00:09Here's what's happening.
00:09In December, Trump sued the BBC for $10 billion.
00:13$5 billion for defamation
00:15and $5 billion for deceptive trade practices.
00:17He claimed a BBC documentary
00:19that aired days before the 2024 election
00:22edited his January 6th speech
00:23to make it look like he encouraged the Capitol attack.
00:26The quotes were delivered almost an hour apart
00:28and they cut a section where he told supporters
00:30to demonstrate peacefully.
00:32The BBC then apologized for the edit
00:34but denies it was defamation.
00:36Trump complained that the edit hurt his brand,
00:38his properties, and his businesses.
00:40So in July, a judge ruled the BBC
00:42could see the trust's financial records
00:44to determine if there were any damages.
00:47Then right before the deadline,
00:48his lawyers filed an emergency motion
00:50and asked to amend the complaint
00:52so it only claims reputational injury to the president.
00:55They said once the BBC saw the records,
00:57the damage couldn't be undone.
00:59Then on August 6th, a Florida judge,
01:01one whom Trump appointed in 2019,
01:03paused the first judge's order
01:05until the court decides whether the amendment is allowed.
01:08So now two things are left unresolved,
01:10whether Trump can drop the business claim
01:12and whether the case survives at all.
01:14The BBC is moving to dismiss,
01:16arguing the program wasn't even broadcast in Florida.
01:19If it survives, trial is set for February 15th, 2027.
