00:00drop into those deep positions just to go through their formation for our viewers van der saar in
00:05goal the back four reisinger stam deburre and van bronckles the midfield seydorf david's
00:10cocku and zenden and up the front bergkamp klivert the czech republic their back four will be latar
00:15repka rada and gabriel paborski will play midfield with nedved nemetz and rosicki and there's collar
00:21number 10 who will be up front with smitzer collar with a good scoring record internationals
00:27and frank deburre will have to be aware of him the dutch captain
00:31and the official on the touchline is about to give senor kalina the signal to go the crowd can't wait
00:37for this to start it's packed in here and uh we'll see now if holland can justify their reputation as
00:45tournament favorites playing at home in this amsterdam arena and the ball comes straight away
00:52to smitzer for the czech republic number 17 both teams trained here on the pitch last night it's a
01:01pitch which has been relayed 17 times in three years here's collar being tracked back by stam
01:09relayed because of trouble with the turf and zenden just knocks the ball back there to van der saar
01:17zenden playing as i said wide left where overmars would have played with van bronckhorst behind him
01:24this is ryziger one of the barcelona players
01:31i hope the noise is getting through to you at home because it's going to be like this throughout the
01:35match ryziger looking for seydorf who plays wide on the right in this dutch formation with inter milan now koku
01:47shivani van bronckhorst and pavel cernicek there has regained his position as the number one in the
01:54czech team having been one of the backup goalkeepers in england four years ago
02:03smitzer wide on the left
02:09any early impressions no i think i mean smitzer is definitely going to play wide on the left almost
02:14sort of getting five in into that midfield area collar a tall striker up by himself and ned redden
02:20and young rosicki is probably going to join this is seydorf he got picked out by a brilliant ball from
02:26frank deborre what a great pastor he is from the back a bit like lauren blanc really well frank
02:31the bird's not had the best of season i've got to save a barcelona i've seen once or twice in
02:35the champions league managed then to dwell on it and enable the defender to get back covering
02:39dennis bergkamp will take the corner
02:44bit of movement in the box clivek goes near post deborre's there
02:50and the header back in clivek for holland oh good block and it's come back to bergkamp good save
02:56cernicek oh it's a double blow but neither of them counted a couple of decent efforts clivek just
03:05spinning but this is the second one bergkamp on his right foot favored one david
03:16zenden
03:20clivek good turn by the number nine patrick clivek for holland cernicek gets a hand
03:25zenden goes in cernicek somehow got down again it's a corner
03:30there's an excellent move that zender knocked it into clivek zenden is clear on his left i thought he'd
03:36release it to him it's going wide wasn't it and actually cernicek did well stumbled and got up for the
03:42second one because it wasn't going out of play this was the initial shot didn't hit it that well
03:46bubbling along it's going wide cernicek gets up it's not going to go out zender just sees a little
03:52chance perhaps to clip it in near post definitely going to be hard-earned chances these for holland
03:58when they come their way they've got to try and tuck them away because the longer they go on the
04:02more
04:02frustration will come from the home crowd well here's a man on whom that responsibility rests it's uh
04:07david's inside to bird camp clive at his square if he can find him bird camp
04:16huge roar went around the stadium because people in certain positions must have thought that might
04:21be going in they turned gabriel well didn't he on his left foot he doesn't often get on his left
04:26foot didn't get attached to the center just dragged it across the file post dennis bird camp the highest
04:32scorer in the history of dutch football managed to get free kick in the corner and out of trouble
04:38one extra minute will be played in the first half this is collar for the czech republic
04:42nedved has got proborski outside him and nedved hits a tremendous shot
04:50the lazio man really let that one fly and hit the back of the goal net as it on the
04:56outside as you'll see
04:59moved a lot in the air didn't it and the sale was worried enough to dive full length to the
05:04left
05:05that were quite on target but uh just that little threat there you also have show of nets we saw
05:10there
05:10goodness me what a bonus it would have been if he if the czechs had scored just before half time
05:16in
05:16fact we're in the stoppage period at the moment of one minute and they've got more ambitious as the
05:21half has gone on here's smitsa rosicki smitsa again attacking the end where their supporters are the checks
05:38but that's half time in the amsterdam arena well not so easy for the dutch no you just sense of
05:47frustration of the home fans haven't had enough for me down the right hand side rising girl
05:52sadov haven't really produced much at all down the left certainly zender looked lively on one of two
05:57occasions and certainly david's and then when van bronckhurst comes forward that that little trio
06:03i think put lateral under pressure but generally speaking the chances have been few and far between
06:08just to say trevor while you were speaking they've had to pull patrick klybert away from the referee
06:13there was a little confrontation there between him and colina i don't think anything's been done
06:18about it at this stage but it wasn't an easy situation the other dutch players had to step in
06:23half time here gary holland nil the czech republic nil spontaneous team talk as they wait to start
06:30the uh second period the czechs have now got all their players on the pitch and away we go
06:35as yet no substitutions and uh we'll see how the second half develops stamm from the back for holland
06:45rising
07:03and here comes coco
07:09and it's zenden and now van bronckhorst and cernicek goes down
07:22that's on by collar here's nedvied and he's got three checks to his right here taking on ryziger
07:30nedvied's cross oh proboski no what a chance
07:38van der saar would have done nothing about that
07:41it's nedvied with a really telling ball cuts out defense and goalkeeper and proboski got contact
07:48an interval maybe we'll see something special from one of the dutch players here bergkamp and stamm
07:53are next to the ball we think it's got to be familiar position where bergkamp would hit
07:59although he's not got any runner well seydorf is square of them as well
08:03in fact it's yet stamm to strike it and cernicek turns it away it comes back to seydorf
08:08clivert's in there and the oh well their arms are up appearing for handball and all sorts nothing
08:16given oh yeah sam never gets a look in you see with david beckham and used his authority went for
08:22power
08:22just rolled to the side uh cernicek right behind it hit it hard enough but as i say straight at
08:28him
08:39and here he is again collar nedvied goes forward they've got collars in on the near post oh and van
08:46der saar makes an important save from the giant center forward jan coller
08:54still the checks have it what a good spell it is for them latar to proboski
09:03well van der saar also plays for juventus and he too has a towering reputation
09:07it was a good save collar must have thought he'd steer that in
09:14but the checks are dictating it at the moment spitzer
09:18nemex now it's the dutch to turn to retreat collar
09:27well what about that oh it was unlucky i mean two bits of good skill look outside of the right
09:32foot on
09:33the floor they've had good run good reverse ball just gets in front of his man and van der saar
09:38does
09:39well and then wrysiger completes the clearance i think a few people at the left-hand end were shouting
09:45goal then and they might now it's nedved real chance but he didn't pull it back to the waiting
09:51rosinski went for goal himself on a narrow angle i don't think he's going to beat van der saar inside
09:57the
09:57near post good plan nedved just clip the ground a bit some defending to do for him because uh the
10:08checks have a throw quite close to the corner flag smitzer nedved in the middle with collar
10:16and that's nedved's header oh he's hit the post and come down on the line
10:20collar looks at the assistant and claims it was over nedved can't believe it
10:26what a slice of luck for holland watch this trevor well they're so unlucky they get to bad david
10:33spring superbly van der saar doesn't move he thinks he's beaten look and it comes along the line
10:38it might well as funny
10:47cernicek gets fists to the ball
10:52cuckoo is still in there it's bergkamp's cross cuckoo is coming into burst coming in
11:00well that's the twin brother who's just come on and uh making a connection there on the cross from
11:07bergkamp good cross he says he just tugged back here comes in clears everyone at the back press there was
11:13a
11:13little tug
11:17nedved appears to be hurt he's over on this touch line playing no part at the moment
11:21train has gone down to have a look it's a free kick to the 10-man czech republic at the
11:25moment taken by
11:26paborski collar is there oh they've hit the bar this time could you credit this the second time they've hit
11:35the
11:35frame of van der saar's goal paborski's free kick and what a deft glancing header this is
11:42off the shoulder perhaps in the end but it certainly hit the bar rise again deborah
11:51that's ronald debor
11:55it's his throw to cuckoo to david's edgar david
12:04just leaning back wasn't he
12:06doesn't have his shooting boots there nedved i thought he was wrapped up for the night but he's all
12:10he's broken out of that stretcher he's just holding his elbow but it looks like he's very keen to come
12:15back on that's why they didn't bring on the sub he's too valuable to them they put a strapping on
12:20uh on the right arm the camp will go across to take it is this the moment for the dutch
12:28forward comes frank debor and also bert konterman and it's been played quickly
12:36cocko is there konterman's there virtually his first touch since coming on for stan
12:44just looking a bit weary there czech republic
12:47certainly just clears everyone and konterman comes in late
12:52reacts almost wasn't expecting it to clear coffee widow
12:57frank
13:00david
13:02badel's chasing him over mars
13:06klybert and uh bird camp awaiting private's come to the near post oh and they're appealing
13:11great penalty and i think they've got it there was a push in the opinion of the referee and the
13:18checks are down on their knees in disbelief
13:22a penalty kick has been given to holland
13:28possibly deborre who is coming in beyond climate here oh it's a pull of the shirt is it by yuri
13:35nemec
13:36on ronald deborre and here we have in the 89th minute a penalty to holland what a climax and they're
13:46still protesting the checks and you've got to feel sorry for them here trevor cernicek is looking at the
13:52referee in absolute desperation it wasn't a blatant one with a little tug but they got over miles one
13:58against one against one and it was his telling cross it's going to be deborre this is frank deborre the
14:06twin brother of the man who was fouled and he scores
14:24the place has gone wild
14:28but amidst it all the checks are furious
14:33certainly check went the wrong way
14:37and holland take the lead in what turned out to be the 90th minute
14:46frank deborre scores the goal that gets frank reichard right off the hook but what
14:55well what can you say you've got to feel sorry for the checks there was a cruel twist in the
15:00tower
15:00wasn't it he's done very well stopping the ball getting out to overmars really there was no cover
15:07there he had one against one before borski good cross coming in at the far post but wait there's a
15:13chance of an equalizer here in injury time it's oh it's offside collar it's offside
15:22lockments has come on for the czech republic as a desperate last throw
15:28and it is on for nedved who's finally gone off and he must be absolutely sick with what's happened here
15:39i'm not in the middle of all this i want you to talk about the decision
15:41it's over but the dutch are on the attack again
15:47i thought there was a tug on the shirt but he seemed to make a lot of it to me
15:51i'm not sure it got on the end of it he got in early ronaldy bird it looked
15:55as if he was going to clear him it was the little tug on the sleeve
15:59certainly did very well referee kalina to actually see it because it would have been blind side of him
16:04uh but he was what just 10 yards away signaled to the spot straight away
16:08yeah i think the one to watch was nemet he actually turned away for longly he didn't sort of dispute
16:14the
16:14actual decision and i think deep down he knows there was a little bit of a tug there but uh
16:18sometimes he gets them spotted and sometimes not but it's very very cruel for the czech republic side
16:24they did not deserve it
16:27we're in the first minute of stoppage time there are going to be four minutes here
16:31this is patrick clive up with the back heel and now it's over mars
16:36and the dutch have made the breakthrough in the nick of time
16:40lock vents is now on up front with collar two gigantic forwards there now babel backing up
16:49oh that's a bad tackle that's uh van bronkos yellow card on rosicki
16:57and there's a bit of trouble down on the touch line the referees come tearing across chauvin next the
17:02czech coach and somebody has done said or done something down there that's caused all sorts
17:07one of the coaching staff i think is going to be booked as well or even sent to the stand
17:12a red card it may be one of the substitutes but kalina is sending one of the czech brigade down
17:20there
17:23away from the bench with a red card and if it is one of the serbs he won't play in
17:27the next game
17:29the red card was clearly shown that's maya the reserve goalkeeper nearest to us
17:34and they're still debating it the fourth official is still trying to persuade someone to leave is it
17:39is it lateral who went off earlier looks like he was holding his boots as if he'd been playing i
17:44think it was let's out hang on a minute it's a free kick to the czech republic the penalty area
17:48is packed
17:51what a finish to this game it's going to be paborski to knock it in and the big men are
17:56up there this
17:57time it's come out to rada and they've got a corner they've got a corner collo is having a long
18:04conversation with the referee but you'll want to get on the end of this lock vents has come on wearing
18:14right on the line in fact
18:18oh and rada going in collar going in and it's still in play here
18:27and van der saar challenged by lock vents living dangerously i think you can say it's another corner
18:37it's a storming end to this first match in the amsterdam arena of euro 2000
18:42the czechs haven't given it up it's going to be paborski lock vents and collar weights rada weights
18:52and the header goes over the bar
18:56but what's he given now another corner on the other side said he'd come off somebody else i didn't see
19:01that myself well it's another corner
19:06rep cars in there and in goes lock vents and the goalkeeper didn't make it and overmars to clear for
19:13holland i've lost all track of this stop each time now i'm told under 30 seconds but the checks are
19:26still oppressing the referee oh there's a flag up and it was late it was very late it's an offside
19:34well technically they had a man sent off trainer but he wasn't on the pitch
19:38they're desperately unlucky aren't they i mean you think of that paborski chance and then also the
19:44two of the gates the woodwork i mean you know they deserve something from this i think the sending
19:48off was lateral and he had played in the game so the suspension will apply he was sent off indeed
19:55in
19:55the quarter-final of 96 and missed the semi in the final with uh suspension he's technically been given
20:01a red card again tonight although he'd already been substituted this is babel
20:08well how much longer is here luigi colina going to look at cernicek's come right out of goal
20:14to pump this forward this is the last throw really
20:20collars there here comes babel oh he's put it wide
20:27what a climax that would have been it's collar here look at him winning it in well nobody challenged him
20:33and babel oh if he could have just wrapped his foot around that forever i think it would have gone
20:37to meet it he sort of waited for it when it bounced baby i mean it was great header for
20:42collar just cushioned it down into his stride i mean they just waited not to get a goal aren't they
20:47i
20:47mean they've just outplayed him in the second half i can't believe how much they've dominated and run
20:52the dutch record and somehow rather the home side are going to get a one nil victory and they've got
20:57it
20:57what a cool game football can be but the fact of the matter is that holland have won their opening
21:03match in group d with a penalty kick in the 90th minute by frank deborre after his twin brother had
21:11his jerk pulled in the area but retcar shows what a rousing relentless rugged performance this was
21:19by the czech republic and so deserving of more than what they've got the dutch have got the three
21:25points they're off to a winning start with a substandard performance it must be said but your heart goes out
21:31to the czech republic because they really produced a display there that was beyond all expectations the
21:38final score in the amsterdam arena as this crowd gather their thoughts and nemec is still arguing look
21:46with the referee that's how they feel about what happened here the final score is holland won
21:53the czech republic an angry czech republic nil
