A commemorative polo shirt for T&TEC's 80th anniversary has triggered a political backlash, with Opposition PNM chairman Marvin Gonzales accusing the electricity commission of playing politics with the nation's Independence celebrations.

But T&TEC says the shirt is part of an Employee Appreciation Day marking eight decades of service.

00:00It's a commemorative polo bearing TNTech's signature, yellow color, and it is at the center of the latest political controversy.
00:09TNTech's general manager, Ian Ramerton, told employees the commemorative polo was being distributed ahead of Employee Appreciation Day on August
00:1828th, as the commission celebrates its ATF anniversary.
00:22In his August 10th message, Ramerton encouraged staff to wear the shirts as they celebrate TNTech's history and achievements.
00:30He said, quote, it will be an opportunity for us to come together, reflect on our shared accomplishments, and reaffirm
00:37our collective commitment to building an even stronger future, end quote.
00:42But opposition PNM chairman Marvin Gonzalez claims employees are being instructed to wear yellow and says that is a problem.
00:50Gonzalez says TNTech workers traditionally wear the national colors around independence.
00:56He wrote to Facebook saying, quote, the politically affiliated and appointed management of TNTech should stop this nonsense.
01:03The employees are not stupid. Allow the employees of the commission to proudly wear their national colors, end quote.
01:10Gonzalez is accusing the UNC government of using national holidays for political purposes.
01:16He says the instruction to wear yellow should be abandoned.
01:18He says, quote, the UNC continues to play political games with our national holidays and it's time to stop this
01:25nonsense, end quote.
01:27But TNTech's written message makes no reference to political colors or Independence Day.
01:32Instead, the general manager frames the initiative as an internal anniversary celebration, thanking employees for their contribution to the commission
01:41over eight decades.
01:42Ramerton wrote, quote, your efforts remain the foundation of our success and the driving force behind our continued growth.
01:50Together, we will continue building our proud legacy of excellence, end quote.
01:55TNTech's Employee Appreciation Day is scheduled for Friday, August 28th, with employees encouraged to wear the commemorative polo as the
