00:03At the center of the Milky Way, our galaxy, there's a supermassive black hole named Sagittarius A.
00:09Just a few years ago, astronomers captured the first photo of it, and it looks like this.
00:13But now researchers have taken another look, this time taking a snapshot of the black hole's magnetic field lines,
00:20and the results could change the way we consider black holes.
00:23The team of scientists measured how polarization might affect the direct image shadow of Sagittarius A,
00:28revealing strong, twisted, and organized magnetic fields, winding all around the Milky Way's central black hole.
00:35And it has a near-identical magnetic field structure to the only other directly-imaged black hole ever, Messier 87.
00:41The thing is, M87 is a much different black hole at first glance.
00:45Sarah Isound, an astrophysicist at the Harvard and Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said about the discovery,
00:51quote, along with Sagittarius A having a strikingly similar polarization structure to that scene in the much larger and more
00:58powerful M87 black hole,
01:00we've learned that strong and ordered magnetic fields are critical to how black holes interact with gas and matter around
01:06them.
