00:00Red leaves, green leaves, and totally bare branches, but it's all one tree.
00:04So how does that work?
00:05Well, the leaves are at different stages of getting ready for winter,
00:08and the weather helps shape what exactly you're seeing.
00:11First shorter days signal leaves to stop making chlorophyll.
00:13That's the pigment that makes them green.
00:15As that breaks down, other colors start to become visible,
00:18but each leaf doesn't lose its green at exactly the same time.
00:21It's sunlight, actually, that leads to those red pigments.
00:24So sunny days and cool nights bring out brighter reds,
00:27but leaves tucked in the shade look a lot different than those getting direct sunlight.
00:31Eventually, leaves get ready to fall, and stronger wind speeds up that process.
00:34So all of that together leaves you with this.
00:37Some leaves still green, others showing off their fall color, and some already on the ground.
