piper, unhappy man.
00:08:22Go ahead, Roddy Piper, hit him.
00:08:24I'd like to see you get kicked out of the Los Angeles area.
00:08:28Fans giving their opinion.
00:08:31We're telling Roddy Piper, we don't like you as a wrestler, we don't like you as a referee.
00:08:35One, two, three.
00:08:37Hey, one, two, three.
00:08:38Hey, NWA referee, Victor Rivera, raises the hand of Chavo Guerrero.
00:08:46They allowed me to get creative, and I was down in Tijuana.
00:08:50Well, I got a lot of trouble for this man.
00:08:52I did this interview on a donkey, painted like a zebra.
00:08:57I had a sombrero on, and a stick with a carrot on it, and I've got Conqueror of the Guerreros.
00:09:04And the TV got really angry, because of Hispanic TV.
00:09:09So the promoter, Mike LaBelle, came down on me.
00:09:12And so I says, well, ladies and gentlemen, the first interview, I said, I apologize.
00:09:17I'm very sorry.
00:09:18I'm going to learn how to play the Mexican national anthem on the guaita, the bagpipes in Spanish.
00:09:22And the next week, I came back and said, I got it.
00:09:25Please rise for the Mexican national anthem.
00:09:27I blew up my bagpipes, and I started to play.
00:09:30La cucaracha, la cucaracha, da-da-da.
00:09:32Here comes the chairs that were bolted down.
00:09:35Boom!
00:09:36The night never got started.
00:09:38And that's when Vince McMahon Sr. got wind of this kid in L.A.
00:09:43I had a lot of respect for a hot rod, and the word that was seeping to the southeast about
00:09:49a hot rod.
00:09:50Well, I think the legend of Roddy Piper began, actually, you know, started to really unveil in Portland, Oregon.
00:09:56Roddy's reputation in Oregon was one that was far-reaching.
00:10:01Boy, look at him mobbing Piper.
00:10:03Holy mackerel, they're all over him.
00:10:06And listen to this crowd.
00:10:08Listen to this crowd.
00:10:10And what a welcome to Roddy Roddy Piper.
00:10:12They are standing up.
00:10:14He is getting a standing ovation.
00:10:17What a, what a beautiful, oh, what a beautiful reception.
00:10:23Roddy Roddy Piper returns to the Portland ring, and these fans are frantic tonight.
00:10:29We were here before the Northwest was cool, brother.
00:10:33We fought in the mud and the blood and the beer.
00:10:36Back in those days, there was a promoter in Oregon by the name of Don Owens.
00:10:39And Don was an old-time promoter, had a territory in the Portland area, ran Seattle, Portland, and that whole
00:10:46Northwest region.
00:10:48Piper's relationship with Don Owens was unique because he feels like Don gave him his first break.
00:10:52And Roddy never forgot, you know, that first guy that helped him out.
00:10:55And he refused to wrestle in Portland for the WWE against Don and his, still at that point, local crew,
00:11:02which is just a, just a, just a word of respect.
00:11:04And I'm sure Vince respected Roddy for it.
00:11:06I owe Portland this, brothers!
00:11:08For no other reason other than being a good man, uh, I just couldn't work against him.
00:11:15Don Owens was like a father figure to Roddy.
00:11:17He's a good guy. He cared.
00:11:19And Roddy truly loved Don Owens.
00:11:25There was a guy named Ric Flair on the East Coast.
00:11:27There was a guy named George Scott who was booking.
00:11:30And they called me, and I drove the old Yellow Canary right across the country.
00:11:35The next stop was Charlotte, North Carolina, and then everything started to get out of control.
00:11:40I guess the whole world knows now that the greatest wrestling in the whole entire wide world
00:11:46comes right out of the Mid-Atlantic area.
00:11:48And Roddy, Piper, and I are glad to be here, brother.
00:11:51Piper came in 1977.
00:11:53I've never stopped being entertained since.
00:11:56He, um, brought a breath of fresh life to the industry, I think.
00:12:01Ric Flair, uh, I got so much respect for him.
00:12:04Ric and I were so different, you know, I wear a kilt, Ric doesn't.
00:12:08He's blonde, I ain't, you know, uh, that we got along real well outside the ring.
00:12:15Piper and Flair have formed a pact, and where there's trouble, we won't be hard to find.
00:12:21Inside the ring, we were both competing to be the best that we could be.
00:12:25During that time, probably is when I got as much polish and refinement in two areas, the actual wrestling match.
00:12:33He was a very, very hard-working, very determined guy.
00:12:36Claire turning, Tristing, finding Piper riding him.
00:12:41It put me on the map as, we better take a look at this guy.
00:12:46First impression with Roddy was a tall, skinny, red-headed, freckle-faced guy that, uh, didn't have a lot of
00:12:53ability in the ring, but he had a lot of heart, and he had a lot of talent behind that
00:12:58microphone.
00:12:59When RP talks, people will listen, because they don't know like I know, do they?
00:13:05When I first came in to Charlotte, Ric Flair was hesitant of me.
00:13:11He walked into Charlotte, and he took over.
00:13:14My name is Roddy Piper, in case you didn't know.
00:13:16We're going to see how much Rod can they handle.
00:13:19Piper was a natural heat-getter.
00:13:20You know, here's a guy in a skirt telling you he's a man.
00:13:23And everybody, of course, you know, you're wearing your dress and all that stuff, and Hot Rod, take away the
00:13:27grain of salt.
00:13:28He had a character that stood out among all the others.
00:13:32Well, it's never been a gimmick.
00:13:34You know, I came fifth in the world.
00:13:36He backed it up.
00:13:37I mean, I had to give him credit where credit was due.
00:13:40That took a lot of guts to walk into a dressing room, especially in the 70s, in a dress.
00:13:44After a while, you didn't even notice he had on a dress.
00:13:47I got my head beat in a lot wearing that jacket, but I wore it.
00:13:52Piper made a big mark in the NWA.
00:13:54Well, I figured the only way to get it done, I guess, is quit shooting mouths off and go out
00:13:58there and do a little wrestling.
00:14:00A wild man, Roddy Piper.
00:14:01Roddy Piper, the only way that he's really been outstanding in this match is his bad sportsmanship.
00:14:08And we can expect anything to happen in this match.
00:14:10He hit him in the jaw with all the coins.
00:14:13Now, wait a minute.
00:14:18Who is the winner?
00:14:19Roddy Piper was.
00:14:20You got that right.
00:14:21But you hit him with a...
00:14:22I hit him with nothing.
00:14:23I hit him with nothing but power.
00:14:25I told you, Piper, Piper.
00:14:27I told you, nobody.
00:14:29Nobody messing with Piper.
00:14:30One of the most graphic, memorable matches I can recall seeing was in the early 80s and the infamous dog
00:14:43collar match that Piper had with Greg Valentine.
00:14:46Fans, I'm Bob Caudill, along with Gordon Sola, and we're delighted to be bringing you, wherever you are, live from
00:14:53Greensboro, North Carolina, Starrcade 83.
00:14:56The first Starrcade was monumental for a number of reasons.
00:14:58It had a number of great matches on it.
00:15:00It also was a vehicle for Crockett to launch himself into what they felt was the same level that Vince
00:15:07McMahon, you know, was or hoped to be in the near future.
00:15:10It became a war of the North against the South, so the South said, all right, we're going to put
00:15:14on the first pay-per-view ever.
00:15:16This is the wrestling event of all time.
00:15:19Thanksgiving night, it was huge.
00:15:21The crowd was so responsive, and it was just a great, great occasion.
00:15:25This is bringing a whole new era to professional wrestling, and for those of you who are watching tonight, you
00:15:32are watching history in the making.
00:15:34Jimmy Crockett says to me, I want the most brutal match that you can come up with.
00:15:3812 foot of loggers chain, 40 pounds of chain, then they're going to take a dog collar, had him made
00:15:44up myself.
00:15:44I went to a shoemaker, and I had the shoemaker inch-and-a-half leather collars, and I'm thinking, oh,
00:15:51brutal, brutal, brutal, brutal.
00:15:52Ah, put spikes, spikes on the collars.
00:15:56Ladies and gentlemen, our next event of the evening is a very special match.
00:16:00This is a collar match.
00:16:03Both of these wrestlers will be chained to each other around the necks throughout the duration of this event.
00:16:10This event has no disqualification and no time limit to a finish.
00:16:18All the guys, all the talent from the back was up front watching it through the curtains because we knew
00:16:23what kind of match it was going to be,
00:16:24and it was the WrestleMania match for NWA at the time.
00:16:29It was hot.
00:16:30I think it's got to be the most dangerous match that I've ever heard of in professional wrestling.
00:16:35The neck can be severely injured with a jerk or a twist or something with his collar around it.
00:16:40I can't imagine two men linked together like this in Mortal Kombat.
00:16:45Roddy Piper, so far, during the match, has been able to use the chain more to his advantage.
00:16:50I remember, graphically, remember Piper bleeding from the ear.
00:16:55Looks like he caught him on that ear.
00:16:56And Roddy Piper right here could be in real danger, fans.
00:17:01We really potatoed each other a lot.
00:17:02He had the chain, and he'd come down on his ear, but he somehow, like, he cupped it and broke
00:17:09the eardrum.
00:17:11Gordon, he could lose the hearing in that ear and the use of that ear forever.
00:17:14He cannot maintain his balance. He cannot keep his equilibrium.
00:17:18I saw it at first through the magazines and couldn't believe that people would resort to that type of brutality.
00:17:25The idea that people would do that to each other was exciting to me.
00:17:28He looks almost like he's to the point of being unable to defend himself.
00:17:32Well, you talk about intestinal fortitude, talking about fighting on instinct alone.
00:17:37He can hardly move at this point.
00:17:39Piper, he's just a tough guy, whether he looks at it or not. He is a tough guy.
00:17:45Piper and Valentine, they put on a show.
00:17:49Piper having problems now, standing upright, but seems to be getting it back.
00:17:54What a comeback here. It's been a match where it's been a fabulous survival between these two.
00:18:00And Piper still trying to figure out now at this point where he is.
00:18:04And now he's got the changes hitting him with it.
00:18:10Roddy Piper did it. Roddy Piper did it.
00:18:14And it was sure determination that kept him going.
00:18:16In this year, here, you can see I lost 50% of the hearing in this year from Valentine beating
00:18:21on it.
00:18:21Hey, Valentine, is that the best you can do?
00:18:24Huh? You say your strategy wants to take away all my hearing.
00:18:29You see what you forgot is you've got one more ear to go.
00:18:32That was a grueling match.
00:18:33It was a ridiculously hard match.
00:18:36It was one of the toughest match I've probably ever been in, especially with Valentine.
00:18:41To do it again, it hurts.
00:18:46To do it again, it hurts.
00:18:54Regardless of the injury, the feedback on it was you couldn't get better feedback.
00:18:58At this time, everything was sweltering. It was ready to go.
00:19:03All of a sudden Jimmy Crockett says Roddy, can I speak to you for a sec?
00:19:06I walked into his office and he says listen I just got a call from Vince McMahon and he says
00:19:12when we're finished with you here he would like you to come on up. Vince McMahon tried to compile
00:19:19the best talent in the business from here from there from AWA, NWA, Florida and guess what
00:19:26he got him and then he would showcase the hell out of him. So coming into New York I couldn't
00:19:33keep my equilibrium and having that problem they made me Paul Orndorff and Dr. Schultz manager.
00:19:40Roddy, Roddy Piper about ringside rustler extraordinaire and apparently now trying his hand at managing.
00:19:47Vince felt he would bring Roddy Piper in, use him as a mouthpiece to get Dr. D and Orndorff get
00:19:54them over.
00:19:55We're 28 years old in our prime when you were 28 years old did you have a prime man?
00:20:03And then when the fans when they were ready here he has this ace in the hole Roddy Piper
00:20:08make them wait and when it was time when they wanted to see Roddy get his ass kicked
00:20:15okay wait a little bit longer and then it really meant something.
00:20:19Piper and I have to say it was pretty good some of the stuff he come up with was good.
00:20:22I could talk that was his strong point was talking.
00:20:28We are the generation that is prime time now we did not come here to play no game.
00:20:34So I had that confidence that if I can get that microphone two things one I will definitely
00:20:42get over because of my past and the material I had and two I'm gonna wrestle on TV they got
00:20:49a pain to see me wrestle.
00:20:54I was in a bar in St. Louis, Vince McMahon Jr's there.
00:20:58I said tell you what you give me five weeks of bowtie and a mic stand if I don't have
00:21:03the job done I'm out of here.
00:21:05Tonight I have two special announcements I'm very pleased to make.
00:21:09Victory Magazine which is the only sanctioned publication of the World Wrestling Federation is changing its name.

00:21:38I just you know kind of made it out for the one long.
00:21:42I am the originator of Piper's Pit and I'd like to explain why especially to you you have been doing
00:21:49a tremendous job and
00:21:53with a few flaws and I'm trying to be political when I say this you're being kind of stupid.

00:22:05He knew what he wanted to say and he had his way of saying it and everything and it was
00:22:10good.

00:23:03I've never lost a match in Columbus, Ohio. Have you ever lost a match?

00:23:08You have.
00:23:09And it was what I think everybody would want to see, you know, on a talk show.
00:23:14Somebody that can't speak well or somebody that can't, you know, make a comeback.
00:23:18Somebody that can't answer your questions. Great. Eat them alive. And Piper did.
00:23:23And it was, it was revolutionary at the time. It had never been done before.
00:23:27Instead of going after a man, you just back off from him. Maybe a little cowardism.
00:23:31Maybe what you do, maybe you should be making pizzas.
00:23:32I'm not a coward of nobody. I'm not afraid of nobody. Otherwise, I won't be.

00:23:59And boom. And I nail him just a couple of times out the curtain.
00:24:08It's simple. It's it.
00:24:09Here comes Frankie back. He's going to get his first win.
00:24:13And I had to get out. I had to nail him. Boom. Got him out.
00:24:15Just when they think they got the answers, I changed the questions.
00:24:20That whole thing, because you had the most ridiculous answer,
00:24:23but at the same time, you understood that Frankie wasn't lying or nothing.
00:24:27He was just being Frankie.
00:24:28If that first sentence might have been, well, you know, I was born in San Juan
00:24:33and then we rode over and, you know, I got to Columbus in the end.
00:24:37I might not have it a second week.
00:24:39When he said, I'm from Columbus, Ohio, we're rolling.
00:24:43And it set the tone for everything.
00:24:46And guys didn't want to come on it.
00:24:49Here we have this week on Piper's Pit.

00:24:58There was this behind the stage joke that he had been doing with me,

00:25:09Well, I've been going around for like three weeks, or I don't know.
00:25:12It was just one of those stupid things that was going around the dressing room.
00:25:15So when I got out in the Piper's Pit, whatever the first question I asked him,
00:25:19you know what he said to me?
00:25:20I'm sorry, do you speak English?
00:25:22Where do you come from?
00:25:27None of your business.
00:25:29So when I heard him do that, then it was, you know, weeny weeny.
00:25:34It was time to get right into it.
00:25:35I understand big body, little, tiny weeny brain.
00:25:40I can understand that.
00:25:41That's very simple.
00:25:42When he picked me up, you know, it was great.
00:25:44I enjoyed that quite a bit, actually.

00:26:53while at the same time raising his game as well.

00:32:03was Andre ripping that chain off

00:32:08There was always something took place in a Piper's Pit,
00:32:11and I think that's why people liked it so much,
00:32:13because you never know what to expect.
00:32:19Piper had a great relationship
00:32:21with Randy Orton's father, Bob Orton Jr.
00:32:24When I got with Bob Orton Jr.,
00:32:26well, I wrestled his dad.
00:32:28And we would share stories
00:32:30that were very personal stories right from the get-go,

00:32:39but they traveled together for most of my father's stint.

00:41:42And it was the hottest ticket in New York at the time.
00:41:46And the buzz around the country about this WrestleMania was so strong,
00:41:52it was something that none of us have felt before.
00:41:55And this is still a point of contention between Hogan and I.
00:41:58Who really drew WrestleMania?
00:42:00I don't think Piper deserves as much credit for the success of WrestleMania as Vince McMahon
00:42:05or even myself.
00:42:06I think Piper was a player, but we had a lot of players.
00:42:11They don't come to see Hulk Hogan.
00:42:13They don't come to see Roy Piper.
00:42:16They come to see Hulk Hogan beat the out of Roddy Piper.
00:42:20Big scores to be settled here as WrestleMania makes history.
00:42:24What excitement and action and what extraordinary athletes are involved in this confrontation.
00:42:30Hulk Hogan was the hero.
00:42:32Roddy Piper was the great villain.
00:42:34And in reality, those were the two stars of WrestleMania.
00:42:38And then you had Mr. T and you had Paul Orndorff.
00:42:41It couldn't have happened without all four guys involved.
00:42:49Mr. T, his idea was T comes in and takes Piper and Orndorff's head and bangs them together,
00:42:55you know, and boom, boom.
00:42:56You're out of your mind.
00:42:58Only one way to do this.
00:43:00Don't let Mr. T throw one punch and everything you do with him, keep it amateur.

00:48:17And he was just wired for that.

00:49:38And the cart came back, but it malfunctioned.
00:49:41And I'm standing at the curtain, and Vince is standing to my right, and I'm waiting, and I can feel
00:49:46it.
00:49:47And I'm thinking to myself, hey, if I can't run to the ring, how the hell am I supposed to
00:49:50wrestle?
00:49:52Standing ovation for Rowdy Rowdy Piper, Jess.
00:49:55Well, this is it, Gorilla.
00:49:56He's announced his retirement.
00:49:58This is the last hurrah!
00:50:00And when I got up inside that ring, and I looked around at these people, and they were all standing,
00:50:05and they were clapping and cheering.
00:50:07Rowdy Piper leaving the ranks in professional wrestling, following this historic event.

00:50:14Big smile on his face, as he has a standing ovation here.
00:50:1890,000-plus on their feet with a hot draw.
00:50:21And looked around for the first time, really connected as, hey, it's been a good time, thank you.
00:50:30When you come to see me fight, you've got your money's worth.
00:50:34I never surrendered, and I never retreated from nothing.
00:50:38Thank you.
00:50:42For myself to stay on top, I needed to get out of the business completely, do something in another form,
00:50:51and walk back in the front door.
00:50:55John is a great director, and I was really honored that he would put this movie out with me.
00:51:01Obviously, it was a venture, putting a wrestler in a key position.
00:51:07I thought he had a quality.
00:51:08Not only watching him in Piper's Pit, but watching him in the ring.
00:51:13I thought I could probably make a movie with him.
00:51:15We worked very well together.
00:51:17A very difficult movie to get through.
00:51:19The role required a lot of physical action, and I just thought he had something, you know?
00:51:23He had a quality. I think that's what you see in all actors.
00:51:26There's some spark that gets you going.
00:51:28I had just been in the largest indoor crowd in the history of America, and we just did a movie.
00:51:34So, there was no ego, because we weren't in the same business.
00:51:38The character of John Nada in They Live is really based a lot on Roddy, and his past, and what
00:51:43he'd been through.
00:51:44And he added a lot of color to that.
00:51:46White male, 30s, long hair.
00:51:49Mama don't like tattletales.
00:51:51Wearing sunglasses.
00:51:52Interestingly, when we made the movie, two things he contributed most to that film.
00:51:58One was that alley fight.
00:52:00That was a chance to do really a big, big fight in the middle of a movie.
00:52:04Roddy and Keith David rehearsed.
00:52:05They rehearsed their parts, but they rehearsed the fight for about a month.
00:52:09And it was great. I mean, it really was a fabulous scene.
00:52:13And the other thing he contributed was he gave me a notebook.
00:52:16Now, in this notebook were written all these phrases and ideas he had for interviews.
00:52:22Going way back to when he was wrestling Playboy Buddy Rose and the various wrestlers.
00:52:28And little ideas for things he could say.
00:52:31And right there, sitting there, was, I've come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass.
00:52:34I'm all out of bubblegum.
00:52:36Well, that's a great line. I can use that.
00:52:38I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass.
00:52:42And I'm all out of bubblegum.
00:52:44I'm all out of bubblegum.
00:52:50Roddy was real smart in that he would take breaks from time to time.
00:52:54He'd be off for a couple months and he'd go away.
00:52:57He'd give you a rest.
00:52:58So you didn't have Piper's Pit all the time.
00:53:01And when it did appear, you wanted to see it because it was going to be something good.
00:53:06Vince had this idea of having brother love interview Roddy Piper.
00:53:21And so you take the biggest mouth that we had at the time, that was me, and you take the
00:53:28biggest mouth from the past that everybody else was compared to, which was Piper.
00:53:33Put those two in there, and then you take the single biggest mouth on television at the time, the hottest
00:53:40mouth on television at the time, Morton Downey.
00:53:43Man, what was going to happen?
00:53:46Mr. Downey, I'd really appreciate it if you wouldn't do that again.
00:53:50Smoke?
00:53:51Yeah, especially blow at my face.
00:53:54He was really a perfect match because Morton Downey was like, I'm the king.
00:53:59Nobody can touch me.
00:54:00Used to have all these nasty warts all over your face.
00:54:06Big nasty green ones.
00:54:09The only thing you could go out with was a guy who ran bells and used to walk, oh, nice
00:54:15to see ya.
00:54:16What happened to the warts?
00:54:18I gave them to a homeless warthog.
00:54:21I didn't know your girlfriend was homeless.
00:54:27Obviously, Morton had never met Roddy before.
00:54:30He's puffing on this cigarette, and every time he takes a drag, he blows smoke right in Piper's face.
00:54:35You know, that's like the fourth time you've done that, you know?
00:54:38And I'm gonna say this to you again.
00:54:41Don't blow no more smoke in my face.
00:54:44Do you understand that?
00:54:45Try this.
00:54:46You're like, watch.
00:54:49And finally, Piper took it and took it and took it.
00:54:52And he asked Morton Downey not to blow any more smoke in his face.

00:55:26It's right over his head.
00:55:27And I was gonna bring the fire extinguisher down, the fire extinguisher down on his head,
00:55:32because, you know, you do that more like you use the single leg take down.
00:55:35You're gonna go down, and you can hear Gorilla Monsoon going,
00:55:38No, Ronnie!
00:55:41Oh, oh, all right, and he let go, and that was the end of it.
00:55:44Hadn't been for, I think it was Gorilla or Ronnie.
00:55:46Hadn't been for them.
00:55:48That fire extinguisher would accidentally, and I lost it without doubt.

00:55:59What a disgrace that would be to have that person represent the World Wrestling Federation
00:56:05as the Intercontinental Champion wearing a skirt!
00:56:10Piper was one of the few guys in the business that, because of his great talent,
00:56:16lightning rod for controversy, his ability to raise everybody's game that he touched,
00:56:22he didn't need a title to be a main eventer.
00:56:26He didn't need a title to be famous.
00:56:28He didn't need a title to make money.
00:56:30He was that good.
00:56:32You realize Piper has never owned a title in the World Wrestling Federation?
00:56:38Let's face it, Piper was never the WWE Champion.
00:56:42As far as one thing that I didn't get accomplished that I should have, is that.
00:56:48And yes, it does bother me.
00:56:49Gus, that's the measuring stick of a lot of guys' careers.
00:56:52They want to know how many titles you won and what titles you won.
00:56:54He didn't need it.
00:56:56And Roddy Piper was a big enough star just being Roddy Piper.
00:57:00Roddy Piper, you know, was his own walking title.
00:57:04He was the world's, you know, funniest, brashest, most entertaining interview.

00:57:21I think Roddy's Intercontinental title was important to Roddy,
00:57:25and I think it was important to the fans to see Roddy win a championship.

00:57:38For Roddy Roddy Piper to win that Intercontinental Championship,
00:57:41it was big, probably bigger in the eyes of the fans than it was to Roddy Piper.
00:57:46And the hot Scott is wearing championship gold for the first time.
00:57:49Aw, isn't that nice!
00:57:52Look at the beautiful build he has to hold his skirt up!
00:57:55It was a wonderful moment and everything, but, you know, if I didn't get it, I wouldn't have lost any
00:58:01sleep over it.
00:58:02Uh, and besides, Brett needed a push.
00:58:05As a matter of fact, this is the first time these two men are meeting for the World Wrestling Federation
00:58:10Intercontinental Title.
00:58:12Champion, Rowdy Rowdy Piper!

00:58:14His opponent, a former IC champion himself, number one contender, Brett the Hitman Hart.
00:58:20Brett Hart was at a point where he was an emerging superstar, where it was, his time was near.
00:58:27And probably in Brett's mind at WrestleMania 8, his time is past due.
00:58:33You can throw all the respect, and you can throw all the friendship right out the window.
00:58:37Roddy Piper, I want my belt back.
00:58:40All my, I never had a chance to wrestle.
00:58:43All my matches started, I would have banged.
00:58:45Piper, with that temper, flaring up, he's going wild on Watley.
00:58:50The referee cannot control him.
00:58:52Piper's a madman!
00:58:53With the match with Brett Hart, I was a champion.
00:58:59That's a completely different match.
00:59:01Completely different match.
00:59:03Plus, both were fan favorites.
00:59:06So it's a completely different way to wrestle.
00:59:08Good wrestling move.
00:59:10Nice single leg takedown and go behind by Hot Rod.
00:59:13Good ride, he stayed with him.
00:59:15And, oh, double clothesline!
00:59:18He didn't beat me, and I'll tell you why.
00:59:20I was gonna hit him over the head with a bell and cover it, and the referee was out of
00:59:23the way.
00:59:24Use it! Waffle him with it!
00:59:26Remember that old saying, what the hell? Use the bell!
00:59:30I waited, waited, and people were screaming, don't do it, don't do it.
00:59:33Crowd here at the Hoosier Dome has turned against Hot Rod.

00:59:39And they literally made him so bad fell away!
00:59:43And it's a sleeper!

00:59:47Brett wiggled his way where he could get to the turnbuckle, put both his feet up and hit the top

00:59:53This brought us back, his feet over my head.

01:00:07So what the referee should have done is check Brett's arm.

01:00:20Seventeen and a half years, nobody pinned my shoulders.
01:00:22It doesn't matter who wears the belt here, we're looking at two tremendous champions!
01:00:29If you watch the match from bell to bell, probably one of the best, most sound, fundamentally sound, understandable stories
01:00:37that has ever been told in a match at WrestleMania.
01:00:41I dare say it's probably one of Roddy Piper's best matches ever.
01:00:46The knock on Roddy was he was, you know, mostly mouth and an incredible mouthpiece, but that he didn't have
01:00:52the wrestling to back it up.
01:00:54So it's nice, if you're Roddy Piper, to have that type of match to say, hey, look what I could
01:00:58do when the pressure was on.
01:01:02WrestleMania 10, Bret Hart, Yokozuna, going one on one against each other.
01:01:08And the special referee was...
01:01:09Rowdy!
01:01:11What?
01:01:12Rowdy!
01:01:13Piper!
01:01:15Roddy hadn't been on the scene for a while, and Roddy was unpredictable, and Roddy, you know, there's no love
01:01:21lost.
01:01:22Really, last time that you did see Roddy, it wasn't a match with Bret Hart, as far as any big
01:01:27high-profile match.
01:01:28So it was a natural, I mean, to put someone in there that would call it down the middle and
01:01:32not really have a favorite.
01:01:33I made some pretty disparaging remarks about Piper.
01:01:36I hate this guy!
01:01:38Lawler and Piper could have had the great debate in wrestling.
01:01:42Those are two of the quickest wits, sharpest minds, that understood human psychology probably as good as any two guys
01:01:52that you could ever name.
01:01:54Piper was sort of in and out because he was making movies and that sort of thing, and then Piper's
01:01:57pit was no more, and the King's Court was the big talk or interview segment on the show.
01:02:02This is the King's Court. Not to be confused with that ancient relic from Jurassic Park, Piper's pit. Do you
01:02:12remember Piper's pit?
01:02:15I had just come back from Indonesia doing a film or a thing, and it was a strange piece of
01:02:22business.
01:02:23Folks, later on tonight, Jerry Lawler has promised his guest will be Roddy Piper, so stay tuned for that.
01:02:29I told the audience that I was going to interview Roddy Piper, and everybody was all excited, and then of
01:02:34course the bagpipe music started, and out comes the skinny kid, this Roddy Piper impersonator, imposter.
01:02:40I'm begging you. I'm begging you, please. Don't make me bite you. Please, I want to back out right now.
01:02:48And, you know, he sounded exactly like Piper.
01:02:52Where'd you get that haircut? At a pet store?
01:02:54I got a cut at a pet store. It was a special. So I said, what the heck? I'm doing
01:03:00a new movie. It's going to be a sequel to Hell Comes to Frogtown.
01:03:04It's going to be called Hell Comes to Dogtown, starring my family and a couple of my neighbors. Can you
01:03:11believe that?
01:03:13It culminated with I actually had him get down and kiss my feet on the interview.
01:03:18Well, what you got to do in order to back out of this match, Roddy Roddy Piper, is you got
01:03:23to get down on your hands and knees and kiss my royal feet. Is that all right with you?
01:03:29That would be fine. Anything to get out of the match, man.
01:03:33So it was like, you know, I would then said, I made Roddy Roddy Piper kiss my feet.
01:03:36You want to fight Roddy Piper? Okay, good time. You done got it.
01:03:43And that led up to a match that he and I had, which I'd rather not remember and talk about
01:03:47any more so.
01:03:48It wasn't the greatest meshing of styles. It wasn't the prettiest thing you've ever seen.
01:03:56It wasn't there. The chemistry that I needed, I needed somebody to dig in more.
01:04:01Roddy with the back suplex, hooks the legs, referee to two.
01:04:07Yes, he got it.
01:04:10And it was one of those, well, you know what, I'm just gonna keep on trucking because nothing's making sense
01:04:16here and it's over, so why even talk about it?
01:04:21Would you please welcome the man whom Gorilla Monsoon personally chose as the acting president of the World Wrestling Federation.
01:04:32They say anything can happen in the World Wrestling Federation.
01:04:36Come on, McMahon, shut up, just tell us.
01:04:39Would you please welcome-
01:04:39Rowdy Roddy Piper!
01:04:43It was a wonderful gesture on the part of Vince McMahon in, one, keeping me in the fold, two, not
01:04:52being afraid to let me know that I have a certain amount of drawing power, that he knows, three, that
01:04:59he knows that he can give me what he needs and walk away and that it'll be accomplished in front
01:05:05of a live crowd.
01:05:06Can you imagine the World Wrestling Federation in the hands of Rowdy Roddy Piper? Anything can happen!
01:05:13The entire world at that time was mesmerized with one thing, and that was whether or not O.J. Simpson
01:05:27would be found guilty for the murder of Nicole Brown Simpson and Mr. Golden.
01:05:36And there might have been talk about having a match with O.J. Simpson at WrestleMania.
01:05:44And we pretty much decided that the O.J. Simpson thing would be a bad thing to do.
01:05:50We want a controversy, because we wanted Roddy involved in a very controversial issue.
01:06:04And so the Goldust was kind of substituted for O.J. Simpson to be Roddy's opponent at WrestleMania, and we
01:06:13began with the innuendo of Goldust coming on and approaching Roddy in different ways.
01:06:20At one time, you were literally huge.
01:06:27As a matter of fact, some of my earliest teenage fantasies derived right from this very pit.
01:06:36Watching you from the hills, I hung on your every word as each syllable spilled from your luscious lips.
01:06:49Goldust was the bizarre, androgynous, you know, kind of a sexual, kind of a weird son of a gun.
01:07:02I summed deeper and deeper into my own sea of ecstasy.
01:07:09When you exploded that coconut over the head of one superfly, oh, I myself erupted.
01:07:19Goldust was bizarre.
01:07:21He represented everything Piper wasn't.
01:07:24Piper was a man's man.
01:07:27He was in your face, old school, let's fight now, here.
01:07:32Bottom line is that that was a tremendous clash of personality.
01:07:40You want a backlock fight?
01:07:42You want a fight, you jerk?
01:07:45Then I'll fight you, God.
01:07:46And you know what?
01:07:47I'm gonna make a man out of you.
01:07:51The backlock brawl was positively brutal.
01:07:55I'm pretty good with a baseball bat.
01:07:57Whoa!
01:07:58I hit this kid in the head hard.
01:08:00Sounded like a watermelon.
01:08:01Boom.
01:08:02You'll hear it.
01:08:03Oh!
01:08:04Oh, no!
01:08:07I gave him a concussion down.
01:08:09Boom.
01:08:10Roddy broke his wrist.
01:08:11I busted this hand on his head.
01:08:15Tough kid.
01:08:16Goldust is just trying to get out of there.
01:08:18He's running over.
01:08:19He's gonna hit him.
01:08:19He just hit him.
01:08:20He just hit Roddy Piper.
01:08:22You know, he knew I was gonna move.
01:08:25And so he had it right to the floor, because he wanted it.
01:08:29And as we get close, there was a moment where there was no way I could get out of the
01:08:32way.
01:08:34And I guess it's because this is what I do for a living.
01:08:37I just kind of analyzed it, and now I can do that.
01:08:42And as he came, I just hit the roof as hard as I could.
01:08:45Boom.
01:08:46Get him up off of a car.
01:08:48And then the car threw me off.
01:08:50This is totally out of hand.
01:08:52Roddy Piper was hit by a car.
01:08:54But we had a white Bronco kind of symbolizing O.J. Simpson.

01:09:02That aspect, obviously, was a little tongue-in-cheek.
01:09:06Probably not real funny if you're Fred Goldman.
01:09:10But needless to say, it was topical.
01:09:12It was a great brawl, and it ended up in hilarious fashion.
01:09:16A little tip of the hat to the O.J. Bronco chase.
01:09:20Every time we go back to Anaheim, to the pond, and we enter behind the building,
01:09:26I think of that match.
01:09:27It was brutal.
01:09:29It was truly brutal.
01:09:30They beat the hell out of each other with no apologies.
01:09:38As the wrestlers came on board with the WCW, we gained huge momentum.
01:09:43We became a very formidable opponent for the WWE.
01:09:46Piper was one of the main guys we needed, one of the last pieces of the puzzle.
01:09:50I'm an independent contractor, WCW, Hogan and Ben over there, Hall, Nash, etc, etc.
01:09:56You know, they were on a roll.
01:09:58I had not been working for Vince.
01:10:00I think I was doing movies.
01:10:03I saw, like, it wasn't that I was working for Vince and talking to Ben.
01:10:06He could do less and it would still mean more.
01:10:09He had great name identity.
01:10:11And people remembered WrestleMania 1 and 2.
01:10:14Why did I leave WWE?
01:10:17Money.
01:10:18More money.
01:10:20Well, Piper was brought to the WCW simply because he was a huge name in the WWE.
01:10:25When Roddy went to WCW, I think Roddy went to prove a point to himself, to Hogan, probably to Vince,
01:10:35that Roddy Piper was still Roddy Piper.
01:10:39Vince phoned me the night before and he says, hey, what better guy to put schnooker in the Hall of
01:10:44Fame?
01:10:45I says, Vince, I can't, man.
01:10:48He says, yeah, I've heard.
01:10:49He says, Vince, what do you want me to do?
01:10:51I don't know if you think of what you want me to do.
01:10:54He says, tell me you love me.
01:10:57I love you, goodbye.
01:11:01So I went over to the WCW and that becomes a whole other piece of work.
01:11:07You've been saying that if it wasn't for you, professional wrestling wouldn't be what it is today.
01:11:14Boy, do I got news for you.
01:11:17I come to you for a reality check there, partner.
01:11:22I come because, you see, I'm just as big an icon in this sport as you are.
01:11:30I got a t-shirt that said icon.
01:11:33Next week, Hogan had his music changed to the real icon, the real icon.
01:11:39And Macho Man had icon on his fingers.
01:11:43Guys, it was just something I said in a promo.
01:11:45I needed to justify it.
01:11:47For heaven's sake, we've wrestled so many times.
01:11:49We've got to have another reason.
01:11:51Okay, match of the icons.
01:11:52The match I had with Piper, icon versus icon, was a match that fans from 20 to 25 years ago
01:12:00could argue about.
01:12:02You know, come see, talk about who was the greatest wrestler, who was going to win, who was their favorite.
01:12:07This was an all-time icon match, so it had to be called icon versus icon.
01:12:12You're going to admit it.
01:12:14I am as big an icon in this sport.
01:12:16And whether you want to say it or not, you at least have the guts to put your hand out.
01:12:22And you shake my hand, and you admit that it isn't you that brought all these people here.
01:12:29It's all these people here that made you.
01:12:34The thing that Roddy Piper could do that is a lost art is that Roddy Piper could make an issue
01:12:42personal between himself and his opponent.
01:12:47So you really believed and felt down deep in your heart and soul that Roddy Piper truly, sincerely hated Hulk
01:12:58Hogan.
01:12:58If they didn't hate me so much, do you think they would have been cheering you so much?
01:13:06Until we die, the point will always be argued who the true icon was, is between Hogan and Piper.
01:13:17There will always be a rivalry.
01:13:21Who's the bigger star?
01:13:22Who's more famous?
01:13:24Who's better?
01:13:25Who made more money?
01:13:26Who had better movies?
01:13:28I am just as big a Hollywood movie star as you are!
01:13:35I think there was some real life tension there, and I think that's what made the feud so compelling in
01:13:40WCW.
01:13:42Let me have my piece, cuz I'm shooting with this one, folks.
01:13:45I don't care, man.
01:13:47I'm a multi-millionaire, too.
01:13:49I was here at the time in WWE, and I'll admit that they had the hot hand with that one.
01:13:55People wanted to see it, and it wasn't just a nostalgia act.
01:13:58People really, they really fed into the real life drama.
01:14:04Now that I look in your eyes, maybe we need to have the war that didn't settle the score.
01:14:10It said a real strong statement.
01:14:12You know, every time you put these guys together, they break a record.
01:14:15No matter where they're at, no matter how many times they need wrestling.
01:14:18It was a solid statement at a time when people were questioning who was where and why.
01:14:24People standing with NWL t-shirts on, chanting Roddy's name.
01:14:32That will be one of those lifelong rivals that when they're both 70 years old, that when they meet,
01:14:40one's gonna try and squeeze the other one's hand harder when they shake hands.
01:14:44One's gonna stand up on his tiptoes.
01:14:46The other one's gonna try and show his guns.

01:15:09It was a lot better feeling from this. We left our eagles at the door.
01:15:15One thing about Hogan is, as you tell me, Piper didn't lie, won.
01:15:22And if he gives his word, you can trust him.
01:15:24And Hogan had been doing a lot of business with people that you can't necessarily do that in our business.
01:15:31And so, any time that they would put Hogan in a situation, he said, I won't Piper there, because I
01:15:36know I can trust him.
01:15:37There became a lot of tension with Nash and Hall.
01:15:43It got ugly inside again.
01:15:46And, you know, I think they tried to push me a little bit, but they found that that didn't work.
01:15:53And then it just started falling apart.
01:15:56So they terminated me for incapacitation.
01:16:01And I had to take him to court, and I got the rest of my contract.
01:16:07Roddy has so much history here in WWE that people remember him.
01:16:14Roddy is one of the few that was a household name.
01:16:17Roddy was one of the few in the expansion and the boom of WWE that people remember.
01:16:25There was Hulk Hogan, there was Roddy Piper.
01:16:28And every time you bring him back, they remember.
01:16:31And he's introduced to a whole brand new young audience.

01:16:58Roddy was a surprise at WrestleMania.
01:17:01He wasn't even advertised to be a major part of the event at that WrestleMania in 2003.
01:17:10So the element of his name, the element of surprise, the element of Roddy being there unadvertised,
01:17:18was a bonus to the fans.
01:17:20And a pipe to the head of Hogan!
01:17:23Roddy Piper flooring Hogan with a steel pipe!
01:17:28At that time, Vince, when I came in, he wanted a short-term relationship, a three or four-month
01:17:34relationship.
01:17:35I come off a really bad car accident.
01:17:38I was in intensive care for nine days, broke my right ankle, four ribs, four ribs, one rib
01:17:45went into my liver four inches, my back in two places in my spleen.
01:17:49And, you know, my stomach was still heaving, the ribs.
01:17:52And so when I got in the ring, you know, I wasn't planning to take any clothes off.
01:17:56And I was still recovering from that.
01:17:58And so I had, there came a great content between Vince and I.
01:18:02I'll give you credit for having something to do with creating Piper's Pit.
01:18:06But it seems to me that lately you've created something else.
01:18:11What the hell is this, man?
01:18:14What the hell is that?
01:18:16Is this Piper's Pit or Piper's Paunch?
01:18:21It's almost like he was trying to take over Piper's and kill that thing up.
01:18:25The last time I saw a belly that size, Mae Young was nine months pregnant.
01:18:32And she had a hand.
01:18:34Looks like you're working on twins.
01:18:37And there's Hogan under a mask as Mr. America.
01:18:40And it was like, what are you doing?
01:18:43I can understand why you have a problem with Hulk Hogan, brother.
01:18:48Because ever since, I was a little teeny weeny American maniac.
01:18:55I remember watching Hulk Hogan kick your ass all over this great country.
01:19:01I would have liked to hit McMahon with the pipe, not Hogan.
01:19:05I think that there's more money to be drawn.
01:19:08There is money to be drawn Piper McMahon.
01:19:11Guess I believe it.
01:19:13Wait, wait.
01:19:15Get your damn arm off of me.
01:19:17I hate you too.
01:19:19And then the HBO thing came up.
01:19:21Roddy had done this HBO interview prior to coming back.
01:19:27And I think he was in probably a different place mentally at that time.
01:19:30I think he probably was in a darker place.
01:19:33Everybody's dead.
01:19:35They're all dying early.
01:19:38And nobody cares about it.
01:19:41The Roddy Piper I saw on HBO was full of self-pity.
01:19:46And woe is me.
01:19:48And the business has been bad.
01:19:51And here's the dark underbelly.
01:19:52I just sat down and told the truth.
01:19:54I've never stood on anybody in my life.
01:19:56Roddy, why are all these people dying?
01:19:59All your friends.
01:20:00All these professional wrestlers.
01:20:01They take them and they screw them up so much.
01:20:05And they being the rash of promoters that I've gone through in the 33 years.
01:20:11I would remember doing 90 one night stands.
01:20:15And, you know.
01:20:1790?
01:20:18Yeah.
01:20:1990 in a row.
01:20:20I don't think people understand, at least I didn't, just how much pain is involved in this.
01:20:24I broke my right foot five places, my left foot three places.
01:20:29My right hip has been titanium since December of 94.
01:20:35They just ride you until you drop.
01:20:37Yeah.
01:20:38Like, from a promoter standpoint?
01:20:41I guess they think, why not?
01:20:43So then they interview Vince, and I saw the raw footage for Vince.
01:20:48And Armand Katane says something like...
01:20:50Vince, let me read you again, not to beat this into the ground, but it's Roddy Piper saying this.
01:20:54So I think it's important for you to hear it.
01:20:57Um, when all these people are dying, when you say there is no exit except being carried out,
01:21:03and this is my question, how much of this falls on Vince McMahon's shoulders?
01:21:07Piper's answer says, right now, all of it. Right now, all of it.
01:21:11I never said that. I got all eight hours up there.
01:21:14He said, well, and they never showed that on TV.
01:21:17They showed Vince slapping the papers out of his hand.
01:21:20I think HVO caught him on a bad day and that they primed the pump.
01:21:23They didn't want to know what was your greatest...
01:21:26They may have asked you in that interview, what are some of your best moments?
01:21:29And just didn't air it.
01:21:31Okay, then Roddy, what were some of your lowest moments?
01:21:34And they used that.
01:21:36That's television these days. It's sensationalism.
01:21:39Again, it's like Roddy's point of view has been one of an anti-promoter point of view all his life.
01:21:44You know? And that's okay.
01:21:46I don't mind being who I am. I guess he didn't mind being who he is.
01:21:48If I had to do again, I would change my attitude towards promoters.
01:21:55And I would also change my modus operandi and become a friendlier businessman.
01:22:03I don't really know the exact specifics other than, you know, I think the feeling was that Roddy wasn't happy.
01:22:13And if he wasn't happy, then, you know, he should go.
01:22:19I came in Madison Square Garden that night. There was Vince.
01:22:21I had no idea that there was any heat. Vince came out and said,
01:22:24Hey, what are you doing?
01:22:25He kind of puffed up like he does, but he shakes his mind.
01:22:27How's Roddy? How are you doing?
01:22:29Went and worked the garden. Went back to the hotel in Newark.
01:22:33Nobody ever phoned me. It was just put up on the Internet
01:22:36that they couldn't come to contractual agreements with me.
01:22:42Is HBO here?
01:22:44Never mind.
01:22:47One thing I said to JR is, I want to come back there. Vince is going to have all this
01:22:53content. I like him. He's a friend. We know each other. And so it got smoothed out.
01:22:58He belongs in the Hall of Fame because, to me, in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, he was the
01:23:04greatest of all time.
01:23:05I know it meant an awful lot to him, and I know it's a moment that he'll cherish for the
01:23:10rest of his life.
01:23:11It was a very kind honor that I'm very happy that he's given to me.
01:23:19Oh, it was great. He loved it. I mean, we talked that day, and I said, Piper, I am so
01:23:24thrilled.
01:23:24He goes, one, I said, to be up here with you and Hulk Hogan. I said, you know, to have
01:23:29Nikolai and the Iron Sheik and Paul Orndorff and Bob Horton, you know, everybody that we all kind of grew
01:23:35up with.
01:23:36I said, we didn't realize it, but it was the greatest time of our life in the 80s. We were
01:23:40like one family. We were all fraternity brothers. We were all together.
01:23:43We traveled together, stayed together, ate together, and it was just such a great bond. I said, you know, it'll
01:23:49never be the same again like that. And he agreed with me. But he was great.
01:23:54I love you so much, man. I love you so much, but I guarantee you this. My name is Rowdy,
01:24:02Rowdy Piper, and you ain't seen nothing yet. WrestleMania 21. Here I come, baby. I am yours. I stole it.
01:24:14The one thing that you needed to be careful of in the Hall of Fame is the Hall of Fame
01:24:19can be a period. You don't want a Hall of Fame to be a period.
01:24:23Maybe a comma or an exclamation point. But it was very important for the last words to come out is,
01:24:31you ain't seen nothing yet. I just begun.
01:24:34Thank you for the honor of the Hall of Fame. Now, let's move on and make history.
01:24:52This is this guy that had a lot of energy that did a lot of firsts in our business, putting
01:24:56up Piper's Pit, which could have gone either way, could have failed, could have been a success.
01:25:01And obviously, it turned out to be a success because even to this day on our big show, what do
01:25:07we have? We have a Piper's Pit. And who do we have? Roddy.
01:25:10Roddy's being inducted into the Hall of Fame. And now he's going to get in the ring and do a
01:25:16Piper's Pit. You know, I mean, on the night after being in the Hall of Fame, he's going to have
01:25:21probably the single biggest star the business has ever seen as his guest.
01:25:27Welcome to Piper's Pit. It was just a powder kick, which is dynamite that could have exploded at any time.

01:26:04just get along and let's have some fun.
01:26:06Man, who would have thought that tonight, here on Monday Night Raw, we'd be witnessing another edition of Piper's Pit?
01:26:14It's been a while. Well, Piper's got the comfort of knowing that whenever he does reemerge, he'll get a reaction.
01:26:21It'll be that way until the end of time. He made that kind of mark on people in the 80s
01:26:27and the 90s that they will remember him forever.
01:26:34Always Rowdy, Roddy Piper.
01:26:36Because I was Rowdy before Rowdy was cool!
01:26:39Okay, he was a lunatic, and Roddy was crazy.
01:26:43Off the handle, Roddy Piper got a PhD on the streets, and it served him well all his life.

01:26:53Roddy was a fighter.
01:26:55Had more guts than anybody I ever knew.
01:26:57Fearless. He's fearless.
01:26:59I understand big body, little, tiny, weeny brain.

01:27:05I've never seen anybody like him, or before him, even.

01:27:11Hot Rod didn't copy anybody. He didn't have to.
01:27:14His outfit, the kilt, the bagpipes, nobody had that.
01:27:17You know why I wear a kilt? Because I'm tough enough to, man.
01:27:20I always remember the black leather jacket, the Hot Rod T-shirt.
01:27:23He said the things you remember.
01:27:24You know, you come in here all the time!
01:27:27I've got the 80 kit in the trunk!
01:27:30You know, just when you got all the answers, I changed the questions!
01:27:34You know, it's just, it's him.

01:27:37Every single interview segment on our television has been a ripoff of Piper's Pit.
01:27:53There was something to be said for being where he was in the 80s when wrestling took off.
01:27:59He was in large part responsible for the big boom in pro wrestling that WWE had in the mid 80s.
01:28:05He's kind of the James Dean of wrestling.
01:28:08If he was the antagonist in a match, the hotter the crowd, the better.
01:28:12And that equated to the magical formula of a wrestling villain.
01:28:18He made him mad.
01:28:20Hey!
01:28:22You can make you laugh.
01:28:23You can make you mad.
01:28:24You can make you cry.
01:28:25That's what it's all about.
01:28:26We are the world!
01:28:28We are the children!
01:28:29No one has ever been more aptly nicknamed than Rowdy, Rowdy Piper.
