00:00Trees spend all summer hiding their brightest colors.
00:03Here's why they finally let go.
00:05Chlorophyll, the stuff that makes leaves green, soaks up sunlight and turns it into food for the tree.
00:11Then fall shows up. Shorter days, cooler nights, and all that chlorophyll starts to break down.
00:16As the green fades, the colors hiding underneath finally show through.
00:20The yellows, the oranges, and the reds.
00:23And the species sets the shade.
00:24Golden aspens, orange-red sugar maples, scarlet red maples, and russet oaks.
00:30The best color recipe? Warm, sunny days and cool nights.
00:34The longer the leaves hang on, the healthier the tree heading into spring.
00:38So when the leaves finally do drop, that tree is stocked up for winter with a head start on spring.
